I have to give credit to the Yelp app, as there was no way I was going to find this place and be surprised. Looking for a place to have an affordable meal around this neighborhood that served Japanese food I had some places I knew from previous visits, but never ever thinking of this part of Burrard. Walking toward this location I was a little skeptical as there were a few restaurants here on Saturday afternoon that seemed to have closed for the day, or are just closed during the mid-shift and then it was there. The place wasn't busy at all, maybe someone picking up takeout and a small table of two, but that was it. We sat down, the three of us, and wondered are we in the right place... well I can say after leaving here, we did come to the right place, thank you to all who reviewed. We sat in this small restaurant, that when you walk in seems more like a take-out sushi joint, and sat ourselves at one of the tables. The lady that was working here quickly provided us some menu's, the normal flare of sashimi, maki, cones, combos, specialty rolls, appetizers, and bigger dishes like udon and soba noodles, quite the selection from this small little place. As the people running the joint were behind the front desk after leaving us alone to figure out what we wanted to order, I started hearing Mandarin... ok so this is a Chinese making sushi joint... more skeptical, then we decided to order a few things. From a few of their specialty rolls, one which was more on a take of a normal scallop roll with more stuff, to something that was more special than a regular BC roll, we even ordered the regular salon, tuna, cucumber maki combo, and then needed an order of yaki soba. To start with, the rolls that we had, each was done quite well, and none was 'over-riced' like one place that is up on Davie... (ahem). Each piece had great balance, from the protein fillings to the rice ratio, let alone how the rice was, from 3 people who were double guessing ourselves to ordering more food I really enjoyed all the flavors, especially ordering the regular chopped scallop roll after having the special one, and for a place that serves budget Japanese food you are getting good quality. Talking about the yaki-soba, it came out on a hot plate, steaming away with sizzle noise. It was pretty tasty, a tad on the sodium salty side, but it was a good balance of shrimp, onion, bean sprouts and cucumber, a good filler. After looking at everything we had to eat, we called the bill over, and it was very reasonable. For the amount we got, and the quality, I would definitely consider coming back here to eat, or even ordering takeout. You won't be impressed at the place when you come in, but that maybe a good thing, as you will be impressed after you have eaten here.

Chirashi was soooo delicious and fresh! Glad I was able to get a seat here.

OK, they go a bit heavy on the rice, but you get great cuts of sashimi! The toro was soft and luscious. Loved the white fish and salmon, too. Very nice. Seems the thing to do is to order in advance and go. There's something like five places to sit here. No lie. It is smaller than the typical commercial freezer. Hum...that's also likely why so many folks ordered to go. In all, a good spot. Great jasmine tea, excellent prices but be forewarned, the portion sizes are quite small, though the quality is good.

I ordered through UberEats. For the price you pay pretty good portion. Flavour is good and quantity was good. If you need an affordable sushi fix this may be the place.

    Sketchy salmon nigiri

Update - ordered again and got horrible food poisoning and was sick for 4 days. Scroll down, a few others also note they got quite ill. The health inspector informed me of several infractions including not keeping the fridges at the correct temp Everything we ordered was good -- but the wild salmon nigiri really turned me off w a layer of what I think was fat atop it...can't comment on the taste bc the visual appeal landed it in the dog dish..

    Recently office order.

Came here on a Friday night on a whim as I used to live in the area. Apparently it's under new management. It's mainly a takeout joint but we ate in. Table seating for about 10 and seating along the window for about 4 and along the sushi bar (cannot see the chef) for another 4. Ordered an assortment of things from rolls to ramen to "cooked" dishes. The sushi is actually pretty good. We had some of the fancy rolls and they were good. Somehow there's a uniqueness to the flavors. Not your typical Korean-sushi drizzled in sauce. The spicy agedashi tofu and the chicken karaage were really good. The prices are actually really good and the staff were very friendly. Not much else to say I suppose. Giving it a 5 based on the fact that in the area, for the price (and given it's neighborhood focus) it's one of the better sushi places. I do a lot of ordering in for my office and I'm definitely going to try a larger order from here in the near future.

    Prawn Tempura

Our first time to come here. Despite waiting for awhile (25 minutes) for appetizers prawn tempura ready to served. Turn out it was the best tempura we had in a while. We ordered spicy combo, tuna tataki, sunomono (prawn and crab), plus sashimi combo. Very small restaurant. Was pretty busy but the food here is worth the wait. Food quality is certainly excellent. The fish is fresh and the rolls are filling with very good amount of protein and LESS rice which is even better. Again, we'll come back and one of the best Sushi spot we have ever been to in Downtown for easy and quick dinner.

a close up of a plate of sushi

The tuna & salmon bowl and inferno roll was decent. But the California roll, bc roll and dynamite rolls were very "blah"... Kind of dry. The tamago nigiri wasn't all that great. I think my fav may have been the negitoro cone. I mean it's not horrendous food- I'd eat it if there was a gun to my head or if it was the only place open. But with soooo much good sushi in Vancouver... I would not willingly order from here again. I would give it a 2.5 if Yelp allowed half star ratings

    Chirashi don

Stopped in today for a chirashi don and negitoro roll. This small sushiya has been around for a long time but changed owners about a year ago. Service here was good, and the gentleman behind the desk was very polite. Order was speedy and they take cash AND debit or credit as you prefer. The area where you the stars fall off is unfortunately in the food. I'm a snob about two things I've been told, one is coffee and the other is food. So there, you've been informed. The negitoro roll had semi dry rice, the nori was not fresh and split after being rolled. The toro was okay but definitely not as fresh as the images from previous owners. Chirashi don was good. I actually quite enjoyed it. I left the squid because it was soggy, chewy an obviously recently frozen. The salmon and tuna was good as well as the egg. Sushi rice was the same and all the other sashimi was nothing I would come back for. The price was great, but if your looking for quality fishes, don't go here. To the owners, check your rice, and source your fish better. Up the prices by $1 on every item and you'll see much more business.

Daikichi Sushi is a very small family run Japanese restaurant. I think the restaurant may be able to seat like 12 customers. I have to admit my friend and I came here for lunch on Sunday and we ordered a bunch of rolls and I don't even know what we ordered! All I can say is the rolls were really good! We paid $30 and were stuffed full! It's a hike for me, but I would definitely come back for a sushi feast!

Little sushi bar with 3 tables

Well I am sad to have to say this place was a let down. I was going to go to Shi Zen Ya but a friend said he preferred this place. It's a small cute sushi bar ran by Chinese owners which is neither here nor there. As I sat down I asked the waitress/owner if they had brown rice. She said it was a dollar extra. When I asked if I could get the beef teriyaki with no sauce since I have a gluten allergy she said yes but the brown rice would be an extra $3 for the bowl. This was fine with me. I then told her I was waiting for 2 friends. The restaurant was empty but she kept harassing me asking where they were. In her defense the restaurant only has a bar and 3 tables but I waited less than 10mins for them. After we ordered and the food came my beef teriyaki had sauce all over it. When I told the waitress she returned it only to bring me another bowl with sauce on the rice and not the beef. I decided to just eat the beef even though I paid an extra $3 for brown rice covered in sauce I asked her not to put on. The beef was so salty I immediately had a stomach ache. Needless to say I didn't eat the rest of the food and went home to a terrible upset stomach and diarrhea. I gave this place 2-stars because maybe the sushi is good...maybe. And I feel bad giving any restaurant 1-star (which in my experience it deserved).

I appreciated this and would much prefer this over expecting to have a table than being disappointed. We got lucky though and were able to get seated right around 9. Service was very prompt and we were able to order, eat, and get out of the restaurant pretty quickly. Overall great experience even though I didn't absolutely love everything we ordered House roll: 3/5 this was ok. It sounded good initially but I think there was just too much going on Spicy chopped scallop roll: 4/5 presentation wasn't the best but it still tasted good Red dynamite roll: 5/5 their most popular roll for good reason. I would def recommend this one Salmon and tuna nigiri: 5/5 I liked both a lot and this perfectly scratched the itch for my sushi craving

I counted maybe 36 seats. The interior is nice but generic enough to be just about any type of restaurant. The menu accessed via QR code. I ended up trying the following: - Assorted Tempura: Good. Light batter, but slightly overbrowned. - Miso Black Cod: Good. More elaborate presentation than most, but very small piece. - Salmon Belly Sashimi: Very good. Fresh and delicious. - Tom Special Roll Tray: Very good. A great way to sample all the different roll, all which are very good. I thought it was reasonably priced and could adequately feed 4 people. Service was very good. There are a LOT of staff, so we were constantly being checked on to make sure we were happy and got anything we needed. Overall a good meal. It doesn't classify as the best sushi in Vancouver, but I can see the quality-value ratio might be the best in the city. All the food was quite good and certainly not overpriced. I imagine the high staff count was due to the overwhelming amount of takeout orders. I would return.

My hubs and I vacationed in Vancouver a few weeks ago in late April. We had seen the long lines for dinner at Saku when we were here more than a year ago. So, we decided to give them a try for a late lunch around 2pm on a Wednesday afternoon. No wait. We got seated right away. We liked how spacious and airy the dining room was. Our wait staff were friendly and on point. They were considerate about answering our questions about the food and food allergies. I ordered the chicken thigh katsu ($26 Can) and my hubs got the chicken thigh curry ($28.50 Can). No dairy involved in either dish which I was happy about because I have challenges digesting milk protein. Yes, it's kinda pricey. Yes, it's totally worth it. The katsu is light, crispy, fried perfectly, not greasy, and comes with unlimited rice, miso soup, finely chopped cabbage salad, and an addictively delicious sesame dressing. My hubs' curry sauce was served on the side so he could pour out as much or as little as he wanted. All in all, it was a very pleasant and satisfying meal. Saku is top notch for katsu. You won't believe how good katsu can be until you try it.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

Service was really amazing with servers explaining each dish and drinks were always topped off…read more Food was good, but maybe this isn't quite my style of omakase compared to the other ones I've tried. This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.
