As much as I want to love and support this local place, the owner is completely oblivious and has no self-awareness. I honestly have no idea how they've stayed open so long. Possibly for some on a budget to dine out because they are inexpensive compared to other breakfast places around, but the quality matches the price. The service is basically nonexistent. We walked in on a Monday morning around 11:30 and there were three tables occupied. The owner was the only one working, I'm guessing because of how he treats his staff after reading other negative reviews that all sound strikingly familiar. My friend got one egg over medium, bacon, potatoes, and a biscuit and gravy. It looked disgusting. The egg was overcooked, but she seemed to be happy with it otherwise, so I won't make any other comments on her food. I on the other hand had already had breakfast earlier in the day so I decided to take a chance on a salad. Terrible idea. I ordered the grilled chicken salad, which is supposed to come with lettuce, tomato onion, cheese, green bell peppers, and dressing. I asked for honey mustard on the side. My salad did not come out until 10 minutes after my friend's hot meal came out. When it did, it only contained lettuce, tomato, cheese, and he gave me Italian dressing on the side. I immediately tried to stop him and ask him for honey mustard instead, but he dropped it and bounced without asking if we needed anything else. He proceeded to go up to the front counter, check out all three tables consecutively, make conversation with each as they were paying, completely ignoring my friend who was waving her hand and yelling to him. He kept saying oh I'll be right over! After a good 10 minutes, he came back over and handed me a ramekin of 1000 Island and told me, "Here try this one, I think it's honey mustard." Like seriously? Where the heck did that even come from? He didn't go to the kitchen on his way to the table! I took one look and could clearly tell it was 1000 island. I asked him if I could please just have honey mustard as I had originally asked for, and a side of tomatoes and green peppers with my lettuce, chicken, and cheese. This man tried to take my plate back to the kitchen to add those things instead of just bringing me a side dish. Make it make sense. At this point there are fruit flies buzzing all around our table because we're the only table now. My sad salad has been sitting there for 10 minutes and now you want to take my plate back? Anyway, my friend likes the place so I shut up and ate my unappetizing salad. This place is such a disappointment. I hadn't been in a while so, I had high hopes that it might have improved since I was last there. Honestly, I'm pretty sure it's declined. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

I got breakfast for lunch and I order scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and wheat toast with breakfast potatoes. The quantity of the eggs was a little under normal and they were cooked a little too long. The bacon slices were big but nowhere crispy. The breakfast potatoes were a big clump which caused uneven browning. Perfect wheat toast and orange juice. Jonathan was my server and he was awesome. awww man! disappointment. we go to AD somewhat on a regular basis. this last visit is worth a mention. sunday, 11:15am my wife ordered the blt, i ordered the chopped steak no onions, side of salad and corn/green beans. the waitstaff we're doinga good job of keeping up with the tables but the food we got was totally sub-par. i barely ate the salad because quite a bit of the lettuce was brown and had otherwise unappetizing pieces in it. the gravy on the chopped steak also was unappetizing. it was coagulated, very dark, and had a slight burned taste to it. the corn/beans was good. the blt was more of a t without much of the b or l. we don't normally hit totally sub-par food all at once like this but this visit was worth a mention. will we go back? of course read more

We omelette was way over a cup and ridiculously bitter and nasty. The potatoes were stale and nasty. Even the OJ tasted nasty. It was also fun, listening to the waitress, talk about her personal woes to another table and also about being hungover. I haven't eaten here in months and this was just a bad experience. Had a huge omelette for breakfast- the Philly with steak, cheese, peppers and large eggs, served with a mound of their fabulous home style potatoes (recently featured in the Post-Dispatch's food section), which came without salt so you can flavor to taste!! Perfection to start my day!! My friend's short stack of pancakes were light, fluffy, and had a ton of the added chocolate chips! My second friend had the farm-fresh large eggs with smokey bacon and a tasty (if smallish) biscuit. Had a great Mediterranean omelette! There was an issue with my order and the man waiting tables and bringing food out immediately remade my food and it was even better than the first one they made! We aren't usually in this area but decided to give it a try for breakfast. I ordered biscuit and gravy combo with scrambled eggs, house potatoes, and three strips of bacon. My eggs came covered in gravy, my potatoes tasted burned, the 3 bacon strips were just pieces thrown on top if the potatoes. Nothing tasted good, and the burned taste of the potatoes overwhelmed everything else. Pictured is my husband's omelet (????). It was just supposed to have ham and cheese, but there were green peppers throughout. The cheese was hard and crusty instead of melted, and it was also overcooked and tasted burned. We asked the server if this was supposed to be how it looks and she said she was new and didn't know, so she brought over a veteran server. The veteran server agreed it looked gross and said she would take it back. Funny thing is, she was the one who delivered it to the table. They were apologetic and discounted his replacement scrambled eggs, but we won't be back if we are in that area again. read more

Unfortunately, I was completely unimpressed with this diner. The service was pretty good but the food was tolerable, at best with some subpar coffee. I ordered their farm fresh eggs selection: 1 egg over-easy, house potatoes, corned beef hash and choice of toast. My potatoes were borderline burnt and lacking in flavor, the egg was OK and the toast never came. The saving grace was the corned beef hash. That was actually good and I ate every single last bite of it. My dining partner had the biscuits and gravy with ham amd potatoes and his biscuits were burnt. They tried to cover it up by dumping a lot of gravy on top. Needless to say, the order did take a while and they couldn't even get us all the items we've ordered nor deliver something of better quality than what we were served. This is such a friendly place with great staff. I had a jalapeno burger with fries and hubby had the BLT with a peach cup. The cook came by to check on us and we had a nice conversation with him about great BLT's and burgers. The portion sizes were great and I loved the crispy fries and the fact that they appeared to be cut from real potatoes and not dumped frozen out of a bag. My burger was very good - flavorful, cooked perfect and lots of jalapenos! Hubby said his BLT was really good! This is a wonderful diner and if you are ever in the area, check them out! read more

I love breakfast and Affton Diner does it right! The location itself was a little tricky to find and it is located in a strip mall, but I am so glad we found it. We arrived a little after 11 on a Sunday and were able to find a table for two. As soon as we sat down we were brought over coffee and water (we didn't even have to ask)! The restaurant is definitely cozy and there are probably 11-12 tables total which means the place will fill up quickly, but we lucked out by finding a table when we did. Our server came over and took our orders. I ordered blueberry pancakes and a side of biscuits (I always try biscuits when I go out to eat). The bf ordered some kind of egg dish. As we were waiting food was coming out of the kitchen and everything looked delicious and smelled great! There were 3 servers working the floor that day and each of them made sure we were taken care of my refillin gout coffee and water when needed. They were all friendly and I could tell they enjoyed their jobs because they got to chat with customers! By the time our food came out I was starving, there was a little bit of a wait...but that's okay because the kitchen is small and there is really only 1 grill I think so it is going to take time to cook each order. My pancakes looked great and the biscuits were grilled and pressed with butter-so good! Throughout our meal we noticed that the other diners were just as pleased as we were. By the end of the rush the kitchen was able to slow down and the owner came out to check on tables and make sure we were all doing okay. The owner was also the guy on the grill so he was woring his butt off for us! I was impressed that he found the time to mingle wiht customers! Stopped here on my way out of town because my usual place in Soulard didn't open until 8am. What a happy accident! This place is what you think of when you think of the quintessential diner. Simple food, prepared exceptionally well, with excellent service! I went as simply as it gets with a two egg breakfast. It includes toast, your choice of meat (I chose bacon and they over served it - probably 4.5 slices on a promise of 3), and skillet potatoes to which they added onions. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the potatoes were nothing short of awesome. My coffee cup was never empty and the amount of attention paid was just right. I'll be back! read more

Went in for breakfast about 10:30 on a Wednesday. Not many people at the time, so after placing my order the food came up pretty quickly. Big portions!! I got the double up....... which was 2 eggs, 2 French toast, fried taters, and bacon. Also got a half order of biscuits n gravy. The taters were crispy but soft, As the bacon was also. My eggs were perfect over medium, runny yellows but cooked whites. Biscuit and gravy had a large biscuit with lots of sausage gravy. Let's not forget the French toast ..... I will never understand Affton Diner. I want to start off by stating the food is always good. What is not acceptable is the lack of organization and customer service from the Owner and staff. I called in this morning around 8:00 A.M. for the monthly to go order I do to support a local restaurant. The owner answers "Affton Diner what can I get you, we are very busy" I laughed and said "I would like to order some food from your restaurant" and he says "are you going to order food or not". Eventually, I ordered Eggs Benedict and my wife chose the Farmers boy breakfast. The owner states my food should be ready in a bit and quickly gets off the phone. No time expectation. I show up 15 minutes later just going off a good guesstimate and to my lack of surprise the food is sitting on the table by the door. The staff had the same deer in the headlights look of a restaurant at full capacity but there was a total of 5 tables. I waited around for a few minutes for the owner to come bag my food up and not acknowledge me. He leaves again to go drop food off at other customers tables. My food is sitting in a bag, other staff members standing around, and after a few more minutes the owner comes over and says to sign. I understand businesses are struggling but this is probably my 10th-12th time I have ordered carry out from this restaurant and I find the owner to be unpleasant. They're right next door to an identical restaurant and I feel that he should treat his customer base a bit better. read more

Whenever I visit Missouri we get breakfast here on my last day and I am always satisfied. We kinda pigged out got French toast, breakfast bagel sandwich and biscuit gravy and it was good. Usually I hate getting biscuits and gravy at restaurants because it's gross but I thought this was one was good. Waffle House is cleaner and has less bland food. Everything looked and tasted like it had been cooked in grease, including my plate, which was covered in it. The biscuits under the tasteless gravy were hard as a rock, and I had to use a knife and massive amounts of leverage to cut them. The potatoes had a "shell" on the top (from being cooked in grease). Same with the eggs. The $3 coffee was completely burnt. The only item that had any taste was the bacon...once you patted off the grease it was swimming it. I wouldn't have minded the extraordinary wait to get my food, if the food was good, but this was a complete strikeout. My wife couldn't even eat her french toast. She said it tasted too eggy. Bottom Line: Expanded Booth Seating, Abysmal Biscuits and Gravy, Friendly Wait Staff Visit: 03.24.19 - Sunday Morning @ 10:45AM; Dine-In - Booth w/ Party of Four Order: 1x Biscuits and Gravy 1x Two Sausage Patties 1x Large Milk Restaurant Experience: Building and Parking: The diner occupies a couple spaces of a small strip mall. Getting in and out of the lot of this restaurant does not provide many choices as the storefront sits on busy Gravois road. The diner sits very close to a major intersection, so the exits of the parking lot are blocked by roadway medians. Parking is in the front of the building. We did not have too much trouble finding a parking spot close to the diner. Inside Diner: Seating is a mix between tables and booths. The entire dining space is open, but did not seem too loud such that you could not have a conversation at your table. It appears that the diner has undergone a change in ownership and has expanded it's dining room since my last visit. Waiter: The waiter we had was named 'Kris'. After I told him I spelled my name with a 'K', he said, "So do I!" He was actually the highlight of our visit. Very attentive and kind. Food: I was sadly disappointed with my order. My plate appeared to be simply a plate of gravy. Here and there you could discern some other shapes sticking out of the gravy, but otherwise, it was all gravy. As I dug in to the gravy, I noticed what appeared to be biscuits that were quartered. What? Yes. I did not come across one biscuit that was whole on my plate. It was odd. I could only guess that the diner keeps biscuits around that were made the day before or older. Not good. Other Folks' Orders: There were three other people at the table. The two ladies at the table seemed to be either satisfied or happy with their order. The other gentleman at my table ordered almost identical to me. He was just as disappointed. Pricing: Unfortunately, I do not have an itemized list of prices for what I ordered. However, I don't recall the pricing to be out of line. Summary: Some time has passed since my visit to Affton Diner. I recall my previous visit to be enjoyable. Unfortunately, that was not the case on this visit. If it had not been for the food, I would have rated this place three to four stars. Unfortunately, my order was very disappointing. So much so, that I still feel scarred by the meal almost thirty days later. Would I come back? Not unless I heard from other customers that their "Biscuits and Gravy Game" has improved. read more
