They are unprofessional, i will not suggest to anybody... if you dont want your rims to be scrached.. i had all brand new rims(with all packaging) to be mounted on the tires, they mount them and i find my two rims all scrached, like circle scratch as the mounting machine works, when i noticed it and told them about it they said it was like that, and they refuse me to give my money back. They charged me $100 for only mount 4 tires, without balancing and instalation. It was exact 20 min before i leave this revew.... GUYS BE AWARE !!! read more

They worked on my old car many times, an '05 Subaru Impreza. The mechanic there (Mike) always seems to be honest and only do what is absolutely needed, wants to save you money but not have you drive around the block and your car break down five minutes later either. I had a serpentine belt replaced and continued to have issues but they had me bring it back and replaced it free of charge so they do make good on their promises. read more

I've moved around Boston a lot in the past 4 years, but I've always consistently gone to Dave's. In my first experience with them, my car alarm unexpectedly would go off every couple of minutes and I needed to find a good mechanic in a short amount of time because I work full-time. I arrived at Dave's unannounced right when they were about to close, and they graciously took me in and allowed me to drop my car off. I needed my car for work the next day by 11 am and they were more than willing to work with me, and my car was actually ready to go by 9 am the following morning. Since then I've been there several more times, and have always appreciated their time and effort to help me. Not going to lie, I know absolutely nothing about cars and I'm the type of person where that is clearly written across my face. Therefore, I am always fearful I am going to get ripped of by mechanics and this has NEVER been the case with Dave's. They have always been 100% honest with me and I have never felt I have been overcharged or scammed. These guys are good people, I trust them, and I would send all my friends here. read more

Mike is head mechanic of Dave's Auto has been my mechanic for about four years now. Before he was at Dave's, he was the head mechanic at Fenway Mobil. I definitely recommend Mike and Dave's Auto. Over the years I've brought my car to him, Mike has shown himself to be honest, fair, reliable, and good at keeping cars working. He helped keep my aging 1990 Camry on the road until it finally gave up last year. One thing that I especially appreciate about Mike is his caution about spending my money. On a number of occasions he was advised me against having work done on the car because he wasn't sure it would help. He could have easily advised me to do it just so he could make an extra buck but he appears to be more concerned with keeping customers long term than making a fast buck - which is refreshing. I have a new car now and if there's something wrong with it, I bring it to Mike's before I bring it to the dealer, because I'm confident that Mike won't try to sell me something I don't need. A good mechanic is hard to find. If you're looking for one, Mike is a good one. read more

This is a great place for body work or any kind of repair / maintenance! I crumpled in one of my back bumpers on my truck pulling out of a back alley, and Mike completely fixed it. Looks brand new, and he did fantastic work. More importantly, Mike is a very honest guy. He was prepared to order a new bumper if needed, but said he'd like to take a stab at fixing it on his own to save me a couple hundred bucks. I'm surprised by the reviews being so negative, so I will caveat that my interactions have always been with Michael, who has been more of a "car coach" than a mechanic. This man knows a ton about BMWs... You can tell he loves these cars. And he's gone above and beyond for me. One day I forgot my wallet at home. Rather than making me forsake my plans for the day, he said it was ok for me to call in with my credit card number and let me leave without paying. I called to pay a few days later, and he was totally nonplussed. Talk about doing what's best for the customer! I've called for quotes and compared against other trusted repair shops, who have given me similar prices. I have been going to Dave's since I started working very nearby in 2009. First with my Nissan Murano and now with my Toyota Highlander. They have always been very good with their repairs and diagnosing the problem with my car. Price is what it is and if you shop around you will find they are comparable or even less expensive. Just like Jennifer C. , I went to Dave's auto because the towtruck driver recommended it. Since I was a long distance from home...I really didn't have much choice. I had my alternator replaced. Only to find out that it failed not even a month later, AND that they over charged me a $100 for the part and $100 in labor. I don't want to find out how much more they charged me for the wheel bearings I had put in a week later. It turns out that I could have had my car towed home and still safe money. I'm now again without a car when i really should not have been. DO NOT use there services!!! They seem helpful and kind but really are not. read more

I give this shop two stars. A couple months ago I brought my car in for service. They were very responsive and easily accessible, but I'm pretty sure someone on staff is a bit dishonest. They Gave their expert opinion on a safety concern which ended up being quite inaccurate and somewhat dangerous. The final out of pocket expenses were almost double the original quote, and that's not the worst part of it. Too much to write...buyer Beware. read more

I love Dave's Auto. I've been taking my car to them for several years, and find them to be thorough and fair-priced.

I had my brakes replaced at Dave's in July 2018. After the repair, upon driving the car twice, I began to notice a concerning rattling noise and shakiness on the front left side of the car every time I went over a bump. I took the car to another repair shop in the area, and they found that the bolts on the calipers were missing from the front left side of the car -- they had not been put back on the car after the brakes were replaced. They took a photo of the missing bolts, recommended that I go immediately to the place where I had the initial repair done, and advised that I drive the car as little as possible, as these missing bolts were extremely dangerous. I went back to Dave's, explained the situation, and left my car with him. He then called me the next morning, and claimed (despite my photo evidence) that everything was as it should be -- that the only bolt missing was from the dust cover. While I don't have definitive proof beyond the photo of the missing caliper bolts provided by the third party repair shop, that other shop would have no reason to lie about their findings. Dave's made a huge mistake (that could have resulted in a serious accident had I been driving at higher speeds), then lied about it to cover their asses. read more

Dave's auto is everything you fear in an auto repair place. Basically they make money by fixing cars that are not broken. I had a diagnostic done on a relatively new car, they told me I needed to replace more than what I did. Something did not seem right with the diagnostic so I took the car in for a second opinion at a different shop. Turns out it was a minor fix. I called them back for a refund on the false diagnostic and they treated me as if I was a competitor instead of a customer. This place is not trustworthy. I am surprised Dave's auto has a positive review on this site. Judging from my experience the review is likely phony and from the manager/owner of the store. I went on the recommendation from the Tow Truck Driver when my car stalled out in the middle of an entrance to a one way street last January. I was charged almost $1000 to replace the wiring and starter as well as all of the spark plugs. A month later my car would not start again and I went elsewhere only to be told that the work they said they did was not so and after reviewing the invoice with me I was completely swindled. I will not recommend ever having your car fixed here if you are looking for a good job done. I had to repay someone else (less thank god) to do what they said they did in the first place. Stay away from this place at all costs! Took my car there for an inspection. From the moment I walked in, something didn't feel right. It felt like a mafia den. I regret not turning back--I was in a rush and needed the inspection. Some guy came to pick up his car. It was leaking oil. The manager yelled at the only mechanic doing work and told him to fix the gentleman's car. Feeling uneasy, I tried to back out and say I needed to get to an appointment. The manager insisted they keep the car there, that they were already looking at it. I continued to wait. They then told me there was an issue and it wouldn't pass inspection, that it might just be a fuel cap that was loose. Tried that, didn't work. They then tell me it's another part related to the engine, which cost a few hundred dollars. They offer to put the part in, assuring me it would fix the issue and my car could pass inspection. They then told me I needed to drive 150 miles to make sure the new part works. Well, 150 miles later, the same issue arose. I took the car to another shop for a second opinion. Several mechanics looked at it, and the part that Dave's Auto put in my car was not new--it was likely part of another car that they found at the scrap yard. The shop giving me a second opinion showed me a brand new part and compared it with the same part that Dave's Auto sold me--you could tell one was new from the manufacturer and one had been installed in a car for some time. I took the defective part back to Dave's Auto and requested a refund. The mechanic told me that the 'boss' was away on vacation, and nothing could be done. I requested that the mechanic call the boss's cell. He refused. When the boss returned from vacation, I spoke to him and requested a refund. He refused and proceeded to yell and curse at me. He assured me he has never sold a faulty product ever. And he would not issue a refund. Read the reviews. Notice the similar themes of horrible experiences at this car shop serving as a mafia cover. Still considering doing business with Dave's Auto after reading these reviews? Look at the state inspection sign. Unless the month is August, the state inspection sign is never current. The state needs to revoke it's license to issue inspection stickers immediately. This shop is a scam! Never recommend to even your worst enemy. Extremely disappointed with the service I received at Dave's Auto. I blew a fuse and was towed to this shop; although the service was friendly and seemed to have good intentions, they did not find or fix the problem in my car and I broke down again. They charged me double for double the amount of labor than was necessary for fixing a fuse, especially when not discovering the initial and overall problem. I was also charged for all the fuses they blew while attempting to fix my Toyota. I feel overcharged and completely gipped. read more

Tow Truck Driver recommended, based on other posts it looks like there is some sort of kick back going on. It is tough to go to an alternative opinion if your car doesn't move, they can charge you almost anything and give you any story as to why. I went to this mechanic and was almost taken to the cleaners. They told me I need to replace an alternator. I paid to get a second opinion and the other shop told me it was just a battery. This seems like an obvious mistake that good mechanics should never make. read more

Wow! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! Shady is the least that I can say about this place. My tow truck guy told me about Dave's Auto Repair and thinking that he is AAA affiliated, I figured that he would know a good place. So the tow truck guy took me there instead of this other place, which is AAA approved (yes, I should have trusted the AAA recommendation) Big mistake! Not only Dave's Auto Repair recommended me a $700 job that I did not need, they charged me $90 for the estimate that they did, which I thought suppose to be free. I wanted a second opinion, so I told them not to perform the job. I went back to the AAA recommended place (yes, I did my home work this time and checked them out on the web and they have nothing but great reviews) and they did a through check up on the car. The repair ended up only costing me about $200. I am telling you! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!!! read more

He did tell me that if I went back there he would let me use that $200 towards the next service. Then when I brought it back there he said that he had never said that and that I was completely wrong. I've been Mike's customer at Dave's Auto, now at 880 Commonwealth, for about 20 years. Mike understands the mechanics/electronics of just about any make and model of automobile. After many bad experiences with auto mechanics in the past, I found Dave's Auto, originally located on Fenway. I've had all kinds of work completed within just a day, including oil changes and part replacement like water pump, shocks and struts. You bring in your car in the morning, Mike diagnoses the problem, and by the end of the day, you pick up your car. He always takes the customer's side and comes up with the best solution to save money and time. There were times he did not even charge me for labor. I have owned a Ford Escort, Subaru Impreza, and now a BMW 335, each one with more mechanical and electronic complexity, and he has taken care of them all. So, I can, in all honesty, highly recommend Dave's Auto Shop for all kinds of car works, and, especially, Mike for his reliable service. read more
