I came here after a morning stroll to take a break from my normal coffee at home. I went through the reviews and there's a lot of good, and some not so good. The beauty about Yelp is you'd get to figure it out yourself too :) There was a bit of a line when I came here, which is always positive. If you look at the reviews, you can tell that this place has been around for a long time. Thats always an indicator that they're doing something right. The entry way has lots of tables and chairs and glass display cases of pastries and breads you can purchase. It's a good vibe. It reminds me of diedrichs coffee, if anyone can remember that place I went with the house coffee; Cumaica blend which was $3.25 for a large. Taste definitely surpassed Starbucks. read more

When I'm walking through the Excelsior, it's usually a toss-up for me to stop here or at Double Shot Coffee across the street (review: https://yelp.to/Yg6Kb0rJ-i). Both provide an ample supply of caffeine fixes and optional patio seating. However, if there was a Miss Personality portion to this contest, I'd have to give the rose to Double Shot. Instead this cafe focuses squarely on serving their core coffee. So when I'm in a no-nonsense mood, rather than succumbing to oversweetened flavorings, I tend to come here, order the $4.75 16-oz Cafe au Lait (Photo 9), and sit in their big red patio. An industrious pair of women run the shop, and their straightforward service matches their straightforward coffee. I'm sure I'll come back when I'm in the 'hood because I can get friendly smiles elsewhere. I've been a frequent customer of this café for quite some time after moving to the area. The staff has always been warm, welcoming, and accommodating. It was especially disappointing to witness the owner publicly reprimanding an employee during one of my visits. The employee handled the situation professionally despite being spoken to in a way that felt unnecessary and inappropriate in front of customers. It was an uncomfortable feeling witnessing that and I can see several people seemed taken back. It was extremely unprofessional, particularly coming from the owner. Some customers even said it wasn't the first time and that just sealed the deal for me to not want to come back and support . I hope the employees are doing well especially that woman read more

I've been a customer of this café for years and have always enjoyed coming here, which is why this experience was so disappointing. During a recent visit, I witnessed the owner publicly yelling at an employee while customers were standing in line. I don't know what the issue was, and I'm not here to comment on whether a mistake was made. What I do know is that it was incredibly uncomfortable to watch and clearly humiliating for the employee involved. The employee looked visibly upset, and the entire atmosphere in the café changed. Several customers around me seemed uncomfortable as well. Regardless of the situation, I don't believe any employee should be reprimanded in front of customers. Difficult conversations should be handled privately and professionally. As someone who has supported this business for years, it was disappointing to see a staff member treated that way. Especially this specific employee who has always made my experience here very welcoming! Employees are human beings who deserve respect, especially in their workplace. The service and vibe were super kind, I really enjoyed that aspect of Cumaica. The low rating comes from the actual Matcha Latte itself. It was extremely clumpy, every sip I took had clumps. So I decided to take it home to fix it but when I opened it at home the entire bottom of the cup had a giant clump in it and the color was muddy green. With a ton of coffee spots and eateries in my area all along Mission, sometimes it is overwhelming where to go to get a good quick breakfast and coffee all in one spot. I have been going to Cumaica since highschool (2008-2012, damn I'm getting old....ishh lol). Here they have a really good selection of coffee drinks and sizes, one of my favorites being the Mexican mocha iced. Along with the mex. mocha, I like to get the breakfast sandwich on the Jalapeno bagel that they have. The sandwich is made fresh right in front of you with egg, bacon (or a couple other meat options as well as no meat if you would like), tomato and lettuce. They have some really good yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit in it which I absolutely love. Tons of other goodies and baked goodies can be found and tried here. The service here gives you a home feeling and feels like family is serving you. Rumor has it that Cumaica is a chain from Martha Bros! They quietly changed the name so that "San Fran" locals wouldn't think it's a chain. True? Regardless, regulars walk in anyway thinking it's the old Martha Bros until they hold their togo cup and realize! Must be the expired whiskey from the night before!! This place is huge though. There was even a large sofa to plop your stuff with free wifi. They have a couple of tables outside so you can people watch to your heart's desire! I'll try to see how my dogs will like it the next time I'm around. Service here was standard. My cappuccino was nice and strong, though; I wished they could make "FLAT COFFEE!" I asked nicely if I can, get a different drink since the first one was watery and didn't look like a Caramel machiatto frappe. The lady in the register attitude, I was like well if you can't get me something else just throw it away and keep the money, and she was like OK and she threw it out. I was going to have my husband drink it, but she had already threw it out. So they made me a New one, this one was actually a frappe. On the way out the lady at the register was either getting a break or getting off of work. Big fan and supporter of local business but have to be honest that most of the times the employees here are not as professional. I've visited this place almost 4x per month and would go more but I just get turned off more everytime. Today was another notch of the list of not to continue. I havnt visted since March and hope all has been well with them during the pandemic. I decided to give them a try today. Strike #1 - As I approached their business, two of their employees were scrubbing their side walk with warm water and Clorox. To my surprise I thought what a great way to ensure cleanliness however regular people walking the street had to stop and their customers had to halt at their door exit until they were completely finished. Yes they have a job to do but at one point there was 12 people who were socially gathered. I'm thinking why not just let a few pass and continue? Strike #2 - After their employees finished cleaning their sidewalk I was able to step inside. Chairs and tables were no longer available but at least their patio was open. What I love about this place is their unique flavors. They introduced me to tuxedo mocha (black and white). As I placed my order, the lady gave me a strange WTF look and said, "white"? I politely corrected her and repeated my order. Again she looks lost and goes to her four other colleagues for help. They dont know either but one of them said "si". When I received my order, the lady shouts "white mocha!" smh MF Strike #3 - As I was waiting for my drink, I watched the two women from the outside come back in and put away the mop, bucket and clorox. They go to the side room and immediately (less than 3secs) go back to the work counter, talk to the customers in line and take their orders. WTF - NONE of them WASHED THEIR HANDS! Bagels, utility knife, coffee cups, lids, misc utensils and their toaster oven handle were touched by these two employees! Strike #4 - no designated area to separate customers 6ft apart. I watched as 6 individuals came into the shop, all acting like life is back to normal and all huddled together as they were awaiting a store to open for black friday. So if your in the neighborhood and feeling risky to catch COVID19 or food poisoning, CUMICA Excelsior is the place to visit! Dear Cumaica owners and managers, You are a local small business and I have always wanted you to succeed, after all you're right in front of a Peet's, but man you make it really hard to like you! As you enter, it is not clear where people should stand in line to order, is it by the counter? by the table? This confusion leads to awkward and unpleasant interactions between customers. After a couple of times of being yelled at for being in the wrong line, I decided to give some helpful suggestions to the staff. My advice was ignored as the ordering line situation is still a mess. Today was not good. I came in and there was no one at the register, only one person behind the counter making bagels. I understand and accept that there is a staffing shortage across the US and it's specially bad in pricey SF, so I patiently waited in line for someone to come out and take orders. After 5 minutes, and as the line behind me got longer with angry customers, I saw one of your staff come out of the bathroom. She gave us a look and she immediately ducked into the office. I thought she was going to sound the alarm about the deteriorating situation outside but nope, she never came out again. The only employee behind the counter kept her head buried in her bagels, no acknowledgment, nothing. After a few more minutes of being ignored I finally asked her if anyone was coming out to take orders. She gave me a sad look and said that she was the only one working because her co-worker was 'taking a break'. I decided to take my business elsewhere, many others left too. Dear Cumaica, the corporate coffee shop across the street does not need more business, YOU DO, here's a couple of suggestions: - Make it clear to customers who are ordering where to stand in line, tell the bewildered herd where to go! Floor stickers/arrows work wonders. - Train your employees, ALL of them, to not be terrified of speaking to customers. Have a situation? staffing shortage? Say something! A simple 'Hi we'll be right with you' is all that's needed. You'll be surprised how accepting customers can be when you communicate and acknowledge them. Good luck read more

went into this place since hk bakery across the street had their apple pay down. ordered medium coffee and corrisant. asked if i wanted sugar and cream and i said yes. when she hands me my coffee she put it on the counter. for some reason she didnt secure the lid so when i grabbed it, it spilled on my hand and the counter. burend the sh*t outta my hand. dont understand why you would just place the coffee lid on the cup and not secure it, especially since they put the sugar and cream in. all i got was an apology and they pured the coffee into a new cup. didnt offer a new cup of coffe or even to refill what was spilled! so instead of a medium i got a small and half coffee. rather support big business than this place, no cusotmer service what so ever read more

It's ok. I like their mocha and some of their pastries, but they need to work on their customer service. About half the time my orders are either forgotten or they get it wrong. One time they went through the motions of grilling my panini and I took it home and it was still cold. Frustrating. Also, when I remind them that they still haven't given me my coffee or some other order, they don't even say "Oh, sorry about that, lemme get that for you right now" They just ignore the fact that they've completely forgotten while I've been waiting, no acknowledgment of what just happened. This is not my favorite coffee place. To order, I had to call the baristas over both times I went up to the counter. They were more into their conversation than working. I'm not used to this at a coffee shop, where most baristas are very engaging, which is probably due to the fact they they are on a crap-ton of caffeine. My fiance and I both got bagel sandwiches, which were pretty good but kind of generic. The coffee was ok. I liked that they had a wide selection of coffees by the pound and the prices of everything are descent. But personally, I am not planning on going back here. There are so many little coffee shops in the area, so I will go to one of the others. Oh, and FYI: They don't allow refills on anything for a small fee like many coffee shops do. read more

Cumaica is by far my favorite coffee shop. I think it's way better then starbucks or Pete's or whatever the hell else there is out there. There are a bunch of sweet women that work there, who are consistently very nice and courteous- they remember your regular order after about three days- It's amazing how fast they are, and how good of service they give to you considering how packed they usualy are. The coffee is strong, but not overbearing, basically just great coffee. They have a wide variety of other food there as well from sandiwches to pastries, and breakfast burriots. . . I always get there bagels and cream cheese which they definitely don't go light on like a majority of the other coffee shops out there. I think I found the cafe that I will frequent to study in as my schoolwork gets more intense towards finals! I'm a Mocha Espresso freak. I just LOVE Mocha. And they made my Mocha espresso well!! The staff is also super friendly. As of right now, there is one person making the drinks but she doesn't seem stressed or anything which I like!! Very very friendly people! Me gusta! Really phenomenal coffee! This is a great place to go to in outer mission, with pleasant ambiance and outdoor seating, which is such a gem. I recommend the iced coffee. It was not watered down at all. I also got the almond croissant, which was not to die for, but still a pleasant food item. All in all, good crowd to bring a friend (I overheard two people talking about career advice and future plans). Nice spot for a coffee shop in the Excelsior District, there is always a seat available for the two times I've been here. I've come here 10 times, for sandwich or coffee. Been chill, mostly. But yesterday I went in at lunchtime and ordered a small coffee. The cashier charged me for a medium, a difference of 25 cents. Not a big deal, we all make mistakes, but still. So I try to get the girl's attention and she ignores me to my face and proceeds to have conversation with the 3 other young women coworkers. I couldn't believe it. I asked politely four times for some assistance and was ignored. Finally I guess the "manager" listened to me and gave me 25 cents back, begrudgingly. Then I remembered they did something similar to me about four months ago. Another drink, another overcharge, another case of ignoring the customer. I didn't say anything then because I thought I made a mistake, and didn't want a confrontation over something so small. So I'm avoiding this place. Formerly Martha's...I didn't review it when it was Marthas and I got sooo confused when I walked by it recently. It looks like Martha's...but is not. But still pretty good coffee. I like that it still feels like a neighborhood coffee shop. The Excelsior tends to have neighborhood coffee shops, and this doesn't disappoint. When I was deciding on my coffee, the barista spoke to a regular in his native language, and was very friendly to me when I came in. The coffee itself is pretty good. Not watered down, and very good. They have simple syrup for iced coffees, which I love. It makes it easier to sweeten iced drinks. I don't know why all coffee shops don't do this. Free wifi, which is always nice. I LOVE their open back patio, where I can just sit for a while and bask in the sun (on a sunny day), but have enough shade that it doesn't feel gross. read more

This coffee shop isn't too shabby. I liked it. It's located right on Mission street next to Ocean avenue next to the 49 & 14 bus lines. Now the coffee I had was the roast of the day and it was probably a medium roast. Not too strong in flavor, and nice amount of caffeine to go with it. The place was okay for me because it has all the essentials to serve customers, however, it wasn't great and the ambiance was so so. They had Christmas music turned on, but it was too low to hear. I'm just saying, if you intend to jump on the holiday band wagon and play this cheese-y stuff, turn it up a little so that it doesn't just sound like noise. Recently ordered: Iced vanilla latte w/ pumpkin slice loaf I was really surprised by how close this coffee spot was near where I was after I picked up a friend of mine to grab a cup of joe. The interior of this spot is really nice and seems relaxing. They also have a back balcony type deal going on with a wooden bench and a few chairs and tables. That is definitely a plus on a really nice day too. Selection was great and I was impressed. My vanilla latte was propertly sweetened and he pastry was pretty darn good. too.
