This place falls victim to accommodating food to the American palate and forgets its roots and identity as a Szechuan/Mandarin cuisine it prides itself to be. In short if you are used to eating the auntehtic good Chinese food in Asia, you would probably find this place extremely disappointing, but maybe for first timers or those who don't understand the complexity and taste of Chinese cuisine from these Chinese region, you might think its great. Although the service was nice and really friendly, my reviews has to be objective about their taste, and to me their taste is not only lacking flavor but it also suffers from quality of ingredients used in their cooking. Their prices is also not cheap for a Chinese cuisine, but I don't have a problem with price, as long as the food is good, but when the price doesn't reflect the food, I have a problem. I ordered the Hunan Beef $10.45 to go, and to be honest it was just greasy and lackluster in flavor. It honestly tasted like was just tossed with plain soy sauce and some rancid oil, it was just so unappealing. The vegetables was also overcooked, and the beef was just too chewy from lack of using quality beef and trying to cheat with soaking it in bicarbonate soda, to make it appear all fluffed up and soft, I hate it when Chinese places do this, its fine to use a little, I know its part of marinating the beef to get it tender, but in excessive amounts it hurts the taste. It also had an old oil aftertaste, which made me stop eating after the first bite. I also ordered the Szechuan Shredded Chicken, $9.45, this dish was utterly rubbish and repulsive. It again had the aftertaste of rancid oil, the dish had no flavor whatsoever, tasted like poor quality soy sauce tossed with chicken and oil, plus the chicken was just rubbery and doesn't taste like chicken - I was sickened by the aftertaste of the dish. My biggest disappointment was finding out that they used canned chicken breast for the dish I ordered, that was just blasphemy. I can't believe they would even use that, I noticed the crumbly and rubbery texture, plus the box they put my to-go was in the daily chef chicken breast in water carton, so that kind of gave it away. I was in utter disbelief that a Chinese restaurant would use canned chicken breast for the dish. Overall I would not be back to this place, I would be crazy to come back after today, there is no excuse to mess up 2 dishes, if it was one , I would understand, but 2 dishes ? I was hoping this place would not mess up but it did, and it disappointed me beyond words. I do hope for their own sake they would improve on their taste and quality, or stop using Chinese food name in vain. read more

Nice folks and their place is one of the most clean I've been to in Fresno. Nothing is sticky or dirty, it smells clean and is. If it wasn't about food they'd get 5 stars. Ordered Kung pao lunch and broccoli beef lunch. Meats both beef and chicken are tough with small chunks of gristle. Sauces from both dishes tasted like mostly vinegar and fish sauce. Both dishes were so sour and fishey I could not stand to eat them and placed in garbage. Egg rolls had little to no filling whatsoever. Pot stickers seemed to have an extra thick breading that tasted so bad I didn't even try the meat filling. These to went in the garbage. In short the only edible food I received was white rice which I will save for fried rice. A while back a friend suggested D-Hou (Palm and Bullard) As we were driving home from running some errands I passed by and was reminded of her suggestion, so we stopped in for dinner. It was the best experience I've ever had at a restaurant! We have a 9 month old baby that is eating solids and makes a mess. We are very aware of the mess he makes and do our best to prevent it and clean up after. The waitress immediately told us not to worry about the mess that she would take care of it! She talked to our little boy every time she came to the table and suggested meals for us to try since it was our first time. When our first dish came out she brought a special soup that she put together just for the baby with all things he could eat! She even put ice in the soup to cool it down for him! When our main dishes came out, she cut the noodles in bite size pieces for him and even fed him a little so that I could enjoy my meal with everyone else and not worry about feeding the baby! As a mother who never gets to eat with everyone else, I truly appreciated how she treated all of us and my baby! I felt like I was at a family members house. On top of the service the food was great with generous portions and a great price! This will be a regular dinner spot for us now. If you haven't tried it, you should! Our first time here so we ordered "safe" & went with Family Dinner A for two. $12.95 per person. (menu photo) We had the VERY tasty sizzling rice soup, 2 egg roll appetizers (very hot, fresh & cut in half), garlic chicken, broccoli beef (both were very hot, fresh & *VERY* tasty) & average tasting white rice. We were seated right away @4:45 pm Friday. 3 other tables already eating yet Lynn, co-owner/hostess/food server, was extremely friendly & attentive. Reminded me of an aunt helping/urging me to eat & enjoy the food. We're not "foodies" but know great service and hot, fresh & tasty when we've had it. We showed Lynn her Yelp page and reviews and she loved them! She mentioned their style is Mandarin rather than Cantonese so I let Yelp know. There are very few Chinese places that know how to do Pan Fried Noodles right, and D Hou is one of them. Okay, backtrack -- D Hou is my grandma Betty's fave Chinese restaurant. Whenever the fam visits Fresno, this is her restaurant of choice to treat us to. On the last family visit (which I was not able to attend), everybody had been so impressed with an Eggplant dish; however this time they were fresh out of eggplant and the owner lady said there was none to be had locally. Bummer. Not to worry though, the rest of our selections made up for the lack of Eggplant: Shrimp with Snow peas (tender crispy peas, succulent shrimp), Sweet and Sour Pork (pork just crispy enough, and not too heavily breaded), Mushroom Chicken (this disappeared quickest), Beef and Broccolil (customized to my sister's order perfectly) and of course the Pan Fried Noodles topped with veggies and shrimp. Every dish was flavored just right, none of the greasiness that you sometimes get. I was suitably impressed. As I've said, Pan Fried Noodles is something not every Chinese place can actually do correctly but D Hou hit it spot on. The Pan Fried Noodle test is my Gold Standard of judging good Chinese food. Not soggy or greasy at all, truly pan fried just enough. WTG D Hou! Atmosphere was not formal, but everything seemed in good condition, clean and well tended. The decor was tasteful and didn't hit you over the head with too many over-the-top stereotypical Chinese motifs. A comfortable visit altogether. Some preverious reviewer complained that D Hou charged too much, but I disagree; it was very conservative.Maybe if you are used to eating in cheap dives you'd think D Hou's was overpriced. Let's just say it's good food, nothing spectacular or outrageous, just plain good food! No MSG (family member is deathly allergic and we would not eat there if they used it). So here goes the food critique: Probably best to order the Dinner A if there are several of you (sample of what we order below). My favorites are: Dinner A Sizzling rice soup (great for take out when you're feeling a little under the weather) Pot stickers Steamed rice (not a fan of their fried rice or chowmein, however younger kids seem to like the chowmein) Mu Shu Pork (boyfriend loves Mu Shu Duck, which you must order a few days in advance). Lemon Chicken (thin succulent and lightly breaded, not greasy at all, with an almost lemon meringue type of sauce, a little sour a little sweet) The dessert comes with the meal and it's a small piece of banana, dipped in a thick batter, deep fried and then glazed, it's crunchy on the outside and soft in the center. I'm not a big banana fan, but will sometimes partake of this.) We typically add an order of egg rolls on the side and we have tons of food left over! Their egg foo young (spelling?) is great, this isn't the stereotypical gravy, greasy, fare, it's almost like a light omelet filled with fresh veggies, such as broccoli, mushrooms, call ahead or ask for this right away it takes a while to prepare. Huge portion. D Hou is fabulous for a "non-fancy" family get-together. They have large tables that are available, with huge lazy susans to pass the food! Grandma to Grand baby will find something they like! You can also reserve the back room. For some reason I don't care for this restaurant for lunch. I didn't get a chance to read her review or else I would have tried doing take out instead, but since it was late and we were hungry, the fam and I decided to try this place. It's actually bigger than it looks from the outside. But on a weekend night, it was completely empty except for another couple, who were eating in silence for some strange reason. But the owner (?) greeted us cheerfully and led us to a table and was very helpful with the menu, etc. She was a very nice lady. We ordered some dishes that she recommended and went with it. But one thing stood out immediately. She is definitely a talker. Not that I mean she's full of it. I mean she doesn't stop talking. At all. And if we're coming out to dinner, we kind of want to spend some quality time together. Not together with her. Maybe she's lonely? Who knows. I don't think she was even aware of how distracting it was. I think maybe since it's her place of business, she just wants to keep her customers happy. But this is totally not the way to go. There were times when our mouths were full and she'd ask us a question. And the food. The food was not that good. The steamed rice was really dry and tasted kinda old. The beef and chicken dishes were a little bland and had too much sauce. And the prices were kind of expensive too actually. Some of the dishes that would cost about 7 or 8 bucks elsewhere cost 10 or 11 here. It was weird. But the phone was ringing for delivery and pick up off the hook so they were obviously doing something right. And it also seemed like they had a bunch of regulars. D'Hou Chinese Food Restaurant is the best deal in town for lunch! The food is quality all the way. You get soup, a spring roll and your entree for 7 or 8 bucks. You cannot go wrong on the menu. They will work with you to customize your dish as well. I score up the tangerine beef and they always know to crank up the spice for me! If you like egg drop soup, they've got ya covered. But they call it egg flour (flower?) soup. I can't recommend this place enough! D'Hou has a loyal block of regulars who go to eat there sometimes 3 days a week. The owners wife is probably one of the nicest people in the world, but that doesn't make the food any better.
