Wanted to try something different for Easter brunch and the dishes sounded good. Since everything has to be picked up or delivered, I was unsure if the food would arrive hot and as it should be/look like or if it'd be like other places where my food was just a mess of piled up food. The food is actually very good, but it is hard to believe how bad the service is, and how difficult it is, plus it's very difficult to park. Without going into a lot of detail, let's just say that I had a bad experience, and when I tried to let them know, it got even worse! There was absolutely no empathy. This will probably be the last time I ever go to this restaurant. Every time I come here, I always get such terrible service. I thought that it was just me, but now I see that it's not. It was a last minute decision, but the four of us ate lunch here today. Two ladies split the butter burger with fries. Two gals split the fish and chips. None of us liked the fries. The fish was wafer thin and covered in a hard, bumpy fried batter. One very small piece of lemon was provided and a small cup of tartar sauce. Just not enough to cover the very dry batter. OK...so my reviews keep disappearing from Yelp--- I guess people are pissed because I actually wrote a decent review and it seems there must be a troll at Yelp as stinky as blue cheese who hates Crest Cafe. OK, so I used to be a snotty waitress down the street at Corvette and I kind of like the abuse, but give the place a freakin' break! As for the couple with a crying baby who were asked to leave...HELLO? Are you kidding me with your whining? As a mom, the first thing I do is tell the hostess that I do NOT want to sit near any little kids. I work hard for my money and going out is a treat and I don't want my experience ruined by your precious/wailing child. I NEVER inflicted that type of pain on other diners when my children where young. We stayed home, I cooked, we were a family. Try it, you might like it. Now, for the food- it's good. French Toast, the hot chix salad and hey, the meatloaf is as good as Corvette's. The place is cozy and small...as I said in my PREVIOUS invisible reviews. Kind of like Paris. I have high standards--- I am stingy when it comes to handing out Yelp stars. I compare all my experiences --dining, art, events---etc here in San Diego to other locations (rural rural Connecticut--where I am from, New York, and Paris (where I have lived). I will not be overly generous, but keep in mind each star is very well merited. So---to get to Crest Cafe. I had delectable lemon and ricotta pancakes for brunch one morning. I love how the cafe serves late breakfast items even on the weekdays. I had taken a week off of work to host a visitor and we managed to brunch about every day here in San Diego. It was lovely to see the hot brunch spots during the week---we were amongst those who don't have to to work, those on vacation, and those retired---a pleasant crowd to be with since everyone is there for the sheer enjoyment of the moment. I do enjoy how Crest provides newspapers to peruse. I never find reading at breakfast to be rude or a faux pas in public. Breakfast can be informative, solace time-- (ahem New York Times time). The mimosas were just the way I like them---more bubbly than juice. I like that morning buzz feeling--soft and content. I want to make it back for the weekend specials---or the creme brulee French Toast---though the calmness of the place during midweek upped the overall satisfaction of the experience. That is the best way to sum it up---I left quite satisfied not WOWED like KAPOW that was SENSATIONAL, but with a smiling face. read more

Went here today for breakfast. Had the WORST service ever. Our server was frantic and not very helpful. He served us coffee and cream but didn't give us any utensils to stir the ceam in. He introduced himself to the table seated next to us and gave them a rundown of the specials...but we weren't fortunate enough to hear the specials?!?! He didn't check on us after our food was served. We had to ask for the coffee to be refilled and each time he came back to the table, he kept tipping the coffee cup and spilling it all over the saucer (no apology by the way). My experience with Crest Cafe has been you love it or you hate it - I have been quite fortunate to I love it. Out of the several times I've frequented this lively diner, I've only been disappointed once (ergo one less star, thanks to a rather incompetent waitress who I'm pretty certain is no longer with Crest Cafe). On my last visit to Crest Cafe, I had pneumonia and had not eaten a real meal in almost a week. My mother was visiting and wanted to go out to eat as she had been cooking chicken soup for two days so I recommended Crest Cafe. My mother is the only person I know with higher standards and more impatience for restaurants than myself - she's like the character Sally in "When Harry Met Sally"...she is high maintenance (a habit I duly learned) and I'm always reluctant to recommend restaurants to her for fear of retribution. After describing it as healthy comfort food, she agreed. To start, I enjoy the atmosphere of this joint - it successfully emulates a retro diner while combining a contemporary and often funky twist with the artwork. My mother agreed. Our waiter was undoubtedly friendly, patient, and earnest, putting up with all of my mother's questions and requests. When he discovered that the bread for our sandwiches was out (we were there at 2:00 PM) he put forth several alternatives. I ordered loose leaf tea which arrived in a timely matter, followed by our main courses. I had a special, the pulled pork orange achiote sandwich and it was filling yet and packed full of flavor. The alternative choice for bread, fried bread, was a better choice than the torta bread with it was supposed to be served. My mother loved her sandwich too and I ate her leftover half for breakfast the next day. Our bellies were rather full but we were so pleased with our meal thus far, we wanted to order dessert, even if we couldn't finish. I ordered chocolate croissant bread pudding and it was delightful while my mother was quite pleased with her apple turnover with Haagen Daz ice cream. That is another reason why I love this place - I'm allergic to corn and HG is one of three ice creams that I am able to eat so kudos for bourgeois ice cream. Our meal came to a close with a glowing comment card from us both. My mother walked away happy so using her as a barometer, you know it's good. read more

Well I want to say that I had the BEST salad today....the spinach with candied pecans and shrimp. Basil dressing was fresh, basil and I don't know what else..but good. The food seemed to be abundant, the salad pricey ($14) but without shrimp $8.95 and the service SUCKS!!! I will be back, because it was just that yummy. Anthony had a side of potatoes and two poached eggs, they were overdone but still good. The tea is Moto, which is also always good. It was packed and the server had attitude...wasn't listening, brought out the wrong salad and then when I brought it to his attention, acted like it was my fault he "heard me wrong." I'm a real stickler for first impressions. If you give me stink eye right from the getgo, I don't care really care what you do after....you're on my bad side. The Twin and I walked in around 7ish and it wasn't packed at all. A waitress was at the counter with her back turned to us and we politely stood waiting to be greeted and sat. We stayed there for an uncomfortable amount of time before saying hello 9 times. Mind you there were BELLS on the door, its not as if we're ninjas. The Twin went and sat herself...she's very independent. When I finally got the waitress' attention, I said, "Oh hi :) Do we seat ourselves or should we wait to be seated?" She responded in her Ice Queen voice, "Well you've ALREADY seated yourself....." Okay I was a server for most of my working career and I get it, that's annoying, your job is more often than not, annoying and as a direct result of all this annoyingness around you....you're well...annoyed. BUT I also aware you survive on tips and we just met, this is not how you want to start a relationship that's sure to last at least 45 minutes of your shift. At any rate, she was cold and rude for the rest of our time there...and if you've read any of my reviews you know that its more about the experience than anything for me. The food at this place is awesome...they have some great recipes. Unfortunately, their service is TERRIBLE!! Whether you are dining in or calling for delivery, the employees there are usually rude and make it seem as though you, the customer, are an inconvenience to them. I have received poor service so many times, that I now refuse to eat there, period. If you haven't tried this place, do yourself a favor. Don't! [UPDATE] Went back for more of that Chicken Tortilla soup that I loved. YUCK. The chicken was black this time and the amount of salt was unbearable. So happens that a female customer also had the same problem but was pretty vocal about it to the waiter. He argues with her that he had tasted it earlier and it was fine. She simply left she was so angered with this guy. These waiters talk about having to pay themselves if they comp a meal. Well folks, I'd have a conversation with the EDD on that one. I'm no lawyer, but employees can generally not be at financial risk. So it's either a lie or the owner is creating this attitude situation. Horrible service. Can I just leave my review at that? Horrible service, those are the two words that mainly describes this restaurant. I called in a to-go order and was told that it would be ready within 10 minutes. I walked into the Crest Cafe thinking that someone would ask me if I needed any help. Did anyone ask me? No. I literally stood there for 10 awkward minutes in the center of the restaurant waiting for a server to come up to me. I had to chase down a server and ask for my to-go order. Horrible. My second encounter with Crest Cafe I was calling for another to-go order, but I informed the worker that the prices listed online are different than the prices they have at the restaurant. He rudely told me to go on their website to write a comment. I told him that he should inform his manager of the price changes so he/she can change the website ASAP, and again he rudely told me to go on the website to write a complaint and added "did you want me to stay on the phone for this?" The Crest Cafe is a great alternative to fast food or Denny's late at night. A menu full of upscale American diner food, all the classics are here, and the portions are hearty. Salads, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, pork chops, meatloaf, pot pie, fried catfish. Makes you want to peek in the kitchen and see if your Grandma's in there. Their dinner salad includes avocado and mushrooms, two happy surprises. The inside of the cafe isn't much to look at, but they take to-go orders, and they're open till midnight, which is great if it takes you all night to decide what you want to eat. read more

I seem to hit the Crest Cafe primarily late at night, after the mid-range options have closed, but more importantly when a nascent hangover is crying for a staunch offset. The Crest Cafe's credo for comfort food makes it one of the better bets in Hillcrest. You'll be paying a bit more, but not unfairly. As you might guess, I've never tried breakfast here. The dinner entrees are decent, in the 3 to 3.5-star range. I like the fried chicken; others have delivered less. Where CC really hits their stride is in the sandwiches. I lean toward the hot options, but the cold are fine as well. If you need something substantial to counter the effects of booze, look no further than the turkey-brie, the cuban, or the pulled pork. Laden with cheese, pork, and/or avocado, they will either pull you off the ledge or make your morning all the brighter. Service is good and professional; parking the usual fifth-avenue crapshoot. read more

Just as MANY reviewers before me have stated, if you complain about anything, the server lays a guilt trip on you stating that "the owner makes us pay for anything we take off the check". Number 1, if this is true, I'm pretty sure it's illegal and I would recommend that the employees seek some relief at the California Labor Relations Board. Number 2, that describes a pretty sleazy owner - and I certainly don't want to add to the coffers of her cash register. wow what a scary first experience....thought this might be a good late nite place to eat....but after my first experience not sure if I want to come back. Pretty sure this place deserves five stars. Every time I've visited this place, consistent quality food and great service. Came here one morning dying of hunger after doing a fast for a blood test up the street. This place simply confuses me. They are trying to be so high end that they lose the diner feel altogether in my mind. The only thing diner-ish is the super greasy/buttery food! I wandered in here with my out-of-town family last month. We wanted something simply but wanted didn't feel like driving, so we tried Crest. I ordered the lightest thing I could find: the sandwich/salad/soup combo. My sandwich was loaded with butter, LOADED!! I just didn't expect my B.L.C.T to be a grilled cheese with bacon. I feel like the wording is misleading. I was expecting a BLT with a slice of cheese. The word play is on a BLT not a grilled cheese. I also dislike all the signs on the door. Apparently you cannot use your cell phone inside or bring in coffee. I would imagine most restaurants would agree, but who says it? They are just so pretentious. The only positive was that our server was nice and attentive. Overall, I am just not a fan of greasy food and will not be back. read more

My first visit, was after a long, stressful day. My fiance had been admitted to the UCSD hospital over in the hillcrest area. I hadn't really eaten anything all day, and was super stressed. It was after 930 or so, when I headed out to look for some food. I stopped by Wit's End, because I recalled they had food and figured they would be open. They were open, but the kitchen was closed. Mind you, my coping abilities at this point were nil, so I headed to the next open establishment I saw- the Crest Cafe. I head over, and the waiter immediately takes note of my ER tag, and asks "if everything is ok?" I was taken aback by this, because, like I said, I wasn't functioning well at this point, but once I put one and one together, I said "yeah". I ask if they have a grilled cheese and fries. The waiter informs they don't, but says he can have them make one up for me. This was nice, and the waiter certainly gets customer service. Well done. My second visit wasn't as nice. My wife and I went there for lunch, and while we were seated immediately, no one took order for about 15 mins. In fact we watched two other tables get sat, and order before us. The food was good. I was impressed with the Yucatan huevos (I think). Over a fried corn tortilla, black beans, chorizo and a fried egg are served. The dish is garnished pico de gallo and some avocado. This was really good for a place that doesn't specialize in Mexican fare. My wife got the club. It was aight. Nothing special. She ordered the side salad with the vinaigrette. The dressing was REALLY garlicky and neither of us could eat the salad as a result. In general, I thought their menu was a touch too expensive. Mostly because there didn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the pricing. Maybe I am old fashion, but a simple dish of eggs, potatoes and bacon should not be the same as more elaborate dishes with more expensive ingredients. so like most peeps who end up at the Crest Cafe, we started by wanting to go to the Hash House a Go-Go but the line was an hour and half long so we opted to find someone else. We were seated quickly w/no wait and promptly ordered...then we waited and waited and waited, while we watched people around us who were seated after us get their food -- even some who ordered the same thing as us. It seemed suspicous that after 35 mins we still hadn't gotten our breakfast order. FINALLY the waitress came over and said there'd been a "mix-up" in the kitchen. She didn't explain further but I'm guessing that means they gave our food to someone else. *sigh* I wasn't so much disappointed in the mix-up as I understand things happen BUT to wait 35 minutes to tell us this and not offer us some fruit or something to nibble on while we waited was ridiculous -- they also didn't take anything off the bill for the ridiculous wait which I think is just bad customer service. AS for the food itself, it was eh. I was super excited to try the Creme Brulee french toast which was okay but I didn't really tasted very much CB at all. The guy next to me (who prolly got my order) said the same thing. My bf got angus beef hash which he said was good but nothing to write home about. It had bell peppers in it though so I couldn't try as I'm allergic. I love hash and have never seen bp's in it so was disappointed w/that as well. First Review of the Year (can't believe it took me this long!). Crest Cafe: Healthy Comfort Food Umm, I think not. When you have an item called a 'Butta' Burger - a burger prepared with chunks of butter in it, I hardly think that's healthy. The entire menu consists of interesting twists on american (whatever that means) food, but healthy is definitely not one of its attributes. Wholesome might be a more appropriate description, since ingredients are fresh and are of a higher caliber than usual diner fare. Last time I went, it was late night, but the server was more than happy to see us (kudos to you tall waiter dude for not rolling your eyes at the prospect of staying a bit later than expected!). What we ordered: Isabella's Patties Cheese 'Butta' Squares Cobb Salad Crest Burger with veg patty substitute for my vegetarian compadre Assessment: Everything was delightfully delicious. Each dish had a surprising flavor, (it's diner food. I never expect too much, ya know?) and was prepared fresh, which explains the slight wait. I will say that the proportions are huge, which is good for those of you with insatiable appetites, but it seems a waste to me. Next time, I'll be sure to split my entrées. Our server was calm, gracious, and accommodating to our every need. This includes a great recommendation of which burger would be best with a veg patty. (30% tip for you, my friend!). Surprised at some of these low reviews. When I lived in Banker's Hill, I probably ate at Crest once a week. The breakfasts, IMO, are great. Love the "Hangover" Omelet which has their awesome chimichurri on it (haven't had anything like it elsewhere), as well as the french toasts when feeling like something sweet. Am not a big salad guy, but the salads here are awesome as well. The basil dressing is something I haven't found an equivalent of yet. I think the dinners wow me less, but I do like the grilled cheese with asparagus and turkey. The burgers are fine but not as great as the salads or breakfasts. The only thing about Crest is they're really pretty down on kids here. They even have a sign up (don't recall the verbiage on it exactly) discouraging you from bringing them. I have a 5 year old daughter now, so come to Crest a lot less than I used to. read more

Not terribly bad, but not terribly great. I had the machaca and Tony had some kind of omelet. Some of the ingredients were a little disappointing... the green chile appeared to have come from a can. I would have preferred shredded beef in the machaca, but it came with some kind of sirloin chunks, some of which were a little fatty. The price was ok because we had a 20% off coupon from Downtown Magazine. The building itself is nice, with attractive diner decor. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful, and didn't leave us wanting any coffee. If you are in the area and want a nice eggs-meat-potatoes breakfast, this is probably a good bet. But the menu has a lot of variety - maybe too much variety. I get the idea they do some things extremely well and other things just fall short. read more

As for the response to my review, it would have been appreciated if it hadn't been from the owner. She was the one who looked at us standing there, toddler in tow, and did not acknowledge us for quite some time. She cleaned tables and mumbled under her breath for a while before she even spoke to us. Mind you, this place is tiny, so we were clearly visible and there were open tables (surprise). Many servers passed us and one even asked us to move because we were in her way, but we were not greeted or felt welcomed by any of the staff. I've read the other reviews, and it seems that this is common practice. The fact that many other customers have pointed this out just makes the responses to all of these reviews redundant and unnecessary. I highly doubt the poor service will improve. read more

Crest Cafe is really decent brunch spot in Hillcrest. Astrid and I arrived mid-morning on Sunday before going out to try to find an ugly sweater for the Cosby Sweater Holiday Hootenanny. We originally tried to eat at La Vache, but after being seated there and having to endure the most God-awful Top 40 rock music in the world, we decided to bag out and head over to Crest. We were seated promptly and the place was buzzing. Servers running all over the place, bussers cleaning tables as fast as they could and patrons busily eating, talking and reading. Our server seemed a little lost or ambivalent and couldn't quite get it together. I ordered a side of home fries and two poached eggs. Astrid ordered the spinach salad with candied pecans, Gorgonzola and grilled shrimp. We also ordered an English Breakfast tea and a Blood Orange tea. The server seemed like he had just done a brick of speed with the line cooks because he took our order quickly and then left just as quickly. The tea was a little slow to arrive, but it was seriously GOOD. I saw later that Crest serves Moto tea...it makes sense. The food came out and my order was correct, but Astrid got a chicken salad instead of what she ordered. The server obviously was tweaking instead of listening, so back it went. While we waited I shared my eggs and potatoes with Astrid. The potatoes were good, but the egg yolks weren't runny, they were rock hard. I hate hard yolks, especially in poached eggs. The highlight was that salad though. It was incredible. Seriously incredible. A huge bowl full of spinach leaves, candied pecans, sauteed onions, Gorgonzola cheese and the most perfect shrimp ever butterflied, cooked and plated. It was all dressed with a fresh basil dressing that wasn't too oily or too mayonnaise-y. Awesome. Five stars for the salad. Minus one star for the eggs. Minus one star for the service. Comfortable family environment. We stopped here before we hit the road. My daughter got the kids mac and cheese it was a good portion for kids order super cheesy but a little bland. I ordered the Chili dog with the vegetarian chili on a pretzel bun, I personally thought it was amazing, the only bummer is my fries were cold. We ate here about a year ago and haven't been back although many people have recommended it to us. The food was okay- It felt very greasy to me when a lot of my friends raved about it's healthy vibe. But maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. The server was awful. As a past server, I am a total stickler on this. Went to Crest last night after the Interpol show. Another disappointment. My wife and I chose the salmon burger cuz it looked good. Fail! Everything needed seasoning(aka Salt, dude!). The salmon patties, the potato chips and the onion rings. But, even adding salt could not save the bland taste. On top of this, the onion rings were limp and greasy(your oil isn't hot enough!), and the chips had a burnt taste. The last time I went 6 years ago I was also disappointed.
