I go to this ACE hardware store for about 8 years now since it is a block away from our house, and always got great customer service, except for this last Thursday, 05/28. I went there to have some locks re-keyed, when I found someone to ask for help, this guy looks at me and first pretended he didn't see me and then I said "hi, excuse me", then he looked at me as if I was interrupting and bothering him and said "oh, do you need help?" So, I told him I had some locks to re-key and without even asking how many I had he just look at me and said: "yeah, but I don't have time right now". WHAT????? I was shocked about his answer and his face, like "I don't care". So, I kept standing in there and looking at him, so he said, "You can come back tomorrow or another day, but I'm the only one who knows how to re-key and I don't have time right now". When I found him in one of the aisle he was with another co-worker taking pictures of something... So, I asked him if I could at least show him what I had to make sure that they could do it. Then he looks at me and says "yeah, sure, how many do you have?" (The entire time he had a face clearing showing that I was bothering him!) He looked at the locks and said that they could do it, but he didn't have time. He said "I'm the manager here and I cannot be sitting inside an office re-keying locks, you can come tomorrow until 3pm that the other guy that knows how to do it, will be here" Then was when I found out that there was no one to complain to, since he was the manager. I get it that things happen and he couldn't do it at the time, but I would expect a better customer service and a better answer, specially coming from a manager, also, if there is only two people that knows how to re-key, so then put a sign mentioning the times where someone will be available. I was at the store on the Friday before to ask if they could do it, so if I knew that they had a specially time I would definitely had plan my schedule around it and not wasting my time going there. I end up taking to a local locksmith that was SO NICE, efficient and less expensive. I like to support local stores, and I know that ACE is more like a small chain store, comparing to home depot, but I still like to think them as a local store... I'll start going to Ganahl Lumber. Just very disappointed on how I was treated. read more

The last 3 times I have gone into this hardware store a young man named Ray has helped me. I wanted to tell the manager about it, but one of the cashiers told me that it would great if I could also go on yelp and post it there. I wish there were more people out there like Ray to help us out. read more

Just left this store with happiness to report I was helped by a older man, I believe his name was Jim. I walked up to him in the paint section as he was working away and asked him if he could please help me figure out what kind of battery was in my remote. He kindly opened it up told me which one it was and even changed it for me. Being a girl, it was nice to have him go the extra mile. Then I needed a fly trap and he walked me right over! I just wanted to express how impressed and thankful I am for the employees who work here. I had a huge emergency last week (Thursday March 20th) with my washing machine, I was doing a small load of laundry at 530 am to get a wash in before I finished packing for a trip I was going on that same day! I was scheduled to be picked up at 7:15 am to go to LAX.. Yes LAX. Well half way through the wash the hose busted!! and it was about 6am when I noticed. I'm sure you can imagine the panic I was going through. I had no idea what I was going to do. All I was thinking was Im supposed to be leaving in an hour and 15 minutes!!. With it being so early I thought great! Of course this happens today, I thought for sure I was going to miss my flight and have to call a 24 hour emergency plumber and spend $$$ just to change a hose. I literally was crying and thought 'omg what about ace'! With it being literally being across the street from me I was praying that this store would be open. Well I called the store and someone picked up and my heart just stopped and all I could do was yell out 'omg you guys are open!' ( thinking since they answered the phone that surely they had to be open). Well of course when I said that the person whom answered said no I'm sorry we don't open till 8:00am. At this point I had exactly an hour until my shuttle was coming to pick me up and I just started crying on the phone while I was explaining my situation. I know to some ppl this doesn't even seem like a big deal or that I was being dramatic but I was on my own and I'm a 25 year old woman and I was flying to meet my husband so I had no idea what to do since it was so early and I knew I needed a new hose. The water was busting out of the hose in all directions so of course I shut off the water immediately. I'm not super helpless and I do know how to do a few handy things so I knew all I needed was to replace the hose. (This obviously wouldn't have been that huge if I wasn't leaving for LAX in an hour and needed to finish my laundry). So with all the anxiety and stress I was facing about what I was going to and where was I going to be able to get a washer hose at 6:30 am!!!. The man on the phone was so unbelievably helpful,considerate and sympathetic to my situation. (Mind you I come to this ace all the time).. he asked me how far away I was to the store and I said not even a minute away, right as I said that he said alright come down right now and we will help you out. Omg my heart just about skipped a beat and I was speechless! I said no way r u sure and he said yes just hurry up get here. I thank I had said thank you about 10 times to him before I hung up. When I got there I was so happy and amazed that this was all happening that I left my lights and my car door open!. When I saw the man standing right by the door I just slammed my car into park mode and ran out and literally wanted to hug everyone there. Not only did they open hours early just to let me in to help me out but they even had all the hose sizes laying out on the counter ready for me to pick out when I got in. These employees who helped me out on march 20th were angels! I couldn't even wrap my head around the unexpected and unprecedented service that they were accommodating me with. I was more than thankful for these men, i feel forever grateful for everything they did for me that morning. I still can't believe the quality and care these employes had and what they did for me. I was In and out in 3 minutes. I rushed home and put on the new hose and just like that my morning went from a disaster to perfect all before 7 am. I couldn't thank them all enough, I am so impressed and just can't stop talking to my family about how amazing the employees at this ace are! The manage J.R Notery gave me his card and I swore and promised to him that I would not let this amount of service and deed go unnoticed. I can't not praise all those men enough for saving me and saving my trip from being ruined. Like I said I come to this ace all the time and I will no doubt be continuing to be a lifelong customer here. Ace truly is the place with the helpful hardware folks!! I have never left a review on Yelp before, but for the first time felt compelled to do so because of the outstanding customer service here. Last weekend I came in with an old TV stand we needed to use in our new house, yet we no longer had the screws to. I had struck out at 2 other hardware stores in town. A sales at Ace associate by the name of ROBERTO was fabulous and a LIFE SAVER! He spent a signficant amount of time looking through the massive nuts/bolt selection to help me find stuff that would work perfectly. And on top of that, he even drilled in some of the nails to be certain they would fit as he understood my concern regarding an expensive 55" TV. The customer service at this location cannot be beat, especially for somelike myself who can feel very overwhelmed and confused in the "Home Depots" of the world. read more

Horrible return policy. The sad thing about neighborhood hardware stores is they are just not a convenient as the Home Depots or Lowes. ACE cannot accept returns over $10.00 without receipt, even with credit card that was use for puchase a couple of days before. Why even have customers join rewards program. Must just be used to benefit their advertising. Shame, I spent $15-20,000 a year at HD and/or Lowes. Just can't use these local ACE-type shops anymore, except for small items. read more

I don't know if it's because I look young or don't necessarily "command respect" but no one here could help me. Furthermore when I asked for help, I got "looks" like they didn't have time for me and I had to repeatedly ask in order for them to get someone with a semblance of caring or helping. read more

Manager Marc was hostile and volitile with me. Came in for a simple purchase. Computer systems at Ace were slow and wonky. Took over 15 minutes to complete simple transaction. Manager Marc wanted me to wait around for an other 15 minutes to reprocess purchase. When I said don't worry about it. My time is valuable. I'll just go to Home Depot he began to belittle customer and became aggressive in his rhetoric. I live on Balboa Island. A small tight community nearby, I do a lot of construction. Word gets around fast. He made fun of that comment instead of saying - "Lets work on making you happy. Had he done that I would completed the purchase. But you could feel yhe backlash of animosity. I decided I made the right decision. You can bet I will be recomending time wasted at this Ace. It's better spent at Home Depot at this point . I do not understand what has happened to customer service especialy at this Ace, or the customer is always right in hardware stores. They should take lessons from the Ace on Tustin Ave in Santa Ana. A great manager would said, "Hey! I understand your time is valuable - let me give you a discount since you had to go through so much aggravation on your purchase and loss of personal time. Instead I got "please shop somewhere else" Manager Marc is a GREAT way to drive away future business. I for one will give the CDM Ace a try or just deal with the Costa Mesa Home Depot. It amazes me that most of the time, when I think I might have to go to Home Depot, Ace has what I need and saves me the trip. Ten minutes spent browsing the aisles will amaze you at the range of things they carry for your home. This store is small compared to a "Home Depot" but I end up finding what I want 90% of the time. The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. I end up buying a thing or 2 several times a month. This is so convenient to have this store in the neighborhood! read more

went in Ace for paint for the bathroom and was caught off guard by how friendly and competent the young lady was that helped me I believe her name was Kristy she got me everything I needed and escorted me up to the checkout were the cashier rang me up and had me on my way quickly and with a smile on my face a new experience for me in a hardware store I have since come back for other mostly household items and have got the same wonderful treatment each time to the point that I sought out the manager to thank him for the wonderful service and found out the reason the store is a good place to shop the manager's name was Mike Notary and he was very friendly chatting for a few moments about golf and my beloved California Angels I will be back at this store anytime I have any hardware needs thank you Mike and staff for breaking the mold of the surly hardware store experience read more

I have been coming to this store for years and it has always been a pleasure to shop there. I am always greeted right away and asked what I need help with. Even if I am just cruising around the store not looking for anything specifically I constantly get asked by every employee that walks by me if I need any help, talk about great service! Anyways this past week I purchased a Weber BBQ, I was helped by a young gal by the name of Christy. What was really nice was the fact she really helped me out she wasn't just trying to make a quick sale, she generally cared and asked a bunch of questions to see what BBQ would fit me best. I ended up going with the Spirit LP, I even got free assembly! I had it delivered to my house on Saturday afternoon and wasn't expecting much but a quick drop off but again these guys never cease to amaze me. The store manager JR who I've been helped by before delivered it personally in his truck with a real big young man I believe his name was Nelson I could be wrong though. They spent about 10 minutes showing me how to connect the propane tank and all the functions, gave me some grilling tips and how to properly take care of it. I really wish I had some steaks ready to grill along with a six pack to thank these guys for all their help. From the sale all the way up to the delivery it was nothing but a pleasure.
