Stopped by with a friend and we each got one. I was very disappointed with it. If I'm paying $2.50 for a cupcake I don't want box cake. You could easily go to the store and make your own for around the same price and get more out of it. They were also not very flavorful. The lime cupcake was a white box cake with food coloring and as far as we could taste had no lime flavoring. The buttercream frosting had some lime flavoring but was extremely sweet and had crunchy sugar granules that don't belong in a proper buttercream. The white chocolate strawberry had more flavor but still overly sweet and had that box cake flavor. The only good thing about them is the presentation. They look awesome but a complete let down when you eat them. If she switches to making her cake from scratch I would consider trying them again. read more

Nice to see a cup cake shop in town. The staff is very friendly and was in a nice shopping center. The cup cake we got was decent, however I wasn't a fan of the buttercream frosting. I feel that generic buttercream knocks down the quality a lot. This reminded me of a store bought cupcake, as the buttercream did not allow it to stand out. Now, if they knock the buttercream frosting to the curb and try some other frostings this would make things pretty awesome. read more

I love going to this cupcake shop!! The thing I love most about her cupcakes is the ever-changing variety of flavors she puts out 6 days a week!!! It's great that she always takes the chance of trying new flavors!! You're not stuck ordering from the same old, same old, week after week. The variety of flavors makes you want to go in daily to try them all out!!! The cupcakes & other goodies she sells always looks great and taste yummy too!! There have been a couple of times that I did unfortunately get 1 or 2 slightly overcooked cupcakes, it wasn't by any means burnt, just a tad on the dry side, but it still looked & tasted yummy. Definitely not a deal breaker, and I'll definitely be going back for more!! The only cupcake that Id like to see improved a little would be the green tea cupcake. It would be awesome if they used real matcha powder in the frosting or cake batter to give it that traditional green tea taste & look (almost like the green tea ice cream)! You're always greeted with a smile when you walk in and the shop is always immaculate. Wish they opened a little earlier so you can grab some cupcakes on your way to work! I have family in Hilo (but live on the mainland) and came across Cupcakes BOOM! on Instagram. They post what the available flavors are going to be for the day and have only a limited quantity available. A few months after I started following them, I visited the Big Island and got a chance to try Cupcakes BOOM! The cupcakes are cute, creative and very yummy. What I really need to rave about at this place is the macaroons. I had the Ube and Lilikoi macaroons and they were to die for! Best macaroons I have ever had! Now that I am back on the mainland I had to stop following them because it was torture seeing them post their daily goodies that I am a whole ocean away from. I can't wait until I go back and try more stuff. read more

As other reviewers say, the cakes are a bit dry but the frostings are AMAZING! I got the lilikoi, ube, chocolate haupia, and peanut butter guava. Ube was my favorite as the cake for that one wasnt dry. I enjoyed the macarons I had gotten too. So if you try this place, I'd say if you dont like the dry cake, tear off the bottom half and eat the delicious frosting with half the cake. read more

First time going to Cupcakes Boom today! I live so far away and had the chance to go today and get my favorite flavor, Chantilly! I love Chantilly and a total critic. I had to try it and satisfy my sweet tooth. The store was very cute but seem a little bare. Needed more character inside. I would just suggest that the cake itself be more moist. This place is uber cute! Just a little shop with "boom"ing cupcakes! The owner is extremely creative with the variety they make. I like the mini-packs (2 of each flavor) available because it allows me to try multiple flavors without overloading too much on sweets. The mini's are a great size for me though, because the cupcakes can be very rich. I've enjoyed the fruity pebbles, cinnamon toast crunch, strawberry lemonade, pineberry, and vanilla chai. They don't serve all flavors every day, so follow them on IG for their daily flavor postings. They also have other goodies: Cupcakes, BOOM! merch like tanks, customized ceramic mugs and bowls, as well as pre-made cookie ingredient jars for gift giving (just need to add wet ingredients). read more

My husband surprised me with an assortment of a four pack of cupcakes. I was so excited as I still love a good cupcake. They were decorated very nicely, all seemed to be have a good amount of yummy butter cream icing. I only ate one of the four cupcakes. The cupcake itself tasted really dry, i spread the icing around so it would be easier to swallow. Way too dry, even a box cake mix come out moist. I am not sure if it was because it was the afternoon & they had sat out all day & dried out. The one i ate was the lilikoi. I love lilikoi & the best part was the icing. Nice & tart best part of the cupcake. It's just frustrating as they look so good, the shop is cute & quaint. Please do something with your cupcake recipe needs improvement to make it moist. You pay a lot of money you would hope it tasted completely good not just half good. I will probably try this place out one more time in a few months. Someone bought 6 cupcakes for us at the office today. 2 were a lilikoi butter cream with a lilikoi drizzle, a peanut butter cupcake, a chocolate cupcake with chantily frosting, a german chocolate cupcake and a carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting. The carrot cake cupcake was the best tasting cake and the ONLY one that wasn't dry, There were 5 different flavors. 5 of the 6 cupcakes were very gag dry. The frosting and decorations were all very nice and tasted good, but the cupcakes were dry and one even tasted stale like it was frozen and then thawed and sat out for a few days before they frosted it. For around $3/cupcake, you should at least get a cupcake that wasn't stale!!! Not going back. This is the second time I'v got cupcakes from there and the cupcakes were gag dry. read more

I am happy Hilo finally has a cupcake shop. The shop itself is really cute, the cupcakes are creative and the customer service is great but the cupcakes don't really "do it" for me. The lilikoi was really dry and the accompanying frosting just didn't work which is a shame because I love lilikoi anything. The mint was piled way too high with frosting and the flavor was overpowering- I ended up scraping off 2/3 of it. The sundae had a tiny cake and a huge amount of frosting. I did enjoy the vanilla and red velvet though. Maybe I am a cupcake snob because I live in the mainland next to bakeries featured on cupcake wars. Would I go back? I follow cupcake boom on IG & today I actually was in the area and made a pit stop. I took my kids in and got a 4 pack of cupcakes. We got the lilikoi, chantilly, and the kids choose Neapolitan, & cotton candy. Got in the car and my fiancé and I shared half of each of the lilikoi and chantilly. They both were so good! He really liked the chantilly and I liked the lilikoi. So we went back in and order a 6 pack of both chantilly and lilikoi! Will be coming back for sure. The shop is cute, and girly. RIDICULOUS! They had no change and would not accept my $50 bill when the total was around $48 and so much cents. My sister and I had to search for coins in our car because they did not have enough. On their door it says that they accept credit card but when we attempted to pay with the credit card it would not work. This may be due to the fact that there is a chip on it. Target and everywhere else has a special slot to put our credit cards in and it ALWAYS works. They had a little machine attached to their iPad that would not accept the credit card. This credit card isn't special and works everywhere else. read more

Surprisingly bad for looking so good. Every flavor tastes the same - way too much and way sweet frosting with an greasy (not buttery) "sticks to your mouth" aftertaste. The cake is dry, uninteresting and tastes for all the world like a bad cake mix from a package! At $2.50 each I expected a LOT more. I usually come to cupcakes Boom to get my fix of cupcakes or truffles. I was always satisfied with the service and the quality of product until I trusted them with my husbands birthday cake. The owner had done my birthday cake in the past and I was very happy with it. What I wasn't happy with, was the lack of effort and time that went into my husbands birthday cake. The cake was small so I know it shouldn't have taken long to decorate. It was a small 49er cake and I wanted it with a football and 49er logo done with fondant. What I got was nothing close to what we had discussed. It looked like they just printed it on paper and stuck on the cake as if it were a last minute school project. Imagine wanting something spectacular and not getting what you paid for in return. I did get a 37 dollar credit and used it for their dessert platter. The dessert platter was dried up and from the day before. I think it's safe to say I will never come back to this place. It's hard because they were actually one of my favorite places. read more
