2 stars. TL;DR - root beer in frosted glass is divine; onion rings were delicious; service is lacking. We were intrigued by the root beer and loved the idea of enjoying it in a frosted mug, so we popped over for dinner. We ordered a myriad of things, all of which were eventually served in one giant paper tray with zero markings to identify what was what. And our root beers? Served in paper cups. When we asked about the frosted mugs, we were told they were about to close and had suspended tray service. However, the car that pulled in AFTER us received frosted mugs... and so did the folks seated at the picnic tables. So... huh? We flagged down a different carhop and asked why those patrons were still being served mugs. Again, we were told it was because they were about to close. But the sign clearly stated they closed at 10 PM, and both parties arrived after us and received mugs after we'd already been told service was suspended. Was this a case of dining while Black? In this current political climate, I honestly never know. I certainly pray that wasn't the case. The carhop apologized and didn't offer any additional excuses. She simply said she'd speak with the manager. Shortly thereafter, two frosted mugs appeared, filled with some of the creamiest root beer I've had in quite some time. I prayed over mine again because, listen... I worked in restaurants. I've seen crazy things. For the record, the hours posted on the menu board are incorrect. They actually close at 9 PM on Saturdays, not 10. And right at 9, the lights shut off completely. So if you plan to keep eating, you'll need to turn on your dome light like it's a tailgate party. The onion rings and root beer were genuinely enjoyable. The hot dogs, burgers, fries, and fried mushrooms were mid. Just... meh. Nothing to write home about. But what truly irritated me was the corn dog. Everybody knows the best part of a corn dog is that crispy little batter nugget near the stick. WHY would they scrape it off?!?!?! Who does that? Why would you intentionally remove the batter from the stick? I was absolutely appalled. Pffft! I'd return for the root beer or maybe a root beer float, but I'd strongly advise arriving before 8:30 PM if you actually want the full frosted mug experience. read more

We are huge fans of dog n suds! Everytime we come to West Lafayette we have to visit! It's the cutest most quaint establishment! Always has the most amazing food, quick service, and delicious root beer. You can order at a meter or drive in like a sonic! Has the cutest retro vibe that takes you back. Food is good but problem we have had 3 times in a row now is that the worker taking the orders, is going so fast trying to get orders in they do not listen well. Each time we have asked for a basket and never receive the fries. Then when asking they tell us we did not order a basket at all when really they did not put it in. Talk about hot dogs and yum! I have been meaning to come to Dog N Suds for way too long and after finally going this afternoon, I am happy to announce that it is worth going to. Similar to a Sonic, you have the option to drive up into a parking spot and order your meal and have it brought out to your car. This is not my favorite way to eat, but for those who enjoy that, Dog N Suds is the place for you in the Greater Lafayette area. If that doesn't strike your fancy, they have a little pavilion spot for you to sit and eat at if you'd prefer, which is what I will probably do in the future. The food is what you'd expect. It wasn't mind-blowing or anything, but it was enjoyable for what we wanting and expecting. The service was prompt too in ordering and coming to get your tray if you are eating from your car. Ugh. I don't understand the attraction of this place. The service is subpar and the food terrible. You either eat in your car or on their patio. You don't even have the option to order face-to-face with someone. If you're not ordering from your vehicle, you have to walk to the lone ordering station and scream into a fuzzy speaker. And of course they don't get your order right. We ordered a cheeseburger that came out with no cheese. The breaded mushrooms and fries are delicious, the pricing is inexpensive, and the portions are generous. I've had the hotdogs and they're okay - not anything amazing - but for the price you pay they're solid eats. The location is like a retro throwback drive in style. You pull up in your car next to a menu and press a button on it to order. It's a fun change of pace from your typical eateries. Especially on a nice 70 degree day. I've been wanting to actually go to a Dog-N-Suds drive in for awhile. I've drunk their bottled root beer a lot for a good portion of my life now and it's one of my favorites. So when we were visiting Lafayette, Indiana at Purdue for UC/Purdue game I saw we were close to one and we had to go try it. It's actually still an old school drive in. We pulled up, read the menu. Hit a button on the speaker, a girl took our order. Then she ran out on a tray, asked me to roll my window down a decent amount and stuck the tray with all our yummy food on it on my window. We ordered a Coney Dog basket and two super Root Beer Floats. Easily the best Root Beer Floats we've ever had. Big frosted mugs. Pure perfection. The Coney was super good too. I actually liked the chili on the Coney a lot. The crinkle fries that came with the basket were typical crinkle fries. They weren't bad at all they just...were crinkle fries. We flipped the switch on the speaker and the girl came back out and got our tray. Then we headed back to Cincy with some delicious food in our stomachs. Not bad considering the COVID rules. Food was quick, they got it right and gave us an extra sandwich (BONUS). We were disappointed we didn't get our frozen mug root beers and couldn't eat in our cars and had to leave. But we understand the precautions and are just thankful they were still serving food and the same quality we have grown to love! read more

My first driving experience ever was in the west suburbs of Illinois I was probably seven years old and was fantastic since then no root beer has never matched what dog and suds can provide. always five stars! I need to order it in the iced mug, so do not get it to go . Coney dogs are excellent, they have sort of a chili sauce flavor to them and can't be beat, burgers are good, hotdogs are good, this place is from the past and as I've stated many times I love old Americana how can you beat a drive in? In high school and a couple years of college I worked at Dog N Suds, I would still eat here every day if I could I think that says a lot since I worked here and would still eat here. Every time I go back to Lafayette I make sure I stop at Dog N Suds. You have to try a root beer in a mug, make sure to order a Large to get the mug. You can also get baby root beers in a mug too! I would suggest a foot long coney cheese dog, I like to add onions and mustard to mine. Their shrimp basket is delicious. I also enjoy the coney cheese burger. If you get fries or onion rings make sure you ask for the special sauce, it's a mix of mayo and mustard and is sweet and delicious! If you like ice cream you can't go wrong with a root beer float or a freeze, the only difference is they blend the root beer float for a freeze. I love Dog N Suds and will always be a fan! read more

My family lives close to this restaurant, so we decided to take a trip in and eat under the outside pavilion. It took 8 minutes from the time we pressed the button for orders to get someone to take our order which was not impressive. We got foot longs with coney sauce which were good, but the shrimp basket is nothing but frozen shrimp from Sam's club ( tasting) and then dumped in a basket with mediocre coleslaw. Good value for hot dogs, coneys, chicken strips, etc. Cons: Some menu items are disappointing even by the standards of cheap fast food. Breaded mushrooms should just be called breaded breading -- I would have no idea what it was supposed to be if I hadn't ordered it. The French fries are awful: soggy, flavorless food service crinkle cuts that may or may not be served at room temperature. This place is pretty cool. It's like a Sonic drive-in but better. For the longest time, they didn't accept credit cards so I didn't eat there that often. The hot dogs are pretty good and so are the sandwiches. However, the must get item is the root beer float. This thing was great. The root beer alone was pretty dang good, but adding their ice cream to it made it delicious. The prices are fairly reasonable and the service has always been good. Furthermore, I have never had an issue with any of the items I've ordered. There are few things from my childhood I remember as vividly as the Dog n Suds. To me, nothing about the place has changed. The coney dogs are my favorite, something that I've carried with me from childhood. The root beer is something I still can't get enough of; it has just the right amount of vanilla taste in it (although the diet does leave a funny aftertaste for some reason).
