I love the chewy outer layer of the tofu- rather mochi like and a delicious sauce! I don't like pork belly and didn't enjoy the bossam. Kimchi fried rice and the dumplings were okay. Maybe because I had high expectations and I've wanted to try this for awhile that I was but underwhelmed. Waiter came took our order, didn't write it down ( which is fine if your memory is great, repeated both our orders and was wrong both times. I was holding my breath about getting the right order. It's a small space, so it gets really tight. Came here during restaurant week got the sashimi, beef slider, pork belly, and pistachio gelato. The sashimi was ok, nothing mouthwatering or anything special. The beef slider is what I enjoyed the most, had a ton of flavor. Regretted getting the pork belly each piece was chewy and fatty and there were no wow flavors to it. I feel like they could have tried to offer a more inspiring dessert other than sorbet or gelato. Portion wise, after all that I felt like I snacked and could have ate real dinner. It's unfortunate that some restaurants don't use restaurant week to highlight their menu and get repeat customers. read more

I have been excited to try Danji for some time now. The ingredients were definitely high quality, but the whole meal was lacking flavor, spice, creativity, and overall depth. I really loved the original location of Danji, but their reopened spot was a bit of a let down. Came in a group of three and we tried the tofu, dumplings, bulgogi sliders, tteokboki, bossam, and fried rice. Aside from the tofu, nothing was memorable. Dumplings were over cooked (hard), and the fried rice egregiously lacking flavor. Was also considerably pricey (total around $250 for three people). Cocktails are much better. Got the Electric Slide and Korean Englishman cocktails. Korean Englishman is a great martini. Wanted to try the five faces, but they were out of the omija. Points for having a great soju list too! I had dinner at Danji last week before a Broadway play and had a very good time. I was enjoying a glass of orange while struggling to decide what to eat (the downside of a solo dinner - you can't try as much from the menu) when my waiter suggested I go with their 7-Course "Danji's Greatest Hits" Tasting menu for $83. I love a tasting menu, so I said yes please. With the tasting menu, I got to try: Yellowtail "HWI" Sashimi (with gochujang vinaigrette salad); Crispy and Soft Tofu (with ginger scallion dressing); "KP" Spicy Chicken Wings (with creamy onion dip); a Bulgogi beef slider (beef, spicy cucumber, and scallion salsa on a milk bread bun); Bossam pork belly (pork, pickled mu radish wrap); soy poached sablefish with rice (Alaskan black cod and braised daikon radish); and black sesame ice cream. All the dishes were good, but the tasting menu was too much food! I hate wasting food, but it was too much to finish (the last two savory courses were paired down a bit from their "Large to Share" size but were still sizable for a tasting menu). The beau and I have wanted to try Danji for a while now. We decided to go during what turned out to be Restaurant Week which we normally ignore. However they had a great featured tasting menu that we both chose so we could taste multiple things between the two of us. The food is flavorful, bold, and some items are quite spicy! The atmosphere is warm and cozy allowing you to really settle in and enjoy the experience. The manager was wonderfully accommodating and kind, something you don't see so much these days, especially in a restaurant of this size. These guys definitely know what they are doing. read more

Small cozy restayrant that serves tapa styles Korean food. We were debating doing the 7 course tasting menu, but decided against it because we wanted to try to galbi dish which wasn't included. We opted for three large plates, the bossom, galbi Jim and kimchi fried rice. The bossom was well cooked, and served with thinly sliced radish and scallions/pickled dried radish to make a wrap. All the elements paired well together. The galbi was a nice chunky tender piece of meet in a sweet beef stew. The kimchi fried rice fell short and was a bit bland, and kind of pricey for what it was. My friend had recommended for us to catch up at Danji over dinner as she wanted to finally try it after the unfortunate fire, so I was excited to have an opportunity to try another spot of the Korean dining scene in NYC! The space inside the restaurant is definitely tight, but the dim-lit atmosphere made it seem more cozy. I did appreciate that there were wall hooks to hang coats so I didn't have to worry about my puffer while eating. For our meal, my friend and I shared the crispy tofu, bulgogi sliders, and bossam. Starting with the tofu, I did love the juxtaposition between the crunchy exterior and the soft interior, but felt that there could have been more flavor or dressing. The bulgogi was great, but the star of the sandwich was the milk buns. As for the bossam, it was so tender and juicy and I was glad that there were radish wraps available to complement it. However, I had two issues with our experience. First, my friend and I felt really rushed at the end of our meal. The servers were attentive in that they removed plates, cleaned, and brought the next dish very promptly...but it was a little too immediate - as soon as we took our last bites, the servers whisked everything away. This was no problem until we had just finished the bossam and then right away, we were asked if we wanted anything else and when we said we were thinking about it, the waiter came back again in two minutes to ask again. This time, when we said no, the check was brought without us asking for it yet, and then we were checked in on again in a minute for our cards. I understand that speed and efficiency are important both for the quality of service and the running of the restaurant, but it was the manner in which all of this was done that really confused us. We had been sitting for less than an hour and were basically ushered out. I would've understood if we had been lingering for over 90 minutes (which I feel like is a standard allotment of time for a table), but this was not the case. This was disappointing as the point of going to a fine dining restaurant like this is to savor the food AND company of the meal. If we wanted to quickly eat and leave somewhere, we would have picked a fast food chain. We ended up having to search for a spot nearby to continue the last 20 minutes of our conversation and had a bad taste left in our mouths. My next issue was concerning the price and value of the meals. I understand that restaurants are entitled to setting their prices based on the hard work, ingredients, and finesse that goes into the dishes, and I respect the effort that it takes to produce a restaurant meal. I am also aware that at fine dining restaurants, there will be higher price tags on dishes that may be cheaper elsewhere. However, I felt that these dishes in particular were overpriced for the portion sizes and items that we received, and not worth the amount of money. This is my own personal opinion so please take it with a grain of salt, but for context, I am Korean and grew up cooking or going out to eat Korean food every day so this was my basis of judgment. I am not writing this amount of detail and opinion to purely bash on the restaurant, because I honestly thought the dinner was okay and I love to support Korean-run businesses and hope that Danji continues to do well. A unique twist to Korean food, compared to the other ones in the city. My favorite were the bulgogi sliders, shrimp/scallion pancake. I havent really tried much classic korean food so I can not speak to the authencity but all the dishes were savory, flavorful without it being too oily or heavy. Their soypoached fish with rice entree was great as well and highly recommend. I will say, the price is a little bit on the steeper side and the space is small. Danji is back! And wow, what an incredible meal we had here. We went with the tasting menu (after I was assured that the bulgogi sliders were part of it). Everything was exquisite: the yellowtail, the crispy soft tofu, the wings, the bossam pork belly, the black cod, and of course, those sliders. I think these rival some of the best burgers in the city -- I'm a burger fan, for sure, and I could eat these sliders every day. I wasn't crazy for the ice cream dessert -- black sesame matcha, i think. It wasn't bad, and not worth docking any stars from here. Service was fast; food came out fairly quickly. So glad Chef Hoomi and the OG team are back to their designated space. Expect the same professionalism and original dishes (Bulgogi sliders, soy-poached black cod, and crispy tofu), but also the new KP spicy chicken wings, a spicy, sweet, and tangy Korean-Chinese style chicken dish and gochujang marinated pork belly slider, which is the newly introduced cousin to the beef version, but with a spicy personality. As for drinks, Danji is joining the natural wine support group, but the soju sangria lovers will still get their fix. Interior mainly stays the same, but updated and refreshed. This place is awesome! It is a Korean small plates restaurant. We went before a broadway show (Company), so we made an early reservation (5:45) as we knew wanted the tasting menu. They have some community table inside, so be prepared if you are attempting to social distance. We opted for seats at the bar and they were very accommodating. The bartender was very friendly! We opted for two cocktails. I wish I could remember the names as they were both great. Mine was whiskey based and my dates was vodka based. Everything on the tasting menu was delicious. We started with yellow tail sashimi, which was super fresh. Then we had a crispy tofu with ginger dressing. It was crispy on the outside which was very nice. The flavor was right in too. Then we moved into the shrimp and scallion pancake. Idk what the dipping sauce was but it complemented the pancake perfectly. The KFC spicy wings were not too spicy for me. They had a great flavor and a nice breading. The beef bulgogi slider was TO DIE FOR! I could have just had them and been satisfied. However, the soy poached black cod was super surprising, as I don't really enjoy cooked fish too much, but this was deeeelicious! The black sesame ice cream was a perfect ended. My gf and I made a last minute reservation for 6:15 on Sunday night and were so glad we did! We did outdoor seating because that's all that they had on Open Table and saw previous reviews about their outdoor setup. You get our own little booth/room and it's covered/heated very well. The waitress was super attentive. We were very impressed with the service, especially because it was cold and rainy. We ordered the yellowtail sashimi which was very very tender and fresh. It came with a gochujang flavor slaw that was fresh as well. The spicy rice cake was probably my favorite because of how crispy it was on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. The beef in the rice cake dish was super tender as well. The soy-honey chicken wings were nice and crispy but a little too sweet for me- it reminded us of orange chicken. My husband and I were craving a warm winter meal and Danji really hit the spot! We had Danji bookmarked for quite some time and decided to pull the trigger; I am very glad we did. I made a reservation on Open Table (I would highly recommend making a reservation as this place gets busy). We were greeted by someone when we walked into the restaurant and were seated immediately. We ordered two cocktails which were made perfectly. From there we ordered our appetizer and main dishes: We started our meal with the vegetable dumplings which were simply amazing! I loved the filling and the soy dipping sauce. For our main dishes I had the bibimbap and I cannot say enough about this dish... from the marinated vegetables to the fried egg this plate does not disappoint. Picked up a bulgogi bibimbap entree as my Restaurant Week meal and was pleasantly surprised from the amount of food I got. The meal came with a side of kimchi and the sauce on the side so you can add as much as you'd like to your bibimbap. Obviously it wasn't in a clay pot but you still get all the elements of the bibimbap in a quick and efficient box. The flavors were delicious and the egg was cooked to a perfectly-runny yolk consistency. They also have a pretty nice outdoor setup where you get your own private booth with a sliding door, big windows, and a heated inside. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

However, I was hoping for better vegetarian options that weren't all fried and sodium-heavy. We have a favorite Korean place back in Illinois that has the best vegetarian food, and when we originally looked up the menu for Danji it seemed to offer the same. When we arrived they told us they no longer had several items. We were disappointed that every veggie item was fried or very heavily-salted. Fan favs for our group of 4 included bulgogi sliders, yellowtail sashimi, fried tofu, shrimp/scallion pancake, sablefish with radish, soondubu, and kimchi bacon fried rice. YUM!! We got the dinner tasting menu: yellowtail sashimi with gochujang sauce, fried tofu, deconstructed bossam, bulgogi sliders, blackened cod over turnips, chicken wings where the meat just fell off the bone. And a watermelon sorbet that tasted like they just froze the watermelon and shaved it into a bowl. I'm not fancy enough to use the right words to describe this meal appropriately but I can say this was the most delicious Korean food I've had in a long time. I walked past this place a few times and the restaurant looks really good from the outside so I want to give it a try. Turns out the food was just meh and it was quite expensive at around 70 dollars per person. The only good dish that I'd come back for was the seafood pancake. Other dishes had flaws. The sauce on the hamachi was too strong which overpowers the fish. The kimchi fried rice tasted strange, the black bean noodle is not very flavorful (although the texture was very good).
