Following a recent trip to Italy, I wanted to feel "Italy" again. So my coworkers and I decided to go here for happy hour. We left work early because it was the Friday before Labor Day. They told us to come back at 4:30 and so we did. We sat outside, ordered drinks and saw they had Carpaccio Di Bresaola on the menu which I had in Italy. It didn't disappoint. Me & my friend came here for dinner. Before we went I called the restaurant to make sure theirs room for us on a thursday night. I got there & the place is spacious, elegant & romantic. They sat us in a nice booth area. Our waitress explains everything about the menu & very helpful in suggesting some food that my friend might want because shes very strict about her diet. To start off, they gave us a complimentary bread with coconut spread. It was okay. Not that tasty because the coconut tasted so plain. Appetizer: charred octopus- yukon potatoes, olive tapenade. It was crispy exterior bits while the interior is tender. It has its unique flavor that I like. The potatoes on the side makes it more delicious. Food: Market green salad w/chicken--beets, radish, pear, papitas, cabernet vinaigrette. This is my friend's food. I don't usually eat salad for my main course but I tried a little of this & it was great! The chicken was very flavorful & all of the ingredients was fresh & crispy. Squid ink linguinne w/prawns-- so this is my food. Wow! I'm impressed. Big serving of food & all in this plate is delicious! The bar is stinky like that old sour beer smell and should have tipped me off. Bartender poorer beer and had to spill it a few times to clear the foamed head. Then ordered eggplant parm and it was apparent then heated up a frozen square of eggplant in the microwave. The cheese consistency was off and off and the eggplant rubbery. I am a long-time fan of Da Claudio, which is just around the corner from work. I think I've had nearly everything on their menu at some point, but I like their heavier traditional offerings like lasagna and eggplant parm. I can't recommend their desserts enough, especially the cannolis--delicious! These positives all apply to dining in, however. A while back I was in the area and ordered takeout to support a favorite restaurant. I regretted it. The lasagna and eggplant parm were both in these small takeout boxes and could barely be considered a serving. Dining in-house gets you big boat style plates with the dishes featured in the center and a nicely shareable portion, so it was surprising to pay the premium for both the lasagna and eggplant, but to still be hungry after we ate them. The Brussel sprouts portion (also the same size box) was generous and delicious. What really got me was the drinks, though! I wanted to add a couple of drinks, again to support a beloved restaurant. They ended up charging me $17 for a plain Negroni! Seriously? And the apperol spritz we got was similarly overpriced. I don't mind a $20 cocktail that is well crafted, complex, original and with great ambiance, but the cost here was ridiculous. I regretted ordering from there at all, but it was too late to cancel the drinks by the time I saw what they were charging. The takeaway is to not do takeaway. Wait til the crisis is over and you can join them in-house again. read more

Dependable new Italian restaurant that opened up near Fulton Street. Ambiance and prices are perfect for FiDi company lunches where meals generally are around $30, but not the Italian restaurant of choice for dinner dates when the area is dead and the food doesn't justify the trek. Came here twice for a company lunch. First time, we ordered the Prosciutto di parma with fresh fruit as an appetizer for the table. The prosciutto tasted good and was perfect for sharing even for a group of 5. I ordered the steak on a bed of puréed polenta as my entree, which must have been a special since it isn't on the regular menu. Despite being a tiny bit overcooked, my medium steak was soft and paired well with the purée and watercress on top. Second time around, I opted for the prix fix lunch for $25, which comes with a soup or salad, a pasta entrèe (unfortunately not all pasta dishes are included in this deal), and your choice of latte, cappuccino, americano or tea. Not that I had many choices to select from but I was glad to have ordered the Insalata di Rucola as my appetizer. The Caesar salad that someone else on our table ordered looked so plain that I couldn't believe how romaine lettuce with a couple of croutons and some sprinkled Parmesan cheese could cost $15 outside of the prix fix menu. Forget dreaming - there's no chicken in that salad. Insalata di Rucola, however, also consisted of simple ingredients but the dressing was everything. That lemon dressing was so light and refreshing at the same time; I couldn't stop eating it. It totally made the prix fix meal worth it for me. After hearing that the Carbonara last time was a little dry from coworkers, I opted for the Garganelli with wagyu bolognese. The pasta was very al dente and sauce was standard affair, but it felt like something was missing there. I simply didn't feel excited to finish it. I did finish it but was left craving something else. My coworker ordered the Calamarata, which had all different types of seafood and large thick cut pasta, but it was too salty for my taste. Unfortunately, our party opted not to get dessert...both times we were there (sad face). We just had our lattes and called it a day. However they have all the standard Italian desserts on the menu for those with a sweet tooth. read more

Da Claudio's is excellent every time eat-in or takeout. It has become and absolute favorite of my partner's and mine during quarantine. Owner is attentive and servers are effervescent. Starting at the bar, there are incredible cocktails and a very nice wine selection. The pasta is what I DREAM about though. I find myself craving the spaghetti carbonara and fusilli cacio e pepe with a side of their wonderful bread. Another favorite is the tagliata strip steak, always perfectly cooked to order. The restaurant has a nice rotating list of specials in addition to their solids. I hope the veal scallopini comes back soon! read more

Great restaurant option in the FiDi area for team lunches when you're sick of the same old mediocre sh*t and want to treat yourself (on the company's dime lol). The interior of Da Claudio is reminiscent of a brunch restaurant in the West Village combined with a classier restaurant in Midtown. The food is as good as you'll find in this area - not particularly noteworthy, but enjoyable. They have decent prix-fixe lunch menu for $25, which comes with select entrees, salad/soup, and a coffee. I've had the prosciutto plate with fruit before and it was solid. I've also had the Calamarata (seafood with lobster sauce) which was good, although salty. Great ambience, but food was very mediocre. The Fritto Misto was mostly vegetables and included very little seafood. It felt oily and the coating came off very easily. Definitely the worst dish I had tonight. I got the black linguine, which was mediocre. It felt like there wasn't a defining taste that popped in your mouth. It was almost just too bland and boring. Not something I would want at a restaurant. I was hoping to get a gluten free version of the black linguine, but the gluten free version doesn't come with the squid ink. The waiter told me that it would be penne. The location was highly rated, so I thought I would bite the bullet and get the black linguine (I'm not very sensitive to gluten). My partner got the gnocchi and she said it was too soft without much bite. Also, the sauce was not particularly flavorful. On our way, every restaurant we passed was empty until we got to where we were headed and they were full. We were seated pretty quickly and Stefano our waiter took over. We opened with octopus that was very good, tender, with a nice sauce. It had a wonderful grilled flavor with capers. The carbonara came with home made pasta, just a little al dante, and a very light sauce. The lasagna also came with home made pasta, a very flavorful bolognese sauce smothered in cheese. We finished off with a very light tiramisu, large portion and not overly sweet or drowning in coffee. The quality of the ingredients shown through from the beginning.
