Crest Cafe has been around for a long time right next to the Crest Theatre in downtown Sacramento. It is a Mediterranean style counter service restaurant with patio seating along K Street and next to the theatre. There is no parking at the restaurant, so you will need to walk to get here. Light rail is right in front though. The menu includes a wide range of wraps and platters including several different proteins. During lunch, you can also get a decent buffet including drink for $10. On several visits, I opted for the buffet which has a small, but nice selection of fresh salad, hummus and pita, rice, and several rotating entrees. The restaurant interior is somewhat basic, but clean with lots of light from the large windows. The lunch line quickly wraps through the tables, so be prepared to invade the personal space of fellow diners while waiting. Location is key for the Crest Cafe. You are right in the middle of downtown, making them a quick stop before hitting the IMAX, Crest, or an number of bars along K Street. They do a brisk weekday lunch crowd for hungry office workers too. read more

I get the Mediterranean Bowl every time and it's absolutely the best! They use a creamy garlic yogurt sauce and some kind of green chili sauce I believe, and I recommend getting extra on the side. Service is quick and value for money is very good. read more

THIS PLACE WAS DELICIOUS!!! My friend and I were just aimlessly walking around downtown and saw this place. We had always wanted to try it because of the lunch specials ($4.99). We go in and even though it is a small family owned restaurant, the settings were very nice. The people were really nice and sweet as well as a regular customer who recommended the hummus pita vs a sampler (will get the sampler next!). My hummus came out in a good enough time (not too fast where it seemed like it was reheated and not too slow where you even start to wonder where your food is). My food was delicious especially with their spicy green sauce. I have not had much exposure to Mediterrean food so I didn't even know they had a spicy sauce. So that was really good. I put A LOT OF it on my dish since I'm asian and I love spicy :) My friend got the lamb gyro. SOOOO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ironically, I kind of swore off having lamb meat earlier in the day after I had a hot lamb sandwich at Cafe Rollie (french sandwich place). THAT one was $10 total with slices of lamb that weren't very tender. NOW MY FRIEND'S LAMB GYRO (ONLY $7.99) WAS SUPER TENDER, FLAVORFUL AND DELICIOUS! And it was REALLY big portions too. I've been here a few times. Twice with coworkers and a couple of times with hubby. I usually get a take-out buffet because I like to try a little bit of everything and depending on how hungry I am, and how much I manage to pile into the box, I usually have left overs for another meal. =) I like their samosas. My friend had a chicken dish with rice and some interesting looking side dish that had grape leaves or something wrapped around rice. Five-stars for a wonderful experience with crest catering. We had a lunch party at work and this was the perfect choice to make everyone happy. We had the tzatziki with pita, crest cafe salad, chicken kabob, eggplant with tomatoes and bell peppers, and basmati rice. Everything was DELICIOUS, right down to the two homemade salad dressings they brought. Crest staff delivered, helped set up, and came to pick up their serving items when we finished. A large variety of Mediterranean food including Mediterranean Nachos/ fries etc. It does not come off as super-authentic in my humble inexperienced opinion (thus, greek nachos) BUT who cares, it is delicious. The lamb is great and tender. I love the lamb gyro wrap. It is a weekly go-to for me. When I am feeling adventurous I enjoy the Med Nachos/ Fries. I think the only way to respond to a suggestion to dine at Crest is, "Yeah, that's fine." Crest is centrally located, close to the Capitol and many state Departments. It's very affordable, the food is pretty tasty, and a hugely popular meeting spot for lunch. I think one of the biggest draws for the group-lunch-crowd is the sheer variety of options. Vegetarian and Meatatarian, a buffet, small plates of appetizers/snacks, gyros and pitas, and full plates of heaping food. There are even greasy (read: delicious) Americanized options to please the junk food crowd, including Mediterranean Nachos and Feta Fries. There is sure to be something to please everyone! I am always content to go to Crest, but I can't rank it higher because I just don't LOVE it. The food is pretty good, but not great. This is from three visits. I first tired Crest three years ago. Even then I didn't like the food. I had a salad there and it was drowned in oil. I then went there a year later; a friend insisted on going to try the food, again I was disappointed. I got a shwarma, and it smelled rancid, I didn't even touch it. And the final and last time I will set foot into that horrible place was two weeks ago. I went to eat there before a movie at the Crest Theater. It was the worst Middle Eastern dinning experience I think I ever had. First off, I try to be polite and speak some of my limited Arabic with the waitress, no luck, she just glared at me. Then the three of us got dolmas, falafels, and a spanikopita for all of us to share. 1. The dolmas were from a can. I could taste it and I make them by had at home, I know they were from a can because they have a distinct citric acid flavor to it. 2. The falafels were raw inside. Thank god I did not take a bit out of it but cut it in half to share, the middle oozed out onto the plate. 3. The spanikopita was cold..I mean, the spinach just came out of the freezer and they put a lame filo top on it. It was obviously not baked. NO sorry I will never eat here again. read more

Not a fan. Food is relatively good, but I've experienced some of the worst customer service here. Two years ago, me and my friend wanted to grab a bite before we went to the French Film Festival. Understanding it was a busy day, we waited. A lady that had ordered after us wanted her order rushed because she was going to the same film we were going to, and thus they made hers first, which included the last pita that should have been used to make my meal, but instead was used for hers! We were so pissed for the wait and the horrible customer treatment that we requested a refund. Recently, we went there for lunch as an alternative to our usual spots. Well, I knew the dude was a new cashier. He had to look up the codes and pricing next to the register. He obviously had charged us an extra couple of dollars for a meal, when my friend wanted just the entree. When we asked him to review the receipt, he says that the extra charge was because of taxes and got all upset at us! Oh no he didn't, but yes he did! Wonderful, but it tastes more like Indian food than Mediterranean. Food: I've sampled Crest's offerings in two incarnations: 1) the lunch buffet and 2) the catered food trays. Anyway, that meal was so good that my colleagues and I ate or packaged all of it to take home. There was even some arguing over who would get what. Atmosphere: This place is right on K street near the Cathedral Square light rail station. They not only have a spacious interior for colder days, but also have a patio right next to the Crest Theater for warm weather. It's has a cafeteria feel, so there's no need for fancy garb. You might be sitting next to people who work in the capitol across the street, however. Service: Pretty gruff at the register, but it gets better from there. They'll grab your credit card and process your order pretty fast. I got the buffet, so there wasn't much they didn't need to actually serve me anything. Crest Cafe leaves me with a feeling of ambiguity. Their felafel plate is OK, but tends to be salty, so I downed my juice very quickly. Their food is mediocre, but I've had better Mediterranean food, even on Shattuck Avenue, the "Gourmet Ghetto" of Berkeley. It was only 1 in the afternoon, yet they didn't have coffee (despite it being a menu item).. and when it came to tea, you can get the tea bag... but it takes them awhile to get the cup of hot water(!!!) They had http://www.kqed.org on with woodworking shows... not exactly riveting viewing, but probably geared towards the Democrats attending the state convention who proudly donate to http://www.npr.org during Pledge Week. In my opinion, http://www.foodtv.com or http://www.bravotv.com would have made for more delicious viewing. Crest Cafe is in a grotty part of Sacramento. I absolutely love it!!! What's not to love? The owners are so nice, and the staff friendly. They can have trouble at times understanding your questions, and wondering why you are asking questions about the menu, but for cryin out loud, just eat it!! You will be so happy you did! The food is a mixture of Afghani, Indian and Medi. They have a buffet here throughout the week for lunch, and it's only like 10 bucks. That comes with a soda. And the buffet has all sorts of good stuff that varies. But usually, some spicy potatoes, moussaka, falafel, tzatziki, hummus, salad, chicken curry (the kind that is like yogurty), green beans with something tomato like and spicy, or perhaps okra, and kofte (meatballs). The food is all Hallal, which is like the Muslim(?) version of Kosher. The lamb gyros are so flavorful, the lamb meat seasoned perfectly and spinning on a rotisserie. They carve it off fresh, then throw it on top of lettuce and tomato, feta cheese all sitting on top of a pita or flat bread and topped with tzatiki. And BTW, gyro refers to lamb, not stuff in a pita, as Jack in the Box made so the term so popular. If you want chicken on a pita just ask for that. You may confuse who is working if you try to order a chicken gyro, since there is no such thing. For those of you too lazy to order at the counter, too bad. This is not sit-down and be waited on hand and foot place. The food may be a bit pricey, but the quality is the awesome!!! Nothing at all is frozen, minus the french fries and chicken strips. There is no alcohol served here, sadly. But bring your own and problem solved ;) Try the meditterean nachos too! And finish it all up with a sweet and tasty piece of home made baklava. read more

Came here due to a friend's glowing review. Man was I disappointed. Being Greek, I really expected more from this place. While I was braced for the insouciant, taciturn customer service, I was not at all ready for small portions of mediocre Mediterranean food being sold at exorbitant prices. I agree with the other reviewers (who obviously know Mediterranean food) who sadly wrote with much disappointment that THIS IS NOT the real deal, at ALL. The first shock came when I couldn't order what I came there for. I was one of the first customers of the day, yet they were already "out" of several items. Who opens their restaurant with signature dishes not being available? The second shock came when what I did order did not taste house made; for example, the dolmathes tasted like they were straight out of a can, and the shawarma was so store bought tasting and tough I simply couldn't believe it. Also, they charge extra for a little pittance of rice to be thrown on your plate - not cool when it's a dish that calls for rice to be served with it! There is no care put into this food, either in preparation or service - even the little bit of lamb gyro that was on my plate very dry and flavorless (guess I should have been glad the portion was surprisingly tiny) and the "tzatziki" sauce was incredibly watery and boring... where was the garlic? I nearly cried with bitter disappointment. Also, the wait was very long considering what came out on our plates (and considering the plethora of people working behind the counter). When my number was finally called, they tried to give me someone else's order. I explained what was being handed to me was not what I ordered and the lady (whom I believe was the owner, the way she was acting) actually argued with me, told me I was wrong, and demanded to see my receipt. When I showed her the receipt (which indeed had different food on it than what she was offering me), she didn't say a word; she actually seemed angry that she was the one who was incorrect, and she just thrust the proper food at me with a dismissive grunt. One of the plates I ordered was not served with all the items it was supposed to have, so I went back to the counter to get what the plate was missing. I was not surprised when they wanted to charge me for it. I calmly explained I'd already paid for it and I wasn't asking for something extra, but something that was MISSING. They finally saw I was correct, yet again I received my food with a cold attitude, like I had done something wrong. Because I was so excited about visiting here and yet ended up being so disappointed, writing this is actually making me so sad that I'm not going to go into any more detail about my visit. This place has the best Mediterranean food in Sacramento! Everything is fresh and delicious. The chicken shawarma was tender and full of flavor. I only tried it because they didn't have their yummy lentil soup this time (but I was glad they were out of the soup because it forced me to try something different). I also tried the spanokopita, which was not greasy like it can be some places, and the chicken sumac was also really tender (it was the first time I tried sumac, and I really liked it). The pita bread was fluffy and soft. Another friend tried the chicken kabob wrap and said it was really good. The tahini tastes really good, too. I wanted to like The Crest Cafe; convenient location for a movie watcher such as myself and how hard is it to get falafel right? But they just didn't cut the mustard, or the hummus. Now, they're back, with a new owner. I've been there several times,and while it sure isn't fine dining it's great for a quick satisfying bite. Friendly service, fresh greens, the unusual ability to cook an eggplant in a way that I find edible. Oh, and their lentil soup is a great start to your meal. Crest Cafe is a great place to go during your lunch hour if you work or live in downtown Sacramento. The staff is friendly and the food comes out fast. I usually always go for the lamb gyro or wrap. The wrap is more expensive, but it is a lot bigger. I can usually only eat half of the wrap. This place hits the spot if you want fast, satisfying Mediterranean food. Doesn't compare to eating gyros in Greece, but no place in the U.S. ever does. They have an outdoor patio that is nice when the weather is not too hot nor too cold. However, I recently had to get catering for a small office working lunch an was having a hard time finding anyone that catered to downtown for a small group that WASNT salad and sandwhiches. I've spent a fair bit of time in the middle east and loved the food. Folks always told me I should try Crest Cafe if I want the real deal here at home so I gave it a go. I've always had a thing for shawarmas (meat wrapped in flatbread with tahini sauce, tomatoes, onions, and other various topings) ...any type of grilled animal will do. Their menu had both traditional and non traditional items including kofte (Turkish meatballs I've rarely seen outside Turkey) and hamburgers. I was in a hurry so ordered a chicken shawarma to go figuring I couldn't go wrong. Well, no such luck. Something went terribly wrong. When I sat down to eat and opened the styrofoam box, what I found was not anything I've ever seen called a shawarma. It was a pile of lettuce with a couple pieces of tomato and a pile of chicken bits sitting in some salty grease. There was a little container of vinegar dressing and some hummus. The chicken was dry inside and incredibly salty...too bad because the spices were good but overpowered by the saltiness. The pool of grease was really unappetizing. The hummus was trying to hide its blandness with a load of salt. No tahini sauce, nothing wrapped in flatbread. Needless to say I was really disappointed. I asked a friend who eats there regularly about where I went wrong because I thought maybe they gave me the wrong order. He said no, that is their shawarma. Apparently if I wanted one that was more traditional (flatbread, tahini, etc), I had to ask for the Chicken Caesar Wrap! WTF?!?! The only way I'll be back is if I am forced to and then I think I'll go for the hamburger. Clearly if a place that touts itself as authentic Mediterranean food can't get a staple like that right then it is time to do some defensive ordering. Crest Cafe is a well-priced and tasty lunch spot conveniently located to the Capitol. No beer or wine, just delicious and healthy options at a reasonable price. The Crest Greek salad is my new go-to lunch: a generous heap of lettuce (romaine, not iceberg, thankyouverymuch), a few thinly sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, a sprinkling of feta cheese crumbles and a light and tangy vinaigrette. Add garlic chicken or gyro meat and your total is just under $11, which is pretty good for the neighborhood, and it's usually enough to send me into a minor food coma afterwards (um, no small feat for a mere salad!) Please note, I'm kind of a super salad snob, so finding a place with a housemade dressing that doesn't use mayo or corn syrup to thicken it = major happy salad dance. The garlic chicken is also well-seasoned and the portion is more than satisfying. The lamb gyro on their pillowy soft pita bread = a perfect meaty-crunchy-chewy lunch that won't bust your gut or your wallet. Crest Cafe has a nice combo of Mediterranean fare like dolmathes, falafel, and babaganoush, mixed in with some Americanized faves: if you're not in the mood to be healthy, the Mediterranean fries are seriously to die for, topped with gobs of feta cheese and smothered with creamy tzaziki dressing. Straight up hangover fare. In terms of how this place compares to the other Greek spot downtown: it doesn't have the hip factor, but I would argue that Crest's food is better than Petra (do NOT get me started on how shady I think it is to add fries to a gyro, that is just a ploy to give me less meat!) Crest's interior is more like a cafeteria space, roomy with tiled floors and fluorescent lighting, although on a temperate day the partially-shaded patio is a small slice of serenity next to the clamor of lightrail and K Street bums. It could maybe benefit from some sprucing up, but as long as the prices stay low I'm not complaining. read more

The salad had a bit too much oil on it for my liking but was tasty. The beef was a bit salty and could have been seasoned better. A bit tough too but not too bad. My Big Fat Greek Lunch was pretty damn good! The lunch buffet here is very well good enough to be served in the halls of Mount Olympus and cheap enough to be afforded by mere mortals. The buffet is a healthy fair, one that offers a week's worth of vegetable servings and being an eggplant fiend, I get my eggplant fix here often. The gyros may not qualify to be on Neptune's trident but the Caesar Salad certainly satisfies. I've had better Greek food, but I base my assessment on the location and quality of competition and in that regards...It's one of the best place to have lunch in the area. Came here during lunch because I was majorly craving Mediterranean food. I left disappointed. This is for a TOGO order. Walking in the restaurant, first impression was a cafeteria food vibe. I probably guessed right. I ordered the grilled chicken plate. It consisted of chicken breast marinated and placed on the grill, served with rice, salad, and pita bread. I ordered extra pita bread. I'm used to SF Mediterrean food, which is bomb. You get plenty of flavorful food for the price. The pita bread is to die for and they give you plenty to wrap your food with. Well ... this place ... for one the cashier wasn't that pleasant. I just moved, how was I suppose to know that each plate came with whatever? I didn't. No need to get mad at me because I didn't know that each plate came with a choice of no rice or rice. And your menu for one says it comes with rice, so I was just basing it off of that. For $13 I was suppose to get extra pita bread ... which I ordered and they FORGOT. By the time i got back to my office I had no extra pita bread ... and no utensils. :( The food lacks flavor. The chicken is marinated so blandly. And the rice is hard like it had been sitting there for a while. I was disappionted and sad that the Mediterranean food I was expecting was not up to par. Totally disappointed :/ man, I really had high hopes for this place. I came here today looking forward to trying the lunch buffet $10. We arrived around 12:30- Lunch hour....... so why did the buffet area look so dingy? And there was only one choice of meat offered. No problem, change of plans. While ordering, the lady messed up a few times so I had to keep repeating the order. She had to keep looking at the menu for prices or something and when she spoke, it was so low I could barely hear her. 2 transactions later, she finally got it right but I was already annoyed. And I was a bit confused on the pick up process. Are we supposed to pick up the food at the counter or do they bring it to you? Dolmathes $5- I didn't like it at all, the spices were overwhelming- not in a good way. I've had homemade ones that were 100 times better. Lamb Gyro $8- Eh, it was seasoned well but it didn't taste like lamb to me, more like sausage. Garlic Chicken Wrap $8- The chicken was on the plain, dry side but it came with a sauce so it made it better. *Great portions for the price. *Parking garage was $5 for an hour and half- one block away. So overall, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't good either. I really really wanted to like this place but I just don't see it happening. The food is fine. I mainly wanted to leave a review to warn yelpers about the hours not being accurate. I came here this evening a few minutes before 6 and they were closing. They let us in however, but they don't stay open until 7:00 as listed here on Yelp. Also, I don't recall any hours posted on their exterior windows, so I would suggest calling first to be sure. read more
