The shrimp dumplings were okay but the meatballs tasted like spam, which personally is not my taste and not what I was expecting. The salted yolk custard buns were very good, but you can't really go wrong with those as I'm pretty sure you can get the exact same ones at an frozen food aisle in an Asian grocery store. Holy Dim Sum Heaven! Da Hong Pao hit the spot. We rolled up in a group of 12 people, not even having called ahead or, and expected to be separated into two groups. Miraculously, we were all seated at one table! We were given a paper menu and a pencil, so we could indicate the quantity for each menu item we wanted. Each menu item had a photo with it, which was super helpful. Our Dim Sum spirit guide for the day, Mike B., took the pencil and full responsibility for our food journey. He did not disappoint! While it would be easier to name the menu items we did NOT order, I have to shout out some favorites. The egg tarts, steamed pork buns, spring rolls, alllllll of the dumplings, YUM! I'm not a shrimp girl personally, but everyone raved about the shrimp stuffed eggplant. I am fully blown away by how incredible the food was (and we got so so much food). I came here with a big group of about 12 for lunch without any reservation or call and they managed to find a table big enough for the whole group. We all got cozy and squeezed in around a huge circle table with a lazy susan in the center perfect for the feast that would soon take place. Lunch started with a few pots of tea on the table while we ordered. One person read out every menu item while everyone else shouted a very definitive "YUP" or "not for me" so we knew what to get and just how many of each. Our group consisted of vegans, pescatarians, folks who only ate chicken, etc. and everyone had plenty of options. There was so much food on the table, the hour or so we were there nearly left me unbuttoning the top notch of my jeans. (Wouldn't actually do that in public I swear but I was close). I can't recall the names of each, but here are some favorites from what I can remember: the fried squid (prepared very different from calamari, this was much softer and lighter), the egg tarts (they were so sweet and the crust there were in were buttery and flakey), the steamed bok choy (one of my dim sum favorites), the steamed shrimp dumplings, and the shrimp stuffed eggplant. I know I am forgetting a bunch but those were the standouts. come with a big group if you can so you don't feel bad about ordering lots of different plates. A great choice for dim sum in the DC area. We had a group of 20 on a business trip. We made a reservation and our tables and food were ready when we got there. The food was very good and they offered a wide variety. My only complaint was that there were some conditions that could have been a little cleaner. The men's bathroom was out of soap and the dishes could have been cleaned a little better. The food was served hot and very yummy. One of my favorites were the egg tart with its creamy custard. The succulent squid and chili sauce were so tasty. I discovered the Malaysian sponge cake and it was a winner. Soft, moist, and a hint of sweetness, it really added another dimension to our meal. The shrimp dumplings were amazing. I loved the translucent noodle wrapper and steamed shrimp. I can only describe it as a bite sized little pillow of goodness. There were so many other dishes: the turnip cake, soy sauce pan fried noodles, steamed pork bun, baked roast pork pastry,pan fried golden chive dumplings, and vegetable spring rolls. They were all delicious. The service was excellent. The dishes kept coming out and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant was lovely. I haven't had dim sum since my job's holiday party in 2015. YES, it's been that long, and it was a whole other era -- Ping Pong Dim Sum was still around! And it's crazy because I have walked by this place several times heading to U St from work... like, why have I never stopped in the place?! tl;dr: I had such high hopes for this restaurant as a new go to place for dim sum since getting out to nova or Rockville takes so much time, but this was really disappointing. We ordered all my favorite foods (which did not come over via a cart even though a sign says so! The cart is like at least 25% of the experience), and I was disappointed by most, especially since it was extra pricey for being in DC. I will probably make the trek to Maryland or Virginia in the future for dim sum. The food aside, the decor and atmosphere is what I would expect at a dim sum restaurant with extras like a bar top (because DC). Tripe - 2/5: while not inedible, the tripe just did not taste fresh. It had like a freezer burn taste food acquires if you don't package it correctly in the freezer. Stomach - 4/5: This was one of the better dishes. It was very buttery and fatty. I wish the chili sauce they gave us a bit more spicier because I would've appreciated more kick, but the flavor was good. Cheung Feung - 3/5: This is my all time favorite dish, and it was just okay. The shrimp was a little over cooked, and there was this strange cinnamon taste that isn't usually in this. Not gonna knock off points for trying something new, but it wasn't for me. I was thinking it was either 5 spice or all spice. Har Gow/Siu Mai - 3/5: Lumping these two together because they are the sugar and spice of dim sum. They were just okay. Not as juicy as I was looking for. Felt like it had been sitting in a ware for a while instead of a steamer, which doesn't maintain the freshness as well. Stuffed Tofu - 3/5: Probably being generous on this, but while the flavor was there, the "stuffed" was one tiny shrimp. Im expecting much more stuffing when it comes to stuffed tofu! Tofu was good tough. Chive Dumplings - 2/5: This is my girlfriend's favorite dish, and they forgot about it until the end when we reminded them that we had 2 orders of this and char siu bao. And these were just very dry. I wasn't expecting them to be fried. Usually they are like har gow, but with chives instead. Sad thing was that it wasn't even crunchy and it was cold.... Char Siu Bao - 2/5: Very dry, warm, and also came out at the end, and felt like it had been sitting out waiting to be delivered. Soft tofu - 3/5: Flavor was there, but it was warm! This is supposed to be served cold in the summer as a cooling dessert style dish since it's so soft and also sweet. Da Hong Pao is a large dim sum restaurant which also serves other Cantonese dishes. Dim sum is not limited to brunch/lunch, it is available all the time. They give you a dim sum menu where you can check off what you want. No carts here. The food is a hit or miss. The portion size is a bit small while the prices are high for what you get. Service wasn't very attentive. We had to wave down someone several times to get our water refilled. We had the shrimp dumplings, yi mein with mushrooms, and fish with walnut in a golden nest. The shrimp dumplings and yi mein was very good, but the portion of noodles was small. If you never had yi mein before, give it a try! The dish might sound boring and plain but the noodles are delightfully chewy! The fish with walnut in a golden nest (fried noodle bowl) was disappointing. The fish is fried and the sauce used is the same one as the walnut shrimp dish. The fish was a bit too salty, the sauce was a bit too heavy, and there was no walnuts to be found. One of my favorite places in DC for dim sum. I have missed out on a couple of times because I did not time it well. The wait could be an hour if you show up during peak lunch hour. So we mostly come here around 10:30 am to enjoy some of our favorite dim sums in DC. Some of my favorites include shu mai which is a combination of port and shrimp dumpling, roast duck is my absolute favorite (best in the area), shrimp and rice dumpling, fried pork dumpling, I have had chicken feet (not my favorite, definitely recommend trying it), spring rolls and shrimp steamed dumpling. Service could be a hit or a miss. They are always running around so they look very impatient and won't answer any of your questions. I recommend googling it if you don't know what their food item on the menu are. Price is alright. Good for 4 people. You might end up spending $20 each for a nice meal. read more

I've had my eye on this place for a long while, and today we finally made it! We started with the dim sum and I was very pleased with the chicken feet. They were savory and soft. The sticky rice was excellent and soup dumplings were okay (not pictured). My primary complaint was that they were kinda dry on the outside as if they had been sitting around a while. The shrimp stuffed eggplant came out of the fryer like liquid hot magma! But was so dang good, especially with the slightly spicy chicken feet sauce. By this time I was pretty full but my wife had only eaten soup dumplings so she ordered our favorite vegetable, sautéed pea shoots and then crispy beef. We loved the pea shoots, but I couldn't eat much. The crispy beef was too sweet for me, however she liked it. We finished with our favorite egg custard buns and then I decided I had to try the egg tarts. The buns were too sweet for me, but she loved them. Where's the tarts tasted surprisingly like scrambled eggs with a glazed top and I actually liked it because it was barely sweetened. Overall, service was fast and responsive. They checked on us frequently and continued being responsive even after a huge party of more than 30 trickled in. Their menu is massive. I recommend starting with some dim sum (dumplings) since they're fast and delicious appetizers and you'll need time to dig through the main menu. read more

Found Da Hong Pao and liked the way the pictures showed of the restaurant interior. We wanted everything form the dim sum menu but by dinner time some items were sold out (like the much desired fish balls; thus replaced with aforementioned beef balls) We knew Da Hong Pao was known for its dim sum. My favorite dishes that I tried were the shrimp crepes, shrimp balls, siu mai, and sticky rice in banana leaf. My friend and I ordered their turnip cake, beef noddles, eggplant dish, shrimp dumplings, chive dumplings, shrimp shumai, beef with rice noddle, and soup dumplings! First, I was a little surprised their soup dumplings were $9 for just 4 of them...they were okay but I would have liked to pay less or get more for $9. They don't do any more carts service but the food still comes out nice and hot. Service was efficient, but strange that the server didn't ask to see if we wanted tea. Top tier Chinese foods in the DC area! Our second time here and the food was expectedly delicious!

Delicious dim sum right here in DC! If you love dim sum, or want to try it, you won't go wrong with Da Hong Pao! Their dim sum menu is worth it. They get pretty packed by 11 so I recommend coming before that. The bbq pork buns are my favorite: soft bread with flavorful bbq pork filling. Another great dumpling here is the fried pork balls. For dessert, order the pineapple cream buns and the sesame balls - they go perfect with your hot tea! Some of the items are inconsistent, such as the shrimp balls which on some days are delicious but on other days are over-steamed causing the wrapper to melt. And some items you would expect to be good just aren't: such as the shao mai (they call it the steam pork and shrimp dumpling) which is under-seasoned and kind of gummy. Make sure you ask for a container for your soy sauce (a little sauce plate) because they will not give you one without being asked. They expect you to pour your soy sauce directly onto your plate, but you can't properly dip your dumplings like that. The waiters seem overworked, which makes the service pretty terrible. Granted, it's a dim sum restaurant, but still, the service is subpar. They often forget to give you soy sauce: so make sure you ask for it in the beginning (one time we had to ask four times before they finally brought ours). The waiters are always frantically running around and when you try to get their attention they often put their palm in front of you and just walk off. It's a mess. This place would really benefit by serving dim sum Sundays cart side. It would make the job for the staff much easier, as they would not have to be running all over and forgetting items, and you would be ordering based on what they have available. It would also pull in more customers, as cart side dim sum is fun and having aggressive staff when it's cart side is a positive and memorable experience. They also desperately need Chinese black vinegar (I've asked - they don't have it). That's just necessary, as a good dim sum dipping sauce needs soy sauce and vinegar. It makes such a difference that I actually bring my own bottle. Overall, worth visiting. Not the best dim sum, but still pretty good. read more

Da Hong Pao is a spacious Chinese dim sum restaurant - one of the very few you can find in DC. I would recommend going to dim sum with a group to try out all the different dishes. Price-wise the dishes can really add up but when split amongst a group it makes for an affordable, delicious, and filling meal. The dim sum menu comes with images so you know what you're ordering. My group and I had the various dishes like turnip cake, ha gow, siu mai, egg tart, fried shrimp ball and salt and pepper squid. All of which were really delicious. I would consider the salt and pepper squid to be a standout - it was really crispy and well-seasoned. There didn't seem to be any dim sum carts going around, all of our dishes were delivered to the table. Service is really fast and the food was all served warm/hot. Really good dimsum place! I was looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant that served dimsum on my most recent trip to DC. Da Hong Pao already gave me great expectations when I walked in and saw the staff, decor, and ambiance. During COVID, they had me write my name and contact information down. I assume if there is exposure, they would contact that list. We were immediately seated arriving on a Saturday morning at 11:30am. We were given a menu to fill out and they had pictures which really helped my date. We wanted to try a little bit of everything so we ordered a fair amount of food. Decently priced, especially for DC, each item was about $5-6. Besides dimsum, they also have chinese bbq so we tried the roast pork and the soy sauce chicken. Just wow. All of it was amazing. I noticed they had a limited dimsum menu that didn't include sticky rice, but it was still a great selection. They have silken tofu soup which is a sweet dessert and dimsum places rarely have that so I was definitely in for a treat when I saw it. They started to get really packed and the tables are all somewhat close together. They also have outdoor seating. I particularly loved how fast they brought the food out. Currently this is the only go-to for legit and good dim sum in DC proper (there are rumblings that we'll have some serious competition soon, but until then, due to its sole status, this place is already an institution). While nearly everything here was great, I need to note that the egg custard buns are worth ordering, especially as a meal finisher. We were visiting our son in DC Friday and decided to stop by Da Hong Pao for dim sum. We were there around 11:15 and was shown to a table. A waiter came by to take our order. Immediately we sensed something was not right, based on his body language and his way of greeting us. Either he had a bad night before or something else, he didn't seem to want to serve us at all. He really had a bad attitude the way he answered our questions. We order tea and was told there was only one choice: Oolong Tea. After he brought us tea and we were reading the menu and found there were 4-5 choices. We asked him over and why he told us there was only Oolong Tea available. I loved the vegetables. I loved the pastries. All very flavorful!!! The one thing I did not love was the fried rice. It just wasn't very fried. This was the absolute worst Chinese food we have ever eaten. Full of MSG, cold soup, unrefined fried rice and disgusting eggplant. The service was horrible with the waiter stating that the slimy stuff in our eggplant dish was not a mushroom because mushrooms are too expensive; however, it clearly was a wood ear mushroom and tried to say it was a lily flower so he lied. When I told him we didn't like the dish, he did not take it back. The ambiance was terrible as well. Restaurant too hot and the waiter almost tossed the dishes on our plate. At that point we stopped eating, asked for the bill and paid. We did not eat the food and given his terrible attitude we did not feel compelled to give him much of a tip. He proceeded to walk over to the table look at the tip he was given and demand that it be changed to at least 15%. Unbelievable - he was lucky to get a tip at all.
