It's cut like dog treats at best. The whole thing is more like a sweet soup made of Korean japchae. Yes, they literally used japchae ingredients! No konjac noodles! No shiitake mushrooms but a few slices of button mushrooms. They should just take sukiyaki off their menu if they don't know what the dish is. Ordered and was eating the soup, when we noticed that there was a crack in the bottom of the plastic bowl, kinda gross, but ok, we continued to wait for our dinner. Suddenly a baby cockroach ran right down the wall next to me! Very Gross!! I used my light on my iPhone to look between the seat and the wall to show it to the waitress, there was old food, crumbs, a used chopstick, etc... down there! They offered to move us to the opposite side of the restaurant, we chose to leave. I've never in my life seen an actual cockroach in a restaurant! i don't know if they change ownership or something but we went the another day and the salmon they used of the sushi roll seem rubbish and i remember fresh salmon being used in there rolls like a beauty pink color not a reddish and i did not like them changing the brento box , in the middle they had some veggies but they switch it to a egg roll and tempura veggie piece with ketchup on it. i don't even like ketchup like that . i understand there they are trying get more business not quality shouldn't change. i would still recommend this place to people just upset with my favorite roll being change in quality read more

Seems like they just can't get it right. We moved into the neighborhood last year and this is our local sushi place. We keep giving them another chance but all 4 times they have forgotten a roll twice, given us the wrong item, and today gave us 4 rolls with no sauce. 4 incredibly dry rolls. The sushi is just "ok" and considering that something has been wrong all 4 times we've gone here I just hate it. This was our first time ordering takeout from Damo Sushi. We ordered the gyoza and 5 rolls of sushi: the Krazy Kat, Poki Poki, Bay Island Scallop (baked), Philadelphia, and Fairway. The sushi itself was decent, pretty fresh-tasting and some of the the flavors were interesting particularly in the sauce on the Fairway. However, I didn't expect the rolls to be as small in size as they were. The ordered amount of sushi (5 rolls) is usually perfect for us but it wasn't enough this time, and it was also pricier than nearby competitors, so I felt a little bummed. Disclaimer - I am a sushi snob and I did not order that much sushi. Party of 8, ordered some miso soups, house salads, seaweed salads, 6 pieces toro ($12.95) and 6 pieces hamachi ($7.50), tempura mix, and calamari. All the appetizers we had were pretty textbook and decent. I won't complain too much. However, the calamari was very bland, small portion, and served with Katsu sauce which didn't hit the pallet right. For entrees we ordered some rolls which were all decent. I wouldn't go so far as to say this sushi restaurant was the best but it is GREAT for beginners. They have a wide array of options and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The server seemed annoyed the whole time, which is what I have read from many reviews but I'm wondering if it's just her personality because it didn't come off with mal intent at all. They did skimp on the wasabi and ginger and didn't refill the waters consistently but I can give them a pass on that considering California is in a drought. Would I go here again? Well... Two people got their food after 15 minutes, I got mine after 20 or so, and I'm actually still waiting for the last meal in our group to arrive. We have a person in our group with a disability that prevents them from eating with chop sticks and makes it difficult to eat from anything but a bowl. We asked for a fork when ordering the food. We asked for a fork when they brought out the first meal and then asked for a bowl. We asked again for the fork when they brought a large saucer type plate instead of a bowl... then again when they brought the third person's meal.... eventually we walked to the kitchen door and asked for a fork. The food itself was only ok. Some of it was overcooked. A few sauces were decent. The ramen was literally grocery store brand top ramen. The soup stock the same. From being seated to being served took an hour. But they had plenty of time to serve Togo orders. So maybe buy togo? We almost walked out, but they were quick to bring the bill. The service is SLOW! Upon being seated, we waited 5 minutes before getting the menu and another 20 minutes before they took our order. In all that time, they didn't offer drinks or anything. Once we ordered we waited an overall total of another 40 minutes to get all our food. Everything came OUT AT DIFFERENT TIMES. None of the food we ordered were appetizers. As for the quality of the food, most of the proteins (chicken, beef, mushrooms, pork, egg) were over cooked. The sashimi I ordered also tasted old, especially the salmon. I also needed a fork. This is a Korean owned and serviced Japanese restaurant. The BAD things about Korean run Japanese restaurants are that the quality and freshness isn't quite there, the skill level is lower, and the presentation is not as good. Some things are not quite right, and any Japanese can tell right away. The GOOD things about a Korean owned Japanese restaurant is that they usually are close enough in all of the above so that most Caucasians can't tell the difference, and what they lack in all of the above, they usually try to make up in portions and pricing. So it's an approximation with an apology price. Damo Sushi has a huge 25 foot peaked ceiling, with many wooden booths and tables, and a semi-private curtained area. The sushi bar is in the middle. I walked in for lunch and they didn't even offer me the sushi bar, either because I looked like a Gaijin (Foreigner) or the Sushi chef wasn't there or trained. So they gave me a booth all by myself. It was a later lunch, so the place was only 1/3 full. I ordered what I often order in a non-Japanese Japanese restuarant....Chirashi....which is a bowl of rice topped with sashimi slices of a good variety. You can get a sampling of their fish and frreshness without spending too much....a safe and telling order.. The luncheon was served with salad, miso soup, and edamame beans, all included! The Chirashi came in a huge and unusual bowl, a large shallow one that would have been more appropriate for a large bowl of Udon or Pho, not really a Chirashi bowl. But maybe they heard me say thank you in Korean after the appetizers and felt obligated to impress or take care of me? You never know! The Chirashi was very generous with 3 slices each of salmon, yellow tail, albacore, and tuna; with also 2 slices of tamago (egg souffle), octopus, and a little squid ball with tobiko (flying fish eggs). This came with a big ball of wasabi and a handful of julienned daikon. I ordered green tea to drink, which was no charge! So although the Chirashi fish was not cut properly, presented without attention to detail, and not as fresh as I would like, but for a simple lunch it was counter balanced by a lot of food, all at a good price. The total bill was $12.95 before tip! They have large screen TVs, where i watched an Eagles concert DVD, and they do have karaoke apparatus perhaps for the evening. Having worked in Concord for over a year, I've never really explored many restaurants in the area. With short lunch breaks and punctuality being enforced, I figured going to my usual reliable spots would be the safe choice. Man, I missed out. Making the 50 minute drive out to Contra Costa County with a few friends, we managed to make use of a good day off on Veterans' Day by grabbing lunch with our gal pal. With Damo being her usual sushi spot, I quickly busted out my Blackberry Yelp app to do some pre-dining research. Unfortunately, with horrible AT&T service combined with EDGE connection, we arrived before the site even loaded on my phone. Had to go in blind...oh noez! However, I was not disappointed. With such a wide variety of rolls painted on 3 pages of the menu (and then an additional sheet with specials on the side), I had no idea where to start. Contemplating between 6 delicious looking selections, I finally narrowed it down to 2 - bay scallop & Niner roll. Gotta stay 49er faithful in every way possible! (but it was mainly for the fresh salmon w/ lemon slices on top). The food came out with the quickness! They must have sensed we were hungry. First time trying sliced lemon on top of raw salmon and it was...interesting. I enjoyed the lemon zest with the fish, but wasn't too fond of biting into the bitterness of the peel. The bay scallop roll totally dominated in terms of flavor. A hint of spiciness in the scallops was the perfect way to top off this baked delicacy. I loved that it wasn't completely drenched in mayo, unlike some other bay scallop rolls I've had in the past. With just the right amount of sauce and outrageous flavor, I'd be happy to make the 50 minute drive just for this. Prices are very reasonable, especially the bento box lunch deal. For 3 items (terryaki ____, gyoza, and 8 pieces of Cali rolls) along with a side of rice, salad, and egg, throw down a measly $10 and go on with your day. I had food poisoning from eating here. It lasted over 3 days and consisted of the feeling of going to hell and back. I know it's from this restaurant because all my other friends ate at the other nearby restaurants but I had to get sushi that day. This used to be my go to sushi place for over 5 years. My complaints begin with recent changes. There was a time when they had friendly, attentive staff. Those days are over. The staff now take forever to even come and take your order. After they bring you your food you'll be lucky if you get a chance to flag one down for anything. I always have to ask them for the check because they are always so busy cleaning and doing other things. Once they had you the check, don't even bother waiting. We waited at least 15 minutes for them to come back and process your payment so I just walk up to the register now. There is this older Asian woman that does not smile and has the worst customer service skills ever. She has "working at the fish market" etiquette. She literally does not listen. We told her "no tobiko" twice and she brought out our roll with it. We told her we ordered with out tobiko and she decides that she wants to argue with us. If you get this lady, you need to leave. Every time I come in, she has the same mad face on. Anyways, so I'm starting to get really pissed off it's already 12:10 and my food hasn't been done yet. When I ordered it before DINING IN it doesn't take 20+ minutes to have it brought to our table. I ask my friend if I should ask for a refund but it was ridiculous she didn't even come up to me to tell me it's almost ready or not. So we go up to the register and the lady goes to the back of the kitchen and comes out with my food. WHAT THE FUCK? So NOW you want to get it and it's not even busy ! I've been trying to find a good sushi place near my place. I like Damo as the prices are fair and you can easily place your order on the phone or on their website, which I haven't tried yet. I especially like that it's a neighborhood restaurant, you can see that with the Polaroid pictures on their walls. I appreciate that they know how to cook their rice, not too wet/mushy, which is critical for sushi and sadly this isn't the case for all sushi places. I called my order around 11:50am and ordered 4 rolls (Ace, Pleasant Hill, Salmon skin roll and Lion King roll), which they said should be ready in 15 minutes. My order was waiting for me when I picked it up and settling my bill was easy. My total came to be $50 before tip, which isn't terrible for sushi and I like that they have a good mix of fish/seafood; ahi, hamachi, salmon, scallops, crab, etc. i enjoyed all my rolls and highly recommend them. I usually eat at the Vietnamese or Korean restaurants next door. When you first walk in, it is definitely dark. The booths and the walls around the booths are all a deep brown color. And the high ceilings do not help with the lighting. But let me stop talking about the decor and start talking about the food! They offer bento box lunch specials from 11-4 and they are pretty cheap. Two items is roughly ~$8. Three items is about ~$11. I ordered a two item bento. I chose gyoza and California rolls. My bento box came with miso soup, rice, salad, a six-piece California roll, three pieces of gyoza, and some pickled veggies. I was super impressed by the amount of food for such a cheap price. Usually bento boxes are a lot more at other restaurants. The presentation of the food looked great. My California rolls were made perfectly. Not too big, not too small. And they didn't fall apart when I tried to pick them up. The gyoza was crunchy and very juicy in the inside. The salad has this mild thousand island/miso dressing, which was delicious. And the miso soup. Oh my, thank you for not watering it down! I love their miso soup. It definitely warmed my soul. If you want cheap, delicious sushi, and happen to be in the area around lunch time, come check this place out! I've been here twice and every time, it has been quiet. The service is great though. A decent Japanese restaurant within a 5 minute drive of my home-home... what more could I ask for? How about some decent service... Let's break this review down into 2 Categories. Food: Food is delicious. The Fish is very fresh, and the beef teriyaki and/or chicken teriyaki are usually tender with a good char from the grill. Miso soup is on par with all Korean-owned Japanese establishments, and their rolls are well sized, and creatively completed. They even have a few rolls that other Sushi places do not have... which is always a plus, because something new is why we love to eat out! Service: .... I understand that when it get's busy, you can't expect 5-star service, and I've come to accepting that there may be a few mistakes. Keep in mind that they were very apologetic, but apologies don't bring back customers. Most of my family ordered Combos consisting of Sashimi and tempura and/or teriyaki. My friend had ordered just 2 cut rolls. A Philly roll, and an asparagus roll. We all received our "bento" boxes, and sashimi, and she got her Philly roll. However 10 minutes into our meal, no asparagus roll to be found, so we ask our waiters, they said they will check into it. 15 minutes pass by, and we ask again, and they go to check. 10 minutes later, a waiter comes back and says "we ran out of asparagus" ... Are you kidding me? This is something that could have been brought to our attention when we first ordered... you know, when they're suppose to MAKE your food? I think OK, it was a mistake, maybe they will comp something, like a dessert, or 10% off the bill... NOTHING. NOTHING BUT THEIR INSINCERE APOLOGIES. To top it off, they charged me $2.00 for the extra bowl of rice i asked for... something most restaurants give for free. The California roll was basic. It was smaller then other Cali rolls I've had. My son loved it though, perfect bite size for him. The crunch roll, surprisingly was my favorite roll. My mom ordered the udon (I forget what it was called--it was a combination) and she thought it was ok. We've eaten here before and ordered the udon, but this time it just wasn't as good. Perhaps there has been a change of management since we've noticed the menu has changed and a slight redecoration; it has been a couple months since we've last dined here so that might be the case.
