This is my family's go to spot for Chinese food. I've recommended them to everyone I know. Consistency is most important to me when eating somewhere, and Asia Express in consistently good. The Newark location specifically, the Union City location was way disappointing compared to Newark. The food is delicious and fresh, the walnut prawns made to order is my favorite! Any time anyone is sick in my house our first stop is here for the hot and sour soup. The service is always great too, in person and through telephone. They've always been warm and inviting when we come in. I don't think they offer dine in after Covid but the neighboring room looks super cute with the umbrella ceiling. The pricing is great too, way more reasonably priced for good food and big portions compared to other places I've gone to that are way overpriced for mediocre food. We always get combos and do half chowmein and half fried rice. Hot and sour soup is a must, orange chicken and egg rolls are also part of our usual order. read more

I'm quite shocked how much food they gave me after all of the Chinese takeouts I've been too! It's no wonder that this place has received higher ratings. This plate I have can get you full in no time unless you share it or save up for dinner later. The food here is even tasty. That two-item combo costs around $13! I heard that this restaurant also serves à la carte, but you can also go through fast-food style like what I had today. Place wasn't really big but the seating area in a way stands out. You can probably wait there until your order is ready. Also, I was scrolling through the foods from the display. Seems that many people ate here during lunch while I came here for dinner. Doesn't seem that they have plenty of options from the display for combo orders, but that's alright. Honestly, I thought that the Spicy Orange Chicken would be very spicy, but gladly, it isn't. I was hoping that I don't end up drinking too much water from severe spiciness. I have tried the regular Orange Chicken from a similar place, but didn't like it. Update: We tried 2 different food selections. Won Ton soup and beef chow fun. Won Ton Soup - 4/5 The broth was tasty, not overly salty. The pork won ton didn't have the firmness that I would have liked. It was more on the soft side. Taste wise, it was good. Just the softness of the pork filling needed to be more firm. I loved that the soup included shrimp, char sui, and Bok Choy. For the won ton filling, maybe mixing the shrimp and pork together might make the filling more firm and more delicious. Overall, I liked the won ton soup. I would order this soup again. Beef chow fun - 4/5 This noodle selection was good. The chow fun noodles were darker than I expected, probably due to the soy sauce that was mixed in for taste. The onions mixed in wasn't overwhelming, and blended well with the chow fun noodles. I wish there was more flavor from a well seasoned wok that infuses in the chow fun that I've tasted at other Chinese restaurants. But I liked their chow fun, and would order it again too. I am happy with selections that we chose. You get enough to share, and the price is reasonable. I would recommend giving Asian Express a visit for your Chinese's food fix. read more

It was as good as I expected! I saw a YouTube video from 3 months ago by eatlikeanapex where he went to this takeout place in Newark. It looked delicious so I went there this afternoon around 4 pm. There was only one customer in front of me when I arrived, but when I left a crowd of at least 6 customers were patiently waiting behind me. I felt guilty for ordering so much! I ordered a total of 4 Regular Combo boxes w 2 additional items each, $11.99 per box. Considering how they overstuffed the boxes this is a deal! I had half/half fried rice/chow mein. Jalapeño chicken was not too spicy and the batter was light. Black bean pork riblets Orange chicken Beef w broccoli Popcorn chicken It was so much food I could only eat half. Eating a side order of jalapeño chicken for the drive home contributed, man it was delicious. When I mentioned the YouTube video to the nice lady behind the counter she immediately remembered and even said the items that eatlikeanapex ordered! Excellent customer service! I was debating whether I should put ONE star (for charging a credit card fee) or FIVE stars as my review -- so first, just an FYI: their prices are for CASH ONLY however, they do accept Credit Card as payment but they charge YOU a percentage fee for using card. My bill was probably approx $250 but after taxes and credit card fees, my grand total was $300. Here's what I bought: Medium tray of Chicken Fried Rice $60 (I wish there were more veggies added to this - like bag of frozen mixed veggies to give it more color), Medium tray of Combo Chow Mein $65 (came with chicken, BBQ pork, and shrimp) - it was good, 30 pieces of Veggie Eggrolls ($1.75 each) so approx $53 - not bad but I wouldn't reorder, and Medium tray of Salt & Pepper Spare Ribs $75 with slices of jalapeño - this was the best and so good! I'd definitely reorder that. The customer service was excellent. The woman working carried each tray and placed them in my trunk. She gave me two sauces (sweet and sour and spicy chili) and included a few packets of soy sauce. There was a basket of fortune cookies but she didn't offer me to take any nor pre-pack a bagful of fortune cookies for me to take to my party. It was my first time ordering with them. I would come back and give them another chance. However, I would consider other options due to cash only vs credit card fee pricing -- especially when I'm hosting a party. Ugh, I want to gatekeep so bad, but I shouldn't, because this place deserves a lot of love and recognition. A quick fix for Chinese food should be accomplished here. The place is small and is really for take out. But the food is delicious! I got a spicy orange chicken. Although it was not very spicy at all, the sauce was terrific. My plate also included jalapeño chicken (hella good) and vegetable chow mein. The chow main noodles were long and chewy and not overly greasy. Sometimes chow mein is too oily but theirs is just right. They pile the food up pretty high in the to go plate, so much so that I ended up just sharing with my partner. And the prices, superb! Although I'm afraid they might raid them if more people start finding out about this place. I'm coming back again and again to get quick, hearty and really good Chinese take out. Appreciate this restaurant and the woman working. My 6 year old wanted a two item but we only ordered him 1 item, and the lady had added some broccoli which would have been his second option. Super nice of her. And instead of buying can drinks, we decided to buy a two liter and the lady had given us some cups. I say all this to say, they go above and beyond for their customers. In the past I have gone there several times to get food and they were good. Last night I got combo fried rice and Mongolian beef - the rice was good but the Mongolian beef was bad. It was very very bad. We threw it away. There was a bit of rancid smell. I called them up today. Here is the weird thing. They said to bring back the food and they will see what they can do with it. Just the name of this place sounded like it would be quick and easy for a late night dinner after my run on Thursday. And I was right. Loved the colorful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, along with a plush sloth sitting on the ledge, adding to the random and quirky decor. Staff was super friendly, too. I ordered veggie and chicken egg rolls, and the honey walnut prawns rice plate online in advance, arrived early, and waited as they prepared everything. It took 15 minutes (exactly as quoted). I later found that they forgot the rice that was supposed to go with the seafood rice plate I ordered... ummm, that's an important part of the order, even if not a pricey item. Too bad I was already home when I discovered that I only got the prawns a la carte. An honest mistake I'm sure, and I was able to make my own rice at home, so not a big deal. Though I do prefer to get what I paid for when visiting restaurants (or any business), so I think it's worth noting. I enjoyed my meal nonetheless. The prawns were super plump and not overloaded with sauce. And the egg rolls were full of tasty ingredients, and perfectly crisp on the outside, with the packaging clearly labeled to indicate which one was chicken vs veggie. Ok, so this isn't high end Chinese, but it's good. The prices are decent, and you receive huge amounts of food. I can make two to three meals out of their one item combo depending on how hungry I am. My favorite is their Chow Mein. When I was a kid we would always go to a local Chinese restaurant and they had the best, most flavorful Chow Mein. Since then, I haven't found anyplace that makes it as good. While their Chow Mein isn't as good as the place we used to go to, it's a close second. The noodles have a good chewiness to them, and the dish is flavorful. They are awesome cold too. So many places have really bland Chow Mein, but not Asia Express. I usually do the Mongolian Beef and Rice item on their menu, but I sub Chow Mein for the rice. The Mongolian Beef is pretty tasty. I like that they give you a lot of beef instead of a massive amount of veggies and barely any protein like other places. It has a good kick to it, and the meat is tender. There was only one time where the meat had a lot of gristle, but that seemed to be a one off sort of thing. Every other time I haven't even come across any gristle. I have also had the Honey Walnut prawns, which are tasty. They do have a huge amount of batter on them though, and they could use a little more sauce. Otherwise, the shrimp has always seemed fresh. No fishy smell, and they remove the black vein! I know you can eat the vein but it grosses me out. I find a lot of Chinese restaurants don't remove it, so that's a huge win in my book that they do. The pot stickers are ok. They could be a little more flavorful, and have a better meat to dumpling wrapper ratio. And the chicken egg roll is pretty good. It's sometimes a bit on the oily side, and it isn't always consistently good. All in all, if you want a large amount of Chinese food, at a decent price that is tasty, then this place fits the bill. Plus with their combos that they offer a single person can get Chinese food without breaking the bank, and having too many leftovers around. You will definitely have leftovers, but not like you would if you had to order each dish separately. Definitely give it a try. read more

This is one of my Go-To spots when I just want some solid Chinese food. Nothing fancy, super tasty and really quick. I LOVE the Egg Chow Fun. It's one of my favorites to order along with their Combination Fried rice. I like to get the sesame chicken (though it can be sweet) and the Mongolian chicken. Some things that I tend to stay away from because they have better items are the Cashew Chicken and the soups. But overall love the staff and the food.
