Love this Japanese tapas restaurant! Made a reservation for 6pm and the restaurant was pretty empty. The service was very nice and our food came out quickly Everything I ordered was delicious but my two favorites were the zabuton steak and the hamachi tataki. The zabuton steak was really tender and seasoned to perfection. The hamachi tataki was so yummy with the onions and tomatoes. Haven't had yellowtail in so long and it definitely hit the spot! The famous tsukune chicken meatball didn't have much flavor without the dipping sauce but I do have the say, the sauce is exceptional. It's a free range egg yolk and yuan dipping sauce and it really made the meatball delicious. I used the leftover dipping sauce and dipped the enoki mushrooms wrapped in smoked bacon and it was soooo yummy!! The golden roll was good but nothing special I was very content and full at the end of my meal, which surprised me since it is a bunch of small plates. Came here after work with a group of four friends on a Thursday last week it wasn't too busy at 5pm. This is a cute little cool place in Nomad. Our waitress was bubbly and very accommodating. I walked in around 10p and grabbed a seat at the empty bar. The cucumber salad was really fresh and bright. I really enjoyed the depth of umami flavor in the seaweed salad but the sesame oil was a touch too heavy for me. I wanted some sake but being that I'd been drinking champagne all day, thought I should hydrate with some water instead. I was stuck between ordering the Tsukune chicken meatball (these take 20 minutes to cook) and some chicken skins - so I got both! The meatball was so flavorful OMG! I found the tako lotus salad to be a very solid choice, featuring a nice presentation with about four pieces of octopus, thinly sliced lotus root and radish, tomatoes, and avocado. It was served with a yummy, nutty sesame dressing on the side, and I noticed some tofu (I think) in the mix even though it wasn't listed on the menu. While the portion size was good, the toppings were concentrated at the top with a large bed of greens underneath. The octopus was fine, though it was chewy and did not taste particularly fresh. I also tried the mini kaisendon for $12, which is a fair price for sashimi. However, the quality was just okay; the lobster and octopus felt a bit dry, the tuna was diced too finely and lacked flavor, making the salmon my favorite part. The added daikon and dipping sauce helped provide some needed flavor, but the fish generally lacked that high-end freshness. Ultimately, ordering raw fish at an izakaya can be hit or miss, so it might be better to stick with the cooked items like the skewers, such as their famous chicken meatballs. read more

Their service was very attentive, too. However, I have mixed feelings about the food & drinks, which were quite pricey. For food, we ordered: - Short Rib ($28+) - Tako Mini Salad ($9+) - Yakitori - Beef Short Rib ($11+) - Yakitori - Eggplant ($7+) - Yakitori - Oyster Mushroom ($7+) - Yakitori - Avocado ($7+) - Salmon Onigiri ($12+) The Tako Mini Salad was the prettiest dish and I really enjoyed it. I didn't understand why the Yakitori took 20-30 min to prepare (which they do inform you of when you order), but the Eggplant and Oyster Mushroom were also tasty. My least favorite was the Avocado, even though I love avocados. This one was overcooked and there was so much soy sauce in the middle I had to pour it out. The Salmon Onigiri was also with raw salmon, not cooked, which was unexpected. It lacked flavor and was simply overpriced. On top of the food, the drinks racked up our bill and we ended up paying nearly $100 per person, which was expensive for what it was. The cocktails were $17+ each and $13+ during happy hour. The only complaint I had was that the food came out kind of late and at really different times but it was not too big of a deal. Our server was really nice. She also let us know if we wanted to take any pictures before she cut things up. Awesome! Now the real focus needs to be on the food: My party ordered a whole bunch for the table. My fav was the beef tataki, beef tongue, chicken gizzard, and the veg tempura. My party also said they enjoy the sashimi that comes with the Tuesday special and the godzilla roll. Beside those, everything else fell short - either too dry or could be more tasty. My friend and I came here on my birthday for a late dinner. We ordered the pork shumai appetizer and two sushi rolls (spicy salmon and a crab eel sauce roll). I thought the portions for the shumai were small for the price but the food was all pretty good. The rolls especially were more filling than I expected. Unfortunately, we brought a small slice of cake with us into the restaurant and after one of the chefs initially lit the candle of the cake for us, the host told us there was a $25 dollar fee for eating the cake in the restaurant. I've never heard of a cake fee before, especially for just a small slice of cake and the experience detracted from my birthday. Personally would not come back here and I hope they change the policy or at least make it more clear to anyone celebrating an event here. read more

My first venture into Manhattan's NoMad district was this appropriately named place.  It's dark, tight, and loud in here but it's also a good, fun, and vibrant hipster place for a boys' night out on the town.  It's a bit too loud for what I would call a date night place, and I think it's louder than your typical Japanese izakayas.  But this is NYC isn't it, ha.   The food quality is also tip-top good here, and I'm in no position to judge prices as what I think may be a little pricey may actually be reasonable in Manhattan.  Anyway on to the food and drink.  My nephew and I had a foodies' izakaya dinner: For drinks, nephew had a high ball and I had an old fashioned and an Orion draft beer.  It turned out to be the cheapest old fashioned of my 3 day trip at only $16, woot woot, and good too!  For food, it was an assortment to try out their menu: - beef tataki - assorted tempura vegetables - chicken meat balls with egg yolk - yakitori skewers of chicken thigh, chicken skin (kawa), and beef short rib - salmon - 2 uni rolls - shishito peppers - oyster mushrooms It was all delicious and a fun dinner. read more

I've had the best-rated okonomiyaki in Osaka, and I didn't enjoy that as much as the one here. - teriyaki ika (squid): another delicious dish! - pork belly yakitori: the perfect amount of fat. - Dasai (sake): 720ml was a great bottle to share among four people. Now comes the ugly part. We came here specifically for the yakitori. The server warned us that the wait time for yakitori was about 20 mins, which we acknowledged and proceeded to order other stuff while we waited. The server came back 5 mins later to tell us that the wait time for the yakitori had increased to an hour due to a backlog in the grilling station since another party had placed a large order. So we asked the server if he could offer us anything for the inconvenience...he walked away to place our order (I am not sure why the order wasn't placed in the first place) and never returned again. We flagged him down in passing to see if he had spoken to the manager, and that's when he finally realized what we were asking. I was trying to be smooth about our request, but I guess it didn't translate well. I get that it is not always possible for the restaurant to comp the customers for the extra wait time. Still, there is a better way to handle this than just being defensive towards the customers, especially after placing the order on large ticket items. I understand that there is a labor shortage in the leisure & hospitality sector. Still, basic customer service training is a must in every job sector, despite the labor market today. read more

It was actuallly a good price for the amount we got and I would get this again! Moku roll; 4.5/5; The roll was so delicious. From top to bottom the avocado, rice, & eel was super soft and smooth! It was pricey at $20, but you gotta treat yourself sometime. The specialty roll we had was good, but the other two dishes we got were definitely more memorable. We got one of their house cocktails featuring peach and yakult, and that was such a treat! It was so refreshing and not too sweet. TLDR: Don't go here. It doesn't taste like Japanese food, the food ranges from "tastes like food poisoning" to "just ok", the uni had gone bad, the server never checked on how our food was, and most of the items were overpriced. One of the worst dining experiences I've had. The food was awful, the uni (sea urchin) tasted old, and the service was unacceptable. After one bite of one piece, I was legitimately worried about food poisoning given how old and slightly sour it tasted. We sent back 3/4 pieces since no one else wanted to try it after my reaction and informed the server that we did not want the rest. I would have given maybe 2-3 stars for the food, but the fact the server did not offer to replace or reimburse an item we ate less than 75% of and sent back turned the dining experience even more sour than the uni. By the way, the 4 pieces of uni sushi were 28 dollars because uni is usually a luxury food. We ordered the following and I'll give comments for each one. Uni Sushi Onigiri - Tastes like food poisoning. Uni was not fresh, sent it back Ebi (Shrimp) Mayo - The shrimp had minimal flavor, basically just oil and batter. Fried batter tastes good,but why even call it shrimp. Okonomiyaki - Ok. Nothing special, but it was fine. Karaage - Similar to the ebi mayo, it only tasted good because it was deep fried. If you like fried anything it's fine, but it does not taste anything like real karaage - mostly because of the lack of seasoning. Grilled Squid - This was ok. Nothing special, but ok. Tsukune Skewers - This tasted good. The main complaint is that it was $10 per skewer and most good yakitori places are $5 per skewer for the same or better quality. It's strange how being surrounded by other subpar dishes makes you more grateful. Sweet Potato Fries - Exactly what you would expect for fries, greasy potatoes. No complaints on this one. read more
