You know a dish is good when you tell yourself, "Oh, I'm just going to try a little bit of this." And then you can't stop eating it. This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. Don't be fooled by the old restaurant look. Wow this place is so hole in the wall, and the pork was so perfectly fried, crispy , seasoned! Finding parking here can be a little tricky. We parked a few blocks away on a Saturday night. The prices and portions are extremely reasonable! I went here years ago and nothing has changed. The zazang bap was something I've been craving so we decided to stop by today. The interior is nice and organized, service was great as soon as we entered. It wasn't too busy and we got seated right away. The food came out quickly. Since moving closer to the Bay, I've been looking to satisfy my jajangmyun and tangsooyuk craving and am so glad that I found Yu Yu Za Zang. In fact, their tangsooyuk tastes much better than my usual spot in SJ, the batter is much more light and you are able to taste the meat better! If you're a Korean kid or grew up with close Koreans, this dish is a nostalgic comfort food. They do the ja Jang pretty good here and I think it's a better choice than the one down the street. The tan su yuk here is good as well and is a must to be paired with the noodles. The great debate of sauce on top or sauce on the side, I choose on the side lol. I think it stays crispier and if you can't finish it all you don't want soggy leftovers. The place is set up like a small hole in the wall joint and that because it's a straight up mom and pop shop. I think they've been here a long time but I'm not sure how long. I have been going to the other place so much but it keeps changing owners and rebranding and the noodle quality has changed. Here it stays consistent so this is what I choose. This is not something nostalgic to my wife so she ventures off in the menu, she once ordered the wonton soup and I was like "wtf are you doing?" . When it came out, it was a bit different than most wonton soups because they used a Korean style broth as opposed to a traditional Chinese broth. This really changed the profile and I enjoyed that quite a bit too. Now we get a soup and a noodle to split along with the tang su yuk. I will say that the owner the woman waitress is a bit cold. I wouldn't say she's mean, but she certainly isn't nice lol. I've never seen anyone else serving so I understand she's responsible for all the tables and she's got to turn and burn. It's a good sign when you walk in at 2pm on a rainy afternoon and the place is packed!! We were lucky to get a table for 2. People were still coming in after us. I confess this is the second time eating jjajangmyeon (called Zazang Myun here) but it was the ultimate comfort food. Remember to take time to stir so each noodle has time to soak in the sauce. The sauce was not overly spiced or thick-perfect balance. Comes with a side of pickled radish. Really satisfying! We joked that next time we should order our own bowl instead of sharing LOL We inhaled the JJM before the spicy chicken came out. Would have been a nice accompaniment to the JJM but o well. The sauce was tangy and spice level was mild (good crunch too) but you can't eat it straight so we ordered a bowl rice later. The portions were huge and we took leftovers home. Bookmarked this place awhile back. It's a cozy spot on telegraph amongst all the other flashy places. A little unassuming, but I'm glad we came in to try it. Super simple, order from their menu or from the pictures posted above. We got the combo of spicy seafood soup and black bean noodles, then an order of poached dumplings (12 pieces). This was absolutely perfect. Our food came out in about less than 10 minutes, very fast and also quite tasty. My favorite aspects of the meal was the chewy noodles and broth of the seafood soup. It was fun dipping our dumplings in the black bean noodle sauce and also enjoying the tang of the pickled yellow radish! The meal was for two, and afterwards we felt the right amount of full! 2 things, these dishes are pretty messy so be careful, and the noodles are super long!
