My family and I are loyal customers of Good Neighbor Seafood Restaurant. They serve a wide variety of southern Chinese fare in an unpretentious and friendly atmosphere. Most people, local and from afar, come here for their 3-dish menu. When we first started eating here more than a decade ago, it was $19.50. But with inflation surging once again, the price has gone up to $38.99, which is still reasonable compared to other Cantonese restaurants in the East Bay. Our most recent visit took place on 11/15/2025. After attending the Bolo Yeung "You Are Next!" Autograph Signing Event at the Great Mall, four of us came here for dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was busy when we walked in at around 6:20pm. The place was 90% full, with many others waiting for their takeout orders.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We scored the last round table. The friendly tall waitress came by to say hi and dropped out a couple menus. (For those of you who don't know who Bolo is, he's the original "Beast of the East" and was featured in movies such as "Enter the Dragon", "Bloodsport", and "Double Impact".) We ordered a total of seven dishes. The quality was good as usual. The standouts were the scrambled eggs with shrimp and yellow chives (soft and creamy inside), Peking pork chops (crispy, meaty pork chops perfectly coated in a tangy sauce/best in the East Bay), and the bean curd strips and pork stir-fry. The tall waitress provided excellent service. She talked to us like family and was very efficient. She's been with this restaurant for a long time and if I recall correctly, she is mainly doing this for kicks (and some spending money). Have had two great experiences here in the past few months. Recently, I had a dinner meeting with a colleague from the east coast, who wanted to try Good Neighbor. The restaurant looked full, but we were seated immediately at a small table. The service was friendly, informative and quick with the food. We wanted to try a bunch of different things, but our waitress actually told us we wouldn't be able to finish the first four dishes we ordered. She was right; we appreciated her help and took boxes to go. The food was great and my friend flew back to Connecticut happy. In February, my wife threw a bridal shower and decided to use Good Neighbor to provide all the food. She went to order on her lunch break and met with the owners to choose the dishes. They were helpful and informative. The day of the shower, they helped me load all the boxes into the vehicle, using a cart for transport. The important thing to note was the cost was reasonable for feeding 20 people. The food was enjoyed by all the guests and we had leftovers for dinner! You just can't beat that today. LENT 2026: FIRST MARCH FRIDAY - SWEET AND SOUR ROCK COD FILLETS Last Friday for lunch I needed to eat fish. At the last minute I decided to search through Yelp by typing seafood. The first name that popped up was Good Neighbor Seafood Restaurant. I've eating here multiple times. This was the first time I ate here during Lent Friday. I was thinking about sweet and sour fillets of rock cod rice plate lunch special or a la carte item of fillets of rock cod with corn in creamy sauce. I decided to get the sweet and sour rock cod rice plate. I've had whole rock cod in sweet and sour so I was intrigued how the fillet of rock cod would taste. For appetizer I ordered deep fried squid. Sweet and sour dishes are my guilty Chinese food pleasures. Even though the sauce is addicting too much of it makes the breading soggy. Also if the sauce is too thick you feel bloated. The first dish served was the deep fried squid. It wasn't rubbery yet had the bite. The breading was lightly coated so you can taste the squid. I came here for the sweet and sour fillet of rock cod. From appearance the fillets were lightly sauced. When I tasted the rock cod the breading was still crispy. That's how a sweet and sour dish should be a lightly sauced dish that you not only can taste the sauce but also can experience the crispiness of the breading. I've mentioned I've had whole rock cod in sweet and sour. How does the sweet and sour fillets of rock cod compare to the whole rock cod? I like the fillets of rock cod as they were moist. From my experience the meat of the whole rock cod tends to be dry because it is deep fried. We've been a few times now. And I have to say it's been some of the best American Chinese food you can find in the east bay. We enjoyed the salted fish and chicken fried rice, the orange chicken was great, our absolute favorite is the salt and pepper fish. It's light and crispy and incredibly flavorful. It's been a long time since I've been back to Good Neighbor best Chinese around and service always great. it's still just as good as I remember. The food is top-tier, we ordered combination fried rice, sweet and sour cod, salt and pepper ribs, and salt and pepper wings everything was packed with flavor. The combination fried rice is a favorite (the egg is the best part)and the salt and pepper ribs are perfectly crispy and crunchy, just like the wings. I came with my family to celebrate my grandfather's birthday since it's his favorite restaurant to go to. I remember when they used to have a fish tank, which is now removed. I have nothing against Walnut Prawns but with all the other authentic Chinese dishes, that will be the last thing I order. But I am sure it is good as so many people ordered it when we visited. This is a hidden gem of a place I grew up eating at with my family, and it has easily been over two decades. They offer a great variety of dishes, and I honestly don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. The pick 3 combo is our go to because the options feel endless and you can always mix things up. My new go-to Chinese restaurant in the Newark/Fremont area. The first time I came we had Grace as our waitress and she was extremely helpful and kind with her recommendations and friendly banter. We always order extra to have for leftover and meals throughout the week and they kindly package up the leftovers at the end of our meal for us. Our top dishes every time would be the salt and pepper fish, orange chicken, clay pots and seafood/shrimp fried rice. This is a take out review. But these are the things we had: - Sweet and sour pork: small pork pieces that were quite battered. The sauce wasn't special but there were some pieces of more batter than pork. - Salt and pepper fish: pretty good, and well flavored - Bean curd and pork: tried to order with chives like I saw on the menu in a picture but they couldn't figure that out. A few people were dining in and we were seated right away. They offer lunch specials and also 3 items for $35.99. We opted for the 3 items so that we can share. We had their chicken wings in garlic sauce, salted fish chicken fried rice, and string beans with ground pork. The service was very fast and we got our order within 10 mins. The food portions are very generous. The fried rice was good for more than 2 people, string beans were served in a big bowl and they served 8 big chicken wings. All of the times are very delicious. We enjoyed our meal and were able to take home leftovers. The price is not bad for 3 items. They also offer party trays for catering. I was participating in a training at the George M. Silliman Community Activity Center in Newark when we broke for lunch. I had an hour, and I didn't feel like fast food. I knew where there were a cluster of Chinese restaurants and headed that direction. I've seen Good Neighbor many times before and decided to give them a try. I walked in the door and found that I had used the door furthest away from the cashier, so I crossed the restaurant where the cashier was taking a to-go order. I grabbed a menu and waited my turn. Another guest had entered through the "front" door and was also waiting. I asked which of us had arrived first and he said we arrived at the same time. I told him I was ordering one item for lunch, and he stated that he had a more complicated order. The cashier finished taking the order and took it to the kitchen. She then proceeded to a table with four guests and took their order and returned to the kitchen again. When she came back out, she was carrying a to-go order for another guest who had just walked in. After this customer paid for her order, she stood at her station and asked the "front" door customer if he had called in an order. That's when he pointed to me. I proceeded to order Seafood Chow Fun (not on the menu) and she had a difficult time figuring out how to enter it onto her electronic ordering system. After she managed to do so and she collected my money, she began to leave the cashier station when she saw the "front" door guest again and asked if we were together. When we both said no, she finally paid attention to him and took his order, which wasn't so complicated but a bit larger, $127. It took quite a while for my order to come out so "front" door guy and I had a nice conversation. Good Neighbor is apparently one of his go-to restaurants and he said that they often were on the slower side, probably because there were only two working the front of the house today. I had noticed that another server was taking an order on the telephone, but no one was actually serving any of the five tables with guests. While we were chatting, the other server brought out a bagged dish from the kitchen and put it on the pick-up table. When I asked if it was mine, she looked at the ticket and announced that it was Seafood Chow Fun and I said that it was mine. She then proceeded to hand me the bag. When I asked if there was a fork inside, she asked me if I needed one. I found that to be odd. By the time I got back to the Community Center and parked, I took about ten minutes to gobble about 1/3 of my Chow Fun and then returned to the classroom. I will not to this restaurant again if I'm in any kind of rush. If I'm looking to sit down for decent food at a reasonable price, I'm willing to give them another try. My Chow Fun, while not on the menu, was pretty good when it was hot. Later in the afternoon, after class, it was still okay but not quite as tasty. With 1/3 of the order still sitting in the refrigerator, I have found so far, 1 shrimp, several pieces of fish fillet, some sliced up seafood balls, and calamari. There were lots of greens onions, yellow onion and bean sprouts which really added a lot of flavor and crunch. It seemed that the seafood had been cooked separately and then added to the fun and veg because the seafood had a saltier sauce. As Harvey K. and others have stated in an earlier reviews, Good Neighbor has a 58-item menu where you can order three dishes for $32.99 and additional dishes for $10.99. The selection is quite reasonable. I'm not sure if the portion sizes are the same as ordering ala carte but I'm guessing they are. The savings per dish ranges from 50-cents to $1.50. The one thing that appears to be missing (or simply not noted on the menu) is that restaurants that used to offer this type of menu also included Soup of the Day and Steamed Rice. Times are tough and restaurants are struggling to survive. Better customer service will help, but good food can trump poor service. read more

Our tab for all of this was $73 ( before tip), so definitely budget friendly. The food overall is seasoned well and the service is quick. The severs are nice and make sure you are doing well throughout your meal. Overall the seating inside can get filled quickly since many bigger groups come in. Totally unassuming in the middle of the shopping plaza, in fact kind of looks like unoccupied from afar; shabby and unchanged for the last unknown number of decades. Don't judge a book by its cover! Was scrolling through other Yelpers' feeds when I came across this place with a 3 for $3x.99 special. Very few Chinese places still offer this type of menu special and as of this writing, the menu of 3 dishes comes out to $36.51 after tax. The menu from fellow Yelpers remain unchanged, there are many classic dishes to choose from so let's try a few. The portions and taste do not disappoint! It's just your 'Good Neighbor' of many many years who remain true and dependable. For takeout, there is no free soup of the day while dine-in would include that. I think it's one of those IYKYK places. Wouldn't classify them as a hidden gem but certainly a great help when you don't want to cook a meal and want something a step above orange chicken or broccoli w/beef.
