I've celebrated countless birthdays there, friends birthdays, and just to have a Good Friday night with friends, having late night snacks and good soju. Service was never the greatest, but this last experience was one for the books on "how to be a horrible server". I was once a server, a host, and I've even been one on the line to cook the food, so i know what it's like. The server that night seated us in a booth, we politely asked for the booth closer to the door, more private and away from people. Obviously for a larger group, but it was an hour before closing, and, the restaurant was not busy. No other parties waiting. But we were seated all the way in the back. Then, she dropped off some plates, and came back around to drop off spoons. She quickly placed them on top of the plates and the spoons just toppled over and she walks away... okay... then when the first plate of food came, she placed it on the edge of the table, but my friends had clearly made space for her to place it in the middle. You know when you see your food coming so you hurry and make space? Yea, that's what we did. The plate was half way over the edge of the table.. that didn't make sense to me. It was last call and she came over to let us know, and she brought over a box. And we were deciding whether or not to take the leftovers. We then said yes. I had my hand on the box. But she was gripping it so hard and said "so yes or no to the box?!" Girl! I said yes! And my hand is on the box! Let it go already! Then comes the check. She drops it off.. she comes back in about a minute.. and she's just standing waiting... i couldn't help myself but to ask ... "do you need something...?" Cause.. no card was present. What joy it is to live in the Easy Bay Area- we get the coolest bits from the many different cultures that have settled here these years. This wonderful spot is a Korean hangout known colloquially as the Porno Bar, and they serve well portioned and exceptionally seasoned snacky dishes that though good anytime of day are tailor made for a late night birthday dinner or group date. Sitting in private cozy booths a party of 2-6 can really relax and curb those late dinner cravings. We shared the fabulous cheesecorn, some top shelf japchae, spicy fried wings, and calamari tempura. All our dishes were deeply flavorful, and as the wall of kpop news clippings and wall mounted classic vinyl LPs looked on we laughed and ate and had a really fun bday dinner for our friend. I'd say for the experience this place is a value, and along with our party the staff attended the 5-7 tables like true pro's. Adrian was my server last minute on a Thursday night right before closing. I came in for a to-go order of some chicken "strips." The food itself was okay. But for a late night snack, it hit the spot, fried in small pieces which I liked, great sauce, (they have peanut and spicy ) but they were quick, the place looked clean, they're open late, and the staff is kind. Adrian went above and beyond for me when I had lost my meal receipt and needed it for a work expense. I called a week later, he remembered me, put effort into finding it that evening because it was urgent for me to get reimbursed, and because I wasn't working that week in the area, offered to text me a photo, and saved me the drive! Dubbed the "porno bar" for its graphics on the wall, this place is THE late night hang out spot for Korean food and soju. It's a good place to go with friends to celebrate. They have a good selection of greasy foods and fruity soju. The food is 3 stars at best and the soju are 95% juice/5% alcohol. You won't get buzzed or drunk drinking it and we didn't even get Asian glow. However the service was good and our servers were attentive to our needs. They came by often to check on us and add to our order or serve us drinks and food. My friends and I ordered several dishes - Spicy rice cakes with everything tasted artificial and pretty spicy, not in a good way though. My friends were breaking a sweat eating it. The plate itself was huge and we barely made a dent on it as it came with 3 boiled eggs, instant ramen, potstickers, and veggies. It was the least favorite dish on the table. Whole fried chicken was way overdone as other folks have stated but the daikon that came with it was refreshing. I would skip this dish. Kimchi fried rice was a bit on the salty and mushy side, the rice might have been watered. The best item was the galbi, I would come and just order this item and nothing else to go with the complimentary side dishes of cucumber and kimchi. Very mediocre place to go to for taste and price. The atmosphere is pretty cool but that's about it. Went with a large group and got promptly seated so either this place isn't very popular or people go late in the night. The banchan weren't too bad. Got kimchi, fish cakes, cucumbers, and jelly. My table got a variety of main dishes to share: soy garlic chicken, short ribs, bibimbap, onion pancake, kimchi fried rice, japchae, tofu soup, and corn cheese. The best things to get are definitely the short ribs and kimchi fried rice. Short ribs were so tender and the fried rice is pretty spicy. The onion pancake was thick and stayed crispy, but the dipping sauce it came with didn't taste like anything. The soy garlic chicken had good flavor and was crispy, but was a bit dry. The most horrendous dish of the night goes to the corn cheese though. It's horribly sweet, and had no sign of visible cheese. I figured it was probably made with a mix of sweetened condensed milk and cheese powder. The only way to save it was to mix it with the pickled jalapeños that came with the soy garlic chicken. That dampened the sweetness and kicked up the flavor. I've never encountered such a strange corn cheese from a restaurant. Decided on a whim to drive to Oakland and try this place out. Got here around 12:30AM and the scene is pretty dark. They had Koop bumping in he background and I'm totally okay with that because I'm a big fan lol. Before you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the banner on top with some intriguing artwork. Then When you enter the restaurant, you'll notice artwork and poster all over the place! The place is relatively small but they can accommodate a large party since they have bigger benches in the front and back. Food was also good although the garlic chicken wing was more tangy than I thought it would be. I would most likely try the spicy chicken next time even though I can't really eat spicy food. The side dishes that came before everything was really good, but I believe depending on the time or day, it may change. They serve you rice water when you're seated and it tastes like the smell of rubbing alcohol (if that makes any sense). Food is pricey, but shareable since the portions are large. We were really excited to visit this place because of the great reviews and because we adore fried chicken. First the good part: Nice ambience, like an authentic Korean pub. Good service and music. Tasty banchan, and the kimchi has the aroma of the sea, so maybe bonito in there? Good prices compared to other Korean restaurants in the area. It felt like the kind of place I would want to bring my best friends to visit. The bad: We ordered a whole Korean fried chicken and japchae. The chicken was so dry the breast had split, it was not seasoned, and it seemed like yesterday's leftovers run through the fryer. The japchae was okay, nothing memorable. Perhaps the problem is that this is mainly a bar, since we were asked a couple of times whether we wanted beer or soju, and so their food is just an afterthought. Only street parking in a sketchy neighborhood with lots of broken window glass on the ground made us visit there as soon as they opened at 5:00, and so the place was pretty quiet. Their pitcher of yogurt soju will throw you back a few bucks (I think 22?) but you get a lot and it's super easy to drink. 1 pitcher will likely get 2-4 people tipsy at the very least. However, given how cheap they are, just order more if you're a tank! Fried food is bomb and they have all of the typical favorites plus a few fusion items (bulgogi tacos and burgers for example). I've never been upset at the things I've ordered...except the seafood pancake, don't get it (I may have came on an off night but it was reaaal off). Service is attentive. I've been coming to Da Sung Sa or "Porno Bar" as it's known for over a decade and am now just realizing I've never written a review for this place. I think I used to eat here at least once a month but haven't been here much lately... Da Sung Sa is Korean street food, so don't expect your traditional korean dishes here because you will be disappointed. The area is pretty sketchy so don't leave any valuables in your car and watch your surroundings. I've never had any issues but you'll know what I mean when you see the neighborhood. Usually don't have any issues finding parking on the street but ever since they added the bike lane in Oakland, it's been kind of a pain to drive through here as the street is more narrow. Anyways on to the restaurant itself. The restaurant is by no way fancy.. it's dimly lit, can get loud at times, and benchs are hard and uncomfortable. The food however is what you come here for... that and the soju cocktails. Probably the best Kim Chi Fried rice (that doesn't actually have kim chi in in it lol) that I've had. Other items that you must order: Spicy chicken wings, Rice cake with ramen, Cheese corn, Kalbi, Porno Fries, and the Seafood pancake. All of the soju cocktails are delicious but Yogurt and Mango are probably my favs. They used to let people smoke in the restaurant after 10, not sure if that's still allowed.. hopefully not. I forgot what it's called though because there was like 20 of us and I can't remember details in the midst of the crazy atmosphere. I do remember the vibe though. Ambience is also unique and cool late night vibes. Wouldn't recommend bringing your kid as there are lewd posters on the wall. The corn cheese is one of a kind and keeps me coming back here (it is on the sweeter than savory side). It's soooooooo good! My go to spot for late night eats when friends come to town. The decor alone is worth the trip. The restaurant is named after the most famous adult film theater in Seoul, S. Korea. The decor isn't x-rated, but definitely NSFW with the additions patrons make to the homemade wallpaper designed from magazines and other Korean periodicals. Service is constantly respectable, but the food is definitely not. One of our favorite dishes we often order is Al-gee-geh (spicy fish egg soup). I must admit....the best Al-gee-geh ever when it is made just right, but the cheapest and the worst when it is made by whoever is faking it in the kitchen as if the main cook is out for the day. Same fish eggs, but the soup base is as if someone just added cheap ramen soup base (the small packet included inside a package of 99cents ramen noodles). For $28.00 I must say this is simply unacceptable. And on this day even the barn-chahn that came with it tasted as if they only added salt to it. The texture and the taste of the Macaroni was so bad that I can honestly say that I was afraid it may have been a leftover from the day before or even worse....from someone else's leftover. Ewwwww right? Yes, that gross. Felt like a cheap $9.99 meal instead of a premium $28.00 one that I remember enjoying so much. If indeed the original cook was absent that day then the least they could have done was take off the menu items that the substitute cook was not trained enough to properly put together. After an experience like that who would be foolish to go back. Thanks for all the good memories I have had throughout the years at such a unique spot. I really should start actually reading reviews before going to places recommended on Yelp, because if I had known this place was called the Porno Palace...I would have come here sooner! My friend and I always play badminton until 10PM at night, and this is one of the few places that pops up that is still open late at night, so we decided to try it. In my head, I was thinking "oh s***, did I mess up in choosing a food spot, again (My friends and I had had a terrible experience at a Moroccan restaurant a couple weeks back which was in reality a grocery store. How the heck did it get 4 star reviews on Yelp, anyways? This is why I need to read the reviews...anyways, I digress)?!?" However, I felt more at ease once we turned the corner and saw that this was indeed a restaurant setting. I don't know what I could have possibly been imagining otherwise. If you like spicy food, this place does not mess around. I ordered the seafood bibimbap, which comes with rice and generous amounts of mussels, shrimp, and squid mixed with sauce. My mouth was on fire from the first bite. Oh, and just in case it wasn't spicy enough, they give you more sauce on the side if you want to spice it up even more! They also have kimchi and spam fried rice if you're into that. Also quite spicy. Disclaimer: On a scale of 0 to 10 in regards to handling spicy foods, I'm around a 4. If you're looking for a non-spicy dish, I recommend the beef fried rice. No banchan, but portion sizes of the entrees are generous enough. I noticed a lot of people has been paying a visit to Dan Sung Sa lately and I have to say I finally made it to Porno Palace after 3 years of a bookmark LOL Area is kind of sketch but the food and Soju were delicious. Upon walking in, I thought I was walking into a ghetto club, due to the dim lighting, graffiti on the wall, and hip hop music playing on blast. Luckily at 12am there wasn't many people there so they were able to accommodate all 11 of us. So word on the street is the Korean fried chicken is worthy and their specialty was the selective Soju. What did we order? Spicy Chicken Wings Garlic Fried Chicken Wings Chicken Strips with Peanut sauce 3 order of the Cheese corn Spicy tofu soup Porno fries Pork belly lettuce wraps Chicken Gizzards Pitcher of Peach Soju 11 people -$18.27 a person please!! I think I found my new hangout spot, definitely the food lived up, flavors were intact, big portions, perfect crunch, fast service, and to top it off drinking/dancing in your seat & listening to hip hop? made it a plus!!
