First, Crest Cafe is not the best nor is it the worst. Our server seemed annoyed that my human eating companion was having problems making up her mind as to what to eat. I think having patience is essential in this type of work especially when dealing with someone who is "mentally unstable." While my companion has not been officially diagnosed by a medical professional as being "mentally unstable," I do have my suspicions. As they say, it takes one to know one. While at the Crest (breakfast spot # 31), I overheard two other nearby tables ordering the "usual." I glanced over at one of the tables and saw all four people thumbing their phones to death. One of the worst restaurant dining experiences I have ever had. Got the Creme Brulee French Toast, waited a really long time, but finally got it. It was edible, but certainly not worth a price far in excess of what I'd pay for a standard French Toast from IHOP or Denny's or any other mediocre breakfast place. After I finished my food is when the real problems began. I asked for my bill. Waited 5 minutes. Asked for my bill again. Waited 5 more minutes. Got up and went to the hostess and asked for my bill. Waited 5 more minutes. Got pretty angry by that point, so I demanded my bill instead of asking nicely. I waited 5 more minutes (a total of 20 simply to GET the bill) and figured that they didn't care about me or my money. I slapped some money on the counter to avoid the bad karma of stealing food, but I certainly didn't leave enough to cover a tip. I NEVER LEARN!!! I hate myself for coming back to this place and I'm embarrassed I brought people this time. Came here for brunch after my wife and I got married (yay gay marriage) and we left very upset. My wife went off on our waitress which I have never seen her do. Basically, there was hair in one of our friend's sour cream and hair in another friend's sandwich. The waitress's solution? stare at us awkwardly, bring new sour cream, NO new sandwich, NO compensation. After complaining over such nonsense they decided to give us a few coupons for $5 off. Only one of them said that we couldn't use it at that moment but they wouldn't let us use them. It's not our fault your coupon wasn't specific enough. Since they wouldn't comp our hairy food my wife went off on the waitress letting her know how stupid it was that we couldn't use the coupons even though the coupons didn't actually say we couldn't, its ridiculous they wouldn't comp the hairy food which wasn't eaten, and we're never going back again. Sometimes after a great night of Pictionary all you crave is a Tuna Melt and a Grilled Cheese sandwich. Or at least that's how Lisa H. and I feel. Too bad this place fell way short of that. We walked in with a party of six and were barely welcomed. We go seated in ok timing considering the restaurant was dead, but it seemed like the waiter was cleaning table by table only when they were filled. He didn't want anything to do with our party from the moment we sat down. I understand that it was only him and the cook on duty, but you have to understand that the restaurant was not busy at all and he had to nerve to quiet our party down and tell us that two tables left because we were too noisy. Crest Cafe a Hillcrest institution could have gotten all 5 stars except for two things that hasn't changed in the past 5 years I have been in San Diego. I didn't like the waiter/maitre'd that showed us to our seats. First he seemed cranky and then motioned me to follow him to the table by waving his finger on the side below his waist. I think that odd since I know how to follow instructions and especially for such a small place. The second reason, Crest can never get a 5 star rating for me is the pews/benches are very uncomfortable. If I wanted to sit in Church I would attend one. But back to the service and food. The service was fairly good and attentive but for small details. I did not have salt and pepper on my table and I had to ask for water (I know water conservation and all but seriously, a glass of water please - even though I ordered coffee) I ordered the belgian waffle with the side of bacon and hash browns. My friend ordered an omelette. He was happy with his and ate all of it. As you can see from my other reviews, I don't like eating and talking because I end up talking more and eating less. I finished the nice crispy bacon and ate part of the hash browns, I tend to only finish the fried part on top. Of course the belgian waffle was a surprise, it came with cut bananas and nuts (no pun intended). It's a cute and cozy spot. I visited a couple weeks ago with my gf. The food was ok. Tasted a little old tbh. The scramble had a weird after taste. As my quest for the perfect breakfast joint continues, my journey last Thursday took a friend and I to Crest Cafe. While this place ranked fairly well among my fellow yelpers, I noticed a recurring theme...the bitchy ass service. Be it the dark haired hostess or the rude waiter, it seems the highly recommended food is often tainted by awful service. Knowing this, we were a bit hesistant. Call it luck, but we had awesome service. Quick and friendly, but not over the top. Efficient and attentive. No rude servers to speak of! Score! The food...it was excellent! We had the Ortega Omelette and the Creme Brulee French Toast. The omelette was tasty but not spicy despite the use of the word in it's description. It was served with hash browns, which were a little too well done for me, and a generous serving of toast. Then came the french toast....Amazing! One word...lots of impact. I was looking for a new place to try and take my mom to for brunch and heard about this place from my bro. This is also a spot that was on Guy Fieri's triple D so I thought "why not". When we got here, signed our name on the list for table and did not get any greeting whatsoever. There were plenty of waiters walking around and no peep until about 10 minutes of waiting. After another 10-15 minutes of waiting to finally get our table, we get seated near the restrooms. I could not stand the smell and had to turn my chair to TRY and avoid the smell. We got our menu's and some of them were a bit sticky (ew). They had some good options and the prices were ok. Just an FYI, I didn't see any kids menu. I decided to try the chicken and waffles cause I wanted something sweet & salty and a coffee. I'm quite picky with my coffee and their coffee was ok. When we first walked in the staff immediately greeted us and continued to be so helpful and friendly throughout our entire dinner. But the one thing that stood out to us the most was the food. The opened face sirloin was hands down the best steak I have ever had in my entire life. My husband agrees with me. It's the type of steak that will have you have dreams about it and crave it later. The crime brûlée was perfect and my husband loved his burger and the bread pudding. The restaurant was very clean and they were even accommodating to my 14 month old. Wow what a sweet, little, quirky hole in the wall place we found! The food was AMAZING. The Meat lover's omelette was one of the most flavorful omelettes I ate, served with real country style whole wheat bread. The Creme brûlée French toast out of this world and the lemon ricotta pancakes had actual natural lemon flavor that didn't overpower the whole pancake. I went there for the first time this morning, though I've driven past it a billion times in my life. I've always wanted to go in and since Jimmy Carter's was closed so early, this was a close and reasonable alternative. The ambiance is cute... kind of Art Deco meets Diner meets Gay Man's Living Room. I liked all the dog painting on the wall, the brightly colored Fiestaware, the funky lighting, the general vintage feel of the building... I *did* like the "please control your kids" sign on the door. I really hate it when parents are so tuned out to their kids that they just let them run amok or have learned to disconnect when their kids start screeching like little hellions. So that was a bonus. But... well, frankly, $30 is a bit steep for breakfast. And while the food was ok, a couple o' plates of eggs and bacon really don't warrant those kinda clams. I ordered the "Midwestern Madness". After my experience with Perry's Bacon Waffle, I had to try Crest's bacon pancakes with scrambled eggs. They had it right in theory... the bacon was crumbled into the batter and the pancakes were light and fluffy. The eggs were perfectly done and nice n' hot. So thumbs up there, but there was just something *missing* from the flavor profile. I can't say what it was exactly, but you know that magic combination that happens when you get waffle or pancke mixed with egg and syrup? That wasn't happening here, for some reason. It was good, but it just wasn't *great*, like you'd think it should be. It was also a bit too much food for 8am. 3 big-ass pancakes and at least a cup and a half of scrambled eggs. I ate all the eggs, but could only down one pancake. My friend ordered your garden-variety 2-egg breakfast with bacon, hashbrowns and toast. Here's the rub: It was $6.75 for the eggs, 'browns and toast... that's pretty average, but if he wanted bacon, it was like $2 more! Add tax and a beverage to that and you've just paid over $12 just for a 2-egg breakfast. It was tasty -- the hashbrowns and eggs were perfectly cooked, though the bacon was a bit overdone and the toast was bone dry. I could go at least 6 places and get that same breakfast for under $8. I also didn't really love the "extra fees" for everything. It seemed like they nickel n' dimed you just about everywhere. Split plate? That'll be extra. You must have a minimum order so I can't go in on a Saturday morning and just have coffee and toast, which seems kind of lame, if you ask me... no splitting checks, no more than 2 e-transactions... it's just all way too many rules for breakfast. The staff was lackluster, but that could have just been the time of day. They seemed nice enough, but weren't all that attentive, considering it was almost empty. The waiter didn't check on us until we were almost finished and my friend had to wait like 15 minutes to get another soda because no one would make eye contact with us. There was only one guy on staff when we came in (though another followed shortly) and while he was nice in that dry bitchy queen sort of way, a smile would have been a perk. Don't get me wrong, I loooooooove me a bitchy queen, but I prefer some banter with my bitch. This guy dished it out, but he didn't care to take it. Lighten up, Mary. All in all, I'd go there again, especially if friends wanted to go -- I wouldn't mind trying some of their other menu items. But I don't know that I'd make a special trip. Upon entering you'll noticed cramped space and a tacky retro diner theme going on. It left me unimpressed but I wasn't about to judge a book by its cover! It was sure busy when I went on a Saturday afternoon which is definitely a positive sign. I got the creme brulee French toast which was good but not anything extraordinary like I was floating on a dream cloud while I savored each bite. For breakfast and lunch here there is always a line, but weeknights you're golden. They're known for homestyle food with unique ingredients. The worst item we ordered was the albondigas soup. It was basically their stir fry mix with beef broth and a meatball. The chicken tortilla soup was mediocre. The fried mozzarella appetizer was PRIMO. A huge block of mozzarella fried... so gooey and chewy. Slurp. The burger had too much bread ratio. Their fries are like In N Out, so if you like that type, you will love theirs. The honey glazed pork chops were dry and didn't have enough sauce. Their taters are great if you like skin in yours. Their veggies are basically bell peppers and onions stir fried. The jalapeno chicken fried steak was hella good. Love love love this place! Came by randomly one night and enjoyed creme brulee french toast, bacon and home fries. Everything was amazing! That french toast, omg. Just get it. The home fries were great too with the peppers and onions in it. Perfect with ketchup and a bit of hot sauce. The bacon was great as well. Loved the food, the server was very helpful and sweet, the only thing was about 10:30, the music from the club next door was obnoxious. It shook the building. I've eaten at Crest several times over the last 20 years. I've never been impressed. It's like you often hear, you can either have good food or atmosphere but you can't have both. Well, I've always felt this place was cute but the food wasn't that great. It's certainly not memorable. Last weekend our group of 6 decided to meet here. When we arrived, the lobby was empty and the first 3 of us showed up together. The staff wouldn't seat us until our complete party had arrived. Now I think this is reasonable if there is a wait, but the place had open tables and no one else waiting. In the 20 minutes we waited, we could have been seated and spending money on mimosas. Instead we were forced to wait. Finally, the one waiter with common sense seated us despite not having a complete party. As a paying customer, I chose to use the free WiFi. After leaving I received a request to please provide feedback. So I did! I provided my honest feedback detailing our dissatisfaction with the seating policy as well as feedback about the mediocre quality of the food. But our waiter was GREAT! Instead of receiving a concerned response seeking further feedback or kindly addressing my concerns, I got an email with a nasty tone accusing me of using their free WiFi to provide "hurtful" feedback. The owner clearly can't handle constructive criticism. I definitely won't be back to this place until I see that ownership has changed. We came here since we saw it on DDD, the butter burger was good, tasty, juicy, packed with lots of cholesterol, the creme brulee fre nch toast was also good not great, the plain cheeseburger my daughter ordered, the beef had a certain smell and taste, we asked the cook and they said it was fresh beef but... my daughter did not eat it and we still had to pay for it.. My friend and I ended up coming to this place after we walked past it and saw the beautiful artwork right outside (a purple elephant?! Amazing and creative). Walking in, it was super busy and we weren't greeted right away but ended up standing there for at least five minutes not knowing whether to leave or just wait for someone to notice us. Now, I try not to be super picky because I'm pretty understanding when it comes to seeing a busy restaurant in full swing. After being noticed, we were seated right away, which was nice. Our waiter was alright, honestly nothing special or great customer service was given, that's why I've decided to give four stars to this place. I don't remember his name but he was just in an out way too quickly for us to even think he cared at all about us. It was also a little hard to understand him; luckily our order was right. I ordered the Creme Brûlée French Toast with a Caramel Vanilla Latte (which I thought I would get well before my food arrived but I did not) and my friend ordered the Macadamia & Caramelized Banana Belgian Waffle and the Almond Mocha (interesting taste because they use almond syrup), which the food was to die for. We loved it, it was delicious! And our coffee was amazing as well. This place is definitely a place to come back to because they have so many different food choices! We came for breakfast but I want to come back again for that, lunch and dinner! The atmosphere is cute, with a classy kind of feel of a diner but new age and hipster feeling at the same time.
