When we checked in, the host seated us at the parklet out on the street, even though there were plenty of open tables in the patio area and the restaurant wasn't busy. At the time, I didn't think much of it. However, shortly after, I noticed other guests being seated in the patio, which made the situation feel a bit off. It would have been appreciated if the host had been more thoughtful or at least explained the seating arrangement, rather than directing us outside without any context. The parklet dining experience was honestly not great. Cars and bicycles were constantly passing by while we were eating, which made it loud and uncomfortable. The greeting and seating process felt impersonal and could definitely use some improvement. They had an Easter Sunday brunch special, and we ordered the Monte Cristo Sandwich, a brunch burger, and some mimosas. The sandwich tasted decent, came with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, with a dusting of sugar. And the brunch burger tasted just ok. I was killing time on Saturday early afternoon on Valencia, when I walked by Curio. How is it I've never visited? I walked in, and somebody greeted me and started to hand me a menu. I just wanted to sit at the bar, I said. So he showed me to the bar on the right. No one else was there except the staff. I say, and asked for a drink menu. Nice list! I started with a Chupacabra, while the music, not too loud, played karaoke friendly tunes. A woman named Amanda, visiting from D.C. joined at the bar, and we started bopping along with Dez, the barkeep. Dez was fun, and offered us both a shot of a coffee concoction, which I gratefully accepted. I wasn't planning on a second drink, but the Sphinx sounded interesting, so I ordered. Like the first drink, it was excellent. Some of the staff came in, and shots of tequila were poured for them. Dez offered the same to me and Amanda, and again I accepted. We had a nice conversation about favorites, and I told her that I always like to ask the bartender what their favorite drink is, which is true. She quickly whipped up...something. My husband and I just randomly came across this restaurant that looked like it had some nice brunch options so we decided to check it out. It seems reservations are preferred, however we had none but were able to get in in decent timing. One thing I didn't love was how tiny and wobbly our table was. I was constantly trying to make sure I wasn't knocking stuff off our table. Also didn't love that the water glass they gave us still very clearly had a lipstick imprint on it. The server was super apologetic and got us new glasses right away, but he was mostly busy and didn't really check on us again afterwards. We waited some time before being able to wave someone down for to-go boxes and then again for our check. The food ended up being on the boring side - maybe it was just what we chose. My husband had the french toast - it was ok, nothing spectacular. I had the birriaquilas, it was ok but expected more birria/taste of birria. The band was engaging, groovy and entertaining to watch and listen to while having dinner. We got the calamari to start. Served hot, crispy and loved the dipping sauces that came with it. I also appreciated the peppers that were in the dish as well. For our main we split the coca cola braised bbq ribs dinner plate. The ribs were fall of the bone sticky, tangy and delicious. I couldnt particularly taste the coca cola aspect but they were good! The house pickles in this entree quickly became my favorite. The beans were decent but very tiny. It was like a shot glass size serving of beans. Would have appreciated a larger amount to enjoy. Service was a bit lackluster and not the most friendly or attentive but at least our dinner was good. Me and my mans went on a Saturday night. The building itself gives the feeling immense and spooky labyrinth. Being that I seem to gain 5 pounds every weekend on my excursions with him, I've been trying to order lighter meals. This neighborhood joint has some surprisingly flavorful bites that make for an enjoyable night out in the Mission. Standouts include the spicy sweet potato tempura (we subbed this $8 side dish as an alternative to one of the $14-20 appetizers and were surprised at how filling they were) and the coca-cola ribs. The spicy jack burger was decent but a bit too dry and not quite cooked to order, especially for a $20 burger (and mind you, it doesn't come with sides). We were surprised when sitting down for a 7:30pm reservation that several items were already out for the evening, including the calamari, the mixed green salads, the oysters, AND the braised short rib. It was a bit of a bummer as we had wanted to order the calamari and the short rib, but maybe it's a sign that these items were so popular and definitely worth trying next time!! The garden patio was darling and opened to Valencia Street, where we got to watch the bi-monthly salsa community dance in the street. Definitely a romantic and charming spot! The tables in the garden looked capable of hosting decent-sized parties without too much hassle. Service was eager, if not a bit chaotic -- our drinks were taken immediately, but it took some time before we could order our meals. I understand that it can be difficult for restaurants to get employees these days but having one server in the entire restaurant = poor Guest experience. The entire patio was packed with guests. After a recent experience, I'm updating my previous review. On this visit, for dinner and drinks before a concert, I sat in their outdoor patio (as opposed to the bar). It was a beautiful early spring evening. They had a Jazz/Reggae threesome playing live, which really added to my enjoyment. The staff was so nice and attentive. I was dining on my own, which can sometimes feel a bit awkward. Not so here. They made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. I ordered their Chupachabra cocktail, which is made from both tequila and mezcal. It was so delicious. When I eat out, I never have room for dessert. I really wanted to try their Bread Pudding ($10) so I purposely ordered a smaller dinner, a 1/2 Mixed Green Salad ($8) and 1-Beef Quesabirria ($10). Everything was excellent. The sauce that comes with the Quesabirra, which is a taco with tender beef, is so tasty your tempted to eat it like a soup. I was so wise to leave room for the Bread Pudding. The flavors of the sauce really added to the overall delicious pudding. It's topped with fresh chopped strawberries and some fresh whipped cream. Seriously yum! As The Chapel is one of my favorite concert venues, it's so convenient to come a little early and have food and drinks at Curio before hand. Sorry, I have to be honest. Your deviled eggs are too salty, the brioche avocado toast has guacamole on it that has too much lime. It says mashed avocado and that's what I was expecting. The tomatoes on top were nice. I recommend a drizzle of honey on top of the guacamole if you want to give it a more brunch/breakfast feel and balance it out. Our second round drinks came out way too late (we literally had the check in hand when it was brought out); and our coffee never came. The bloody mary is not good. We ended up not going with the bottomless as we were recovering a little bit but ordered individual cocktails instead. I got the black magic Bloody Mary which was delicious. The food was pretty quick to come out and the presentation of every dish was great. Such a cool place with a wild vibe. Curio is an old mortuary - you can even see the old casket elevator that was used when you wait for the bathroom. We sat in the main seating area, which is kind of outside but covered and has heat lamps, so it doesn't feel like you are outside. We were there on Saturday, and there was a lively piano player. I had a locally brewed beer, but the drinks looked great, and my friends said they were good. In terms of food, I had the American Burger with a Katsu patty, which is a fried cheese patty. It was divine! The burger was perfectly cooked, and when you bit into the patties, the melted cheese came oozing out. AMAZING! I also tried the deviled eggs, which were great! They had just enough spice and were not too runny. My friend had Coffee Rubbed Chicken Strips, which are gluten-free. You couldn't even tell they were gluten-free, they were also amazing.
