Had brunch here yesterday on a Wednesday. Literally, middle of the week, and it was packed! Line out the door, but inside, it was surprisingly spacious...and LOUD. You order and pay up at the counter, they hand you a number stand, then hunt for a place to sit. There were groups of people hanging out and "brunching", while others were alone working in laptops. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to concentrate in there with all the noise. Anyhoo, I ordered the benedict, which came with a side of potatoes. Looked very appetizing! Unfortunately, I found everything to be on the salty side, especially the potatoes. My friend ordered their breakfast "burrito" filled with veggies and a protein of sorts (please look up the menu to find out what is inside). The burrito was more like a wrap, so not your typical burrito, but it was tasty! It came with a spicy sauce on the side and fruit. It didn't really need the sauce because the burrito was pretty flavorful; but if you wanted a extremely slight kick, add the sauce. I also took home a rolled Nutella pastry. It was very rich, flaky, and drizzling with Nutella. I ate it (only half) when I got home and I remembered the guy asking if I wanted it warmed up. I should have done that. Overall, it is a great place to meet up with friends and chat up a storm. Trust me, no one will hear your conversations. Would I come back? Sure. Although it is pretty far, I would probably try one of their drinks and something else on the menu, and maybe ask for no salt on the potatoes. read more

On my visit to Nutmeg, I had the opportunity to try their egg breakfast - a classic. I ordered the eggs over medium, which can be hard for some to get right - but they were perfectly done here, which impressed me! The bacon was also perfectly cooked. Sadly, other than those two items, the rest left me wanting a bit more. The breakfast potatoes were bland and could have used much more seasoning. They gave me a nice portion of them on my plate, but I didn't end up finishing them as they were a bit lacking. My added sausage patty was where they put all the salt as it was a bit over salted. And the Italian soda I had to wash everything down with lacked the sweetness it really should have had. I just found the food flavors to be unbalanced. read more

The girl who took our order acted like helping customers was a huge inconvenience. I politely asked, "Hi, how are you?" and she responded with, "I'm great, what would you like to order," in the coldest, most robotic tone possible. No smile. No thank you. No "how about you?" Two employees saw me standing there and couldn't be bothered to ask if I needed help. I found the forks myself and grabbed one. When I asked the same girl who took my order if the forks were clean, she responded with a rude tone: "Yeah, but just ask us next time so you don't reach over." But I had already called them to reserve table for 4 of us and someone on their end confirmed it. Nevertheless, they still accommodated us and told us the criteria for reservations. I ordered Omelette Florentine. I liked how it had a balance of couple eggs, couple slices of grilled sourdough, fried potatoes with tomatillo sauce and even fruits on the side. The Nutmeg Scramble had a unique combo of goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, which was flavorful if you're into that kind of thing. I came for brunch on Sunday with my friends and it was crowded so be prepared for a little bit of a wait. Parking was easy since it's in a big plaza. They have 2 separate rooms with plenty of small tables. I got the capri panini. It had chicken breast, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, pesto, and mozzarella. House Coffee ($4) was very good. My Chilaquiles ($15.50) with eggs were kinda average. I like my Chilaquiles wet and cheesy. The green sauce was more like salsa than the complex enchilada sauce consistency I was expecting, there wasn't much cheese and it wasn't super hot. I guess my fault ordering Mexican at a non-Mexican place. Nevertheless, this may be the best breakfast option in the area, so I recommend it and look forward to my next trip. First time stopping by, despite living in San Diego for over 20 years! Service was prompt, the employees were very polite, and the cafe itself had a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Next time, we'll have to dine in, but for this visit, there was one item in particular that I wanted to try ... Although I'm not allergic to gluten, their gluten free tiramisu cake caught my attention. They recently started offering this beauty, and I got to say, it is pretty tasty! The filling has that same tint, density, and smoothness as that found authentic tiramisu, and the cake layers are very light and airy, which, in my opinion, successfully replace the original dessert's use of lady fingers. Would I buy this again for $8? Yes, especially given that everything everywhere is just more expensive. Plus, the cake is tall, plump, well constructed, gluten free, and a great rendition of original tiramisu dessert. If I add one piece of feedback, the only thing I would add is more coffee soak to the cake layers. Maybe our piece was just missed due to being a end/side piece, but that was easily resolved by spooning on more of our own coffee. 5 stars = service, atmosphere, and ambiance 4.5 stars = tiramisu cake Therefore, 5 stars overall. Looking forward to coming back and trying some of their other offerings!
