Excited! It's Saturday! It's my sisters birthday! I have my elderly parents, mother n law and my Husband & guess what!!!! We are going on a 2 hour road trip today! A road trip that we have been looking forward to & one that won't be easy on the older passengers in the car! 2 hours there & 2 hours back is a lot for them. Walked into a quaint little gift shop, walked over to the hostess stand to be seated & sat down. We could hear the waitresses talking about who would take the table, party of 6. We lost the lottery on that decision! Our waitress was a "bless your heart" kinda rude! Immediately told us that "she'd had better days", in her grumpiest voice. She put us in our place from the word go. Clearly the world is a different place, short handed and people are at the end of their ropes and on their last nerves. The warm and fuzzy mountain town fuzzy feels that we had anticipated was clearly not what we'd found. We were pleasant and kind from beginning to finish but oh boy! If my parents hadn't been with us I would have stood up and walked out without a 2nd thought. Truly disgusted and disappointed with the rude and disrespectful service we received today. We were intimidated and frankly scared to ask for anything at all! She pointed out that even though she could've added a tip to our bill BUT chose not to (doing us a favor). If I wasn't scared of being chased down as I was walking out with my family then I would not have left a single penny! What a bad experience! We just wanted to get out of town and have lunch in the mountain, laugh and have a great time! I'm not being mean, just saying that we didn't deserve that! I hope the world becomes a better place soon but in the meantime ..... don't be mean to what customers that you have. We found this on Yelp when looking for a breakfast spot near Sky Valley, GA. When you walk in, you actually walk into a gift shop full of cute merchandise for the home and more. You take a right and that leads you into the restaurant which was exactly how I would have envisioned a country style cafe. The service was quick and friendly. Prices were reasonable. When we got our food, the presentation didn't win us over. However, when we took our first bite, we fell in love. My husband had a stack of pancakes, sunny side up eggs, and sausage. He said the sausage was delicious. Actually, everything was! I ordered the chicken biscuit which was so amazing that I came back the next day for breakfast to have it again. Californian here visiting family in Franklin, NC decided to cross state lines for lunch after hiking up Pickens Nose Trail on the NC side. Food was plenty and equally delicious and our server was very kind. Worth the 5 stars then some. We'll definitely be back when visiting family. read more

I'm from Miami and I've been on the road with my mom - WHICH ITS HER BIRTHDAY BUY THE WAY - , my brother and my boyfriend heading to the smoky mountain. long story short, we saw this cute cafe and decide to dine in since we were STARVING! we had a lakes over to the host (Barbra) and she said the wait should be about 30 minutes. They had a bar behind her which was full so I asked her if we can sit there when we see an opening at the bar. Her exact words were "Sure, I would just have to clean it for you". We'll first id hope she would clean the otger groups dirt dishes - otherwise tgat eould be disgusting. Second she has attitude from the very beginning. I went ahead and put my name on the list - after spending money in there store waiting, I walked back to Barbra abs saw that the people on the bar had left. I asked her if it was okay for ys to sit there now snd her response now was " Sorry we are no longer seating anyone there" WHAT????? Wait WHATTTT??? We did not get to go to this establishment as they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and only open until 4pm at this moment - due to staffing issues. This place is one of the most amazing little spots to grab a bite... on earth! From walking in and being greeted by Deborah, who hasn't had a bad day since 197-something, to the warm welcome by the owner, Charlene- whom has been greeting us for years and years, it is always our trip highlight and treat to dine here. The place is well loved! They also have the most EXTRAORDINARY homemade desserts =). The icing on the cake though was being served by Debbie, the most amazing, personable, humble, hospitable, talented, warm, caring, attentive woman I have ever had the pleasure of meeting while we are on the road. We requested her every night, and each time we would go we felt like we were having dinner with family, which is such a comfort when you are on the road as much as we are and missing home. For the food... I love love the all you can eat boiled and fried shrimp, the salmon is absolutely out of this world, and the cheddar biscuits and salad bar are a must. Although I am a pescatarian, my friend says that the chicken pot pie, smothered chicken and most of their chicken dishes. All of the fish is solid too. Went last night for first time. We have a cabin nearby that we've had for over 4 years but we've never been there. We live Valley cafe but decided to give it a try based on someone in our neighborhood said it was great and has new owners. Hubby ordered chicken pot pie which server said was popular but diff than reg pot pie and would have puff pastry on top. Showed up in a bowl with 2 rolls because they were out of puff pastry. Looked like slop and I wish hubby had sent it back but he didn't. I ordered grilled trout and it was dry and had no flavor and was fishy so I sent that back. Daughter ordered ribs that were dry and not good either. They refunded me for trout but charged just for the sides. We arrived at 7:30 and they close at 8pm so that prob didn't help but all in all the food was bad, atmosphere wasn't great. Server was a young gal who was very nice. I would never go back and really regretted the whole experience and over $60 wasted. What a let down. I let the people who recommended this place know that it was really awful. What a let down. HUGE menu! Great service and a down home atmosphere that can't be beaten. We are locals, and everything that I've eaten here has been spectacular. Hamburger steak and onions is the best I've ever eaten! Broccoli casserole is incredible, and offered on certain days. Banana pudding is probably the best in the state of Georgia! On a recent retreat at the Dillard House, I dined at Cupboard Café twice. After battling traffic driving from Atlanta for nearly three hours, I arrived at Cupboard Café close to 8pm on a Friday evening. Although they close at 8:30, the hostess and server were very accommodating to our group and welcomed us enthusiastically. There were a total of 7 people in our party and they served us and honored all our requests quickly! For dinner, my girlfriend and I shared a fried chicken platter and also ordered a vegetable plate: creamed corn, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes of the day, and sliced tomatoes. After a long evening of driving, this meal hit the spot! Everything arrived at our table quickly and all the portions were much, much larger than we anticipated. We gave a valiant effort but weren't able to come close to finishing all of the food. The fried chicken was very delicious--crispy, juicy, and hot! The sides all tasted like something you're grandmother would make, and it's very clear Cupboard Café doesn't take any shortcuts when it comes to their food. We returned again for breakfast before heading back into town and I ordered the Chick a Dee hash with a biscuit and side of sausage gravy. This was an extremely heavy breakfast but tasty and filling. Again, the meal reminded me of everything that would come straight out of a southern grandmother's kitchen. I enjoyed both meals here and the service is phenomenal! We had two different servers on each visit but they were both very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. Cupboard Cafe is good food for market price. It's a very busy restaurant with a feel similar to Cracker Barrel, as there are jellies and nicknacks for purchase. This restaurant has a large capacity and still stays really busy during meal times, so expect a wait. They have a counter displaying their delicious desserts, so either avert your eyes... or save room for dessert. With the large portion sizes, consider sharing a meal, or taking home leftovers. read more

We headed to Valley Cafe around 11 and found out they stopped serving breakfast. The waitress recommended Cupboard Cafe as she used to work there and even recommended Crystal as our waitress. Super quaint place with a gift shop when you enter with all sorts of random items. You also can check out homemade fudge and jams on your way to the actual restaurant entrance. We couldn't resist buying some fudge and jam on our way out. I'm not entirely sure why Crystal was recommended. She was fine but certainly nothing notable of her service. I did try the country fried steak, which was alright. The house made biscuits were the best part. They even bring out cheddar versions upfront. It was good food, but nothing spectacular. read more

Service was very good. Our server was very kind and helpful with helping us decide what to get. Food was okay - nothing exceptional. The omelette was massive, as what my wife's Chick-a-dee hash, but was mostly onions and peppers as a filling for both, and not much meat. I got a side of potatoes and they were more boiled than browned and had an unusual taste to them. Kids had pancakes and sausage. As a guy that makes his own sausage, this was pretty good stuff. Prices were pretty high at over $40 for 2 adults and two small kids, but the place was always packed when we drove by, so I guess they aren't scaring away business. read more

I stopped in with my family after a wedding the night before and everything we ordered was delicious and perfectly cooked. I had the corned beef hash, country ham, biscuit and gravy, and fried okra,.... it was just like my grandma made it. This place it worth driving out of the way for and you will not be disappointed. There was a line out the door but it moved quickly. We decided to sit at the bar counter and the service was excellent, very quick and attentive staff. We stopped for lunch at Cupboard Cafe on the way home from Highlands, based on the good reviews, and we were not disappointed. Everyone agreed the cheese biscuits were delicious. The smothered steak and pecan crusted catfish were both hits, and the vegetables tasted fresh. One of our group said his yellow squash was good but not quite as good as his mama's, and another said his wife's mashed potatoes were a little better. The potato Pattie's were a tasty surprise -- they were a kind of seasoned potato pancake. The macaroni and cheese was slightly cold, but all in all, it was a good lunch, and our server, Cindy, was a sweet lady. The desserts looked fantastic, but we were too full to try them. A glorious restaurant! I've had breakfast , lunch and dinner here, and never been disappointed. Tonight I'm having the prime rib and it's extraordinary! This morning I had the Western Omelette, and it too was amazing! The sweet tea is also incredible, lots of flavor, it's the mountain water for sure. The service is polite and as good as any I've encountered anywhere. You'll leave here politely full and there's a nice country store adjoining it. This is a nice place, very close to black rock park. Five star for the neat environment and awesome service, four star for the food, five star for the not expensive price. I had the chicken fajita and shared the 16 piece chicken with my friends. The amount of the fajita is giant! It can feed 1.5 people. It's not that authentic but I happy to really love it. But the fried chicken isn't that good, to be honest, the flour is kinda too thick, and not that crispy. Also, you should definitely try the corn side!!! Their corn is the best ever!!! Only about half the patrons were wearing masks coming and going. After spending 4 days in the area and eating in Clayton and Highlands where staff and patrons were respectful of the science regarding COVID-19 safety protocols, I am disappointed in this North Georgia landmark. Food is decent but not something to write home about. Corn bread was extremely dry. Prices are fair though. I don't like the shared tables that they seat different parties at with one chair in between. That felt like a school cafeteria and we could hear the other parties entire loud conversation, as they were seated at our table. Waitresses arguing over who was serving who. Hostess had no idea what was going on. Leaving 4 stars because I know there is a labor shortage and it was crowded. Our waitress was nice but you could tell she was busy.
