Once inside, it was relatively small & rather dark. There was a cook & a lady taking orders. She was very friendly & helpful! I ordered the special for this day (2 topping calzone & drink.) Pros - Service- There was one guy making the food and taking orders and he was KILLING it! Smile on his face, working hard, and just doing an amazing job - Food- Our table ordered two calzones, a panini, two pizzas, breadsticks, and the Pickles app. All food was served hot and was yummy! Lots of topping and "filling" for pizza. - Pricing- The prices have gone up (from the prices listed on Yelp, but still aren't bad for what you get. - Atmosphere- Very cozy and comforting. Fun and laid back (also had amazing 90s music playing) Cons- -Parking- The only con I can see if the parking situation which can be a bit tricky depending on how many people are dining in. Overall a great experience for this cute and fun (hole-in-the-wall) that you won't be disappointed in.

Their soft serve ice cream is nothing short of amazing, and the fresh, cooked-to-order hamburgers are a perfect savory counterpart; the barbecue burger, in particular, is an absolute must-try. My wife raves about their frozen treats, expertly blending soft serve with cookie dough and M&M's. It's clear this place is a gem when both loyal locals and curious tourists consistently flock here. The building itself, an iconic fixture in Lafayette since the 1960s, holds a rich history as one of the area's first drive-ins, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to every delicious bite. Despite the consistently long wait of about 15 minutes, the efficient service, rated 8/10, keeps things moving, ensuring you get your treats swiftly. Parking is surprisingly easy, a huge plus for a popular spot. While the energetic atmosphere (9/10) is undeniable, it's worth noting that Budges doesn't cater specifically to young children, lacking highchairs and perhaps better suited for older kids or adults looking for a classic drive-in experience. I will be back!

But I was visiting West Lafayette, and it was morning, and I was feeling a little "under the weather," as my Polish grandmother would say when she went too hard on the Bud Lites the night before. So breakfast at Triple XXX it was, because I could walk there from the Purdue campus, and this restaurant is a West Lafayette institution. I got the Triple XXX Breakfast Special: two over-medium eggs, bacon, fried potatoes and wheat toast. And it was good, you know? It was simple and hearty. I especially liked the fried potatoes. But what really took it over the top is when my server, who was incredibly friendly, told me that she could bring me some root beer jelly to go along with my wheat toast. Record scratch. Say what, lady? Root beer jelly? Yes, Triple XXX makes their own root beer jelly, and they also sell it by the jar. (I bought a jar.) They are famous for their root beer, which is sold nationwide, so I guess it makes sense that they would also make root beer jelly. It tastes exactly the way you would think it would. It tastes like root beer! It's delicious. The seating at this restaurant is interesting: All of the seats are bar seats, and they face the middle of the kitchen. There were no tables or booths that I saw, unless you wanted to go outside and sit at one of the picnic tables on the patio. I liked this seating setup, because I could watch the action happen before my very eyes. The black coffee was very good. It better be, at a place like this! This is the kind of greasy spoon restaurant where old timers stay a while with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. (There were three such people doing something like that when I visited, as a matter of fact.) It's just a comfortable part of the West Lafayette community.

I ordered a double cheeseburger with just ketchup to taste the burger alone. My wife ordered the peanut butter burger, and we ordered curly fries to share. My burger was great, the flavor and quality of the fresh ground steak makes a big difference in the flavor being so good. My wife is a fan of the peanut butter on the burger, and we both like the bun used. We both got root beer, which is a step above all other root beers I have tasted, which also probably has to do with quality ingredients. I am a fan of Triple XXX, and so is my wife. We will be back to try out the other menu items and breakfast!

I went with the 5+5 which came with 5 fingers and 5 wings, toast, and fries. I enjoyed the fingers to most as they were tender and marinated well. The wings seemed to be a little overdone. I had them in Mango Habanero and it was more Mango than Habanero. The fries were good and crispy with good seasoning. The toast is laughable though. Do they just throw a piece of white bread on the grill back there and viola toast?! There are so many sauces and with this meal, you only got 2 choices. I added an extra sauce for 49 cents. I chose Slim's sauce, cayenne ranch, and spicy BBQ. I enjoyed the Spicy BBQ the most. The other 2 were good too. The Slim's is like no other sauce I've had before. It's like a very smooth tomato-pepper sauce. They had refreshingly sweet tea which is difficult to find in Indiana! They also had peach tea and raspberry tea. I would go eat Slim Chickens again. 2 stars. TL;DR -…read moreroot beer in frosted glass is divine; onion rings were delicious; service is lacking. We were intrigued by the root beer and loved the idea of enjoying it in a frosted mug, so we popped over for dinner. We ordered a myriad of things, all of which were eventually served in one giant paper tray with zero markings to identify what was what. And our root beers? Served in paper cups. When we asked about the frosted mugs, we were told they were about to close and had suspended tray service. However, the car that pulled in AFTER us received frosted mugs... and so did the folks seated at the picnic tables. So... huh? We flagged down a different carhop and asked why those patrons were still being served mugs. Again, we were told it was because they were about to close. But the sign clearly stated they closed at 10 PM, and both parties arrived after us and received mugs after we'd already been told service was suspended. Was this a case of dining while Black? In this current political climate, I honestly never know. I certainly pray that wasn't the case. The carhop apologized and didn't offer any additional excuses. She simply said she'd speak with the manager. Shortly thereafter, two frosted mugs appeared, filled with some of the creamiest root beer I've had in quite some time. I prayed over mine again because, listen... I worked in restaurants. I've seen crazy things. For the record, the hours posted on the menu board are incorrect. They actually close at 9 PM on Saturdays, not 10. And right at 9, the lights shut off completely. So if you plan to keep eating, you'll need to turn on your dome light like it's a tailgate party. The onion rings and root beer were genuinely enjoyable. The hot dogs, burgers, fries, and fried mushrooms were mid. Just... meh. Nothing to write home about. But what truly irritated me was the corn dog. Everybody knows the best part of a corn dog is that crispy little batter nugget near the stick. WHY would they scrape it off?!?!?! Who does that? Why would you intentionally remove the batter from the stick? I was absolutely appalled. Pffft! I'd return for the root beer or maybe a root beer float, but I'd strongly advise arriving before 8:30 PM if you actually want the full frosted mug experience.
