Getting 4 stars because the mashed potatoes are instant. Fried okra was frozen from a bag, but tasty and much more acceptable than instant mashed potatoes. Meatloaf good. Fried chicken good. Cornbread was so good. Sweetened only by the cornmeal and milk, not by adding sugar and making it into corn cake. Will come back another time to try the chicken gizzards/livers and chicken dumplings. This hole-in-the-wall place is regularly listed as one of the best fried chicken and biscuit places in NC. I originally saw it listed in "Our State Magazine" but could never bring myself to eat here because the photos of their fried chicken on styrofoam plates always look less than appetizing. After 43 years of business, the owner announced the establishment would be closing its doors in August, 2024. The Mayor of Apex reached out and helped develop a plan to keep the restaurant going. Since its reopening in Nov, 2024, it seems to be going strong! I was happy to stand in a long (but fast!) line to place my order! My husband ordered the fried chicken filet sandwich and I had the chicken snack: 2 pieces of fried chicken and a biscuit. The photos can't capture the crispness and flavor of the juicy fried chicken! I think the biscuits aren't the best I've had, but they're still excellent! We will definitely be back. I want to try their blueberry muffins that everyone raves about! My brother-in-law added on a steak biscuit as well. I thought the biscuit itself was very good - flaky, soft, buttery, salted well. The piece of chicken was an entire chicken breast, breaded and fried. The breading was tasty. Unfortunately, the chicken breast was pretty dry and could have used more seasoning. Jam, jelly, ketchup were a must. Not the worst chicken biscuit I've had but not the best either. I wished I would have ordered the dark meat biscuit instead. Every couple years I get amnesia and a craving for a chicken biscuit and try this place. And every time I do, I get mad that I forgot how underwhelming it is. The biscuits are more roll like- not particularly buttery, flakey. The white meat chicken I got was from a bone in breast they ripped off the bone and threw on the biscuit. I can't speak to any of the other food, but with this being North Carolina, just drive a little further and get a good chicken biscuit elsewhere- this won't hit the spot. read more

I had breakfast here today and it was very good. I didn't realize breakfast ended at 10;30 and I went in just after that. They didn't have any more scrambled eggs but the young boy cooked some for. I appreciate it very much! That's good customer service for sure! The portions are big...I am sure I got more than 2 eggs...and the bacon was perfect. There's no butter here but they do have honey and several jelly choices. I like the old items they have in the area where you come in. A real down home country environment. Look at that plate of food. Yeah, it's good to be back in the South. Were the sides probably from a can? Maybe, but this food will heal you. Everyone in the area has probably known about this place for a million years, but i'm sure thankful they exist and want to drop them a note as a certified southern food joint. If you're not familiar with the area then you may pass it and think nothing of it by the exterior but it's a staple in the community. I went during lunch so it was starting to get busy but the line or wait wasn't unbearable. I ordered the bbq chicken wing meal with mashed potatoes. The bbq chicken was very flavorful but IMO the mashed potatoes were just bland. I also wanted to try the peach cobbler (I love the crust more than again). Well I don't know if it was because the peach cobbler was fresh out the oven but the crust was firm enough for me. It was more filling which made the crust kind of soggy for me. Some may like theirs like that but I don't. Overall the food was good and the customer service was nice. It gives the feel of down home cooking. read more

These folks done stole my Mommy's fried chicken recipe!!! Well, almost anyway...it's a freaking close 2nd to her's and that says a lot! I got a white meat chicken biscuit, a dark meat chicken biscuit, sausage gravy biscuit and a blueberry muffin. Don't judge me... The biscuits are perfectly baked, tender and buttery without being too much or greasy. The fried chicken was well seasoned, had an element of crunch to the skin and super moist while being deep fried to perfection! I'm a dark meat eater and devoured the entire thing. I tasted the white meat out of curiosity to see if it was as flavorful and moist and IT was! The blueberry muffin was enjoyable as well, but I only ate the top because I like the texture of muffin tops. It was super flavorful with tons of blueberries throughout! Great job. The 5 stars are for the items above. Unfortunately the sausage gravy biscuit was horrible. The biscuit was fine but the gravy was lumpy and quite unpleasant to the palate. It was not the "best ever" but I agree with other reviewers that the chicken here is pretty good. I had dark meat and wings and neither was over or under cooked. I would've liked them just a little more moist but I can easily do this again. The collard greens were a little bland for my taste but the cajun rice is excellent. Apparently if you want homefries you have to get there early so we missed out on those. This isn't your typical chicken biscuit.
