The meat and three along with the vegetable only options are welcomed changes to the family style only meal for those desiring smaller portions. In our experience, the food was served hot and was perfectly prepared. We chose white meat chicken and received two large breast that were excellent! The two catfish fillets and four slices of meat loaf were delicious. The vegetables were Lima beans, cabbage casserole, creamed corn, potatoes au gratin, slaw and a spring salad. All were served fresh with two biscuits and two corn muffins. The relish, apple butter and Sogrum-sage butter were delightful. We were blessed to have April for our server, and highly recommend her for your visit. She shared the history of the area and is proud of the changes and history of the Dillard House. Thank you for a great meal. The fried chicken is better than I remembered. Yes, the restaurant is open, and parts of the motel are being remodeled/updated and the new hotel is under construction. Don't let the remodeling deter you from the eating at the restaurant or enjoying your favorite drink from the bar.

Say for 15 minutes before the manager had to obtain a server for our table. After the food was delivered, the server did not provide adequate service. I requested a water refill, which took an additional 15 minutes, because she continually forgot. Food quality wasn't the greatest. They served chicken, which consisted of 2 thighs and 2 drumsticks. Along with friend catfish filets, that had been way over salted. Both were very soggy. I ate half the thigh and quit. Veggies? Only vegetables were Lima beans, everything else considered vegetables, was a casserole. A table full of starches. Over rated and over priced. Sadly disappointed. If you want good southern food, go further south to Thomasville, GA. Go to O'Neals. You can fool some folks, but not someone that knows southern cooking. We won't return.

From the minute you walk in the doors, you can see this is a well run establishment. Spacious and clean, very inviting. We were greeted by Emily, who was just so wonderful - kind, engaging and informative - who took our order. Between the two of us, we were able to try several of the offerings. We ended up with a "2 Meat, 2 Side": Turkey & Pulled Pork with Sweet Potato Crunch and Collard Greens. My DH ordered the Beef Brisket with a Sausage (Cajun). His sides were the Pimento Cheese Grits and the Appalachian Beans. We also ordered the Pork Belly Bites, Buffalo coating with a side of Ranch. To top it all off, we each ordered a dessert to share and we went with the Banana Pudding and the Peach Cobbler. To break it down, everything was flavorful, fresh and delicious! We both agreed that everything was fabulous - truly enjoyable and we'd order it all again. Our favorites were the Beef Brisket, the Pork Belly Bites, the Collards, the Sweet Potato Crunch, the pimento Cheese Grits and the Cornbread with Honey Butter. As a matter of fact, we enjoyed the Cornbread so much that we ordered some to go home with us! Margaret is who helped us with this order, and she was as friendly and knowledgeable as Emily. Ultimately, we enjoyed our meal so much and found the service to be so exceptional that there is NO DOUBT that we will be back... Maybe Tomorrow!!!

The…read moreorganizer clearly hoped to cash in on the current Mahjong trend without offering one single element of an actual tournament. No table assignments. No scoring. No prizes. No auction items. Nothing. The only thing remotely "tournament‑like" was the fee they charged. And let's be clear: this wasn't even a fundraiser for a cause. It was "bring your own tiles, sit with your friends, play in our room, and we'll serve you a fair‑to‑mediocre lunch"--a lunch that, as the owner proudly announced, didn't even include a basic cookie for dessert. Stunning. Then came the final insult. My friend's mother, who couldn't attend, had spent two weeks calling and requesting a refund. Repeatedly denied and given the run around. Only after persistent pressure did they begrudgingly offer a food‑only gift certificate--not merchandise--though maybe, possibly, someday, at some undefined later date, they might let her use it in the store. Maybe. But not today. What on earth was this event. I genuinely felt like I had stepped into an alternate universe where professionalism, integrity, and basic hospitality had been outlawed.

Only problem we had was extremely slow service with the bar service. It took 10 mins for them to figure out where to sit us even with reservation. Our first drinks took 35 mins, second drink took another 25 mins to get. They were tasty when they did finally arrive. Everyone was super nice though. I do feel they should have comped drinks after that very long delay on both rounds. We ordered fried green tomatoes and they were not my favorite, too much corn meal and they were dry and hard to eat. My shrimp and grits were delicious and my husband fried chicken and Mac and cheese were great too. We ordered the ice cream for dessert it was good but nothing special and I would opt to try one of the full desserts next time. Overall such an adorable place and most of the food was really good. They just needed help with the bar service and maybe some more experienced wait staff they all were pretty young and green, but again very sweet.

The wait staff is excellent. They are open seven days a week for breakfast and for lunch until 3:30p. My bride had the western omelet and pronounced it excellent (a pretty rare rating from her). I'm a big fan of chicken livers and these are good - and more than one person can eat in a single sitting. The onion rings are "real" onion rings and the batter delicious. The place holds about 20-30 patrons so get there early. Net: Food very good, service excellent, ambiance very good, prices reasonable. Here's a link to their website: https://claytoncafe.com/

I noticed the window sign said "Angie's Clayton Cafe" and whilst being seated at 11:45AM on Tuesday June 2, 2026, noted the wall art had changed, no more local memorabilia, and the menu is now a well worn, two sheet pieces of copy paper. No problem, the place was nearing capacity per usual and we did get a window seated table. But, then I noticed, no collard greens on the menu. So, if you read my earlier reviews, you will note that I have eaten at quite a few "meat and three" style country diners and that I also know how to cook this food at home. That's a big qualifier, because Clayton Cafe had become a part of our destination trip to Clayton from Greenville, SC. It was just that good, a notch above the crowd. I didn't find this experience to be the same. The decor, service, ambiance was the same. Even the same crowd starting a 15 minute table wait shortly after noon. Business has not suffered, but the food is not the same. Overall, everything was less flavorful, more bland. The highlight, the white sawmill gravy was piping hot and flowed well, not a gloopy mess and I like that it was served on the side. The country fried steak was tender, but it had less crunch on the crust and was significantly bland - pepper and salt please. The green beans had a small chunk of meat involved, but they too were very bland and lacked a depth of flavor expected from the hamhock, the biscuit was good, but not the buttery crusty biscuit if yore. The okra was straight up flour breading with no cornmeal in the mixture and that's a game changer on this dish. Fried chicken was good. Squash, or squash casserole was a bland mess and left uneaten. Don't get me wrong. This three star rating means "OK". It's still a good meat and three. It's just not an exceptional meat and three as experiences my multiple prior visits. So that's when I asked the server if the restaurant had changed owners and yes, in April 2026. Well, there ya go, but Bon Chance to the new owners and Godspeed towards the hard work and keeping it going. Obviously, a full house lunch crowd on a Tuesday in June shows positive momentum. I'm just saying, pay attention to flavor, both in depth and complexity, to make these Southern standards stand out from the meat and three crowd.

The manager or menu planner needs some definite work on their choices. With time, I'm sure everything will improve. We were a party of five with each selecting their choice of entrees. We also started the evening with two appetizers. One was fried calamari and mussels in blanco. Both were excellent and actually better than the main entrees. My entree was the Rainbow trout which was good, but somewhat dry...which I credit to being just overcooked. Two of the group had the filet mignon medallions with shrimp on top. Both were very small and thin. The shrimp was actually bigger than the filet medallions. Really upset both in my group that selected that entree. Fortunately, the manager lower the price on the entree from $28.00 to $15.00. Kudos to the manager!! The chef came and apologized for the entree as well. He was very courteous and listened to our concerns after the meal. The other entrees were a chicken entree and braised baby back ribs. No complaints on either. Compliments to our server!! She was excellent and very accommodating. We'll go back soon because we love Annies location and we know improvements will come with time. BYOB....NICE!!
