Mediocre family owned restaurant. My brother and I were in the area and decided to check it out. At first, we couldn't tell if it was open cause from the outside, the windows have that tinted look. When we first walked in, we were greeted and seated. It's definitely a dated restaurant, I felt like I was at a restaurant in Julian! My brother ordered sausage and cheese omelette, and I got corned beef hash with hash browns, and over medium eggs. I've read in a review that it you want your hash browns crispy, ask for well done in which I did! Service was okay, food came out in a timely manner. Eggs came out the way I requested, and same with the hash browns. Corned beef has was okay, nothing too special. Would I come back? Mm.. maybe not. We stopped in while waiting for our tires to be installed at Evans Tires (where Barry was awesome but that's for another review) on. Saturday early afternoon. It was a toss up between here and Swami's but this place had 1 more star and one less dollar sign. We walked in to the hole in the wall decor and were instantly excited because we're always looking for the mom and pop shops with delicious home cooking! He got the big biscuits and gravy and I got the Italiano omelet. His biscuit was so fluffy, it was a sheetpan style biscuit. The gravy was perfect. I enjoyed my unconventional omelet but preferred salsa so I got the marinara sauce on the side. Service was great. Very nice people! On my next cheat day we're coming back for pancakes! read more

Since Cully's is about five minutes away from our destination to Old Poway Park, it was the right choice to have a Sunday morning breakfast with family there. I ordered their "Chicken Fried Steak" ($9.95). Once I sliced through the crunchy coated beef, I noticed its two layers of meat inside, so it was thick enough to fulfill my craving. The thick white gravy on top tasted rich and slightly peppery. This tasty meal is served with eggs and I went with the hash browns. Also, you do have a choice between biscuits or toast. The "Veggie Omelet" ($9.95). If you're in for a hearty meal this is for you, Its bedded with grilled bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, avocado and cheese. The scramble eggs are soft and fluffy. I believe salsa is included with your order, which helps to give it an added flavor. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed with friendly service and I was happy that there was no wait prior to seating during peak time of breakfast. What I like here is the big platter portions of food, that we ended up with leftovers to go. This is a small diner type restaurant, with outdated decor and a good amount of seating. The menu is fairly simple, there's not an excessive amount of stuff to choose from. Took my friend and her daughter here randomly while having my car serviced down the road and she exclaimed "these pancakes are so fluffy I'm gonna diiiiiiiiie!!" 4 stars right there for the pancakes. Menu is simple, fare is reasonably priced and food is your typical, comfort breakfast food. Well prepared and hefty in size. Flavor was good, nothing mind blowing but you don't really need to mess with the basics in terms of seasoning. My friend and I shared bacon and eggs with some sort of country potatoes as well as some tasty pancakes that were fluffier than the norm according to the child that was with us. Décor is dated but it's part of the charm. You definitely get plenty of locals that the waiters/waitresses know by name. Cully's is everything you'd expect to find in Poway, "The City In The Country". An old-fashioned family restaurant with a small town feel, Cully's serves breakfast and lunch classics like omelets, pancakes, and burgers. The very friendly owner can usually be found sitting at one of the tables, catching up with regular customers who have frequented the establishment for decades. The menu isn't anything fancy. No $15 avocado toast, no "innovative, creative, hipster" whatever. Go to Fig Tree or Breakfast Republic for that. Over here, you'll get the traditional menu that has been served in breakfast diners since before I was born, probably. And when you stick to the basics and have at least an ounce of skill, you do it well. These are some of my favorite pancakes in the area, and most things on the menu in general are delicious. Is it "hip gourmet" that you're getting? Not particularly. But you aren't paying for that either; most dishes are within the ballpark of $9-11, as opposed to most brunch places that'll charge upshot of $15. Did I mention that for your very reasonable price tag you get a massive amount of food? Well, now I did. Portions are easily shareable for people who generally eat smaller portions, and even for "always orders a 3x3 at In-N-Out" me I'll take home some leftovers. For most entrees, you can choose a side of potatoes and also choose between a toast, biscuit, or pancake. I highly recommend the pancake. My go-to order is chicken fried steak with hash browns and a pancake on the side. I've also had their Benedict and their omelette and they're all solid options. I think there are other dishes I might have liked but I've been here so many times I've lost count. If you want a classic Poway experience, look no further than the hometown family restaurant tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, serving the same menu for decades on end. Enjoy paying a very low amount (these days) and getting more than what you pay for. And leave knowing you've supported one of the most local of local businesses in this trying time, instead of getting hotcakes at McDonald's yet again. read more

Here's where it really started to go south for me. My husband and I went to breakfast on Mothers Day. Why, I'm not sure! We don't have children, but nevertheless, off we went. The place was packed, but we were able to get a table for two. We waited a little longer than usual, because of the crowd and were ok with that. We finally placed our order and proceeded to wait for delivery of our meal. And wait! And wait! After two tables were seated after us, got their meals, I raised my hand and asked the waitress when we can expect our breakfast. She said soon and I said are you sure! After close to a 45 minute wait, our food arrives. At this point, you may be asking yourself why we waited so long. Because they have great food! And there are normally two young men as waiters, but they weren't in that day. Fast forward to today. We give it another go and it's just the female waitress again; same one as Mothers Day. Only today our wait was about 10 minutes to giver her our order and she looked upset about something. No smile, no hello, nothing! Where are the two young men? They were so friendly and approachable. Come back!!! Will we go back? Of course, but we'll hope every time that we don't have this woman as our waitress. read more

This is a great little hole in the wall restaurant. We come here weekly for lunch or breakfast depending as they close a little early. Everything and I mean everything we've ever gotten here has been fantastic and the customer service varies. You may end up waiting a bit if it's busy. They don't have a ton of staff so it can be a bit of a wait. The portions are huge and the quality is on point every time as well. Have you been looking for a really good breakfast place or even a really good lunch place? you just found it. Note to the owner. My wife is a ex waitress and she sees the potential to make $200 per waitress per morning rush. But to do that the current staff will need to increase their current pace by a lot. Completely horrible! We had breakfast at Cully's while visiting San Diego on vacation. It was busy and we had to wait about 10 minutes, which normally would be fine, but the owner(?) pretty much ignored everyone who was waiting until it was your turn to be seated. Once it was your turn, he'd just point you to a table. It's a small place (maybe 10 tables?), but there were people waiting the entire time we were there and only one waiter. The waiter acknowledged us only long enough to take our order and give us our bill. The food was average. My son had French toast. I had a French dip. My husband had a breakfast combo and the hash browns were cold and barely cooked. I'm not even sure how clean the restaurant is. I think they're going for a kitschy, 50s feel and failed. It's called Cully's Canine Cafe, which makes me think more of dog hair on the floor than 50s kitsch. No thanks. read more

Hubby and I had breakfast here the day after moving to the Rancho Bernardo area. Upon realizing that all we had in the fridge was Gatorade and leftover pizza from the night before, we decided to find a breakfast place. We were initially looking for a Denny's or other chain diner, but stumbled upon this place after dropping off our U-Haul right next door. It's located in a plaza, but on Sunday morn, all were still tucked away in their beds, so there was plenty of parking. Guess all the early birds were at Cully's though, because the place was packed. It's not a huge establishment; just a large room with wooden tables and chairs set up. The decor is very 80s, I wanna say, with wall paper. Didn't phase me though, the place was clean. We waited about 10 minutes after chatting with the owner, who was a very kind gentleman, and had the servers take us to our table. He let us know that his grand kids are the servers! A true family business, gotta love that. Menus were handed out coffee order taken. Coffee refilled often. As for the meal, I don't stray from my favorites much, so I ordered the short stack of pancakes with sausage. Hubby ordered the Italian sausage and potatoes and some eggs. The food came out within 10-15 minutes and was hot. My pancakes were fantastic, but it's pretty hard to mess up pancakes. Hubby's Italian sausage seemed rather undercooked to me, though he didn't say anything about it. The breakfast sausages that came with my order were thoroughly cooked, so I'm not sure why the Italian seemed a bit...raw... I'd love to come back and support this small family business, I'd just make sure to ask for the sausage to be well done. read more

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I ate breakfast here. I always trust my fellow Yelpers to lead me to good food and plentiful portions. I don't need a chain restaurant to tell me what's good, just some people with really good taste! Okay, to start off, it's just in a strip mall. It doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in the door, it still doesn't look like much. The place is small and has that 1980's country kitchen kind of feel to it, straight on down to the fake ivy. The tables and chairs are the same that I grew up on in my friends' kitchens, so you know the place is going to be legit. I ordered the farmer omlette. It was huge, and filled with delicious bacon, tomatoes, avocado, and cheese. It also came with a generous portion of hash browns, and a biscuit that looked like a huge slice of sheet cake. Everything tasted so great. I actually have enough leftovers for at least one more breakfast, if not two, so if you divide that almost $9 up, it's practically a steal! The service was great, although when there are only three tables taken on a Monday morning, you don't expect too much of a wait, but it's still important to say that the server was great! I don't find myself in Poway very often, let alone ever for breakfast, but if you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend trying this place out. It's some great down home food. PS: They also have burgers and sandwiches, but I didn't really check them out; I only wanted breakfast. So, I managed to find a restaurant Julie R. hasn't reviewed YET! heheh.. just kidding... she's awesome and her reviews are great! :) Anyways, I decided to go out for breakfast and I was looking for some place nearby and came across this place on Yelp so I decided to check it out. It's located along Poway Rd not too far from the movie theatre and in the same lot as O'Reilly's (formerly Kragen's). There is plenty of parking so no worries about that. The service was great and the staff was very friendly. I had coffee to start while I was looking over the menu. Throughout my time here, they kept my cup full to the brim... definitely a plus! I ordered a Denver omelette which is a 3-egg omelette with ham, onions, green peppers and cheese. The ham and onions were thickly cut which I actually like since it was easy to use a fork to pick up the ham when I couldn't anymore of the eggs. The order also included toast or biscuit. I went with wheat toast which came slightly buttered. I decided that I also wanted some pancakes so I ordered a short stack to go along with my omelette... They also serve burgers and sandwiches which I didn't really look over but I'll definitely come back and check what they have for lunch and dinner. Word of caution tho, this place only accepts cash. If you don't have cash, they do allow you to pay by debit (needless to say, you need to know your pin number) but they'll charge you a fee ($1.50 when I was here). Overall, I had a pretty good experience here. There's nothing too special about the food so if you're lookin for something that'll blow your taste buds out of the water, this might not be the place for you. If you like home-style cooked food with friendly service, give this place a shot... I'd give this place 3.5 stars because of the no-credit thing but because of the friendly service, I'm rounding up to 4 stars... read more

Awesome little mom and pop type of eatery in Poway. I stopped by Bellus Academy for a service and noticed this restaurant and was curious about it. So afterwards I stopped by and ordered some breakfast to go. The staff was so friendly when I came in, all smiles and jokes. Even the other customers too. The inside definitely looks like a blast from some country past (think country style wooden chairs and tables you'd see at grandma's house), but I dig it! I ordered the machaca plate and the corn beef hash plate. Paid with my debit card with no problems (I guess they only took cash in the past) and I was out the door in about 15 minutes with my food. Portions are pretty big. The machaca plate was delicious and full of shredded beef. Corn beef hash was okay, a little soggy... but I guess I prefer mine cooked a little more. The housemade salsa was delicious! Very fresh and a good amount of spice! Great with my machaca and tortilla. I want to come back and try some of their other stuff. Me and my family tried this place after reading the reviews and friends suggestions. We are new in town so we've been trying to find the local spots. I was so disappointed!! First of all our server was NOT wearing a mask! Neither was the older gentleman who may be the owner. It is a small restaurant and there was absolutely no social distancing at all. All the tables were literally a few feet apart. I actually found myself worried while I was eating about their sanitation practices. The food didn't even make up for it. It was less than mediocre. Some of them even know what a certain customer wants. I had the corned beef hash, eggs over medium, hash brown potatoes, and english muffins. Cooked to perfection and tasty. This is the first time I've been back here since I started Yelping, so this is my first review of this place, but I've been here for breakfast and lunch. They make an awesome chili size too. Nice big serving of chili smothered over a hamburger patty, served with cheese and onions. Nice hearty serving. I remember when they were located near the Poway Bowling Alley. I was in the area on a Sunday morning, and I always like to try a local restaurant. Pros: I got much more than I was expecting. I misread the menu, so I was surprised that my order of biscuits and gravy plus bacon ($9.95 as of 10 April 2022) ALSO included potatoes and eggs. I opted for what they called Potatoes O'Brian, which is potatoes with onions and green peppers. Not being a fan of peppers, I asked for just onions. They did not skimp on the onions, and they were cooked just how I like them. IMO, some of the potatoes were overcooked, but it did not detract from my eating all of them but one small piece that was overcooked. I like my biscuits and gravy. My standard will always be the long-closed Tyler's Taste of Texas. I am very picky. Cully's gravy wasn't *bad* but for me it's no great shakes, and it struck me as overly thick. But as lackluster as was their gravy, the biscuit was outstanding! I opted for scrambled eggs. I think they were on the griddle a bit too long, but I am picking nits. Bacon. I am ALL about the bacon. The two strips were just the way I asked for: crispy. They were a good length, and while they weren't particularly thick, they weren't paper thin like what most chains serve. Now for the Cons. Never. Ever. Make me get up and ask for a refill. It was all the more annoying because the staff (about four!) was gathered en masse and chattering away. This is a huge "thing" for me, and seeing the staff chattering away while my water glass is empty in their line of site was particularly annoying. Overall, my experience was positive. The food was adequate, and there a goodly amount of it. Should I find myself in the area again, I would consider coming back and trying one of their burgers. read more

I never even knew this place existed. The place is very, late 70's early 80's old school looking. Don't be afraid tho, once inside you will find the kindest people ever! They will welcome with open arms and make you feel like you are "home" and like family. They even have a "free books" bookshelf in the back by the restrooms. I thought she was the last person on earth who ate Liver and Onions. Anyway, I ordered the $8.65 Deluxe French Dip with french fries, a water and Diet Coke. My food arrived within 10 minutes and was ENORMOUS! I knew they were closing up so I paid my check just after my food arrived an asked for a "to go" box. Not even a morsel of my Deluxe French Dip made it into the "to go" box. It was delicious! I can't believe I ate the whole thing. The beef was super tender and the cheese gooey and delicious!
