The Crabby dog is the best God damn thing I have ever eaten in my entire life. I would highly recommend everyone tries this place.

This is our new date spot for my daughter and I. We always stop in on library day. She gets the naked dog with fries every time but I've been going down the hot dog list to try each one. All have been great but the bacon cheese dog was a bit salty in my opinion. The fries are awesome hand cut and crispy. Just the way I love them! They need no accompaniment but you can get a side of gravy for $1 so why not? I'll eventually try the sandwiches but the dogs are so good. A friend and myself tried Crying Johnnies on Veterans Day Tuesday for lunch. Cute little establishment. Service was prompt as was the order coming out. I had a Chicago Dog and chili cheese fries. The fries were very good with ample toppings. The hot dog was a disappointment though. I think it was boiled in water and was only warm,not hot. Basically watery tasting too. Maybe if it were grilled or even deep fried it would have had some pizazz. I hear the sandwiches are very good, I will try them before making a decision whether to go back or not. read more

Firstly, did you know that this establishment has been on the show Carnival Eats?! In 2016 Cryin' Johnnies appeared on the shows episode entitled, "Hot Doggin." That's a pretty amazing feat, if you ask me. Cryin' Johnnies is a small family owned business tucked away in the heart of Mt. Airy, MD's downtown Main Street. If one conducts some research the building intimate hot dog joint is actually the original Mt. Airy firehouse. We love that the building has a bit of history to it. But more importantly, let's get to the review of the eats. Right!?! So! They serve all kinds of dogs (hence the name), sausages, burgers, soups, subs, sandwiches, a small selection of beer and wine for adults, as well as a mini food menu for the kids. What's the best dog you say?! Well, now that's a matter of opinion. Personally I'll drive from Wheaton, Md to Mt. Airy to grab takeout just for a taste of that crabby, buffalo chicken, mac n cheese or Chicago dog. Can you tell we've tried almost everything on the list!? What's so special about this hot dog place as opposed to it's larger compitition!? Let me list the ways: actual resturaunt, you can choose your own hot dog roll or type of hotdog(meat), you have a size choice of hotdog (8-12 inches), you have an option as to how your hotdog is cooked, various styles/toppings, and you also have the option of sausages. That's epic! As for the other items on the menu... Also delicious! Not to mention I think they are adding gyros to the mix. On a side note, there's not a Greek resturant in Mt. Airy. For what it is, a small beer and hot dog place, it does well. Got the pretzel bites, which were nice and soft (but probably not homemade). The Crabby Dog was a good MD signature dish. Been here twice in the last few weeks. I had a great meal and a great time on both visits! The staff was friendly even though they were pretty busy. I've had the fresh cut fries both visits and a foot long chilli dog and also, an Italian sausage. The rolls were steamed and nice n hot. The flavor of the chilli was good and married well with the dog. The bathrooms were clean. The crowd noise was manageable for such a small place. The restaurant was fairly crowded but, we didn't wait so long. Overall, I am happy to recommend this place to friends and family and have already done so. read more

Went here on a Friday night with our three kids and another family that had two kids. There was no wait, we were able to sit down right away. The other family needed a high chair, which ended up being a high table high chair, which was really great. Between our family we ordered... - Kids Mac-n-cheese (my son loved it, said it had a little kick to it) -kids hot dog (my other son liked it), -regular chili dog (my oldest son said the chili was really good...the perfect amount of onions and mustard) -the crabby dog and the cryin' johnnie (husband liked both of them but the cryin' johnnie was his favorite. This little Dine in restaurant has become my local favorite. The staff are extremely friendly and polite and their prices are great! I can't complain about anything on the menu. Their food is fresh from a local butcher and it makes all the difference compared to other food places around. Some of my personal favorites are the Sloppy dog, Classic Burger, Greek Gryo & Mac and cheese bites. worst experience ever! I went there Sunday 7/21 around 2:00 pm there were only 3 tables occupied and 3 waiters one was getting ready to leave her name was Mia or Maya. No one offered us to come in the young waiter came and clean the table did not said a word to us. A family came in they got waited on provided drinks meanwhile they did not offered to take our order. After 25 minutes, I told my husband let's leave they do not want to serve us here they do not need our money!!!. I will never go there ever again!! they should be in shame and I should had taken a video of this incident and reported to news. We took a little family trip out to see this part of Maryland and man are we ever glad we found this place! The kids loved the food so much they started crying! Not really but my son went through two hot dogs and our five yr old was thrilled at the generous offering of applesauce. My husband said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had and he would be an experto supremo. He used to work for USDA and grew up in cattle country. I had a bite and I am definitely ordering one next time. My Chicago dog had me smiling - it's one of my favorites. We'll surely make the drive and stop in again. I decided to write another review after reading the response to original review. First I'd like to say that I did not write that review after one visit to cryin johnnies. Must have hit on some truth given the extensive response to such a short review. With that being said I have tried three of the hotdogs there and was not thrilled. As to the scratch made comment: maybe I should have been more to the point, when I say scratch made food I mean everything. I noticed that it was stated that several of the items are scratch made. I would love to see cryin johnnies scratch make everything. Pickles, sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, mayo, cheese sauce, etc. the skies the limit. I am not an expert but I will say that when you see a restaurant on triple D or some other food network show there is one common denominator, they scratch make everything. That's what gives them a unique menu that no one else has. Which is what I originally said was something cryin johnnies is missing. I truly believe that cryin johnnies could be something that is jam packed constantly. If it was then I don't think that I would get such a long rebuttal to my review. Maybe the one star was harsh so ill up it to 2. lastly I don't think that you wanted a scene in your restaurant when you have customers there so I said that the food was good and paid my bill. Maybe I should have said that food was OK. The thing is the food is ok but I can get ok food anywhere. I would love to be able to get outstanding food that is no where else from cryin johnnies. p.s. I have had a burger there, quality of meat was great but the burger was not seasoned. Why? that seems like a no brainer. LOVE this place, it is one of the restaurants within walking distance to my house and my family and I go here quite often. This is my go to lunch restaurant when going out with friends as well. Great quality good tasting dogs. You either order at the counter or find a seat. The service didn't seem polished. We sat at a table after standing at the counter for awhile wondering what we were supposed to do. Then it took awhile to place our order. After eating the waitress didn't come back?? Accidentally stumbled onto this place while walking around historic Mt Airy. Loved the warmth and feeling of permanence that the interior delivered. Not like the sterile designs or fake hipster feel of most restaurants today. They serve good old fashion hot dogs. No designer or fusion dogs here (thank God). The waitress was pleasant and knew her menu. Placed my order for fries with gravy, chili dog and cold beer. Was so good I ordered the junkyard dog. Great place to relax and enjoy a meal. Delicious, fresh, affordable food. While I'm no hot dog connoisseur, theirs are truly fantastic and have given me a newfound appreciation. Large, flavorful and with a number of creative styles to order from, I've become a huge fan. Their namesake "Cryin' Johnnie" (my husband's favorite) comes with pepper jack cheese and diced jalapenos but if you're less of a spice seeker, like me, I recommend the chili cheese dog. I would be remiss if I didn't talk up their burgers, though, as they've got the best in Mount Airy, hands down. They probably owe a lot to their source -- Wagner's, right up Main Street -- but their preparation is always perfect. I'm the first to acknowledge that hot dogs are both incredibly cheap and easy to just make at home, but I've quickly become a fan.While a hot dog and burger joint might not necessarily appeal for a night out, the owners have created a fantastic space with bar-height tables, stone walls and large TVs (perfect for watching the game). Man I want to like this place...I really do, but it keeps disappointing me. The first time we went, the establishment had just opened, so we were forgiving to the fact that the buns were somewhat stale and the hot dogs tasted like cafeteria food. Everyone has a bad day, but last night we were craving hot dogs, so we thought we'd give it another shot! We both ordered the southern dog and I got a side of mac and cheese. The dogs were still pretty terrible. They tasted boiled like the kind you got in grade school. And as for the coleslaw...I think they bought coleslaw from the grocery store and tried to pass it off as homemade. It tasted, and looked, exactly like a brand my boyfriend bought at Safeway that ended up making us sick the next day. Also... I don't know what the heck was going on with the mac and cheese. The "mac" part was mushy and over-boiled and the "cheese" part had a distinct, odd, taste I couldn't put my finger on. I consider myself a seasoned veteran with mac n' cheese, but whatever was happening with this batch was bad. My biggest issue with the place is that it seems to cut corners while trying to sell the public on its authenticity. They have shirts on the wall, for sale, like the ones you would see at an iconic restaurant. The thing they fail to realize is restaurants that sell merchandise usually earn their reputation by setting themselves apart. They earn it by living up to their hype. Cryin' Johnnies is a shell of what it actually could be if they invested more time and money into quality ingredients instead of providing cheap, watered down versions of an otherwise wonderful menu.
