We try to make it here when back in Cali. Our favorite style of Hủ Tiếu Dai Đà Lạt Đặc Biệt kho (for me) Mì & Dai w/soup (for him). It's been several years since we've been here so we did notice a couple changes. Guessing the original owners that opened it few decades ago have now retired. Current owners seemed very nice on our last visit. For the most part the main hu tiếu dish is about the same, but the dry "soy style " sauce that accompanies the dry version of hu tieu is now too sweet, for my taste, and not of the same flavors of fried shallots/garlic that I remembered and loved. I alway used to order the dry version, but after a couple times with this version of the sauce, I'll be ordering the soup version next time. One other detail I remembered long, long ago was that the Special Dac Biet version came with a crab claw. That is no longer available or included, just the jumbo shrimp. read more

I went in for a to-go order and it's definitely a mom and pop shop. It felt a little like I was visiting my grandparents but I was the least favorite grandchild. I got the seafood pho with rice noodle and fried chicken with tomato rice. I think the tomato rice was ok and the chicken was a little bland, it also didn't come with the gravy I was used to with Vietnamese fried chicken. The seafood pho was the star of the show. We were visiting the children's discovery museum and wanted some vietnamese food nearby and a friend recommended this. It's definitely a hole in the wall. Located in a random neighborhood with no clear sign when you're driving by. Graffiti on the awnings. Parking is nearby in the neighborhood. Luckily we found a spot not too far down the sidewalk. WAIT: Came on a Saturday at 11:30 and got seated right away for a group of 8. The place was pretty filled but it didn't seem like people had to wait. ATMOSPHERE: the inside has not been updated in a long time but I guess for this type of place it doesn't need to. It's lively inside. FOOD: Got the Hu Tieu Da La Dac Biet in two forms. You can get it with soup or dry. I think the dry style is more popular but I got it with soup for the kids. I'm not sure what the "special" means since I didn't see the regular version but it comes with jumbo shrimp, pork and tofu thinly sliced. They give you a good amount of meat. The noodles are a clear, glass noodle and have a good chew to them. I liked the change in pace from typical pho. For the dry version they give you a sauce which tastes like fish sauce, oyster sauce or hoisin sauce, soy sauce etc. It's a brown color and is good to coat your noodles in and mix up. It was also a little sweet. Overall, good, I liked the dry version. The soup version is pretty much the same but no brown sauce and the soup has more of a seafood clear broth taste than typical pho. No star anise or other typical pho spice flavors. The meat was kind of dry but it's the type of "white meat" pork they serve. Pay at the front. Overall, a good option if you want something other than pho and want to try Hu Tieu. read more

This is one of the OG Vietnamese restaurants in downtown San Jose. My go-to for chicken pho is Pho Tau Bay on Senter, but I hadn't been to DaLat in 20+ years and decided to give it a go. Chef may have been a touch heavy with the MSG, but the broth was clean and strong, and the chicken breast was plentiful. Lots of fresh basil to add to the bowl as I went. Washed it down with a refreshing so da chanh (homemade lemon soda). The place wasn't particularly busy on a late Monday afternoon; but the customers at the two other tables were all Vietnamese, which I took as a good sign. It has been almost 18 years or so since I tried this spot last. The interior and exterior looks like it's been frozen in time. Not completely a bad thing but this place can benefit from a light refresh. Parking can be challenging and on this particular day, it looked like the wild Wild West out front. Patrons were parked on sidewalks and "made up" parking spots lol. We luckily found parking across the street pretty easily. There was plenty of seating for our party of 5 and a baby. We dined in the day after lunar new year so it may have been busier than a normal Wednesday lunch. The gentleman who took our order was efficient and informative. We asked about combining different style noodles in one bowl etc. He was quick to take our orders and the food was delivered shortly after. The accompanying herbs of Chinese celery, quick blanched (your choice of fresh or blanched) bean sprouts, sliced jalapeños and lemon wedges were abundant. Overflowing off the plate really. I appreciate a mountain of herbs and greens to accompany my noodle soups. The shrimp in the soup were ginormous and the protein was plentiful. The broth is flavorful and clean. The combination at Dalat wasn't for me personally. My friends that were with me enjoyed it, but to be the soup was bland and the noodles were flat and mushy, almost overcooked. I've been coming here ever since I was a kid and this place still holds a good place in my heart and tummy! My go-to is the combination tapioca noodles but the dry version with the soup on the side. I'm rating my food off my door dash experience. Hu tieu noodles are good but really clumped together. I wanted to eat my noodles dry version but couldn't do it because of how stuck the noodles were to each other. I ended up pouring the soup in to make it a noodle soup and finally the noodles were able to be separated. Soup itself was bland and I had to add a lot of spice and even the sauce for the dry noodle. We came here right when they opened and we were the 2nd table being served while they were putting together a large togo order. Staff was friendly and they accepted credit cards. I ordered the non dry Hieu Tieu with regular noodles and the BF ordered the wet with clear noodles. The prawns were huge, portions were generous even for the small size, broth was flavorful, meat wasn't dry tasting, and the noodles had a nice chewy bite to them. This has always been a place of mine, ever since my childhood days. Their food is always delicious, nothing really has changed - maybe owners? I'm not sure. I always get #46 or #48, both w/ clear noodles. That's the best IMO. I've tried their regular white noodles w/ it, just no reason and it tasted horrible. Would not recommend. Whether or not you decide to dine in or do take out, the food quality is still 100%. There's also a supply chain issue w/ crabs so unfortunately, they have replaced that w/ shrimps. Not a huge fan...but it'll do for now. Service is really not the best, but I don't think that's all of a surprise. Parking can be a hassle. They have a few spots available on the side of the restaurant, and I've seen a few cars literally parked right next to the window...parallel parking that is. Weird. Other than that, you can do side street parking nearby. Restaurant is outdated and not the cleanest but if you're looking for a good hu tieu place, I highly recommend it. read more

I've been eating at Da Lat Restaurant since the early 90s and the Mi and Hu Tieu noodle soup and dry noodle bowls set the bar for how these bowls should be prepared. My favorite is always the Mi/Hu Tieu Kho, dried noodles with both rice noodles and egg noodles. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
