This place was an 'accidental find' for us as we travelled thru the Hartford area. The restaurant is Huge, the Menu is deep, alcohol beverages are served all day. There is literally something for everyone to nosh on! Our experience was outstanding from the Host who seated us to our friendly & knowledgeable Server staff. Every employee seemed to have a great attitude. As for the Food itself, it came to the table timely and was hot/cold appropriate as well as very tasty! The Yukon gold potatoes they make their Brekkie poTatoes with are seasoned perfectly by adding in a pinch of Paprika to create a smooth herb blend. Cromwell Diner is a great diner...food is consistent and fast, they always keep your water glass and coffee mug full. I couldn't go to the 5 star point because their prices are quite high for a diner. And they don't have common diner combos like pancakes with bacon, or sausage so it gets even more expensive if you start adding the sides on. We mostly go for breakfast. My personal favorites are the blueberry pancakes and the hash Benedict. We've gone for lunch or dinner a few times, burgers, chicken tenders and other sandwiches were good, and I love their curly fries. They always get the food right and it always tastes good. Great coffee & food!! Stopped today for breakfast & they have a terrific fall menu with specials as well as their standard menu. We tried a pumpkin/cream cheese muffin off the fall menu & is was amazing. For meals we had two different omelettes the mushroom/bacon/Swiss & the California. Growing up in the NYC area, when I hear the word "diner" this is the kind of place that I think of. You could drop the Cromwell Diner onto Route 17 or the Sunrise Highway and it would blend in seamlessly with any New Jersey or Long Island Diner. As if to prove this point by divine intervention, the last time we were here, we saw a huge delegation of the Long Island University ladies soccer team, coaches, and staff chowing down for breakfast. It's mammoth in size. It has a very comprehensive menu. And the food is very good. This has become our "go to" stop on the way to the New Haven train station, and that's why we stopped in for breakfast today. We were seated promptly and offered water and coffee before we could open up the menus. Service throughout our stay was top notch. Our party of three ordered an apple-cinnamon waffle, a chocolate chip waffle, and a variation on their Tex Mex (chorizo and jalapenos) omelette. Since I wanted that with egg-beaters and no cheese, our waiter suggested that it would be cheaper to order it as a "make Your Own". We checked the pricing, and of course he was right. This was a random visit. I was driving my family back to Philadelphia. We needed a break. We pulled off of 91 and spotted this place. I'm a diner guy so what the heck. Noticed a few things right away. It was crowded, but we got a seat quickly. It was well maintained inside. And everything I saw people eating looked really good. I asked the waitress for a recommendation. First thing she said was the Philly steak sandwich. Of course I mentioned that I'm from Philly and I have high standards. But I decided to give it a shot. Verdict: No it's not a real Philly cheesesteak. But it's a pretty good diner sandwich. Meat was tender and seasoned nicely. The roll was soft and fresh. I devoured it. I loved the option of getting tater tots. I do wish my sandwich was slightly bigger for $10.95. I was actually still hungry after eating it. But I'm a big guy. My son's chicken nuggets and fries also looked really good. They didn't give him a half-assed kids meal. I appreciate that as did he, because he polished it off. My wife liked her BLT, but she reported that there was too much L and not as much B. Three and a half to four stars is about right, depending on what you order. Being originally from this area in CT, I've never really liked this diner but when it's the closet meeting spot for breakfast when you're traveling here, there are not many options. There was always something I didn't like each time I went here which was rare but this time I ordered a build your own omelette just basic cheese and onion. I kid you not the onions were the size of nickels or larger and barely cooked! I ended up picking half of them out and putting them on the side of my plate. Why would you ever serve and omelette with onions like that inside?? Absolutely ridiculous and another reason to add why I don't like this diner. Oh, and they were all out of lemons like not one lemon to be had so no lemon for your water or tea and apparently based on other reviews they've been out of lemons for some time now. There are at least 4 grocery stores on the road they're on...I'm thinking have someone run out and grab a bag lol. I also ordered a takeout omelette meal for my daughter and a side of bacon to go with it. She said it was super dry and literally falling apart and tasted like fake bacon (the vegetarian type). The food is excellent. What turned us off, is that coffee was omitted from the bill by the waiter, and after paying and leaving, the owner came running after us to pay for the 2 coffees! Quite embarrassing as it made it look like we walked out without paying. He actually stood there in the cold wind and waited for money. He lost 3 customers with that move!! The diner seems nice enough. The waitress was friendly, the surroundings are comfortable... That being said, I went today for lunch and got a club sandwich. Although it looked like a child had sliced it, the sandwich was fine. All the while I'm eating though, I kept getting whiff of something rotten. It was like trash. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I picked up a French fry and that was it. They smelled really, really bad like someone had used rotten grease or something. I asked the waitress to smell them, and she admittedly and guardedly smell something. I was done at that point and asked for the check. I took my check up to the front. The cashier got the manager for me--he'd already heard (or smelled) about the fries. With not even looking at me, or acknowledging the issue, he took the meal cost off the bill and charged me for the soda that I got. Fair enough. But to not even apologize or acknowledge how horrible the fries were? Sheesh. I'm never returning. I wish I could convey the smell to you; it was gross. It's very rare that yelpers steer me wrong but C diner was a huge disappointment. The waitress never checked back on me. I had the fried cod It was so overcooked; hard as a rock. It came with two sides; I chose French fries because duh fish and chips. And based on a fellow yelper home fries(one who's opinion I usually agree with whole heartedly). Well these arrived burnt (see pic). Not enough condiments in the world could save these briquettes. Also when I moved the condiment rack I found crumbs that were not mine and sadly a live bug. When I think diner, I usually think a dinky IHOP or Denny's where the place is filled with truckers or post-prom teenagers. I would like to say there is nothing wrong with these two groups of people, but that is what I expect when I think "diner." Cromwell is different. Right off the bat when I walked in, I felt like I was walking into a neighbors home during their dinner as I saw several families coming in and out with their mom, dad, and 2.5 kids. Cromwell feels homey and cozy. A paradoxical feeling in such a good way considering how big the diner feels. The food portions themselves match up to this, as nothing coming out of the kitchen seemed to hold back in size. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and felt like I was being spoiled with the amount of chicken inside. The chicken tenders they used did not come out too crispy and dry, and the buffalo sauce was coated just to that pivotal point before the sandwich was a mess. It was delicious, but that might be biased considering I was distracted the time by how nice the waitress was. She reminded me of that aunt you visited that always insisted you have enough to eat and that you were being taken care of. Now if only certain chain diners could catch on to all of this... The interior and exterior seemed to have been remodeled, but the food is the worst I have ever had. Far from made from scratch items and service inconsistent, this is a diner perfect for the Kitchen Nightmares. We ordered breakfast and dinner items: Country Fried Steak came out a bit mushy and did not seem made from scratch, pancakes were flat despite the positive reviews. Gravy is horrible maybe also from a can? This restaurant seems to struggle with consistency. Turkey Dinner was pretty horrible as well. The mashed potatoes tasted like powdered potatoes and the turkey tasted horrible. When we told the server, he confirmed and told us we should have orders his suggestion, the Greek chicken. Additionally, we were seated by who we find out is the manager later on. We say " hi" when we walk in, but he doesn't say anything. He does not smile just proceeds to seat us. We inform him of some of the food mishaps when he responds, "Everyone loves the Country friend steak. No one says our food isn't good." read more

The food itself is about the same quality as other highly rated diners, but there are 2 things that make it distinct from most others diners I've been to. Most diners serve their eggs standard with homefries and toast, but in Cromwell you've got a whole bunch of other options without any upcharge. If you are looking for a healthy option you can choose something like grilled tomato or fresh vegetables. The other thing that really stands out about the Cromwell diner is the service provided by the staff. I have had a positive experience every visit, and one time when I forgot my leftovers on the table, the server actually ran outside and flagged me down! Overall great place to grab a bite. read more

I judge a diner by its coffee. I should have just sentenced this place to prison and moved on. My black coffee was either burned, left in the pot too long, or served in a mug that had previously held #2 pencils. The Challah French toast, 5 golden brown triangles, was lightly dusted with powdered sugar and presented with a small cup of whipped butter. If the toast were hot, the butter probably would have melted. It wasn't so it didn't. Enough said. The four strips of beautifully prepared, crispy bacon looked like they had come straight out of a picture in a magazine. They tasted like they had as well. Moving on... Remember the burned coffee? Apparently it was prepared by the same person in charge of burning the biscuits for the biscuits and gravy. Nice consistency in product, folks. Speaking of consistency, both the home fries and the sausage gravy, like that French toast, could have benefitted from some heat. Although adding sausage to the sausage gravy would have helped, too. Had our server stopped by to check at any time while we were eating, we'd have gladly shared our opinions, but she was nowhere to be found until we'd tabled our forks. read more

So spur of the moment my daughter and I decided on another short road trip to knock off 3 more states, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Traveling up 91 started to get some rumbling. Saw the sign, decided to give it a try. Walked in and was greeted and seated within 2 minutes. Menu was decent size with alot of breakfast options and well as lunch and dinner. I decided on the steak and cheese wedge with cheese fries. Very flavorful but when I picked it up all the insides fell out due to the moistness of the cheese. K Im becoming more strict with my reviews because I think no matter what the truth is the best bet, This diner was DELISH and i totally mean it but one of the most important parts about a restaurant, bar or wherever you go is the customer service, it was bland and to be honest I did get angry which is rare...I got eggs Benedict (my fav) my friend got it too but a different type and my other friend had a omelet with pancakes. I had a lemonade mimosa which was so freaking good! my friends had coffe and one had a regular mimosa. We were attended fast and food came out in great timing which is great but the waiter never came back until he gave us the check and he failed to mention we don't pay him we pay at the front so we stood there like dummies for like 15 minutes lol then when we went to pay we planned to pay separately but then the girl in front said no splitting checks on a Saturday which seeing 3 girls coming in at different times especially should probably been the first hint to mention that important part...She wasn't very nice about it and didn't want to make three separate checks either, I don't know how this works there but the staff should be a little more informative and friendly no matter the pressure customer service can make or break a place. read more

There menu reads all burgers are 100% 8 oz bugers. I ordered a chessebuger club sandwich it was made with 3 or 4 oz. Burger. I told the manager and he said this is how we make them. People that were seated after us recieved thier food, finally get mine but my husbands she said she'd be right back. She came back and walked right by to serve another table, I had checked the temp on my food. The eggs were cold and the Belgium waffle was soggy. She said she would take it back and actually blamed the kitchen staff for being backed up. Since my husband did not get his food yet we asked for the check for our drinks. The waitress had a nasty attitude at that point then came back and said oh you're all set. Wasted 45 mins of our time and will never return there! We were just driving through at supper time, saw the signs saying to exit 21 for the diner, read the Yelp reviews and decided to give it a go. We were glad we did. Service was quick and the food was good. Clam chowder was very creamy with a dash of dill and was one of the best I've had. The homemade corned beef hash with eggs Benedict, burger and omelet were excellent. The Yukon gold home fries was good but we enjoyed their regular fries even more. Chocolate chip pancake and French toast finished the deal. Both were good, the French toast maybe could've been soaked in the egg wash for a bit longer and couldve used a bit more cinnamon but overall it was solid. my Mom and I went to the diner yesterday. As we walk in we are greeted by a host, I guess, that always has a puss in his face. He proceeds to tell us at 7:30pm that they close shortly. They close at 8:00. We were going to order grilled cheese and soup. Pretty easy meal. It's not like they had to cook a pork chop or anything. The soup came out hot which is a switch. Usually it's like warm. The grilled cheese was something to be desired. The cheese wasn't even melted. How difficult is it to do a grilled cheese? The family behind us wanted ice cream. I have driven past Cromwell Diner a million times but never gone in. It always looks packed so I suggested to some friends to meet for breakfast this morning. We were about 5 minutes before our friends and they wouldn't sit us until they arrived which should have been the first warning sign because I really wanted to grab a cup of coffee while we were waiting. The service was slow, we asked multiple times for more coffee, water, a side of butter didn't receive. The food was not good, especially the corned beef hash which was just pulverized corned beef and a few onions. There are WAY better breakfast places in Berlin and Middletown which is a short drive away, next time we'll be going there. Boo Cromwell Diner! :( read more
