The female cashiers could work on customer service. I came into this establishment for the very first time today excited to try the food. In your biography, it states that "we're here to serve you." The only thing I was served was a bad attitude. I did not feel welcomed at all. The customer service was very short and snippy and the cashier was more concerned with serving "tea" with her coworker than serving her actual customer. Unfortunately the food was pretty good so I might be back. If I do return, hopefully there will be someone there to provide better service. What a shame. read more

Damatos sandwiches always hit. I get the oven roasted turkey sub with no tomatoes and extra hot peppers. Highly, highly recommend if you're looking for a sandwich with quality ingredients and freshly baked bread (baked every night across the street). I recently also tried their cookies and pastries, and it's the same story. HITS after HITS!!! Nutella kolachkes, lemon twist cookies, tiramisu, etc. Been going here for over a year and it's always been a positive experience. Also love the staff here. Let's start with the highlight-- this place has amazing Italian sandwiches! My husband and I stopped here after a round of golf, and got some food for us and some friends we were having over. We ordered: - 4 sandwiches: Italian, chicken parm, meatball, and prosciutto & bocconcini. - 2 Arancini: beef & mozzarella, spinach & ricotta - 2 cannolis The sandwiches were all amazing and we all disagreed on which the best was (we couldn't reach a consensus) The arancini were standard arancini. The cannolis were the biggest let down since we prefer ricotta-filled cannolis, and these were just way too sweet for our preference. I am willing to try more bakery items next time. Lastly, they offer some sandwiches on a focaccia bread but they were sold out for the day when we arrived (our fault since we stopped in at 5:45p and they close at 6p). Next time, I'm getting that focaccia bread. The place is a cute mom&pop shop with a few tables nearby but I consider it more and grab-and-go-styled place. Everything is good in the world when you go to D'amato's! Old school atmosphere. Love the wood floor, the coffee maker, the heaping cases, all of it. Fresh bread, such fabulous sandwiches. The Italian and the meatball or make your own are my faves. Lemon knots and so many other great cookies. The soup is just ok but the rest of the menu is on point. Good soda selection, too. Have heard such great things about D'Amato's since moving to Chicago almost four years ago. Have tried a few things over the years, and kept thinking my tastebuds must be off. As a former New Yorker, the expectations are quite high for a great Italian deli/bakery. Unfortunately, D'Amato's falls a little short. The bread is quite good, as is sourced to places all over the city. No surprise at all. And the prices are equally great, you get a ton for your buck (cash only). The spinach arancini is made with Spanish rice and chicken broth, which is a little odd. You're usually getting Arborio rice in your arancini and a lot more mozzarella - these were pretty flavorful, just different. As far as the eggplant and chicken parms, while they were cooked well, there's just absolutely no flavor. The sauce is fairly plain, and the breading has absolutely no seasoning. I guess after 51 years things have changed. I wanted to love this place - we are dying for a great Italian spot like back home. I guess we'll have to keep looking... read more

I love the idea of such a friendly neighborhood business. As all reviews have said, is a busy place with multiple lines. Right-side for ordering, left for waiting for your order, and an occasional middle if there's room for another ordering line. I ordered two hearty looking slices of their supreme pizza, meatball panini, and a vodka chicken parm (not pictured). Overall, the food was ok. The portions were huge and the value for the price is great especially in the city, but the flavors and textures were a bit bread heavy and somewhat soggy. Seasoning on the meatball sub was barely there and the bread was partly stale which surprised me as this is place is also a bakery. The peppers helped though. The chicken parm was pretty wet that the breading all fell off. The pizza had a ton of veggies on it and looked great, but barely any sausage on it. This was my first time here and will be back to try a ton more that looked great. Motes sandwiches and desserts! The value again was good, but I'd suggest if you order anything to make sure you get as many spices and peppers added. Maybe ask if they can go easy with the sauce. read more

52 minute wait for 1 to go sandwich. About 10 people in line. Waited about 8-10 minutes to order. No prices for a lot of items but when I got to the register the lady rudely took my order. No big deal maybe it was a bad day for her. Told it wouldn't be long 10-15 minutes. Again no big deal.... Except it took 52 minutes of waiting before I finally got my 1 sandwich. Not just me waiting that long but the people behind me as well. No communication here. Just a crowd of people. Nobody knows where to go for phone orders vs the line. People who had phone orders waited almost as long as me to get their food too even though they called ahead and were told when it would be ready. My friend has been begging me to go. One evening the trains weren't working and was stuck at Milwaukee on the blue line. So decided that we would have dinner there. I had an Italian sub, my son had a turkey sub and my husband had the chicken Parm! It must have been their off day, because the bread did not taste fresh, the chicken Parm only had half of the sandwich with hi ken, the other half didn't have s piece of chicken, just cheese and sauce. I told him to go and complain but he was embarrassed! My son's turkey sandwich literally had 2 slices of turkey! Definitely not what we expected and just having old bread was definitely NOT what I was looking for. Big disappointment read more

It's a place that you need to drop by since they have the most delicious bakery and breads. It doesn't feel like they have preservatives since it's so fresh. It's made daily. Try out some of their sandwiches and delight dessert. It's more of a cash and carry place. I will visit this place time and time again if I get a chance to past by. I think it's priced slightly higher than expected and so look out for that. The people are very pleasant and good to have a quick chat with the worker. No parking and so be careful not to block main traffic areas. Go to the side street or something and come back to visit.
