A tiny store with generously stuffed Argentine Malbec-Beef empanadas that live rent-free in my head. I've only had the pleasure of visiting twice back in Fall '25. Clean space, great atmosphere! I spotted 1-2 people in the front serving customers. Such warmth, I felt graciously welcomed and not rushed in the slightest as I browsed their menu before making my choices. This is a review for the Croillas stand in the Bryant park winter market. Ran across this stand while waiting for the dessert stand next to it. I never met an empanada i didnt like, so I decided to grab a few to take home for a little bite later one. It warmed up beautifully in the air fryer. The pastry was flaky. I got the spinach/asiago empanada and the fungi empanada. The spinach was super delish, very rich but i felt was overstuffed. I enjoy my empanadas w more crunch than the filling. Next was the mushroom. I was not a fan. The spices overpowered the genuine mushroom taste and i had to dump out most of the filling because it was simply just too much. I happened to be in Manhattan and once again decided to venture through the Turnstyle Underground Market by Columbus Circle. I aim to try all of the shops at this market and see what's good. I noticed this cute little empanada shop and decided to give it a shot. So glad that I did! I think I will come here for some delicious empanadas from now on :) The owners are so nice and have brought a charm of Argentina to NYC. Note that they are offering a lunch special where you can buy any 2 empanadas of your choice and any drink for a total of roughly $13. I opted for the most popular empanadas- the Argentine Malbec Beef Empanada and the Smoked Chicken Empanada. The empanadas were served piping hot and tasted so much like a homemade meal. Crispy and flaky dough with perfect amounts of filling. Their empanadas are baked, which I actually prefer compared to the fried ones, as they tend to be too oily for me. Hands down, one of the best empanadas I've ever had. I slightly preferred the beef to the chicken empanada, but both were really good. Looking forward to trying their desserts and coffee! I ordered takeout here from UberEats and I was overall very satisfied. I ordered the box of three with one chicken, one caprese, and one creamy corn. I liked the chicken and caprese, but I didn't quite enjoy the flavor of the creamy corn as much. The three empanadas came in a cute little box that protected them well during transit. There was also a slight quality issue with the creamy corn empanada. The empanada wasn't sealed and the flaky layers just fell apart like a croissant -- making it very difficult to eat without utensils, and got all over the place. I've posted a picture to compare the two empanadas. I only ordered here once and this only affected one of the three empanadas, so it may just be a one time thing. I ordered their lunch special off Seamless because I was randomly craving empanadas, but didn't want to go out full out unhealthy with the fried version (telling myself these baked ones are better for you...no one burst my bubble pls). Two empanadas of your choice plus a soup, it's a good size for a small lunch or mid-afternoon snack like I had it as, although I saved some of the soup for later. It came well packaged with the empanadas in a cute box, and the soup wrapped in cling film in case of leakage. The empanadas weren't super warm when I got them, but still flaky and crispy. I think I actually would've preferred them baked a little bit longer, as you can see from the pictures they were still quite light in color and not very toasted. I got one Spinach Asiago empanada and one Ham & Cheese, and ended up liking the spinach more. It was flavorful and creamy, but not overbearingly so. Would get this one again. The ham & cheese on the other hand was a little too rich for my taste, definitely more cheese than ham and felt like the filling of a quiche. I also wish the empanadas came with some sort of sauce on the side (I saw for some other Yelpers it did?), I think that would've added to the flavors. I have no complaints! The dough was super soft and not very greasy like some empanadas can be. The smoked chicken empanada was my absolute favorite! It was packed with flavor! The ground beef one was good, I probably wouldn't order it again because the chicken one stole the show! Our cashier was the most friendly & so helpful. He made the experience that much better because of his kind smile and conversation :) If you're walking through this market, I'd deff recommend stopping for one of these! A cute little empanada shop in the Turnstyle Underground Market that sells Argentinian-style baked empanadas, often in cute little boxes. Most of the empanadas I've had in my life have been fried, so the baked empanadas were a nice departure from that. The shell is fluffy and lightly crispy and the fillings I've tried so far have been pretty good. The Malbec Beef is probably my favorite. The Smoked Chicken and Ham & Cheese were both fine as well. Super friendly staff. The only (maybe) downside is the price which seems a bit high, even for New York standards, although I can't say for sure considering the economy these days. I stopped by Criollas while passing through the Turnstyle market. I figured I'd buy one to give it a try before heading home. I was not expecting to love it so much AND go back for three more! I'm glad I took a picture of the first one because the rest didn't stand a chance. Have you ever ate something and then ended up mad at yourself because it's all gone? That's how much I enjoyed every bite of these empanadas. The pricing is reasonable, considering the quality of the ingredients (about $4 but they offer a couple dollars off if you buy higher quantities.) I prefer the sizing of these empanadas, compared to some of the larger ones I've encountered elsewhere, for its rich flavor and baked (instead of fried) alternative. It's also less guilt involved since I happily ate three The beef was seasoned very well and the crust was buttery yet flaky/sturdy enough to hold the weight of the filling. The Chimichurri was made fresh and seems to sell out very fast! I was lucky to get one before the chef has to make more. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
