Extremely rude and argumentative and entitled employees. This store has a lazy staff that is quick to give attitude the minute you "bother them". After standing and waiting for a few moments I had to interrupt a football conversation just to get the attention of two employees and their displeasure was quickly relayed to me. Hope greeted me at the door, she directed me to the exact isle where I might find what I was looking for. Then, she happened to come back to where I was in search of something for another customer. When I asked her where I could find another item, she stopped what she was doing and immediately took me there. Hope was so accommodating, it was like having a personal shopper! I am a big proponent of supporting small business owners. Went to purchase a Big Egg grill yesterday. The sales people were disinterested and gave me the impression they really did not want to work, let alone provide any customer service. Nonetheless I pressed on and was at the register to purchase it (over a $2000 sale). Despite the national ad campaign by ACE Hardware, this particular ACE location told me they would not set it up (after telling me they charged for delivery) because it was too heavy. So I took my business to the University Avenue ACE. Well now let me tell you that ACE hardware is 5 stars, customer service, delivery, set up....you get the picture. So if you want to support local business, I suggest going where they actually appreciate the customer. read more

ZERO * Very poor customer service. Staff never willing to help. I came here 3 times and this is the WORST customer service. I though maybe was a bad day but EVERYTIME the staff is rude and not willing to help you. Although the staff is free they would not come to cut chains when asked. No I cannot bring the chain box to the front. Condescending and now willing to help. BE AWARE they allow unleashed dogs roaming in store. It was scary having a 150 lbs German Shepherd roaming alone. What I love about Crown Ace Hardware is that I don't live too far away. So on a Saturday morning when I need a part for some household item that just broke, it's a quick drive to pick up a replacement. Now, the prices are higher than Home Depot or Lowe's, but the convenience is such that (1) I don't mind paying a little bit more , and (2) I can actually find the item I need fairly quickly and get out of there. Today, I needed a new GFI outlet. The old one was smelling bad, like burning electronics, and causing the circuit breaker to trip. The sales person was not particularly helpful, but at least I was able to figure out what I needed. I had a store credit from something I returned, so the cost was very affordable. I'm sure glad that Crown Ace Hardware is available to me. I don't have to fight the traffic, hike across a massive parking lot, or hunt through 10 acres of aisles just to find something I need. read more

This is a God sent of a store, it's got so many things (keys copied, paint, PVC piping..) down to the nuts and weird bolts you may need for your project car, hobby, whatever... The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. The nice thing also about this location which is a big PLUS is it's not too overly crowded like Home Depot and it's pretty hard to find someone at the Depot that isn't with someone or on another task. read more

Love this location!! The friendliest, most helpful staff work here. A plus for someone like me who is clueless when it comes to home improvement. The store is clean and organized. Covering all your needs from seasonal backyard items to custom keys, lighting, hardware, tools, paint, etc... I even needed an item they were sold out of in the store and they ordered it for me, which was great, especially considering a few other Aces around town did not go the extra step. sooo....i did it again. i cheated on home depot today. i didn't plan on it, i just needed more of the lovely benny moore paint swatches. but what do you know, they were having a 20% off EVERYTHING sale today (apparently it only happens like twice a year). so what can i say...im a bit 'easy' that way. the temptation of discounts is always too strong. good job ace, you sure know how to woo me with your sexy home repair items. but not only was i impressed with comparably priced items (plus 20% off), i was seriously impressed with the service there. i was approached by multiple employees asking if i needed help - and in turn, all my questions were answered and sexy home repair items located for the projects i had around the house for the day. one major shout out to a gentlemen named leon. after he initially helped me in lighting, he found me over at the cheap crap bins (i was curious and ALMOST woo'd...almost) and asked if i wanted a cart. i thanked him but declined...and he brought me one a few minutes later anyway. i started chatting with him about a few items i might need and he walked around the store with me to show me all this cool & practical stuff i might be interested in. i felt like i had a personal shopper! he was super sincere and knowledgeable...even turned me onto this solution that will prevent any water drops on my shower door. nice. it really will always come down to price and selection (no loyalties there, im afraid) but ill definitely be continuing to come over here. they got some good people. read more

One star for customer service! Bought the wrong size of valve handle, went 10 minutes later to exchange it. Cashier wouldn't credit full value on my purchase, and neither would the manager. Nothing was wrong with the returned handle. I will never shop there again! read more

The service and kindness I experienced today at this location restored my faith in humanity. I have an old dog with severe arthritis. In my wildest imagination, I couldn't have come up with the ideas Ricky had for my doggie door remodel. He picked out every nut and bolt and revamped my idea into something my dog absolutely loves and can actually use. It's aesthetically pleasing and completely functional, not to mention he saved me money. I've never had someone spend that amount of time and effort helping me in ANY store ever! I thought the small store charm was gone, but you can find it well and alive at Ace! I've always had the best service there, but today was off the charts. Thank you, Ricky. Kylie loves it! 2 Stars for having the product selection I needed and providing a coupon for signing up for their rewards. But, staff was not helpful or knowledgeable about killing the insect "scale" on plants. they looked at me like it wasn't a fairly common insect. One gentleman who tried to help just read the labels out loud to me which I had already read. Maybe it wasn't clear I was asking him for his opinion or seeking advice as to which brand or product to buy. After he wasn't any help I just bought two different kinds (which is what I was trying to avoid). As I went to check out I saw you could buy a container of ladybugs which eat scale naturally. By the time I got to the front and the cashier asked if i found everything alright I was honest that I struggled. I asked if I should buy some ladybugs for my scales. She said "snails." I said "scales, they are little round insects" She said "do you have an ace rewards account" and proceeded to check me out. After becoming a little unsatisfied with the level of service I asked about a return policy. She said "30 days if if it's not like open." The feeling I had leaving was not excitement to kill my garden pests but uncertainty. I hate to say this but Home Depot provides much better customer service. I usually leave there more knowledgeable and feeling confident. Plus, you can return a product if it doesn't work. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time they weren't polite either. Shoutout to HOPE!!! My friends and I watched a movie. Once it was over, we went to Harley's car and it did not want to start. We went over to Crown Ace Hardware (at 8:30pm) but it turns out, it closed at 8pm. A lady at the parking lot screamed out at us saying its been closed, then we asked her if she had jumper cables AND SHE HELPED US OUT JUMP START OUR CAR! This is a loooooong overdue review. The paint that was mixed for me with an ACE brand that looked nothing like the Benjamin Moore color I chose, was totally unsatisfactory. Well, they refused to do anything about it and actually accused me of altering the paint. What!?!? I tested a small patch on my wall and the paint read green and was supposed to be white. What would be my motivation for altering the paint? When the same thing happened to me another time at the ACE store in Carmel Valley, they were so nice and took the paint back. I'll NEVER shop the Claremont location again. Ever. read more

I come here for tools, parts, and supplies before going to Home Depot when doing small projects like installing a garbage disposal or building wood furniture. I've found better selection of things like screws, sand paper, safety glasses to wood stain than what the other giant chain stores have, often better prices too. But the staff here really make the difference. They seem to be a well coordinated team. If someone doesn't know the answer, they always know someone else who will. I really like their knowledge of things. They've got a good thing going on here and Ace Hardware better recognize that because it would be a shame if they lost some of these employees to all the work competition out there in the greater San Diego area. So listen up Ace Hardware, invest in your people, pay them more, improve their benefits. Maybe all of those things are already good and improving but if not, then don't be like all the other brick and mortars that are closing down. Invest in your people, keep the good ones there and people like me will keep coming back instead of going to Home Depot or Amazon. read more

I came here today and unfortunately I felt profiled. I was looking for paint and 2 employees that were male were in the paint area talking. I walked in and walked right to the paint area and neither one of them said hi or asked if we needed help. I'm there for a good 10 min and 6 people walked in and they said "Welcome to Ace can we help you" and they walked them to where they needed to go and they came back to the paint aisle, stood behind the counter and still didn't greet me. I was still standing there with no greeting and still didn't ask if I needed help. I turned to my friend and asked if this was really happening. Another 5 min or so goes by and I was going to leave but then finally the guy turns around and asks if we need something and then Abby shows up and he says she can help you. She went above and beyond to help me with the color and I was really appreciative. If it wasn't for Abby I probably wouldn't visit this store again. I will call ahead to make sure she's working because I really did love the color she helped me with. As life long residents in Clairemont and shopping The Clairemont Town Square we love our local Ace and think it's important to support local business. I would much rather shop at Ace than Home depot or Lowes. It surprisingly carries just about everything, kind of one stop shopping. One thing I always loved about Ace was that everyone one in the store was eager to help and were so friendly. So when I popped in to buy some spray paint I was shocked and so disappointed that the employee that helped me had the WORST customer service skills I have ever encountered. I was so shocked that I just kindly bought what was in had and left. I had asked the gentleman at the register for some assistance in the spray paint section as it's all locked and would need someone's help anyway. The employee flew around the corner and the first words out of his mouth was "hurry up" "hurry up or I'm going to be in trouble , I have leave". When I said I just need his expertise, he seemed exasperated. I kindly said , okay, thank you I think I will go to "plan B" I checked out and the gentleman asked if I got what I needed. I just said I didn't and didn't' want to be a complainer, but the customer service was horrible!! He did apologize and didn't seem to be too surprised. Wow, what a disappointment. It's easy to find someone to help you find things unlike at home depot. Plenty of free parking and located in a plaza with a bunch of other stores like starbucks.
