I still work from home. I find it ironic that I find myself ordering out more because I don't have the time to cook. It was my evening w/ Tess so I already knew I had to select Asian cuisine. I was already craving goi ga so we decided to order via DoorDash when I picked her up so that we wouldn't have to wait long for our meals to be delivered. I ordered Gavin the rice plate, Tess ordered the vermicelli, and I ordered the chicken salad. I can't comment on the kids' dish but my chicken salad was very refreshing. The nuoc mam was a little on the sweet side but it paired well once poured over my crisp cabbage and boiled chicken. I used to come here when I was a kid but I have not been here since I became an adult. I just generally do not crave rice or noodles but it was a nice experience from the way our entrees were packaged down to the delivery made by DoorDash. Been going here for many years for its well known special seafood clear noodle soup! It's tucked in a quiet San Jose neighborhood right by SJSU. They used to have the crab claw in the dish but now they substituted with another jumbo shrimp. The pho is still very solid and it's the only dish I usually order whenever I'm here. I believe the pho was around $16. Which is not your cheapest pho place but at least there's lots of ingredients. Service was prompt. We had the hu tieu dac biet, (around $15) and a combo crispy noodles $16. The hu tieu was OK. The soup weren't all that. It needed more bone in the broth. The combo crispy noodles was rough. It looked good but didn't taste great. First, the noodles were overcooked giving it a stale crunch. Too rough. The gravy was too watery. The toppings were a mishmash of meats, seafood and vegetables. We used to patronize this restaurant more frequently and then stopped going for awhile since we didn't feel like making the long drive from the Peninsula. Got a chance to eat takeout again recently and once again have their Hu Tieu Da Lat and got one dry and one wet. The dry one we got with egg noodles and the wet one we got with rice noodles. They definitely increased their prices and sadly, as many Yelp reviewers have reported, they no longer serve the crab claw with it and instead replaced it with an extra jumbo shrimp. The dry version comes with a sweet sauce that tastes very similar to hoisin sauce. The wet one comes with a clearish broth that's heavy on the shrimp flavor. Without the crab claw, it tastes more similar to the stuff you'd get at other restaurants. Parking is very limited in Downtown San Jose and the area can be quite sketchy so I would only recommend going during the daytime. In fact, given the way the food is now, it's only okay and not a must go in the Bay Area. read more

Dalat has always been a personal fav of mine. This restaurant is located in DTSJ with very limited parking but you could snag a spot on the street if your driving skills are ninja enough. I've tried most of their popular items and would say #45 and #46 are too legit to quit. If you're dining in, I would suggest ordering the noodles "dry" meaning the soup would get served separately. My friend recently took me here and I've been back at least another 5 times since. She couldn't believe that I grew up in San Jose, but never ate here before. Love the food, but don't love the location. Every time we come here, I'm worried that our windows would get smashed or we'd get mugged or something. But, the food is so good, we keep coming back despite those factors. I'd probably frequent it more if they had a different location. Parking is less than ideal (typical downtown parking situation) so be ready to parallel park and walk a bit. Like most of San Jose, lots of homeless hang out around here. It's a total hole in the wall, but those places always serve the best food. I always get the Hu Tieu Dalat Dac Biet Kho/Dry with the 2 big prawns and it's always delightful. I do like that they offer a variety of different noodles, however, I always opt for the rice noodles. A lot of my friends seem to like clear noodles, but I've personally never been able to stomach them well. The assortment of meats that you get inside the dry noodles, is generous and I love the variety of cha that they include. I love the bowl of broth accompanying the dry noodles. Unlike other places, the broth actually tastes good, more than just some watery and salty MSG broth. The sauce for the dry noodles is savory and delicious so don't forget to add it! I always say that I will try something different like the Hu Tieu Nam Vang or something else on their large menu, but when I get here, I always get the same thing since I like it so much. Some of the smaller details I noticed is that when you ask for cooked sprouts, extra veggies or extra lemon/lime, they're not stingy. I love my dry noodles with a lot of acidity and other places seem to only give you 1 or 2 lime/lemon wedge even when you ask for extra. Their Thai iced tea is also good here since it's not the instant powder type that you'd expect from many Vietnamese restaurants cutting corners. We usually order it in togo cups so that we can finish it on the road. We will definitely be back for more! read more

We arrived around 1:15 PM on a Friday and they were packed! Parking here kind of sucks. It's either street parking or their parking lot where you could get boxed in by cars parking behind you. They have a pretty extensive menu. This time around we ordered #45 (hu tieu dai da lat), #46 (hu tieu dai da lat dac biet), and oc len xau dua. 45 and 46 were very similar on the menu, 46 was just dac biet, but I think 46 was just the bigger size. I'm always on a hunt to find me a good bowl of Hu Tieu Dai [chewy clear tapioca rice stick noodles]. With Dalat being widely known for their Hu Tieu Dac Biet bowls [translated as: special rice noodle soup] I was over the moon about coming in. Save yourself some grief and find street parking along the business. There are a few limited parking spots located on the tiny "driveway" of the restaurant but those fill up fast and drivers are not courteous at slaying in the lanes. My guy and I arrived to a full house with 3 other parties standing around already waiting to be seated. There was about a 10 minute wait before we got seated- this place doesn't mess around when it comes to the turnover rate. We place our order for: Goi Cuon- shrimp and pork spring rolls with fresh veggies. peanut dipping sauce accompanied. Hu Tieu Da Lat Dac Biet [regular rice stick noodles] Hu Tieu Dai Da Lat Dac Biet [clear chewy tapioca rice stick noodles] Spring rolls were a letdown. The rolls were messy and it was obvious that the entire process was rushed. The peanut sauce was watery and didn't taste good so we ended up dipping the rolls in hoisin & chili. Hu Tieu bowls were good in size and although they were good they were not the best. I didn't like how the noodles were all bunched up in a little tight brick making it hard to mix. Today was my second time here. The first time was back in January and I had the Hue Tieu (dry) to go. Today, I dined in with my bf and his friend. I ordered the hue tieu (dry) with egg noodle. It was a lot better this time because I got to eat it while it was still hot. The hue tieu was super good! They gave us crushed fresh red chili peppers and sauce to drench the noodles in. The noodles came with a good amount of meat - including two jumbo shrimp and a fresh crab claw. The soup on the side was super flavorful! I wish they gave me a bigger bowl :P the price was very reasonable for what you get. One of the best hue tieus in SJ for sure! It is a hole in the wall. And they do look "ghetto", but they're good!! Noodles are our favorite breakfast food on the weekends. I remember going to Dalat as a child with my parents but have never been back since. Wasn't sure if they were still good but I had a huge for craving hu tieu dai -chewy clear noodles and I was tired of going to our usual spots for noodles (Yummy Trieu Chau, Nam Vang, China Chen, Pho Hanoi..etc). I would repeatedly suggest this place to my boyfriend on a weekly basis but his response was always, "that place is hella expensive!" or "you know how much they charge for a bowl of hu tieu??" ..but he finally gave in to me because he got tired of searching for a new spot and didn't want to hear it anymore.. so we were off to Dalat! (yay!) Dalat has mainly street parking with a few designated parking spots. There are signs that say "Dalat Parking Only." It shares it with an adjoining apartment building. The surrounding area is run down and the restaurant is SUPER HOLE IN THE WALL. It's grimy and gives me old school asian movie vibes from back in the 80's. Red chairs, peeling tables and sticky everything..it just looks like it needs a good deep cleaning. It has been alive and standing for over 40 years though..renovation time, maybe? lol. But hole in the walls are usually the best kind right? My boyfriend and I both ordered.. #45 HU TIEU DAI DA LAT $10.95 -clear noodle soup with jumbo shrimp, crab leg and meat. I got this khô or dry style. It also came with thin slices of fried pork ham, which was a nice surprise, and a small bowl of extra brown sauce on the side. The noodles were a little too soft for me, I wanted them chewy noodles but oh well. I seasoned it with more brown sauce (tasted like a combo of hoisin and soy sauce), lime juice, chili sate, a little sriracha and tossed in some chopped chinese celery. I usually don't finish my bowls, but I couldn't stop eating theirs! YUM. CHAO QUAY $2 -chinese crullers. Perfect side for hu tieu. I like to toss a few pieces in and mix it with the sauces from the noodles or the side soup to soften it up. It'll soak up all that goodness! Dalat's isn't the best we've had but at least it wasn't stale or tasted like old oil. They also offer pho, mì (egg noodle), com dia (rice plates), com gia dinh (family style dinner), lau (hotpot), vegetarian dishes and various appetizers. *FREE ICE CREAM for kids *BEER BUY 1 GET 1 FOR 1 CENT everyday *GIFT CERTIFICATES available *CREDIT/DEBIT CARD accepted, which is a big step up from a lot of the other noodle places. It's a short walk away from SJSU, so my girlfriend and I would visit Dalat often last year. It's a great place that's stood the test of time. The hu tieu dalat is their signature entree and what I got this time. They don't have include crab claw anymore but it's still a great dish. I order it dry, and when the soup comes out toss the jalapeño slices into it, then add them into the hu tieu when they soften a bit A close second is their bo luc lac. They include pickled vegetables w/ this dish, something that most other restaurants choose to neglect. 9/10 read more

I was craving dry rice noodle with a side of soup and their #48 fulfilled that craving. I got the Dac Biet which was way more than I could stomach. Didn't care for the two jumbo shrimp because they felt too firm, over cooked, and chewy. I also ordered the 3-colored bean drink #15 which should have had coconut milk in it (just as the menu indicated). But when I tried it, to my dismay, there was no coconut milk. They put half & half cream, instead, which totally makes this dessert drink taste different. I preferred coconut milk but they said they didn't have anymore. I wish they would have told me upon ordering it, that they ran out of coconut milk...instead of waiting for me to notice and say something. Solid viet spot. Hu tieu seems to be their specialty. My friend got one and said it was pretty good. I tried the pork and shrimp fine vermicelli. The vermicelli is thinner and separated into squares and I believe pan fried a lil bit to keep the shape and give it a lil crisp. This location and the one in Milpitas are my go-to spots for anything Hu Tieu. For $15 including tax, you get a huge hefty bowl of noodle soup topped with pork, chicken breast and two shrimp. The cool part about this place is that we once ordered a bowl without shrimp, which they have always compensated by providing more of the other meat! That's right! My mom has a severe allergic reaction to shrimp, this evening I tried to order a #47 WITHOUT shrimp or broth and they brought out the noodles with shrimp. When asked to remake it the guy went behind to the food area and I saw him use his bare hands without washing them (after dealing with money, we had paid prior) and take out the shrimp. Have been coming here for years. My introduction to Vietnamese food was here and I was fortunate as you will be hard pressed to find fresher, more vibrant, authentic flavors and dishes available than here. I find that a true snapshot of a restaurant, especially with ethnic food, is if you see people of the same culture frequenting the restaurant as to me it signals good food, and you overwhelmingly see this here, day in and day out here. A little grittier area near San Jose State, not a shined up business complex or next to a chipotle, but a very good, authentic restaurant that will absolutely fill your Vietnamese food cravings. I took my two tech friends here today. My one friend has now accompanied me 5 times here. He always gets the seafood pho. My other buddy today had the dry pho with broth on the side, For me it's always the lemon grass chicken with egg rice (they cook the egg in the rice).. The spring rolls are also a must have.
