LENT 2026: FIRST MARCH FRIDAY - SWEET AND SOUR ROCK COD FILLETS Last Friday for lunch I needed to eat fish. At the last minute I decided to search through Yelp by typing seafood. The first name that popped up was Good Neighbor Seafood Restaurant. I've eating here multiple times. This was the first time I ate here during Lent Friday. I was thinking about sweet and sour fillets of rock cod rice plate lunch special or a la carte item of fillets of rock cod with corn in creamy sauce. I decided to get the sweet and sour rock cod rice plate. I've had whole rock cod in sweet and sour so I was intrigued how the fillet of rock cod would taste. For appetizer I ordered deep fried squid. Sweet and sour dishes are my guilty Chinese food pleasures. Even though the sauce is addicting too much of it makes the breading soggy. Also if the sauce is too thick you feel bloated. The first dish served was the deep fried squid. It wasn't rubbery yet had the bite. The breading was lightly coated so you can taste the squid. I came here for the sweet and sour fillet of rock cod. From appearance the fillets were lightly sauced. When I tasted the rock cod the breading was still crispy. That's how a sweet and sour dish should be a lightly sauced dish that you not only can taste the sauce but also can experience the crispiness of the breading. I've mentioned I've had whole rock cod in sweet and sour. How does the sweet and sour fillets of rock cod compare to the whole rock cod? I like the fillets of rock cod as they were moist. From my experience the meat of the whole rock cod tends to be dry because it is deep fried. With a name like Good Neighbor Seafood Restaurant you can't go wrong by eating there on Fridays during Lent.

We've been a few times now. And I have to say it's been some of the best American Chinese food you can find in the east bay. We enjoyed the salted fish and chicken fried rice, the orange chicken was great, our absolute favorite is the salt and pepper fish. It's light and crispy and incredibly flavorful. Another time we got the clams with black bean sauce and the seafood clay pot. Both were delicious as well! Highly recommended if you're ever in the Newark area!

It's been a long time since I've been back to Good Neighbor best Chinese around and service always great. it's still just as good as I remember. The food is top-tier, we ordered combination fried rice, sweet and sour cod, salt and pepper ribs, and salt and pepper wings everything was packed with flavor. The combination fried rice is a favorite (the egg is the best part)and the salt and pepper ribs are perfectly crispy and crunchy, just like the wings. Every bite is perfect, and served hot fresh off the fryer. The cod is always an all time favorite too. Coming back gave me the same nostalgic feeling, true comfort food every time.

Excellent neighborhood spot that I will be putting into the rotation. Generous portions and very courteous and welcoming staff While I was one of maybe three tables on a Monday evening, the phone did not stop ringing for takeout orders, especially the three dishes for $39 deal. Will have to find a bigger group of people to come back with so I can try more of the dishes!

I came with my family to celebrate my grandfather's birthday since it's his favorite restaurant to go to. I remember when they used to have a fish tank, which is now removed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place hasn't really changed ever since I was a lot younger and it's looks much older. Perhaps, renovation can help.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We selected different entrees, which are fairly cheap. The food is good though, but the issue is that the flounder got smaller in size is that we easily finished the whole thing. Another issue is the service, because we have to go up to them and ask for waters. There were times that my dad had to go up to them at least twice already. There may be other requests, but easily forgot what else we asked. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also like how they probably kept their work phone since I've been hearing the same ringtone for decades.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This place is very affordable with today's inflation cost. They have options that you can order 3 courses for $38.99. Most of the dishes on the menu are below $15.99. The foods are delicious. The seasoning are just on the spot. Highly recommend this place if you're wanting Chinese food & affordable.

Best Value and taste summed up this place. The 3-item menu had a vast offerings compared to other restaurants with similar packages. The portions are out of this world, and the taste is as home cooking as you can get. The most Americanized dish is Walnut Prawns... I have nothing against Walnut Prawns but with all the other authentic Chinese dishes, that will be the last thing I order. But I am sure it is good as so many people ordered it when we visited. The service was a bit rushed but very friendly. They are busy. If you are expecting white glove treatment this is not the place and you are not paying the $$$ either. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Do expect noisy atmosphere typical to small neighborhood Chinese restaurants.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But we are not there for the ambience, just food. If you want yummy big portions Chinese food with amazing value, you are at the right place.

Good Neighbor is pretty delicious with generous portions for cheap. They got a 3 entree for $35.99 deal. They also give complimentary soup for all diners. Today was my second time here this month. Last time we had 12 people at table. Today was four. Everything last time and today were flavorful. The dishes we had were: 26. Black Pepper Shredded Beef 31. Seafood Claypot 34. Stir Fry with Lotus Root The restaurant was probably an old fashioned ice cream parlor before. You can see old school light shades with ice cream on it. Who cares about spending decor when they make the food so affordable especially in this economy!

Good Neighbor has been a neighborhood staple for decades. It's an affordable restaurant: as of November 2024, it costs $35.99 for three dishes on the special menu. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is plenty of seating, and it was pretty filled on Friday evening.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Hope they continue to stay in the neighborhood

From the moment we arrived, the hospitality felt a bit inconsistent. Our server wasn't very friendly, which made the experience feel a little off from the start. That said, the inside of the restaurant was really nice--clean, with a cool atmosphere and plenty of TVs. Unfortunately, the soda machine seemed like it needed maintenance, as the drinks came out flat or had a strange taste. As for the food, the garlic noodles were definitely a highlight--delicious and flavorful. However, the seafood boil was disappointing. It lacked seasoning, and everything seemed to be sitting in oil rather than a well-balanced sauce. For a group of 15 ordering crab, king crab legs, and shrimp, we expected much more flavor and quality for the price. Overall, we really wanted to love this place, but the experience didn't quite meet our expectations for such a special occasion.

A long-overdue review!…read more My husband and I had dinner here when it had just opened, almost seven years ago. Looking through old photos recently brought back memories, and I realized I never got around to sharing our experience. We had a wonderful time--the food was delicious, the service was great, and overall it was a very enjoyable dining experience. While I never made it back, my husband has visited a few times with friends and always had good things to say. The main reason we haven't returned as a family is because both of our boys (now adults) are allergic to seafood, and I usually prefer having them with us when we dine out. But after seeing these photos again, I think it's finally time for another visit and see if it's just as good as I remember!

When I arrived, I politely asked for a table in an area that was clearly available. The restaurant was basically empty at the time, but Mirella gave me what appeared to be one of the worst tables in the restaurant. When I asked about getting a different table, her attitude toward me was rude and unwelcoming. I understand that restaurants have seating policies and that sometimes certain tables may be reserved, but I believe customers should still be treated with courtesy and respect. In this situation, I felt that I was treated unnecessarily poorly, especially considering that there were plenty of other tables available. I am not writing this complaint to cause trouble for anyone. I simply believe management should be aware of how customers are being treated. I hope you can look into this situation and make sure that guests are welcomed and treated respectfully regardless of which table they request. Thank you for taking the time to hear my concern. And by the way the food and the server were great Except the host Mirella Thank you

At first we were skeptical, but we also enjoyed this recommendation a lot as well. For the price of the "creative combo" and the amount of food that you get it's almost 2 meals for me which is a really great deal. The vibe is awesome, they have a great bar area with a couple of TVs playing sports, and the music was definitely bumping. The staff was incredibly nice and super attentive to our table the entire night. Food-wise, this spot doesn't miss a beat. One of the best surprises was that they offer fresh crawfish, which is pretty rare to find at most seafood boil places. My party arrived around 6:38 PM and added our name to the waitlist for dinner. While waiting, it became increasingly clear that more than half of the dining room had already finished their meals. Many tables appeared to be staying simply to watch the soccer match on the TVs. I completely understand wanting to enjoy the game, but at the same time there were 4-5 parties waiting for tables, with groups of various sizes. This raises an important question: at what point does management step in to balance hospitality with serving waiting guests? While no one should be rushed through their meal, when tables have clearly finished dining and a long wait is building, there should be some effort to manage table turnover during peak dinner hours. After waiting about 45 minutes with no indication that seating would happen anytime soon, we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. Ironically, we didn't receive the text that our table was ready until 8:07 PM--nearly an hour and a half after we first checked in. The food may be great, but based on this experience, the waitlist management left a lot to be desired. I hope Backyard Bayou reviews how they handle busy nights and finds a better balance between accommodating guests who want to linger and serving the many customers waiting to dine.
