This is the second time I have walked into this location and not been approached one time. Both times spent over $350 and spent near an hour trying to find what I needed. Killian helped me for a good 30 minutes showing me and teaching me about all their helmets. I've been going to Cycle Gear for years. Although I ride an old cruiser and they seem to specialize in sport touring and off-road stuff, they have a good selection of gear for all riders. One of the nicest things is that they're open on Sunday, unlike most other shops. Last week, I was heading up that way and realized I needed some oil. I always enjoy a visit and was able to pick up oil I needed. I also looked at some new helmets, as mine is getting a little long in the tooth. What's nice is that all the people who work there, know a lot of about motorcycle gear and what they sell. There's no high-pressure pushing, just good information so I can make an informed decision. Over the years I've bought a bunch of oil, filters and other small items, including some nice gloves there. Really a great place to get cycle gear. read more

Very frustrating experience trying to get tires swapped here. Bought a pair of tires from Revzilla for an old scooter I'm trying to use to help some family practice for getting motorcycles in the future, and I get an email saying Cycle gear can install them for me. How convenient. I go online to check that this Austin location offers this service, good news, it does! And this is about the extent of info they tell you, besides the fact that this is a first come, first served situation.. So I go out and rent a uhaul trailer since I'm like an hour away. As I'm driving to pick up the trailer I call to make sure there isn't an issue with a massive pile up of people or that the machine is broken. I'm assured that everything is in order but despite not mentioning it anywhere on their website tires can only on a disconnected wheel. So especially for the back wheel you're essentially doing more work than they are providing just to get the wheel off. Splendid. This would have been great to know before I rented the now useless uhaul. I deal with this anyway, no problem, I called around to other shops and this seems to be common practice. It is just bizarre to me but I can't fully blame Cycle Gear. I remove the wheels myself, load them up in my car, drive the hour down to this location and the clerk very boredly informs me they won't do moped tires anymore. Please for the love of god when you email people about a service, when you describe a service on your website, when people call on the phone asking about a service you provide, list important information like this. I'm not going to give this a one star because while their stock isn't anything to write home about it is very comprehensive for economical gear. The service I've received at this location and in Oklahoma have been very mediocre, with attendants acting very disinterested in customers, but the store itself is mostly fine. read more

The best thing about cycle gear is that it's open Sundays and Mondays! They have limited stock, and depend upon bullying the customer into pre-paying for special orders to get what he wants, which can more easily be done online anyway. They play stupid little shopping games (making you sign up for a "RPM club membership", cost of $60, in order to get decent shipping and 5% discounts on SOME of the things they sell... After spending $2000, you MIGHT recoup your $60) I absolutely despise these asinine little shopping games! Just give the customer good prices all the time and maintain a good inventory! AARGH! At least they have a decent return policy, so when the thing that you order finally does come in, and it turns out to not be what you want, you can at least get your money back... Great price on Dunlop Sportmax Q3 + tires that I needed for my '07 Suzuki SV650. Also, the staff is very courteous, helpful, and professional. I bought the tires online and had them delivered to the store in Austin, intending to have them mount and balance them at the store. However, after riding all the way from my house in FAR southeast Austin (off WM Cannon), to their store on Research Blvd, I was told they do not remove your old tires. You have to bring them the rims, with the old tires removed. They were very understanding as to why I was frustrated, and I maintained my cool. I understand they are not a full service shop, and they have their limitations, but this very important fact was obviously not made clear to me at the time of purchase. Otherwise I would not have ridden my bike, on the old tires, all the way to their store in north Austin. I decided to just return the tires because it would have been too much hassle to ride home, drive back to the store in my truck, go home, then on another day, find a way to get the bike and the tires to a shop to be mounted and balanced, which would have meant renting a trailer. I gave them three stars for their great selection, the good price on tires (although their gear isn't priced very competitively), and the service was very friendly and courteous. read more

Shitty place to buy anything. Tried to return a Sena head set that was recommended to me. Was told it was a great product and the sales guy said he used the set. Just learned when I tried to return that they do not take back headsets after it's been opened. Nothing on the receipt and nothing from the sales associates when I bought it. So in CycleGears eyes I'm shot out of luck. They couldn't have cared less that I was displeased with their recommendations. I even bought a warranty so all the guy would do is exchange the product for a new one. WTF never buying from cycle gear again. If I had just bought this online I could have returned it. I had been off of bikes for a few years and when I returned to the addiction recently I discovered that Cycle Gear had expanded. It's no longer a small shop crammed to the gills with a mediocre assortment of stuff, it is now roomy, very well stocked, and the people there offer more help than before. I'm not quite old enough to retire, but have been Type 1 diabetic for over 50 years. I am thankful that every person working at Cycle Gear and most of the customers were wearing masks. It was a bit intimidating walking in there for the first time but everyone was immediately helpful and professional. Eric went above and beyond helping me fit a helmet, boots and gloves while offering great info about local riding groups and meetups. My whole experience there made me much more excited to be entering a new community! My ordered helmet shipped to their store by the next day and they took the time to test fit it on me. I was in desperate need of a rear tire for my 2007 Harley Heritage Softail on a Sunday. Called these guys half expecting they may not have a tire to fit my Harley. The man looked up his inventory and found one in my size. I took the wheel off the bike at a friends and took it to the store where this crew quickly hooked me up with a new tire mounted and balanced. After I put it back on the bike I can continue my ride home from Austin, TX to Carlsbad, NM. Most places which have stuff for Harley's are close on Sundays and Monday's. Every time I've been in here, I've been assisted quickly and never had to deal with feeling "like a girl" in such a dude-oriented environment. AWESOME. This place rules because: after my moto safety course, I went in to drop some dinero on a serious full-face helmet. The guy who welcomed me and asked what I was looking for ("full face helmet") first directed me to something on sale. When I told him that I was looking to avoid more head injuries, that money was not a big deal, and that most of all I wanted a helmet that made me feel sexy when I wear it so I'll never be tempted to ride without it, he said, "We have what you need" and suggested a few of his favorites. When I decided on a Shoei RF-1100 he suggested I wear my preferred size in the store for a few minutes and make sure it felt okay. While we continued talking, I revealed that orange was my favorite color and he said, "I think we have that helmet in small, and in orange. Let me check." Indeed they did, and now I own the coolest helmet EVER and I don't leave home without it. They don't have the biggest selection of ladies gear, but I'm not surprised. I don't like the Bilt stuff; it all runs way too wonky in the sizes, and apparently they size all their gear for petite women because my digits and appendages are too long for everything they make on the ladies side. On a recent trip, the salesgirl took a long while to me find the right size jacket, even though they didn't have what I was looking for in stock, so I could use the sizing info to order one online. read more

Staff is always very friendly here. They've been willing to help me out and given me lots of good tips on which gear they recommend. Unfortunately, this location is kind of cramped. They don't have a large selection of boots -- and for a gal with thick calves like me, these cookie cutter boots didn't make the cut. In fact, they were just cuttin' into my legs. Haha I guess it's not the manufacturer's fault, but I'm not even that big of a lady! I decided to try the men's boots, and they didn't have any that were small enough in the foot. Size 9, 10 and above. I wear a 6.5 in men's. So no luck finding boots there. I had to go online and order some... Came in to try on some pants. Small selection for women riders, and a bit pricey if ya ask me. I went online and got some nice riding pants for less than $60. Kevlar and everything! But, Nee, if you don't like it why the 4-stars? It is what it is, folks. A chain store. I'd consider Cycle Gear the "Walmart" of motorcycling. If you need stuff on the fly, this is the place to go to. If you want more quality at a better price, I'd shop online. read more

I'm impressed by one thing about this place: How much stuff they pack into a tight space. They're a busy shop full of merchandise that leans toward the racing look I find really aesthetically unpleasant, but that doesn't mean their hardware or helmets won't work just as well as anybody else's. (And they probably have what you need, 7 days a week, whereas dealerships are open only 6 days.) When I came here with my motorcycle-lover, he was thoroughly impressed, and the staff was all about getting him exactly what he wanted and more. It was a weekend, and the place was packed. On a weekday by myself, I felt much less comfortable, firstly because the shop was empty but for a few clerks (and all but one cleared out within seconds of my entry). The one guy who helped me was unfortunately unable to find what I wanted in their limited stock of the items. He offered to look for one in a catalog, but when I couldn't tell him the exact item I wanted (I needed to browse a bit), he quickly lost interest. I had assumed there was some kind of upselling/commission thing going on here given how aggressive the salespeople were on the previous visits, but I guess they want people who know what's what. That's fine, it's just an awkward environment for casual browsing. I left without buying anything; when he's bought things in the past, he's mostly been quite happy with them. With the advice from my fellow Yelpers, I ventured to the this store since it was the closest. They have a good wall of helmets, jackets, gloves, and other apparel. They also do tires, which seem like a good deal. The staff were really nice and helpful and explained about this and that. Definitely worth going to, even if you are just to ask questions. Remember, if you took a safety course in motorcycles, you get a discount on pretty much all your gear, so remember to tell them and show them you card! 15% discount is pretty damn awesome vs 0%. Came in a few weeks ago to look for a helmet. Tried on a few different models and got some advice on fit and comfort from Katrina. Ended up purchasing a 707 Vendetta 2 which wasn't in stock in Austin, but would be shipped in from San Antonio. I was told it'd take about 2 days for the helmet to arrive since it was only a few hours away in SanAn. I called on Tuesday, it wasn't in. I called on Thursday, still nothing. On Friday, Katrina called to let me know that the San Antonio store had lost all its merchandisers (fired? quit? who knows) and no salespeople have access to UPS deliveries/shipments soooooooooo they have no way of knowing when my helmet is coming in. She was sincerely apologetic and let me know she'd call back when she had more updates. I went in today (Monday) and spoke to two of the employees who reiterated what was in her message. Basically, with no-one there authorized to take care of shipments there's just a hug pile of stuff that needs to be shipped/inventoried which is just adding up. I was told it could take a day a week or a month for my helmet to come in, nobody knows how long or when they'll find out how long it'll be. Needless to say, I am incredibly pissed. The only reason this place is receiving any stares at all is because of the employees who have been very open and honest with me the entire time. Katrina was helpful and made sure to follow up and explain everything to me and the two guys who were there today (Jesse + ??) were also very patient even though I kept asking questions and was clearly very angry. They gave me the same model/size helmet I purchased in a different color as a "loaner" so I would have something in the meantime which I appreciate. read more

The variety of products and the choices between brands is good. If they don't have it in the store they can order it for you. The staff was friendly. They answered my questions then allowed me to shop on my own. They were not pushy. It is nice that they have both a local presence and online store. The online store is convient for researching products and price checking, but I like having the physical store available because I like to try on my gear to ensure that it is a good fit. Don't trust the salesman with the long beard. Maybe because he saw a woman or a sucker walk into the store. I went in there looking for a bike jacket for my son, because he was going to be picking up his motorcycle from a shop that was 122 miles away and driving on the dangerous HWY 1 35 North at night. I told the salesman that I needed a jacket with high visibility at night, because my son wanted to ride when it was cooler. Well guess what? He sold me one that was discounted and discontinued that was great for day, but you couldn't see his body at night! It didn't have even one reflector on it!! Didn't know this until he took off. I don't know about jackets? I trusted the guy. Good sale for them though. I took video and pictures if anyone needs proof.
