This has become my go to place when going to the Shark Tank. I may not be Vietnamese, but i eat a ton of soup during the colder seasons and really enjoy the pho here. The service is very friendly, the place is clean and the soup and broth are excellent. I generally get the #2 although when in the mood I go for the tripe. I also prefer egg noodles to the rice noodles but you can get either. Really conforting on a cool evening. The hot sauce is that.. hot so use wisely. The flaming plantain dessert is very good as are the spring rolls. Bring cash, you won't get a bill and will need to walk to the counter to pay. I only have Pho here when I get to San Jose ..believe me the pho here is the best ..just the taste of the broth is different from the cookie cutter pho place that is around SJ. Very good traditional Vietnamese Noodle Soup. The restaurant is crowded most of the times so I usually have to wait for a few minutes before seating. Their best dish is definitely Pho Bo. But they also have some great dishes as well. Try Bo Bun Xao, Bun Thang and definitely the Fried Banana Desert, it's really yummy. I've been coming here every so often since I was about 10. It's a hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant that takes cash only with no ATMs available inside. Parking can be a pain. I do have to say that they desperately need remodeling done. It's tremendously dirty and grungy looking and you have to go up this ancient old narrow stair case to get to their claustrophobic bathroom, BUT.. I do have a loyalty to this restaurant for one main reason: their #14 on the menu. (I'm not Vietnamese so I don't know the correct name) but it's basically deep fried pho noodles topped with beef and vegetables. I've tried finding this dish at other Vietnamese restaurants, but none can compare to how good they make it here. For as long as this restaurant remains open, I will always come back solely for that #14 that I crave every now and then! read more

The Pho Dac Biet (#2 on menu) was so good that I finished off a large including all the broth. The broth was wholesome and went down easy unlike the broth in most Pho's that are MSG laden. Today at 1:30pm, I walked into Dac Phuc Restaurant, asking for food to go. A short women with short black hair, pointing to a stack of burgundy menus, located next to the service table. She told me to choose what I would like to order. I decided on the #4, yellow noodles, barbecue pork and shrimp. I gave the women my order and she asked me to sit and stated it will take 5 mins. About 7 minuets later, a taller gentlemen called me over, stating my food was ready. He left my food on the counter and a short, somewhat balding older man behind the counter stated I owed $11.95 for my meal. I told him this was not the case due to the burgundy menus stating the price was $8 before tax. He then told me I was wrong and pulled out a paper menu from behind the counter. He said there are two menus. One for those who eat at the restaurant and those who order take out. He said due to it being take out, it was more expensive. I then told the man, I wanted what was stated on the menu. I pointed to the lady with the short hair, stating she gave me the burgundy menu and told me to order from it. I said, she never stated there was a separate menu. He said she was new and didn't know what she was doing. I told him, that is incorrect because I was here 3 months ago and she was my server. He then starting pointing to the taller gentlemen, saying "Him, Him!" I said no and kept pointing to the women with the short hair. He then started to get upset, raising his voice at me stating, you have to pay these prices because to go orders are larger. I know this is not true because looking at both menus, they do not specify size. I also looked at my food and there was no size difference. It was the same from when I ordered three months ago. He then asked me if I wanted my food or not. I told him yes but for the price i was originally quoted. He then said, " Well, you seem unhappy!!" " Do you want your food or not!!" I'm not one to waste food and also I was hungry so I handing the man my card. He wouldn't even take it, looking me up and down. I told the man, just take the card, I'll pay it. He still wouldn't take my card, still arguing. He finally took my card, then said he would give me a discount. I paid $9.83 for my food. I left no tip and I walked away. Now, I'm in the service industry and I understand the importance of rate integrity. This place dose not have rate integrity and will charge you how they see fit. The man was trying to cheat me and then became upset when found out. I personally feel it's my obligation to out this business. Please do not eat here. read more

Average pho joint. Great location downtown near the clubs (to sober up), which helps, but everything seems a bit dirty and the quality of the food isn't top notch. I ordered the seafood pho and though I can't complain, the shrimp was chewy (frozen). I'd come back for a quick meal, but skipping otherwise. There are better SJ and Milpitas pho places. read more

I don't remember how many time I've been here. All of my family members love this place, especially my Dad so whenever he comes to the States, we go here at least twice a week for lunch. The only they got going is their Pho, too bad I'm not a Pho enthusiast (even though I'm Vietnamese). Too be far though, their Pho is probably one of the best in San Jose, if not California. It's just that I ate too much Pho in my lifetime and I just got tired of the dish. So I pretty much tried everything on their menu since everytime I was there, I tried to avoid Pho as much as possible :) The place is packed during lunch time, especially on weekday since this is downtown afterall. The place is very old and they don't even bother stiching up the clearly torn out sofa seat or better yet get new seats all together. The servers are friendly though during rush hour, you know you're gonna wait a long time for your orders. I like their hot soy milk, especially on cold & rainy days :) One last thing, they are also famous for their fried banana but too bad I'm not into sweet. But that's just me, you guys should tried it, not bad! All and all, I think this place is great if you want Pho but I just personally not too fond of it. If i ever eat at this place it would only because of convenience. Lets talk about the place first. It's a small restaurant in the corner that kinda hard to spot if you're driving by. The interior is old with wooden furnitures (not the good kind) i only come here to pick up my food for lunch. Customer service of this place is just one of the worst. Every time i come here to pick up my food i feel like they're GIVING me food for free, no "what can i help you with nor even a thank you" i told them what i ordered on the phone and they push the food out to me then take my card and thats it!! I called in to order some eggrolls and beef vercm and the guy on the phone told me with a very firm and rude tone "no more for today, tomorrow" i had to ask him if he has another dish, why??? You're having a business dont you want customer to stay? At least ask if you can recommended something. Because i was hungry so i ordered a deep fried beef noodle. When i come to pick it up no one greeted me they all stared at me as if I'm not in the right place. Then a woman looked at me so i told her i ordered that and that then she handed it to me, like rxpected no thank you whatsoever. My food was in a togo box and a togo soup cup. But the messed up thing is that the put my togo box that has food in there vertically, really? Mmm! I came here on a rainy afternoon with my boyfriend and was so glad I did. This place is pretty awesome and their broth is so good and flavorful. I like their special hot sauce. They told us to only use a few drops (I don't think we looked like the type that could handle spicy or something). I used a few more and it was so good. Saying "I've had better" is too generous. It makes it sound like the food is not too bad but the Pho is bad. The broth was bland and "scummy" (the gray mess that comes from boiling beef before you strain/filter). The beef was not sliced with a slicer but roughly chopped. There is nothing good I can say about the pho. We also happened to order the 5 spiced chicken and I think I figured out the 5 spices they used, iodized salt, sea salt, kosher salt, MSG and NaCl. The piece of chicken was the saltiest thing I've ever tasted and I could barely get it down. The imperial roll we got looked like it was one they had from the day before and just refried to serve us. It was different shades of brown with parts of it black because of all the fried bits from other fried items stuck on it. It was truly horrible. And last but not least, I come to the iced coffee. I ordered the coffee when I ordered our lunch. It didn't come until I was about half way done with lunch but I just assumed they forgot and I'd just cancel the order when I got the bill. Unfortunately, it did come. The coffee had already gone through the coffee grounds. I felt the coffee grounds with my fingers and it was bone dry. Every place I've ever been too always serves the "drip" coffee at the table. So do they just have some instant crap that they're serving? I don't know. Maybe 15 years ago, this was a decent pho place, but the food has gone downhill. Supposedly, the owner is an intellectual and entertains his intellectual friends here. This explains why the service is so cold and they act like they are doing one a favor by allowing one to eat there. Back to the food; my visit this week found the pho to be less than mediocre. The food is ok but the service is terrible. I ordered to go and I didn't hear the woman when she said that my food was ready. She yelled at me and berated me for not hearing her. "I called you many times and you didn't answer. Your food is ready!" Also, when I walked in they were really rude speaking only in Vietnamese and no one came to take my order, so it was very ironic that she was yelling at me for not picking up my food promptly. I had to walk up to them specifically to say I was ordering to go, no one came up to me to ask how they could help me. I've never had a server yell at me. I had no idea this place was here! I have passed by so many times, but last night it finally caught my eye and I decided to go on in. I love the layout, there's something charming about its "hole-in-the-wall" simplicity. The wait staff was very quick, and while this is usually nice, I felt rushed though my order. My partner ordered her food first and immediately after she finished speaking, the waiter snapped up our menus, remembering to take my order as an afterthought. We both ordered the Pho Tai with brisket (#1) and spring rolls as an appetizer. The spring rolls were satisfactory, nothing too out of the ordinary for a Vietnamese restaurant. I ordered a thai iced tea, but they were out which wasn't too big of a deal. My partner ordered a soda-lemonade, excited that they even had it on the menu. In her rush, our waiter forgot about it and my partner never received it, though we did not make a big deal of it or remind our waiter. Then there was pho! The pho came in a pretty small bowl, filled to the brim with noodles, broth, steak, and brisket a plenty. The broth was good, but unlike any other pho I have ever had and not really in a "good" way. It was interesting and the normal size (for less than $7) filled both of us up. Overall: it was okay. It was cheaper than Pho Viet up on N 1st and they accepted credit cards, which was nice. If you like pho a certain way, you may have some doubts about the flavors in their pho. But if you're willing to roll with it, I think there is plenty to like about Dac Phuc. I will go back again and see if one of the non-pho dishes is any good. read more

I'm not big on pho, so I haven't tried that here. I notice that reviews tend to be "I love it" or "I hate it;" a good sign, a sign that this place has a distinctive style. The lemongrass beef with rice is really good and simple. No unwanted grease and salt, just flavor and a little bit of heat. The beef with bamboo (mang tre) rice plate is also tasty. I'm a victim for good hot sauce and their homemade hot sauce in the "ketchup bottles" is excellent. (Why doesn't everyone make a house hot sauce?). Even if their rice plates were crappy, I'd probably still come here for their hot sauce. The rice portions could be a bit larger for me, but are probably fine for most people (I have a big appetite). read more

I have been here off and on in the last 25 years. It is one of the best Vietnamese pho restaurants that you can eat ... ! Yes, I am serious and I know what I am talking about. For critical eater like myself, eating the right pho is very important. I ONLY like Northern style pho. If the pho is cooked by Southerners, Chinese Vietnamese then it is not Pho anymore. Da Phuc, however, has to adapt and change a ;little bit in their cooking style to suit many Southerners livign in the Bay area. That is sad! So, what is Northern style? You may ask. It is just the way how they prepare the broth. Normally they cook the broth at least 24 hours to extract all the juice from cow/ox bones. When they serve, the bowl is not too big or small (too big it is Southerner style, and too small it is Hue style (Middel Vietnam)). There should be no vegetables except fresh chilli. This is to keep the flavor of the broth without diluting it with other smells from vegetables or lemon. That is it! You eat slowly when it is hot and enjoy the aroma as much as you could. For some of you who are complaining about services. Do not expect good service from a good Vietnamese restaurant. To keep it cheap they must use their relatives, cousins, friends and these people are too proud to serve thus their attitude normally sucks toward customers. I get used to it and all I care is hot bolw of Pho. read more
