I was not very happy with my experience at Cycle Gear. I went in to purchase a helmet: the inventory was very disorganized, none of the staff working the floor new what helmets were in which boxes, most helmets were not in the correct boxes, the entire process took about 2 hours. Upon checking out, there was a 15 minute wait in line with two extra registers not being used, while some of the employees were in the back of the store joking around. Cycle Gear ended up not having the helmet size that I wanted, so they told me they would order it ... it's now been a month, and I am still without a helmet. I 've called twice, they said it hadn't come in yet, they said they would call back, they didn't. Today I found out that one of the employees ordered the wrong helmet, so I have to wait yet another week. Overall, I found the store to be disorganized, confusing, slow, and not a fun experience. The positives are that the employees are really nice and receptive, and they seem to want to be helpful, which is why I'm giving them two stars. However, they recently told me the store is coming under new management that would shape up a lot of these negative aspects, so perhaps it will improve in the coming months. read more

This review is in part for the store and in part for a specific employee. I've been in twice now to buy a few items and I've been very impressed by: the quality/variety of merchandise they carry, the highly competitive prices they offer, and the attitude/knowledgeability of the staff. A couple of the brands they carry (Bilt, Sedici) are "house" brands, but the quality doesn't suffer and there are plenty of others to choose from. The prices are stellar. I went in yesterday looking for an armored leather riding jacket and walked out with a very nice Sedici that was 20% off retail. Definitely could not get that price on Amazon or anywhere else, and I price-checked on my phone before I bought. In addition, the jacket has a lifetime store warranty. Can't beat that. My sales rep was a guy named Les and he was very knowledgeable and patient with me. I had a ton of questions about product and about riding in general and he nailed all of them. He didn't try to push any particular brand on me but clearly articulated the pros and cons of each and explained what worked for him and why. In the end, the jacket sold itself (as it should!). My experience so far has been that the staff takes a very hands-off approach until you seek them out for help. No pushy salesmanship, no hovering over your shoulder, but they're definitely there when you're ready. If you're anything like me and a bit put off by the "tough guy" attitude of some riding shops around town, this is the place for you. Five stars for excellent staff and excellent shopping environment. The single reason for 4 stars: their location is pretty small and cramped and they have boxes of merchandise strewn all over the place. Now don't get me wrong: I'd rather see a working shop that clearly moves a ton of product than an immaculate show room with crickets chirping. But it does make it a lil annoying to get around the store. On the huge upside, they have a full inventory on their website and they can literally order you ANYTHING (bike related) with no commitment required. read more

I just recently started riding and went here to buy my very first helmet. I was super nervous about what to expect. Any experience I've had with purchasing things that I have zero knowledge about has always been rough...people are usually rude and condescending and that can sometimes be overwhelming. Naturally, that is exactly what I was expecting when I arrived here and thankfully I was pleasantly surprised! The shop was being run by ladies that day and they were both very nice. When one asked me if I needed help as I was looking at gloves I knew nothing about I responded with 'Yes, I have no idea what I am doing, this is all very new for me!' She was happy to help, or at least she pretended to be. She explained the different types and what is best and worst and told me what she had for herself. She gave me options and then let me choose instead of only pushing one thing on me! She was very patient with me when I was choosing a helmet and let me try on as many as I wanted and went completely out of her way to find the right size and color in certain helmets even when it wasn't right in front with all the other helmets. I am so thankful to have been able to work with her and I am bummed I cannot remember her name. They made my first experience at a bike gear shop way more amazing than I was expecting it to be! Also...they give a small discount if you just took a rider course and have your card (not sure if this is through multiple academies or just the one I went to but it's pretty cool)! read more

If I could go do negative stars I would. Maybe because it's one of the only place in Austin u can find or order thing an for ur motorcycle. But their lack of knowledge, customer service, and being able to order the right part and communicate sucks. The did a service for me. F it up. Ordered a new part. They ordered the wrong one. Sad thing is everything they did I had to call them. No one called me. I had to go to another place to get the right part. (woods). Which now I know where I will be shopping for now on. Get people that know what they are doing and not how to miss up some one's weekend n week for 1 small item. I don't know what happen. They used to have great people. Friendly staff and a good selection of products. Only 3 stars this time though for the reason that management needs to train new employees on how to mount tires properly, which mine were not. Installer did not know that the yellow dot is supposed to be lined up with the valve stem, which it was not on either tire. I had to rebalance the front tire. Also he forgot to put the valve stem caps back on and after some prodding over the phone he finally agreed to mail them to me since it is an hour round trip for me to drive there and back. Lastly I was told the tires would be ready when I arrived but they hadn't even been started on until I got there, which caused an additional 1/2 hour wait. read more

They are expensive, but at least they're helpful. Average retail here is about double the price you could pay online, but they make up for it in spades with kindness. These guys accept returns, no hassle. They'll recommend a certain product for your needs, even if it's the cheaper one. I like to support local and avoid chains. I was therefore a little hesitant when I moved to Austin and these guys are probably the major players. Guess what - big name chain but small town service. These guys are awesome - friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, helpful - you name it they have it in spades. Store policy is a free balance (dynamic balance no less!) on tires even if you didn't buy from them. I could NOT pay them! And they did it cheerfully like I was their best customer. My buddy bought a bluetooth com setup from them. Usually it's pay your money and begone with ye. Not these guys - they installed it for him for free. These guys earn your business - give 'em a try. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable, and do not have that "better then you" attitude that I have come across in some cycle shops. Found good prices on tires, pretty good selection of batteries, bought an RF-1100 there that the sales dude guided me towards and I absolutely love it.... I can only rate it three stars because of the five or six times I've been there, only one staff member seems customer-service oriented (the one who helped me with the helmet selection). The rest give off the impression of being just another group of young elitist-type riders. Ironically, they also move like MOLASSES behind the sales counter! Needed a part. Called and was told I had to come down there for them to check. When I got there, the salesperson seemed confused and could not locate the part. Finally, two of his co-workers told him which one to get. Once he found it, he proceeded to make up a special price that was almost double what the part costs. This place is the worst!!! They are scam artist with ERIC selling me a helmet when I asked if it was SA2015 approved to do TX Mile was informed yes to show up to the TX mile and find out it is not and was not going to be able to race!! Eric then when I returned to store informing him what had happened said he would return helmet due to circumstance to show up and him to tell me he changed his mind saying the helmet was damaged. Since it was never worn he not only took my $200 he sold me a what he claims a damaged helmet and would not let me get refund. I have never been treated more rude and when I disclosed that if the helmet was damaged he sold it to me that way a SORRY was all that was given. DONT EVER DO BUSINESS W THEM UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE OUT OF HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS DAMAGED MERCHANDISE AND WILL BE LIED TO JUST TO MAKE A BUCK!!! read more

WORST MOTORCYCLE SHOP EVER!!! The staff is so inconsiderate and it is all thanks to the manager. I called to check up on a helmet that I ordered and it was a week past it's delivery date and the manager hung up on me. They never sent me a tracking number or email to see where my helmet was in route but it was my fault for calling to check-in. Don't waste your time here there are so many better shops in austin to get gear at. read more

I am totally disappointed with the service Cycle Gear provided. They sold me a tire that was seven years old. I, as a new rider, didn't have the expertise to check the manufacture date on the tire when it was sold to me . It's sad that I would have to check up on them. But after I bought a 'new' tire from them, I was told and then educated on how to read the manufactured date on the tire by the awesome, Austin City Power Sports, who was willing to not only find a new tire, drive to New Braunfels to pick it up but then install it while i waited the next day. Unfortunately, for Cycle Gears, Austin City Power Sports caught that i was sold a seven year old tire. When I confronted Cycle Gear, the manager told me that they 'didn't have the ability to control what was sent to them.' WTF?! I told them they need to look at their process management. There are 3 checks they can control: 1. the inventory needs to be constantly monitored 2. when someone pulled the tire for sale, the date needs to be checked. 3. When the sale is made the manufactured date shows up on the receipt (this fact was confirmed by the sales manager when I called). Cycle Gear was unapologetic in their service and should be ashamed. This place is great if you need some gear on the spot. Other than that their prices are crazy over priced compared to everything you can buy online. I suggest you look for things online cause there are much cheaper sites you can buy off of if you don't mind waiting on the shipping. My husband and I went in today because we bought some Shoei Helmets and wanted to purchase new visors for them in different colors. The selection sucked, they had 2 different normal looking colors. The guy who helped us at the counter was a shorter hispanic guy with sunglesses..expecting him to be nice and have a great attitude like us since we were laughing at how much inexperience we have with helmets..the guy acted like our helmets were complete crap although they cost over 700 dollars in retail and the one I had was completely NEW. He looked at my husband's shoei helmet for about five minutes trying to find the model number which he found. For some reason he couldn't find the year it was made..although when we got home we found it in no time. It was a 2008 shoei helmet and he said it was from around 2004 and was saying it was super OLD. It's a barely used helmet and only has some scratches on it...but he treated it as if it was a piece of complete crap lol. We expected him to at least joke along with us about not knowing much information on helmets and expected him to be more helpful, cause that's how you should normally be when you are a worker. He acted very oddly for a worker there. We felt super uncomfortable, knowing the high ego that guy had about helmets. We almost ended up purchasing a visor for it..until we noticed it was 95$. After we told him we would have to come back for it we ended up finding different ones online, may not be of the same "quality" but they are great enough for around 29$ up to 75$. The other guys that worked there seemed nice on the other days we have been there..but this guy in particular we just are not very fond of. Don't act stuck up and treat people so uncomfortably if you are a worker there. You're NOT the owner. read more

My husband and I are new to motorcycles, and we headed here after taking a basic riding class to buy helmets and gloves. Derek was very nice and not pushy, helping us choose different helmets to try on and telling us the different reasons people choose different products. Not only was he clearly passionate about motorcycles, he also seems to be passionate about helping people find what they want. Also, we got a lovely discount for having taken the class, which was nice. The only thing I wanted that I didn't find was a white full face helmet. Being inexperienced, I want to be as visible as possible when I'm out on the road, but the selection of helmets at Cycle Gear is largely black or dark colors. Maybe this is the case at most stores like this, I'm not sure. We settled for helmets that are white and black. read more

These guys are great. They consistently match ANY price, even ones online at discount websites. They go out of their way to get you the item specific to design, whether in one of their stores or from the vendor. I'll give you that they don't have the largest selection of gear, particularly dirt but they also don't have a large shop. They'd be incredible in a dealership sized space and I'm sure the service would be much better. I've bought boots, helmet and roost guard from them plus some small maintenance items and just appreciate having a shop in Austin that I can count on to match affordability but surpass in service and ease of returns relative to online vendors. Let me start of by saying that this place would be great to buy a helmet! but unfortunately I did not by anything. This place is more focused around sport bikes and gear. I went in looking for a leather vest, and they had about 12 hiding behind boxes by the front door. which didnt make me want to even look at them since it was so few and out of eyesight. But the customer service stinks..when I walked in their was a peace officer and another guy. No greeting as I walked in, none asked me if I needed any assistance. or anything.So after walking around the store I left since I didnt feel their customer service was worth my money. As I began to exit, a lady walked through the front door in a dress, and everyone became customer service orientated all of a sudden. I dont know if they were racist, or just pervs because of the female. but I definitively. Will not be recommending this place to anyone. read more

Well after going into to this specific location and not having a good experience, I thought I would try one more time and give them the benefit of the doubt. So I go into the store on my lunch break (about 2pm on a Thursday). I walked in and there was only one other customer in the store checking out, and I counted at least 3 employees at various times on the floor. I was trying to locate a specific kind of oil weight for my R1 as well as just look around for any other maintenance items I needed. I walked around for at least 15 minutes, not once, not even one time was I ever given any eye contact, acknowledged, or asked if I needed help during my entire visit! I'm sorry but I worked retail before I would always would acknowledge a customer who walked in or at least ask them if they were doing ok, it's retail 101! These guys were more worried about what their plans for the weekend than helping anyone out. They weren't even busy and at one time I was THE only customer in the store. I even had a guy within 4 feet of me stocking lubricants on the same aisle not even look much less acknowledge I was standing there. You would think with the economy being in the dump they would try and retain whatever customers they still had, but not here. Overall I'm done with this place, it's obvious these guys don't give two cents about who walks in and their egos are ridiculous. As I left, the guy behind the counter didn't say one word and watched me walk out with a smirk on his face. Unbelievable. If you want to be ignored, pay store front brick and mortar prices plus tax, and be bombarded by their cheap Chinese Bilt riding gear, than by all means go to the Cycle Gear off 183 in Austin, TX. However I would highly recommend considering an online sportbike store like Kneedraggers or SportbikeTrackGear. THERE I WARNED YOU. read more
