It's a great place to drink for cheap and shoot some pool. The service can be hit or miss but I'd say pretty good about 70% of the time. Unfortunately after a couple bad experiences, I will say clientele can a little sketchy though and would be a drawback for sure... not somewhere I'd go looking to mingle. read more

I started going to Courts back in the old late 1900's while I was a waitress at the Chevy's that used to be across the street from the Saratoga Bowling Lanes. You know, back when we used to walk to school, uphill, both ways, in the snow... A lot has changed in the area, but at least Courts is still here! We would go in our uniforms, with black bean, and pinto bean, stains on our oatmeal colored Chevy's shirts, and we never felt out of place. At that time they didn't have that extra space where all the dartboards are. It was small and divey, and we loved it. And 24 years later I still love to go to Courts on occasion. Is it kind of divey? Yep! But, not as much as it used to be. Is there the occasional odd character or two (or three or four) there? Yep! The occasional rowdy, drunk idiot? Yep! The drunk who you can count on being there almost every time you go? Yep! That's all part of the charm of this place. It's a mixed crowd of people where you don't have to worry about how well styled your purposely messy hair looks, how hip your outfit is, etc. Heck, I wore my slippers there one New Years, and not one person batted an eye. Hey! But, you also get other walks of life there too so, the crowd varies. And it's usually pretty fun no matter what type of person is there. I usually go when Meghan and/or Josh are working. They are both great, and make going in for a drink fun. I have also gone there solo to grab a drink after work, and I have never felt unsafe there. There is one of two people who appear to be living in the parking lot, but they are friendly. I have seen fights there, but I have seen fights at plenty of other bars too. So, I think that's just something you deal with on occasion when you go to a bar. If you aren't too bougie, you like an affordable, stiff drink, and bartenders that make you feel welcome, and make you laugh then definitely check this bar out. read more

This is the nastiest skeeziest "dive bar" I have ever been to. First impression the building is a dump, parking is a nightmare, and there is a junk swap meet next door. There was also the charming homeless man living in his car in the parking lot smoking marijuana with his pants undone. Because of Covid and and "remodeling" the building tents and tables are set up outside. There was about 25 people there, none of whom were masked or socially distant. I paid $5 for a bottle of Heineken and sat at a table with my friend. A drunk and belligerent man -Robert the bar manager- proceeded to yell at my friend to "get the f**k outta my seat!" I've never seen such disgusting and unprofessional behavior in my life. I gave him some serious stink eye and poured my beer on his seat and left. I don't think I'll be coming back to this particular skeezy bar. read more

I came here while visiting my parents over the holidays. It is a nice bar that borders Cambrian, San Jose and Campbell. There is a DJ on weekends and the prices for drinks are perfect. The shots are incredibly poured generously. I met some good people here and there is lots of activities to do besides drink like pool and lotto machines. Overall, I will come here every year when visiting my parents. There is a variety of cocktails and beers on tap to please anyone. read more

Won't ever be coming here again. Blonde Bartender is EXTREMELY rude. I asked if she can heat up my drink and she got mad that I didn't tip her for it.. This place is OK, but they have very not honest waiter or waitress or whoever later close their credit card total by entering all tips. They added a 1 in front to make the tips from $8.50 to $18.50 and made my statement at $50. They might taking the chance as people usually don't check their receipts with the statement but I do remember how much I spent at this bar, and I keep all my receipts. The worse about this place is when I called the few times, the person who picked up the calls hang up on me while I tried to tell her that they over charged me. I am writing this review in hopes that the management will read it. I have been coming to this bar for the last 8 months with my boyfriend. We usually come to play pool with the regular patrons, but most recently they re-started karaoke on Saturdays. The karaoke scene is pretty competitive, as there are a number of places in San Jose that do Saturday night karaoke. But, we liked coming here because there wasn't a huge wait and most of the time no singers would sign up. This past weekend, I went into Courts about 12:38 am, driving from South San Jose. I made a decision to come here because I knew there would not be a long rotation to sing and I just wanted to get out of the house. When I arrived, the karaoke girl greeted me with a hug, and another patron said there weren't very many singers. She had a pad of paper, which was unusual, because the weekend prior she was writing song requests on her arms. I put my name down for 2 songs, just in case she had other people come in and sign up. And there were "3" names above my name. (I was sober and don't usually drink if I am singing) After 3 singers had sung, another girl sang, and then another girl. So, the 3 singers that were on the list above my name, plus 2 more, which means 5 people. I looked over at the Karaoke VJ, who's name I don't know, I just know she's kinda all over the place. She says "I'm sorry sweetie" I mouthed to her that I had driven very far to come there and I could have gone to the 49er. And she puts the mic up to her mouth and announces "then you should have gone there". The guy next to me says "the niner only takes cash". I explained to him that I don't drink when I sing and that this is not the FIRST time this same karaoke hostess has dismissed me singing. She saw us having a conversation and comes over to me. She says that she is sorry but a lot of people came up to sing. I said to her "you have a list of names, I was number 4 on the list, so how are these other people singing before me?" She continues to say that she was just given a lot of people and she didn't know what to do. I told her "what is the purpose of having a list if you aren't going to use it?" She said, "they were before you." I told her, "I am sober, I haven't had one drink and maybe you aren't paying attention cause you are doing other things, but it's about integrity." She didn't like hearing that very much, which really was amusing, because I was just telling her like it is. She then says "well, if you have a problem you should tell me." I said "I will let the management know." Then she says, "you should come and talk to me instead of spreading it all around the bar. I saw you talking to people." I spoke to the man sitting next to me who continued to call her a "liar" in Spanish. I didn't speak to the bartenders or any other patrons. I'm pretty annoyed with this because this is not the first time she's behaved unprofessionally. I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed out that she is super intoxicated when she does the karaoke hosting, she usually is running back to her station when songs end because she is doing "other things". If they need someone to host this bar, I'd be willing to do it for free if they want someone who takes this seriously. Just because this is a dive bar, doesn't mean they have to have a bad reputation for bad customer service. The bartenders are great to me. (Thus the 3 stars) Megan, Josh... I love them! But this Saturday karaoke thing is going to keep me away because of the lack of respect I am getting from this Karaoke VJ. It's pretty unfortunate because I used to enjoy coming to this place for karaoke. I guess I will need to find another Saturday spot. read more

Pool tables, dart boards, arcade games, juke box, loud music, loud people all having a good time. I'm in. This place is as divey as divey gets which fits the fun-time criteria when you're with awesome friends sharing beer, shots and giggles. The bar staff is friendly and around to carry conversation with like a good bartender should. Guess that's why I like dives and smaller bars better - there's a more personable feel to it when they're actually interested in conversing with you rather than just pouring a drink or cracking a bottle open and passing it over like an assembly line worker would. It's this kind of interaction that makes a spot worthwhile. Moderate selection of beers on tap along with bottled. Liquor of course is a-plenty. read more

I've lived by this place for years and driven by it without EVER thinking, "Hey, maybe I should check it out sometime." It happened. Driving back from SF, a few friends called to say they were there for karaoke night (Sat night). I had visions of this place being dingy and what not, but FAR FROM IT. Long bar with pool tables and dart board in back. The best part. It felt relaxed and there wasn't one 'type' of person there. Darryl, the 'KJ' is AMAZING! This dude can sing and ensure everyone gets their chance. Everyone else is friendly and it was a lively night. Not overly crowded and I'd definitely go back. 4 tv's above bar, plenty of seating along the bar area and in back. It's in small lot, so parking is a hit or miss. Just grab a spot on the street or in the dirt lot next door. Great bar, great people and definitely check out karaoke night. The highlight: this rocker who was extremely nice sang Pantera. I've tried to like Courts, it was much better back in the day. Gave it another try in December cause the bf went there for some birthday drinks. The weekend evening bartender is an unfriendly bitch and her drinks suck. Don't taste a trace of alcohol in them. When I mentioned it she gave me a dirty look and walked off. Yes it is a dive bar! Great female bartender the evenings we've stopped by. Very reasonable drink prices and they have a large selection of liquors. There are pool tables, dart boards, dice and cups upon request, several TVs, karaoke (depending on when you go). This is a true dive bar, and, as always, I use that as a term of endearment. Anywhere where you can by lotto tickets on your way out from a vending machine is OK in my book. Service is okay.... But the people are unique, helpful, and kind! Drinks are also almost at the "divey" price as well. Some older lady grabbed Boyfriend's butt, said I was "her girl" and proceeded to kiss my temple. Fun times. I got carded, though I do look pretty young. We asked for darts later and the bartender said she had none. Tuesdays and some other day, I forget, are tournament nights for both pool and darts so pick your nights accordingly! It is $1 per player for darts, and the actual darts can be found in a plastic container at the bar. People here helped us pick the appropriate darts game for us newbies, found us darts, and explained why it was so busy (and why it was a faux pas that I walked up to an empty dart machine to read the sign). Some other hoser said that you can't rate a dive more than three stars. Well, take your own advice and don't hang out here. Go stand shoulder to shoulder downtown, or get stuck with a crappy DJ, or wait 10 minutes to get served. Not here. This is a true dive, and the word "dive" does not have the hipster connotation that it does elsewhere. This bar has friendly regulars, a good jukebox, pool, foos and a shuffleboard. The bartenders are always friendly, and the drinks strong. This is the place to hang out with friends or alone. There's also TV's on two different satelittes, so you can always catch the game. I would totally give this bar more stars and a better review if the bartender Erin wasn't so damn rude! I showed up with some friends and we basically had to ply her away from a group of guys she was flirting with just to order a drink, which she ended up making TERRIBLY!!! Then, for the next ten minutes I watched her totally ignore some girl who was waiting to order because she was too busy talking to another group of guys. The girl finally spoke up and I heard her say, "Hey! Do you think I can order my drink sometime tonight?" Then Erin walked over to her and rudely asked "What do you want?"...... (A penis prehaps. Maybe then we might get some better service) The bar itself is pretty fun. I do plan on going back, just not on an Erin night. I mean really!
