Came here for dinner on a rainy evening and it hit the spot. My friend and I split a lot of the dishes- the wonton soup, shrimp steamed dumplings, chicken chow fun, and the sesame balls for dessert. Everything was pretty good, I liked the amount of bean sprouts in the chicken chow fun and the sesame balls were delicious! The waitress we had was great, she answered all our questions and provided us with some great recommendations. My only complaint is that it seemed like there were more options for lunch and not as much for dinner. For example, we tried to order the Chinese broccoli for a side but since we came for dinner, only the larger dinner portion could be served. This Chinese restaurant is absolutely disgusting! The chow mein and chicken rice we ordered were completely undercooked, and the chicken literally still had blood in it! A single rice bowl costs over $20 and tastes incredibly awful--a place like this would go out of business instantly in China. The service was also horrendous! We didn't leave a tip when we left (because they absolutely didn't deserve one). A server actually held up the receipt, went around asking each of us who didn't tip, and then had the nerve to call us "trash"?! I have never seen anything like this. I know tipping culture is out of control in the US and you usually feel obligated to tip, but I've never encountered a restaurant that forces a tip for terrible service and curses at you if you don't give one. I love visiting Da Hong Pao when I go to DC! It's on a busy street, so no issues walking in the area or taking the bus at night. The staff inside is super friendly. I'm always greeted when I come in and never have to wait long to pick up my order. Their dim sum is top notch in my opinion. No carts from what I can tell, which I normally prefer if I'm dining in. But I always order ahead and get my food to go anyway. Taro cakes, shrimp dumplings, and the duck and taro dish are my go-tos, but I'd love to try more next time I go! read more

The restaurant is the typical dim sum layout- plenty of round tables. No cart service, though. Per usual, the hostess sat me in the back. Ughh. I got my usual test items. Har gow, shrimp rolls, ribs with black beans, egg tarts, stuffed bean curd, shrimp stuffed eggplant and shu mai. Some items tasted old like the bean curd and eggplant. All the shrimp dishes tasted the same. Ribs were fatty with gristle. I didn't finish even though I expected to take some home. read more

We made reservations for a group of 12 and were seated right away. The staff was attentive and my water glass was never empty. It was a Saturday and the place was packed. Always a good sign. I'm used to eating Dim Sum so this review may seem a little picky. Overall the food was good....honestly no complaints. Dumpling skins were thin and fillings were generous and flavorful. There were a few items that were just ok such as the steamed ribs and tripe but overall you will not have a bad experience. I would probably give the food 3-1/2 stars. My one gripe is price. Good option for dim sum in DC. They have large tables so it's a good option for family get togethers. All the food I tried was really good but my favorite was the shumai. I love Da Hong Pao. The food is amazing, the place is clean, and the staff is on point--friendly and efficient. But seriously, they need to chill with some of their prices. I paid $29 for salt & pepper shrimp. They literally were bigger and cheaper last time I got them! I know Trump's economy is hitting hard, but have mercy. That said, I'll totally go back. The soup dumplings were not house-made as you can tell by the tops. Staying at the Washington Plaza Hotel Da Hong Pao was a short walk to the restaurant. The full glass exterior is very inviting and when we visited on a Thursday night for dinner, the restaurant was packed full of patrons. We did not have a reservation (not sure they take them) but were able to get a nice table. The selections for Dim Sum and/or Dinner are very good. We found our selections to be served as expected; hot, fresh and timely. Service was courteous and expedient and we found our food choices delicious. I enjoyed the shrimp and pork, noodle soups are very good, and chicken was very good as well. All very fresh. I'm from the west coast and ever since moving here I have been dying for real, delicious dim sum. This is the place to come. There's generally not a wait from my few experiences. They have a regular menu that's massive and a decent size dim sum menu. The price is fair and food is always fresh/hot. Service is always efficient and food comes out quickly. The ambiance is pleasant with a lot of families and clean decor. Restaurant itself is modern. Parking is a bit tough at times, so we tend to park in the neighborhood and walk to the restaurant usually under a half mile. Their chili oil is fairly spicy but I love spice. If you're not used to at least a 6/10 spice level, I would be careful. I half-expected Wilford Brimley himself to rise from the grave, point a quivering finger at my plate, and mutter, "Diabeetus". Then came the Lemon Chicken, a dish that should sing with citrusy brightness. Instead, it arrived as a soggy, neon-yellow tragedy, dripping with what I can only describe as liquefied gummy bears. A friend and I stopped for a quick bite of noodles at Da Hong Pao, and our order was excellent. Though the restaurant was almost full of satisfied looking customers, we were quickly seated and were asked within a couple of minutes if we were ready to order, which we appreciated. Service was quick throughout and the brightly lit atmosphere definitely added to the experience. We got the Singapore Noodles which were laden with shrimp, pork, scallions, onions, bell peppers, and more. The dish came out within ten minutes of ordering it and we appreciated the large portion size. The order tasted great and there was enough for us to take some home as well. Since it was late, we had the dinner menu instead of lunch (which I know can seem wrong to some people haha). The restaurant is quite spacious inside, and we got seated immediately. We ordered the beef stomach, pork and shrimp shumai, and tofu skin rolls from the dim sum menu. In addition, we got the seafood pan fried noodle from the larger menu since I was also craving those. The beef stomach was delicious -- great texture, and coated in a really good sauce. I also loved the tofu skin which were filled with veggies and coated in oyster sauce. The shumai was a bit underwhelming though, as the skin did not taste fresh and felt like it was just reheated. The seafood pan fried noodles were also pretty good, but definitely not the best I've had. For some decent dim sum and other Asian dishes, it's worth a shot if you're in the area! read more

I am fully blown away by how incredible the food was (and we got so so much food). I came here with a big group of about 12 for lunch without any reservation or call and they managed to find a table big enough for the whole group. We all got cozy and squeezed in around a huge circle table with a lazy susan in the center perfect for the feast that would soon take place. Lunch started with a few pots of tea on the table while we ordered. One person read out every menu item while everyone else shouted a very definitive "YUP" or "not for me" so we knew what to get and just how many of each. Our group consisted of vegans, pescatarians, folks who only ate chicken, etc. and everyone had plenty of options. There was so much food on the table, the hour or so we were there nearly left me unbuttoning the top notch of my jeans. (Wouldn't actually do that in public I swear but I was close). I can't recall the names of each, but here are some favorites from what I can remember: the fried squid (prepared very different from calamari, this was much softer and lighter), the egg tarts (they were so sweet and the crust there were in were buttery and flakey), the steamed bok choy (one of my dim sum favorites), the steamed shrimp dumplings, and the shrimp stuffed eggplant. I know I am forgetting a bunch but those were the standouts. come with a big group if you can so you don't feel bad about ordering lots of different plates. The shrimp dumplings were amazing. I loved the translucent noodle wrapper and steamed shrimp. I can only describe it as a bite sized little pillow of goodness. There were so many other dishes: the turnip cake, soy sauce pan fried noodles, steamed pork bun, baked roast pork pastry,pan fried golden chive dumplings, and vegetable spring rolls. They were all delicious. The service was excellent. The dishes kept coming out and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant was lovely. This is DC's jewel when it comes to authentic Cantonese Chinese food. Definitely recommend the following dishes: (1) Snow pea leaves with garlic; (2) Bitter melon with beef and black beans; (3) Salt and pepper shrimp without shells; and (4) Eggplant casserole with salted fish and chicken. I haven't had dim sum since my job's holiday party in 2015. YES, it's been that long, and it was a whole other era -- Ping Pong Dim Sum was still around! And it's crazy because I have walked by this place several times heading to U St from work... like, why have I never stopped in the place?! Some had meat, some had veggies... heck, one of them even had a custard in it (I forget the name though), but I enjoyed everything. As soon as we checked all the dim sums on the paper menu with pictures of dim sum, the food came out very quickly. The soup dumplings were delicious and we did order a second round to share. We also enjoyed a half Peking duck which was enough for the 4 of us to share. Our children didn't care for the flavor of the vegetable dumplings but one adult loved them and ate them all. The kids ate the entire fried plate of fried rice so it must have been good.
