Just want to share my personal experience using Dan the carpet man. I need my carpet re-stretched and found Dan thru google search. We talked on the phone, Dan seemed very friendly and knowledge about carpet business. Took a chance and had Dan the carpet service. Up front, Dn did a nice job fixing our carpet. I HIGHLY recommend you ask and verify his labor rate and get an written estimate. Also, try to avoid the small talk while Dan is working. He will charge you for every second/minute on the clock. Dan was amazing at providing exactly the carpet-fix solution needed! Dan is a try expert. My cats were digging under closed doors and ruined the carpet. Dan replaced some and literally hand glued the carpet loops in areas that were salvageable. Dan is worth every (reasonable) dollar he charges. What a rare and unusually talented craftsman. I can't speak highly enough of the quality of Dan's work; his decades of experience were very much on display in two separate jobs. One of these entailed fixing a carpet that a prior contractor had been unable to repair; Dan completed the task with ease. I've found over the course of my efforts to have these issues addressed that carpet repair is a rare skill (don't take my word for this; browse the various freelance labor websites to see for yourself), such that I count myself fortunate to live within the service area of his firm. Other reviews have commented on the price of the service. To each their own of course, but to my mind, I was hiring skilled labor, with an emphasis on the word 'skilled', and was happy to pay for such expertise. That said, his price was eminently reasonable even absent this; not a great deal more than I would expect to pay (and in the past have paid) for significantly lower quality work. We used Dan the Carpet Man to repair some carpet our dog tore up. Upfront, I want to want to clarify, this review is not solely based on the quality of his work. Dan actually did a nice job fixing our carpet, as you can see in the photos... if this review was just based on that, I would probably give him a 4/5. The 2 star rating is for the entire experience, mainly the ambiguity of Dan's prices and services. My husband originally responded to an ad from Dan the Carpet Man on craigslist asking for info/costs on carpet repairs... we sent Dan some pictures... his response... "I've never seen unraveled Berber this extensive. I would imagine this to cost 5 to 6 hundred dollars." Ok, fair enough, we agreed for him to come fix it. Dan came at 10am and we chatted for about 15 minutes about our options...repair vs replace. Originally Dan told me the carpet was good quality and we should go ahead and repair it, so I agreed. Around 11:45, I came to check out what was done, and Dan informed me the job was taking longer than he though because the carpet is not good quality... that's not what he said originally. At this point we talked for another 40 minutes about how he now thought we'd be better off replacing the carpet... though, if we do, we still have $250 for the work he already did...I decided to have him continue with the repairs. At 3:30 Dan called me and told me that he was still not done, but the cost to us was already around $750. I was a bit surprised by this. I asked him why he did not think to call and tell me this earlier...his response, "I called out your name 3 times, but you did not answer...do you just want me to stop?" I asked Dan what his hourly rate was. He told me $120 an hour. This was a bit surprising to me, I thought it was quite high, but shame on us for not asking upfront and not doing research on what the standard rate should be. Dan started getting frustrated with my questioning, and told me his rate was cheap compared to others... he said standard is around $200 an hour. At this point, I decided I was done trying to negotiate with Dan, and asked him to call my husband for further direction (They were the ones that originally agreed to this) Dan said, "ok, but that's just going to add to my billing time" REALLY???? He called my husband and my husband decided to have Dan continue with the job. Dan left at 5pm. He was at our house for 7 hours... I assume he took a lunch break at some point, but even if he didn't, the bill for the repairs was $870. One line item on the invoice..."carpet repair...$870". He did not clean/remove the shreds from the repairs. In my opinion, leaving construction waste is pretty unprofessional for someone charging $120 an hour. 7 hours*120 = $840 When my husband got home, he called Dan to inquire about the final bill, and asked Dan what his hourly rate was... Dan responded $125 an hour. Wow, Dan just gave himself a $5 an hour raise. Reality of it is, neither my husband nor I care about the extra $30. My issue is how unethical Dan was in quoting me one price, and then my husband a different price... Did he think we were not going to talk to each other? In the end, I think the repairs Dan did to the carpet look good, but feel he falsely represented his costs to us. If you do decide to go with Dan the Carpet Man, I strongly recommend getting a firm estimate upfront. read more

Dan did a wonderful job cleaning our carpets and getting rid of a bad paint (primer) stain in our bedroom. I made the mistake of climbing a ladder to patch and paint in our new home. I spilled some of the primer on the new carpet, and was distressed that we would need to purchase all new carpeting for the bedroom. Dan came out, and using his extensive expertise (he used to lead crews that installed carpet, and knows carpeting in & out), he worked tirelessly and got the stain out after it had been drying for ten days. UNBELIEVABLE! I wouldn't hesitate to hire Dan again, and will be recommending his services to friends and family. Carpeting smells brand new, and looks fantastic. THANK YOU, DAN!!! First word of advice, READ THE REVIEWS! I've been so busy with my new home purchase I totally disregarded looking at these reviews before hiring Dan to clean our carpets and I had the same exact experience as others mentioned. My mistake #1. Dan was found on Craigslist as others mentioned so that should be red flag number one, my mistake #2. I called Dan and we discussed the job and size of rooms and to be cleaned. Based on the size we agreed on $320 which was already more than any other company I called but he praises the HOST cleaning process and how good it cleans up to 80%. I never got a written estimate, my mistake #3. Dan arrived and immediately said it looks worse Than he thought but no worries his process does the job. Dan continued to talk a lot of past jobs and how well his cleaning does and in the end I found it as a distraction to add more time to the job. Halfway through the job Dan says my carpet is not this type, but another type that's very hard to clean and it's now a restoration job not a Cleaning. I said well what does that mean? You told me one price and now it's changed? Not only did the price change, he almost doubled it. At this point the carpet wasn't even getting that clean and i said that's it, clean up and no more. Dan basically charged me per hour, which I calculated at about $125 per hour which is insane. The carpet is just a bit cleaner and I'm out $500 for one room and a set of stairs which was quoted $320. I could of just bought new carpet for a bit more than waste it. Bottom line, if you DO hire Dan get an estimate in writing, have him look at it, and don't let him tell stories on how your carpet is bad quality or will take 8 Cleanings. In Illinois an estimate cannot exceed 10% of the price. I gave 2 stars cause Dan did work hard on trying to get it clean, but with so many years experience he should know what he can clean and how well, not just sell services knowing it won't ever look good again and double the cost like he did with past reviews. If your looking for an industry expert in carpet repairs, carpet cleaning (host system) or carpet installations the right way - this is the person to call. I had Dan out twice this past year to fix the poor installation I overpaid for 6 years ago and clean the carpets while at the house. His pricing is always fair and he is always transparent about the work that is needed. These previous reviewers expected a firm price by phone for repairs - just a ridiculous idea that someone knows every problem they may run into when pulling the carpet up. I am just glad I found this guy before getting my carpets steam cleaned - I had no idea that steam destroys carpet, removes stain resistant chemicals if you purchased that, and creates more bacteria than you had before cleaning. read more

I highly recommend Dan the Carpetman from Palatine IL. He stretched my carpets that are over 10 years old to take out the lumps and bumps. He fixed the connection of my carpet with the tile and it looks great. He also fixed other areas of my carpeting. He is extremely knowledgeable and kind. I only wished I did this work years ago. Dan did a great job repairing some carpet that had gotten wet from a shut off valve failing on the hot water heater. I sent him pictures and he stated an estimate including how long it would take. It was spot on and the results are fantastic. read more

If you want the job done right, this is the guy to call. I am a repeat customer and always will be. The job is pricier than steam cleaning but once you've tried it, you will know why! You can really tell that he knows what he's talking about and stands for the highest level of quality. He will not stop until he gets the job done. I will never touch steam cleaning carpeting after experiencing the Host cleaning process. You can immediately walk on it, its safe for pets and its safe for kids. It also cleans better than I've ever seen. He can truly make your carpet look like new again and I've never had a spot he couldn't tackle. read more
