This place was so yummy! I was in the area that morning and called ahead for a take out order, which took around an hour to complete. I got the quilted buttercup with Ceci's mac and cheese. Something I didn't realized until I ordered was the level of customization available with each waffle dish; you're able to customize the type of waffle, the type of shmear, the side, and whether the chicken is fried or grilled, so that in effect there's no actual difference between each dish besides the type of chicken you want with the waffle (cutlet vs. wings vs. legs). I ended up asking for fried chicken, sweet potato waffles, the peach-apricot smear, and the mac and cheese. I don't know if it's because I hadn't had chicken and waffles in a while, but this place blew me away. The shmear provided an excellent textural and flavor counterpoint to the chicken and waffles so that you got a perfect bite of lightly sweet and soft waffle/fruity shmear/salty and crunchy chicken. The mac n cheese was also amazing. I feel like I'm usually a bit more critical about mac n cheeses, but this one was so rich and flavorful. I enjoyed every bite of everything I had. The only thing I would potentially wish for was just more of it. No issues with ordering and pickup itself. I was told beforehand that it can take up to 2 hours to get the food, so I ordered with that expectation and it ended up not being as long as I thought (although maybe long if you don't know this ahead of time). I hopped on Yelp! and tried to make a reservation for the following morning. None available until 3pm. Determined to eat here before we left the city (on a mini vacation), we woke up stupid early on Sunday. Got here about 10 minutes after 9 (opening time), parked right in front of the restaurant, and got a table easy. It was about half full. Glad we made this decision. The food here was worth the asinine early morning alarm. I ordered the Lightbrown Leghorn (hazelnut schmear and caramel almond drizzle), with a side of collard greens. My dish was soooooo good. I still think about it when I have a hankering for chicken and waffles. The chicken was well seasoned, crispy, and happiness. The waffle was fluffy, crisp, and blissful. Together with the schmear and drizzle, it was as if I reached enlightenment. It's not many foods that make me make up a song on the spot about how good my food is. This is one. My date never heard me sing. I can't, btw, but didn't care. My meal was amazing, y'all. The collard greens were good too. Remind me of how my aunt cooks them. My date got the Dueling Roosters-Rd 1. He really enjoyed them with the Calypso sauce. Don't recall his side. Our waitress was great. She was friendly, helpful, attentive, and funny. The chicken in the Orange-Speckled Chabo that I ordered was crispy and flavorful, a little dry if anything; the waffle is a pretty average waffle but the powdered sugar is a nice touch. For me, the shmear is one of the highlights of the meal. It's buttery but also sweet and light and and brings the meal together. The side potato salad was great, but the macaroni and cheese was not so much; it was too dry for my taste. Altogether, the food is pretty good. Service is pretty average and we as a party of two were seated immediately, so no problems with wait time. The price is a bit high for the value you get, and I'm pretty sure the chicken portion has gotten smaller since the last time I visited. There was some miscommunication about what time we could set up and they made accommodations so we could decorate the room before the guests arrived. However, they seated a group in the event space very close to the start of our event which delayed the start of our event by half an hour. Because of the delay, our food was cold. Also, as expected gratuity was added to the bill, however there absolutely no service provided throughout the event without requesting. We had to ask for napkins, additional beverages and even had to clear all the trash from the tables. The waiter actually handed us a trash bag. If you are required to pay gratuity, there should be a server dedicated to the event space. read more

There are some chairs placed outdoors in the event you have to wait. 1/2 Star. Service - If there's a wait, they'll take your name and phone number and then call you when the table is ready. Oh wicked, wicked waffles! Covered in butter, drenched with syrup and well, let's just throw in some fried chicken for good measure! I've been dying to try out Dames Chicken and Waffles for ages. I did a drive-by right when they opened up but was never able to convince my more health-conscious friends to eat it up there. But finally my friends Allison and Arlan caved in and a short walk later, we were at Dames right after they opened. The place was already pretty busy and 10 minutes later, they had a line out the door. Inside Dames it's all cafe and casual. Grab a self-serve coffee up front, they've got a long bar for single diners and a small service window in back where all their goodies come from the kitchen. Black chairs and tables abound, Dame's spices things up with some music memorabilia and jazz floating out of the speakers. The menu is simple but with plenty of choices. Choose a waffle with a fried chicken on top (filet, wings or drums), add in a flavored butter shmear, some syrup, a side (fruit, grits) and you're good to go! I went all out doing the Light Brown Leghorns: four drumsticks, with waffle, chocolate hazelnut butter and caramel cashew sauce, woohoo! Now you gotta take your time at Dames, the place is busy and the kitchen gets backed up a bit but it's all good. Our plates showed up after a leisurely wait and it looked great. A large soft, waffle cradling crispy drumsticks and with the shmear and syrup on the side. Cut into that chicken, fork off some waffle, dip it in some syrup and bam! Flavor and texture explosion! Salty, sweet, crunchy and savory, you get it all in one mouthful. It feels like a decadent combo of breakfast and dinner, yum-eee! There's a lot of food here so take your time and enjoy all those carbs and sugars at Dames. Service was fine but like I said, don't plan on being in a hurry because your chicken and waffles isn't fast food, people... Now I'm not sure how chicken and waffles got invented but boy oh boy, they were probably drunk at the time. Definitely a meal you should try sometime soon. It's oh so good in such a bad way. Day 3 in Durham and my hankering for southern fried chicken could not be kept at bay any longer. So after getting a morning workout in to ease my guilty conscience, I stopped by for brunch around 11, before the lunch crowd hit. The place was hopping, more than half the tables already full, Coltrane playing on the music system. I sat at the bar next to a guy dressed in a complete Michael Jordan Tar Heel outfit. The GOAT (pun intended) did go to college in the area after all, I mused, so what if we're just a couple of miles from UNC's arch rival Duke. Perusing the menu I willed myself away from all the amazing chicken and waffle with shmear combos and picked the least loaded meal that I could scratch my southern fried chicken itch with. This happened to be the Ms. E's Pleez - a 6 oz cutlet (grilled or fried) over grits and eggs - all for $8.25. The meal arrived quickly - but they forgot to get me cheesy grits so I sent it back. It came back a minute later with shredded cheese sprinkled over the butter laden grits they'd given me earlier - seriously?! Too hungry to send it back again, I mixed in the cheese as best as I could and tasted the grits. Not bad, but I've had better. Then I ate one of my eggs - can't go wrong with sunny side up in my book. The much anticipated chicken was next - one bite and I was in southern fried heaven! The batter was crisped just the right amount - giving a satisfying crunch as I bit into it - with subtle spices coming through with every chew; the chicken underneath juicy as it should be. Eaten with the chicken, the grits took on a whole different flavor - the combo worked wonderfully. These folks know what they're doing, I thought, as I abandoned my cutlery and used my fingers to sop up the rest of the grits and eggs with my chicken. Mmmm good! Wow, I am so sad that I couldn't give this place more stars!! I was visiting in November and was passing by Dame's Chicken and Waffles when an employee (or owner/manager) came outside and welcomed us in and tried to get to try it. I told him if I moved to Durham I'd come try it. Well, i moved. and i tried. and i was SO disappointed after reading all these GREAT reviews! a few of my friends also highly recommended this place. I came in last night (Saturday) and had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. That's ok, 15 mins is fine. We were seated and the service is extremely friendly. Very nice and welcoming and made sure we had all our questions answered. Very helpful especially since I've never had chicken and waffles before (i'm from the west coast). Our orders were taken and then we waited. and waited. and waited. It took almost 20 minutes for the food to come out.. and when it did.. my waffle was just warm (not freshly hot) and my chicken was BURNT! it had been overcooked and it was obvious. It was a VERY dark tinge of brown and the chicken was quite dry. I ordered the Frizzled Fowl, per yelp recommendations, and didn't even get a HINT of the "drizzled plum sauce". it was more like a sprinkle? either way, it was quite disappointing. Maybe because they were a bit busy that night. or maybe because they're still relatively new. Either way, I am determined to give this place another try. I absolutely adore Dame's Chicken and Waffles. My mind (and my palate) was blown when I first heard of this concept ... and then consumed some a year later. Absolutely DELICIOUS. It does sound gross and bizarre, but Dame's is amaaazing at pairing flavors and making them go together wonderfully - take my dish as an example. :) I will write it on one line by itself because it might be too much to handle otherwise. Japanese breaded chicken + blueberry waffle + plum sauce + candied pecans + strawberry schmear = oh my gosh absolutely amazing I was kind of worried that it'd be too fruity, but it wasn't at all; it was simply delicious. :) :) Food like this makes me smile uncontrollably. The breaded chicken was so flaky and delicious and tender and juicy that I don't think I can try their fried chicken, and the candied pecans were fabulous. I don't know if their other smears are as sweetly subtle (and yet flavorful!), but this one was incredible. The plum sauce was good, as was the blueberry waffle. I'm pretty picky with waffles because I have a waffle maker and I can make my own, but these are great. :) The prices may make you balk for a bit, but don't worry - there is a lot of food. The chicken and waffles: I ordered A Quilted Buttercup (cutlet + sweet potato waffle) with a blueberry schmear. You can switch the waffle flavor and schmear flavor to anything you like, you just have to keep the type of chicken (cutlet, drumstick, etc.) when you order. My hubby ordered What a Classy Hen (cutlet) + blueberry waffle + vanilla schmear. The cutlet was AMAZING. I seriously think it's some of the best fried chicken I've had in awhile. Super flavorful and crunchy and filling and comforting in my tummy. Not too greasy. I took a chunk of waffle with schmear and a chunk of chicken and ate it together and it was awesome! I liked that the sweet potato waffle had a hint of cinnamon to it. It is a bit more "mushy" than the blueberry waffle though, if you prefer crispy waffles with fluffy interiors. I also got a side of "hot & spicy greens" and they were definitely spicy...and a bit sour? Not my favorite part of the meal, but if you like strong and spicy, they fit criteria for both. TLDR: good food, but we were not seated almost an hour after our reservation time (made months in advance) and eventually had to give up and eat elsewhere. I am a huge fan of Dames food and was very excited to go there while back in Durham for the first time in years. I made a reservation ~2 months in advance because I remember the restaurant is often busy on the weekend. I also confirmed the reservation in the days prior. We arrived in time for the reservation but unfortunately almost an hour after our reservation time we still had not been seated and there was no Indication that we would be seated any time soon. There was basically no functional system in place to get people seated that we could tell. We eventually gave up and went somewhere else. We had two other groups of friends who were in town this weekend as well and had a very similar experience. One group was seated 45 minutes after their reservation time and the other was seated more than an hour and 15 minutes after their reservation time. They said the food held up, but if you can't actually get to the food that doesn't mean much. I think this problem could be at least helped if dames imposed a time limit on reservations (generally I've seen these at 90 minutes) so they can manage reservations better. read more

This place quickly gets very full! Came here right at opening on a WEEKDAY, and it was already full! They send you a text when they're ready to seat you, allowing you to walk around downtown Durham instead of waiting at this small venue. However, once you receive their text, you have a very short amount of time to return. Otherwise, you will lose your seat. As mentioned, the interior is small and a bit cramped. There are large glass windows to allow outdoor lighting to enter, but it was an overcast day, so the lighting was poor during my visit. It didn't affect my experience too much though. The waiter sounded very scripted whenever he talked to our table, but he was very attentive. When asked to take a group photo for us, our waiter decided to take a selfie first. I gotta hand it to him though -- the fact that he managed to take a decent selfie on the first try with a giant DSLR is quite impressive! There are multiple options for chicken and waffles. You are allowed to substitute the waffles and/or schmears as you please, at no additional cost. The combos listed are suggestions of what goes best together, but you are by no means limited to the items listed. The waiter highly encouraged us NOT to use the provided syrup because they are super proud of their schmears. You're also allowed one side in addition to the main meal. What I had: Light Brown Leghorns with Blueberry Waffle - Four chicken legs, a Classic waffle drizzled w/ Caramel & Cashews, Chocolate Hazelnut Schmear for $13.25. Side: fresh fruit (strawberry, pineapple). Highly recommend this for meat lovers. We ordered takeout online, and really appreciated the level of customization offered with how their orders options are set up! We ended up getting a Buff Brahmas to share (but if you're hungry this could definitely be a large meal for one), with mac + cheese and swaps for a sweet potato waffle and maple pecan sauce instead of the fruit jelly. I appreciate that for takeout we were able to request to have the shmear and sauce on the side. Upon arrival, there's a sign leading you to the door for the dedicated takeout area! It's completely separate from the sometimes-busy main entrance for dine-in customers, and there's a staff member making sure you get your food and anything else you need with your takeout. To be honest we got caught up with something and were around 20 to 30 minutes late for the time that our takeout order was ready (per the email info), but we were happy to find that the food was warm and not soggy from waiting for us, probably due to the foil they take care to use in takeout! The chicken is crispy and seasoned well, not dry at all! I like the variety in the Buff Brahmas order of having a cutlet and two wings - both of us usually prefer dark meat but the cutlet was cooked perfectly and very flavorful, and we finished it as well! The real star of the show is probably the schmears and spreads. We loved both the whiskey creme and the maple pecan sauce - they both went really well with the sweet potato waffle and the chicken! The waffle was tasty and paired well with everything else, I only wish it had more sweet potato as to me there was a mild sweet potato taste. The mac + cheese was great - a little unusual that it was made with penne pasta but flavorful and had a thick cheese sauce. Overall we really enjoyed our food here - the price is great for how much flavor and food you get! BEST. FRIED. CHICKEN. Okay maybe I'm no fried chicken pro since I'm from the west coast but both times I've been here has been outstanding. The wings are huge and juicy. The shmears are godly. My personal favorite is the maple pecan, it is so fragrant and has great texture - smooth with some crystallized sugar bits. Service can be slow but the food trumps everything. Popped into this location because we were craving something tasty to eat. Dame's never lets you down. I am not a fried chicken connoisseur but I will go on record and say this chicken is the best I have ever had. It's not greasy or heavy and every bite is juicy. Add their waffle to it and you have yourself a meal you can write home to mama about! Our server was friendly and on point. Even when he made an error that was not a big deal to us, he immediately corrected it. If you're anything like me at your first time here and have no idea what to get because you'd rather just say "i'll have one of everything please"...this is what you should order: The Classy Hen with a sweet potato waffle, chicken cutlet, and maple pecan shmear. Make sure you get everything in one bite. A savory crispy chicken cutlet, waffles, with a sweet shmear just seems like one of those things that shouldn't work together, but it really really does. I got a side of the mac n' cheese, which I forgot about until I finished my waffle so it was kind of cold and I didn't enjoy it too much. I can imagine it's good when its warm and melted cheesy. It's not all that creamy so if that's what you expect with mac n' cheese, then maybe try something else for your side. Anyway, if you have a free morning during the week, I highly recommend coming to Dame's for just a flippin' delicious meal. The weekends get really busy and the wait is long from what I hear, which is why I suggest a weekday if you can help it. And if you can only do it on a weekend, come here anyway. This is a must go when people visit me from out of town. I love getting the Carolina Cockerel, which is difficult to eat elegantly compared to the cutlet, but it is so worth it! We had the sweet potato waffles and they are so fluffy and delicious! They take reservation and validate the parking for the lot right around the corner, just take the ticket to the hostess as you're walking out. Cons: The waitress was rushing us the entire time even though the restaurant wasn't that busy. It also took me 20 min to flag down someone to get me some more refill. read more

After several years of avoiding Dame's we decided to try again; and the second time was the charm! Our service and food were awesome! Our waitress was Josephine and she was great; she paid very close attention to details and was extremely helpful with understanding the menu, how to order, what could be changed etc. That covers theservice, let's see what the food tastes like....Dame you have done the damn thing!!! The chicken was seasoned so well and fried perfectly; it was the perfect compliment to my waffle! The grits was oh so smoothe and did not require any additional seasonings.
