Cousin Cafe used to be one of my go to place when I'm craving for some HongKong style cafe food, but I notice their food quality has been going downhill ever since pandemic. I ordered baked seafood rice in cream sauce around noon today, what I got was extremely disappointed. First off, price had increased (A Lot!) and this lunch cost me $17.12 after tax. I understand a lot of small businesses are struggling due to COVID and limitations on dine in so they need to make up some profit for their business. I don't mind paying more if I get good quality of food. But this baked rice, nothing taste like what it used to be. It was not baked long enough so the seafood and rice were lukewarm. In terms of seafood I only found a bunch of frozen fish filet and imitation crab, 2 pieces of small shrimp, a little bit of squid then call it a seafood rice. On top of it, this rice is completely tasteless and bland even you see there were cheese in it. If you want to charge $17 for a rice plate you better be delivering the right quality of food to your customer and they got what they have paid for! I'm truly disappointed with my experience today and I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. There are a lot of better cafe options in Fremont/Newark area so if you plan to visit Cousin Cafe please think twice and save yourself a trip. read more

It's a Hong Kong style tea restaurant. We visited there 2 days in a row, one is happy hour (Daily 3:00pm - 6:00 pm or 9:00pm - close); the other is weekend breakfast. Especially like their soup, noodles, porridges, The crispy fried chicken wings are recommended too. The Price is pretty reasonable, especially when you visit in happy hour! The breakfast is ok. I think I'm just not a huge fan of Hong Kong style cafe food. While I absolutely love the more traditional Cantonese food, I don't really like some of the fusion dishes with a lot of cheese and tomato sauce. I don't find these fusion dishes to be very good. Baked Pork Chop- we had the one that was half cream sauce and half gravy. Didn't really care for either sauces.The pork chop was also just meh. Garlic Chicken Wings- they were good, but tasted a little dry to me. Egg white, scallop, and seafood fried rice- this is my go to fried rice dish whenever I'm eating Cantonese food. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they put a decent amount of seafood in their fried rice. This was the only dish that I liked here. They do have happy hour from 3-6pm and 9pm- close where a lot of their dishes are a few dollars off so I might come back to try their happy hour. read more

Hong Kong style cafe with a clever name that serves pretty decent food. Cousin Cafe's name is really clever. It is of no relation to its real deal namesake in Hong Kong (can you say trademark infringement?). Cousin Cafe in Hong Kong was owned by movie director Alfred Cheung. At one point, he owned close to a dozen cafes that spread across Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The word "Cousin", in Hong Kong lingo, refers to a young man or woman from mainland China in a somewhat derogatory way because of the cultural friction between the former British colony and its current Communist overlord. Enough of the history lesson. I met a couple friends at Cousin Cafe for lunch a few Mondays ago. It was about 12:30pm when we got there and the place was only half full. We were seated quickly by one of the servers at a table close to the entrance. Seating was a bit cramped since they managed to put quite a few tables into the tiny restaurant. The environment appeared clean. Walls were plastered with pictures of different dishes. Our server gave us a stack of menus. There was one for lunch specials, one for breakfast (not sure why they gave us that one since it was lunch time), a regular menu, and a couple others. After we sorted through all the reading materials, we ordered the following: - Baked Pork Chop Fried Rice (with fried egg on top) + Iced Hong Kong Milk Tea ($8.50 + $1) - Baked Pork Chop Rice in Twin Sauces (cream and tomato) + Iced Lemon Tea ($8.50 + $1) - Spareribs in Black Bean Sauce Rice Bucket (~$9, served with a bowl of lettuce in beef brisket sauce) It took about a little more than 10 minutes for our food to arrive. My baked pork chop fried rice was quite good. Two pretty thick pieces of pan fried pork loin laid on top of the fried rice and smothered in a robust tomato sauce. The pork loin pieces remained moist despite being pan fried. The fried egg added a different dimension to the dish. The runny yolk provided a level of creaminess to the dish when mixed with the tomato sauce. The milk tea was very good. It was creamy and had a strong tea taste. I was pleased with the quality of my food. I heard no complaints from the others about their food. Our server was quite friendly. We asked for a couple extra things and she took care of them promptly. There is one thing I have to mention. For a small cafe, some of their a la carte dishes are quite expensive (~$15 to $18 per dish). My recommendation is stick with their Hong Kong style cafe food and avoid ordering a la carte dishes. Today I went to get something for breakfast (8-11). The staff were nice and friendly and greeted me in Cantonese. After a quick look at the menu, I ordered the Beef Brisket Rice Noodle Soup with Hot Milk Tea. The order came out in no time. Both drink and soup were hot and warmed me up on a cool summer day. I've been wanting to try the won tons here for a while and well I had the opportunity today to order them! I drove into the little plaza on the side of NewPark Mall right next to Newark Memorial High School...ah the memories of Knights Video Games and Service Merchandise...oh I digress. I parked closer to King of Dumplings as I was going to order other food besides the won ton noodle soup from Cousin Cafe. There were still a fair amount of people still having lunch and I strolled right towards the cashier. I think she spoke to me in some chinese dialect and I sheepishly had to answer back in English. I ordered my food to go and for $8.71 I paid in cash as they don't take anything but cash. They told me 10 minutes and I just hung around the seating in the front. It didn't take all of 10 minutes so swift it was. I took the food home and plated it. It had a fair amount of won tons around 7 i think with spinach and egg noodles. The soup base was not super flavorful but better than the napa cabbage won ton soup we had the day prior. The egg noodles were cooked perfectly and had a nice bite to them. Now let's get to the piece de resistance. The wonton. The wontons were definitely good. no small fake shrimp in them or miniscule/microscopic amounts. Full on shrimps cut at most in half which made the won tons very flavorful. So overall I wish I could just get the won tons by themselves without the soup or the noodles, but c'est la vie. If I'm ever back in the area. I might try other menu items out but I won't go out of my way to come back. read more

I guess this is a good spot to get your Hong Kong Cafe fix if you are living in this area. Cousin Cafe is a small shop with limited seating. It is more like a "eat and go" place, and definitely not a place you can "chill and relax" at. Visit the restaurant around 4:30pm on a weekend and it was packed with people. It's a good thing that their turnover is pretty fast. Ordered the following for my afternoon tea: Garlic Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Hong Kong Milk Tea. What's not to love about this place? Friendly Asian ladies and a late night happy hour menu with tasty staple dishes! Service - super nice ladies, but because I speak Canto? Usually at Hk cafes, like Venus and some other one in Fremont, they are run by guys my age that aren't typically friendly in my experiences. The ladies took care of my and my bf quite well and even recommended substitutions because we ordered too much food haha. Food - Condensed milk toast - who doesn't love this? The bread was so fluffy but crisp on the edges and surface. Just enough condensed milk on top to give it that sweetness without it making the bread soggy. Chow fun beef tendon noodle.. Or something of the sort. Pure deliciousness! Add some chili paste from the table and the tastiness has exceeded over 9000 in my book. No picture because it was that good. Mini pork chop over rice - cheesiness, maybe fried rice and tender pork chop. Smaller than the big one, hence the mini, but great size to be able to try everything without not ordering it lol. I dined in here with my girlfriend at 6pm on a Monday. We were pretty much the only customers dining in. We noticed a lot of people ordering takeout. This place offers a generous discount if you pay with cash for takeout. The service here was piss poor bad for an Asian restaurant. I'm Asian, so I know not to expect service like The French Laundry. But this was beyond terrible... There were two "waitresses," and they were both nonexistent. One stayed behind the counter the whole time, and the other started eating her dinner while we were there. We had to yell for them to give us more tea because they were chit chatting a storm to each other. Even pho restaurants will have someone refill your water. No one was taking away the empty plates on our table, which was pretty crowded since we wanted to try several things. The trash service was a huge factor for why I deducted 2 stars. We ordered the pork spare ribs in black bean sauce, roti with curry, curry beef stew with noodles, and baked pork chop and egg with noodles. Shout out to anyone reading this who eats at Shooting Star in Oakland Chinatown. This restaurant is practically the same as Shooting Star, but I like Shooting Star more. The curry beef here is great. The beef is soft and it tastes amazing. I will definitely get that again if I ever have to come back here. The roti with curry wasn't remarkable. It's similar to palata bread you get at Burmese restaurants. Except they gave us this tiny plastic sauce container of curry for two big pieces of roti. We had to ask for more curry. I wouldn't get this again. I'd rather get it at a Burmese restaurant. The pork spare ribs was good. There's a bed of rice below the pork, and it goes well with it. Although this was good, it wasn't amazing. I've had better at a dim sum restaurant. I can live without this one here. The baked pork chop and egg with the noodles was kind of gross. It had a gravy sauce on it instead of the tomato sauce I'm used to at Shooting Star. There are baked dishes here that say tomato sauce on it, so maybe those would have tasted differently? Shooting Star makes WAY better baked pork chop dishes. On top of the two stars I've subtracted due to the service, I'm subtracting another star because I ate an egg shell in the fried egg with this dish. I HATE egg shells in my eggs. Only a noob would leave a shell in the egg. It's not hard at all to keep shells out of your eggs. You can see that sh*t. Just pull it out. Or get good at crackin' son. Anyways, this dish was an overall disappointment to us. Parking is plentiful in this plaza. I can't wait to try other places around this plaza, but never this place again. Shooting Star is closer to me if I ever want Hong Kong Cafe food. And I'd MUCH rather go to Shooting Star (which still has kind of bad service/food) compared to this place. If I ever do come here again, it would be takeout. But like I said, it's not worth driving to this place for me. This place is worth a try for anyone though. You may have a better time. And I heard service is much better during lunch time. But you should try Shooting Star and compare the two. read more

During those times they usually include a free drink, I always opt for the lemon iced tea, which is deliciously refreshing. OR their HK style Coffee Milk Tea sweetens which soooo perfect. Food talk: (1) Garlic chicken wings - simple and bomb. (2) Shrimp egg noodle - light in flavor but perfect with just a little pepper and be sure you get the eggs WET. It becomes this messy slimy egg shrimp chow fun, it's freakn delicious! (3) Brisket curry - OK on its own or even better as a dipping sauce for below (4) THE pork cutlet, the best thing here! I ordered wonton noodle soup for take-out and when I opened up the bag, the container for the broth was half the amount of the container containing the noodles, spinach and wontons. I don't understand why they chose to skimp on the broth but the noodles are over stuffed in the separate container. They need to give the broth in the same size container for the overstuffed noodles/wonton container so that it will be an even dish. Wonton noodle soup broth was tasty. I've loved this place since high school, that was 20 years ago. I'm so happy they are still open. The staff are the same as when I used to go. I second someone else's review about appreciating it more after moving to LA. It will always feel like home. Do not expect stellar service, just easy, consistent, home style cantonese style food. Overall probably the best Hk style cafe in fremont/newark region. They do a good job on most of the menu, the only gripe I have is that their baked tomato sauce pork chop rice is not good. The sauce doesn't have the right tomato/ketchup flavor like it should. Venus still probably make the best bake pork chop rice, but their dine in situation over there is a bit suspect. Other than that, this is our go to place for HK style cafe, we visit this place at least once a month, sometimes every week! Service is top notch for Hk style cafe, food come out fast and hot, the place clean enough. They have a few tables outside, which let us bring our dog. I think they were speaking Cantonese to us even though I don't look Chinese. 3) We ordered something like "Spam, Egg, and Macaroni" and that's pretty much what we got. I feel like it's hard to come by good Hong Kong cuisine, which is sort of its own thing. You can say it's a part of Cantonese cuisine...but at the same time, it isn't! But anyways...if you're in the Fremont/Newark area, come to Cousin Cafe! Not only do they have almost everything you could possibly crave on their expansive menu, they even had special menus! I have yet to try their breakfast or lunch specials, but you can probably find me at Cousin Cafe at least once a week during their weekday happy hour, which is from 3 to 6 PM. Their happy hour menu offers full-meal portions at about half the normal price. The one I always have to get is the pan-fried rice rolls that come with sesame sauce and hoisin. The rolls are served hot off the pan with a little bit of tangy sauce at the bottom and are chewy yet crispy. Other favorites include the chicken katsu curry, the pork ribs over rice, and the pork and century egg congee/porridge. The happy hour menu also has classics such as HK style baked bolognese spaghetti, spam and egg instant noodle soup, and spam and macaroni. The regular menu has so much more and the portions are quite big and very filling...enough for at least two meals. My favorite items off the regular menu are the baked spaghetti with twin sauce served with a pork/chicken cutlet and the chicken and wonton soup. Service isn't anything special to rave about, but they get the job done. Come and try, there's definitely something for everyone on the menu. read more

I come here quite often with friends and family, because they open early (8am) and close late (11pm). They do not serve items on the regular menu until 11am though. Their portions are huge! I came with my friends one morning and ordered their porridge meal from their breakfast menu, it came with a huge bowl of porridge and a good sized plate of rice noodle. Their beef stews are so flavorful and juicy; they do give you enough meat for your meal as well. Customer service is good, not the greatest but at least one of them did smile and checked on us during our meal. I will continue to come back here, but I recommend after 11am for more food choices. read more
