I had a lunch special with some brisket. Keep in mind, I'm a pescatarian and I was willing to sacrifice a bit with some of their famous brisket. Unfortunately, it was a waste of calories. We were told to seat ourselves and then they explained the lunch buffet. You picked from two entrees. Served with two sides, drink and a dessert. Plates are prepared and brought to your table. We both picked the burger. Had ham and a fried egg on top. I had the eggplant side. My companion had lentils. Both were flavorful and delicious. Portions generous. This place is a GEM. Just let the nice lady feed you. Don't ask what it is. Just eat it. The food is amazing, the standard fare a mix of Latin food that tastes like mom made it--because she did. Lunch, when I attended, was a hot bar, and you pretty much got whatever you wanted that she could fit on your plate--and then some. I got curry chicken, brisket, and AMAZING vegetable lasagna, with rice, black beans, yucca, and steamed vegetables. The plate was so heavy I had to carry it with two hands underneath! Then the owner walked over some citrus salad (on the house) and later a small truffle sized dessert (on the house) and call me mi amor the whole day, and I never wanted to leave. There are only a few limited choices and you don't get a menu or any idea what the prices are. She then showed us the food that had been prepared at the buffet. We were on the way from Mobile to Auburn, and we make it a point to only eat local on the road. We discovered D'Road Cafe on Yelp with many wonderful reviews. We stopped in and discovered the owner's Friday International Dinner. We learned that this is a reservation only event where she cooks for only 20 people. This evening she cooked dishes from Spain. The owner was so sweet as she was telling us that all of the food was gone and explained how the night works. She invited us to stay for the music, but we needed to eat get back on the road. She immediately said that she'd bring us something. She brought us a beautiful family plate of Paella. It was so rich in flavor and full of seafood. Stopped here after another restaurant and went serving breakfast. The place is very quaint. The owner is very friendly. Once she lays her Spanish on you, you're swept off your feet. My husband and I had decided what we wanted but on Fridays they have a hot bar. The hot bar didn't disappoint. Since we had to evacuate this was our first home cooked meal since leaving New Orleans. It did not disappoint. Dining here is like coming home to your mom's cooking -- great food cooked with love matched with unparalleled service. Janet, the owner, accommodated us even though it was almost closing. Our bellies and hearts were full after a "surprise me" lunch feast -- everything that she put on the table was great -- kid and adult approved. Everything was fresh and made from scratch. Found this gem sorta by happenstance. The ladies that were working (I think the owner) were super friendly and really accommodating to our group that was in a hurry. The food was fantastic.. very different.. but so tasty. The place is clean, bright and has lots of room. The owner was telling us how she does events every so often and picks a certain culture and makes their food. Very fun! Only downside is we felt like it was a tad expensive.. if you're on a budget I wouldn't recommend. Or just be aware that is around $18+ to eat for one person. read more

This was by far the best meal that I ate during my short time in Montgomery. We were a large group of about 15 people and we called ahead in the morning to tell them we would be coming and needed to eat quickly. They had everything prepared for us and we were able to get whatever we wanted to try from the buffet-- and it was all delicious! This restaurant is amazing, you must visit. I went here for a cooking class one night with friends and we had the best time. We were basically sous chefs, helping to create a Pakistani meal, yes, you heard me right and yes, this is a Venezuelan restaurant. The owner/chef, Janett, is that good. The food is all local, fresh and tastes fantastic. Aside from their standard menu and cooking classes, they also have other special nights for certain occassions. Arepas are a corn-fueled treat and the brisket breakfast option is a nice change from the everyday. We enjoyed our breakfast meal comprising of a variety of different menu items. The dining room seems like it was carved out of a larger space, albeit creatively. Bathrooms are weirdly funky, with the waterfall urinal (I think its a urinal) and the three inch thick lucite toilet seat. read more

One early Wednesday morning, I meet Janet at D'Road Café. She greets me in Spanish as she quickly finishes mopping and then proceeds to wipe down the counters and tables. "Quieres tomar un café?" she asks me through the flurry of activity. I decline coffee and at her recommendation opt for "jugo de kiwi", a simple smoothie with the sole ingredients being blended kiwis, ice and a dash of sugar, which tasted like the most delicious, creamy fruit smoothie. After heating up some homemade rolls for us, is Janet finally able to sit down for the interview A few days away from 60 at the time of the interview, Janet Malpartida is spry and vivacious, an animated speaker who fills our lively conversation with sharp wit and laughter. She was often in trouble as a child, "for talking too much," she confesses with a mischievous smile. When she was 12, her mother threatened to send her from their native Venezuela to the United States if she didn't behave, and so it came to be that Janet learned Americanized English while staying with her uncle in Chicago. She stayed just long enough to learn the language and some of the culture but soon returned home after the devastating 1974 earthquake in Caracas. As Caracas rebuilt itself, Janet continued her studies and eventually graduated with a degree in tourism from the Instituto Universitario de Nuevas Profesiones. Her reputation as an excellent tour guide led to a colleague contacting her about an opportunity to work on a cruise ship, taking care of every need of valued passengers as they sailed around the world. She agreed and turned a two-week internship (during which that same colleague attempted to illegally pocket her pay) into 14 years of dedicated and acknowledged service aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2, a 1,777 passenger ocean liner based out of Southampton, England, with regular transatlantic service to New York as well as world cruises. Janet found her calling, taking care of her clientele while gaining an invaluable education with 64 countries visited and countless experiences gained. She was prized so highly by her employer that on the rare occasion that she took off in order to take her mother on a 42-day cruise around the Mediterranean, the top brass at headquarters refused to let her pay. When her husband died in a plane accident, Janet took her baby daughter to Florida where she met her current husband of 10 years. They eventually settled in Montgomery where Janet had the vision of creating a coffee shop. Her dream became more solid when her brother, who had followed the family to Montgomery a year later, agreed to do the construction for D'Road Café while his employer did the plumbing and Janet the art and decoration. At the time she set up the coffee shop two years ago, her daughter was in 8th grade and home schooled, now she is at LAMP and looking towards college. Janet figured that, "maybe if I sell this coffee, maybe it will give me enough money for my daughter's future." One of Janet's biggest challenges financially is to reach her capacity of 24 customers everyday for lunch and dinner. Culturally, Janet notes that people who like fried food are disappointed with her healthy home cooked fare, as are those who can't wrap their head around the fact that neither she nor her food is Mexican. She says that some people who drop in don't want to experience new things: they think they that since they know one "Mexican" place, they know them all. Janet uses fresh herbs and sea salt in her cooking, always buys the freshest meat and produce and tries to buy food that is organic and responsibly raised. After two years of surviving with no money behind her, sometimes she wants to close: a large catering order cancelled for a small operation like D'Road Café can be suicide, but Janet holds on to her unshakeable faith. Little by little she has been putting her business together, slowly adding to the menu and while she can't say that she is currently turning a profit, all her equipment has been paid for and she makes enough to stay open. She does not worry and she will not fear; her family and her bible class at Frazier help her to maintain her conviction to stick with her dream. Eventually she is looking to relocate to downtown or Old Cloverdale where she feels her unique offerings might be better received. She wants a better location but not necessarily a bigger space: she is determined to maintain an authentic Latin environment where she can sit and talk to her customers, get to know their favorite order and create dishes for them off the menu. As one Yelper described it, D'Road café is like coming to your grandmother's to eat, if your grandmother was Venezuelan. One thing Janet would love to see in Montgomery is more encouragement and activities for younger people. She notes that old ways are on their way out, slowly but surely. read more

I thought this place was just okay. I got the crazy eggs, yet they didn't impress me at all. They lacked flavor and seasoning. The place had the look and and feel like it was going to be AMAZING. Needless to say, that wasn't my experience at allgh. On top of that the service was really slow. I'll give it to the staff though, they were very nice and friendly. How have I not reviewed this!? JUST DO IT! Janet is a talented cook and the warmest person; everyone is "mi amor". Every time I volunteer as tribute to go to Maxwell I stop here first to see what she is planning. Then I pick 2-3 nights to eat there that week. It's a limited menu; a few breakfast options, cafeteria style lunch, and dinner is whatever magic they've planned for the evening. I often go for weekend breakfast and hang for a couple hours to knock out email with intermittent coffee refills and chats with the owner. -sometimes she brings out samples of her latest tasty experiments! read more

This restaurant is located in downtown Montgomery and situated very close to City Hall. It is very clean and has plenty of seating. The ambience is comfortable and inviting. Interestingly enough, in one of the photos you'll notice that there are Italian chefs behind the counter; this seems to be a theme in Montgomery as several restaurants that we went to had them. We went on a Saturday morning so there wasn't a need for more than 1 person as wait staff. This does not mean the restaurant was empty, but the young lady that took care of us handled it well. She was very attentive and answered all of our questions with a smile. Now to the food, we had the Crazy Eggs Skillet and the Criollo. Both dishes were good but our eggs were overcooked. We also had coffee and a dessert very similar to a sopapilla. The coffee was good (but a little week) and sopapilla was absolutely delicious. If you were looking for a good Latin/south American breakfast we suggest this restaurant. read more

Upon first entering the restaurant noticed a sulphur water smell. Kind of like rotten eggs. I walked out and waited for my husband to pay for parking but our only other option wasn't appealing. We decided to give it a try because of the reviews and the warm greeting I received upon first entering the restaurant. I'm so glad that we decided to stay! This is a precious family owned restaurant with the nicest people. The coffee was phenomenal as well as the two homemade hot sauce. The owner came out after beginning to eat our fabulous breakfast and introduced herself and asked if we'd like anything else. She saw me putting more of her homemade veggie salsa on my plate and offered her other special hot sauce made with milk she kept in the fridge. I accepted and so glad I did. She told us that her family is chemical free and her coffee is her favorite and drinks it all day. It was delicious and I had three cups when I usually only have one or two at the most. The decorations are very nice with a comfy with an inviting atmosphere. Very clean and the ladies room was as well. We will stop again upon passing through. Such a great experience. read more
