I enjoyed a pizza last night with my good friend who had ordered Pizza for takeout. We chatted over a glass of wine and had to reheat the pizza since we let it sit out as we talked. I warmed up the pizza in the oven for about 15 minutes and it was perfectly heated and tasted delicious! My friend said this pizzeria has been around La Mesa for a long time but I hadn't heard of it till last night. If you want semi deep dish pizza with with a good crust and lots of toppings with cheese that don't soak through, this pizza is for you! read more

I did not like this pizza, but my family thought it was ok. To me, I have never had a greasier pizza. The box was so saturated with grease that my tabletop had a nice greasy sheen on it after dinner. I had a giant drop of grease fall off my slice and ruin my shirt. My kid also thought it was too salty and did not want to finish his. We ordered an extra large 3 topping pizza and asked for double pepperoni and olives: it might have been the double pepperoni that led to the grease and salt overload. We also ordered a large sausage, which my kids liked better, but which I did not try. All in all, I doubt we will order from here again. read more

It's not too hard to make a decent pizza, but it takes a little more sill and talent to make a great pizza. The pizza chefs here must have a lot of skill and talent because this pizza is great! First time ordering from and had postmates deliver for us. We ordered a pepperoni pizza, a pastrami sandwich, a side of meatballs and a side of sausage and 2 cannolis. The food was absolutely delicious. They put too much sauce on the meatballs and sausage but still delicious. This is the only place that I have actually liked the meatballs. OMG!!! Hands down best pizza in SD! Only thing was pizza and garlic bread no longer hot from the hour wait, that was the exact wait time quoted, so I'm NOT mad, however that is the worst thing I have to say! I'M IN LOVE! Never, never order from these people. Terrible customer service. Was told the pizza would be delivered in approximately 45 minutes, more than an 1.5 hours later it still hadn't appeared. I called the restaurant to inquire and was told that I "needed to be patient as all pizzas recently ordered were out for delivery." They didn't want to know who I was or what I ordered and just repeated that "the pizzas were out for delivery." Their pizza isn't worth the wait or frustration. Garbage customer service and the pizza is mediocre at best. Find somewhere else to order from. We are done with D'Amatos, permanently. Called again to inquire about delivery time - I had to force the dirtbag on the other end of the phone to look for my order. He finally stated that he thought my order was out for delivery, but the streets and hiways were busy and that I needed to wait. I advised him we were through with D'Amatos and his response was "OK." Really good lasagna & ravioli. I usually have my food delivered here. It comes pretty fast & still hot! I love their bread to go along with my pasta. I've had their pizza but the pasta is what shines here to me. They are friendly whenever I call or occasionally pick up my order. Wish I could give 0 stars. Had the worst experience with D'Amatos last Friday night. Ordered the family meal and our salads were not in the order. I called about 5 minutes after the delivery guy left, they said they would send someone out with them right away....an hour later still no salads. So I call them all they can say is they are on their way and no care at all that it had been an hour. So now another 30-45 minutes go by and still no salads, we call back. Ask to speak to the manager which they don't want to let us. Finally speak to him and we get a half ass apology and he's willing to give us free salads the next time we order. After all of this back and forth with them on the phone our salads arrive almost 2 hours after we originally got our food and delivered by the same delivery driver. I actually have to say that he was the only one that we dealt with that night that was actually apologetic and meant it. It's very unfortunate that they treat their customers so awful. We had been going to DAmatos for at least 15years or more and now I have to say we will no longer give them our business or money. We have been buying pizza here for years. Everything has always been great with good service. Tonight when I got home and opened the box to my pizza I noticed two huge bubbles, one the size of a golf ball and one the size of a baseball. In addition, half the pizza was burned. Being tired from a long week, I decided to just eat it. The part that wasn't burned was overcooked and had no sauce. It was nothing like any other pizza we got from D'Amatos in the past. My boyfriend brought the pizza back to the store and was greeted by a manager with a horrible attitude. She opened up the box and, in a snotty manner, said, "it's not burned". He responded by saying, "you gotta be kidding me!". She was upset that we did not call first and copped an attitude when he asked for the manager. She said she was the manager. He then asked if he could talk to the owner. The guys behind the counter stepped in saying, "that's enough of that...just get out of here!" and went to give him his money back. Throughout the whole thing, she insisted that the pizza was not burned. When they were trying to give him his money back, she said, "I'm trying to help this fu**ing customer, he won't let me help him". My boyfriend requested that she not swear at him and she responded, "that's something my dad would say to me". We will never go here again and will be sure to spread the word around our Mt. Helix community. Apparently they don't believe the customer comes first and are ok with selling a crappy pizza to a long time customer. read more

Got a mushroom and pepperoni pizza and a salad and it was pretty disappointing. I use Yelp a lot to see what others are saying and this place has 4 stars so I was excited to try it. Usually a 4 star place comes through for me. IMO Bronx Pizza (best in San Diego), Flippin (I know, I know... it's a chain) and Knockout are way better.... But they aren't around La Mesa. Long time customers-not any more! Got a pizza a week ago which was not cooked enough-all watery in center & toppings fell off. Called them to complain & they (Chris who claimed management) offered to make another which would take too long so asked for a free one later instead. Tonight we thought we would get that pizza-1/2 cheese & green pepper and other half cheese, green pepper, mushrooms and pepperoni. Is thsat difficult to understand? Apparently it was! Got it home-not one green pepper on the entire pizza- pepperoni over the whole thing and olives too. Who said olives? not us! I can't believe I put out $40+ for two unbelievably awful pizzas! They were delivered 90min after I called in the order, one of them had most of cheese stuck to the top of the box. The sauce was so thin and tasteless, the cheese looked like big blobs of white and the pepperoni was crispy like a chip. When I lifted out a slice all the cheese and pepperoni slid right off the pie into the box. God it was so greasy the dough was was under cooked. I normally never complain about this kind of stuff but this was pretty bad. The cheese was all congealed and grease was just sitting in the middle. The slices were not cut well at all. Used to come here all the time and it's been year since I've had some D'Amatos.. Unfortunately I won't be returning. I'm really big on customer service and today it's just been the worst. I ordered two spaghetti over the the phone for pick up. As soon as I started giving her my order, I had a feeling the outcome is not going to be good since she seemed confused or distracted when I said "two spaghetti for pick up." Anyway..Came, got my order, got in the car, and when I glanced in the bag for utensils, none. Came back inside, asked for utensils, lady in the front didn't even ask me if I want one or two. She just placed the utensils on the table and tried to leave and I had to ask for two. When I got home, I opened up my bag and only saw one spaghetti. I haven't been to the place in awhile so idk the cost per spaghetti. I called back and asked for the price, told her I ordered two but didn't realize I was only given one. She goes "but you only ordered one", I said "No I didn't I said two but thanks anyway." Her reply was "no problem." Really? You cannot call a customer 50 min after they order delivery and say they are outside of the delivery area. When the pizza is to be delivered within the hour. Not only did i not get what we ordered but you also charged my card before even confirming you would deliver to our home. My refund better be there the next business day. I liked that D'amato's isn't corporate, and they use fresh sausage, but I won't be returning. The crust tastes like cardboard, and the sausage pepperoni pizza we picked up was comically greasy. Poor Customer Service! 40 minutes after ordering a pizza for pick-up - the pizza still wasn't ready. I was assured that it would be ready at any moment. It took an additional 10 minutes for D'amato's to realize that my pizza wasn't even in the queue. After that, my pizza was made promptly. Since I had to wait for more than one hour for my pizza, I asked for a discount. My seemingly reasonable request was denied. Afterwards, my wife called to complain and was able to acquire future credit for a pizza. I wonder if our pizza credit will get lost also... I can understand that my order was misplaced. A quick correction, profuse apology, and an offer for a discount would have been the sign of a good business. Instead, I had to wait 10 minutes for them to verify that my order was not being processed and my wife had to call and demand a discount. Poor business management! read more

Love this spot! The workers look like they got stoned in the back alley before they made my pizza. It's a bunch of young kids looking like they're having fun at work. This place is yummy! And the workers are real and refreshingly chill. Way better than I was expecting. The toppings were under the cheese. And they sell out of the slices real early but the large is pretty big and cheap! So I suggest getting that. It took about 20 ish min for them to make so not too bad at all.
