Dave's Auto did a state annual inspection for my car in April, and the car failed inspection. I then had a 60-day period to have it reinspected at the same location for free, or be required to pay again for a new inspection. Because it was not initially clear what code was causing the check engine light, I had to drive the car long distances after each repair was made, until eventually the check engine light stayed off. I called Dave's Auto each morning to ask for help with diagnosing and repairing the car, each time they would tell me yes, I could bring the car in that morning. I would show up within 20 minutes only to be told they could not take my car and to come back again the next day. In order to get the work done in a timely way with better communication, I ended up taking the car to other mechanics for diagnosis and repair. In June when the repairs were finally completed and all was set for reinspection, I called Dave's Auto to ask them to reinspect my car. They told me their machine was broken and to call back the next day. When I called back again, I was told the machine would not be repaired for until the following week, after my 60-day period was over. Since their machine was broken and they were not able to provide the standard free reinspection, I asked them if they would give me a refund for the original inspection they did, and they said no. While some of their customer service was good, some of it was unhelpful or rude, and overall they did not resolve my problem or communicate effectively. read more

I have been using Dave's Auto for about 3 years now, mostly for inspections and oil changes. They would do the job at hand and never hazzled me about doing anything extra like replacing your windshield wipers. Something you would get at a dealership. Earlier this year I drove my Rav4 over a flooded area (by sea water) during the astronomical high tide. May be that was not such a good idea. A few months later I started to hear a noise on the front of my car. I knew it could be my wheel bearing or differential, or both. I made an appointment with them and they called me that afternoon to tell me it was just the wheel bearing. Nothing more. It was taken care of by the end of the same day. Dave is a stand up guy and a great mechanic/business owner. My Nissan just wouldn't start one day and I towed it to Dave's Auto around 3pm. He said he would get to it the next day. He diagnosed, quoted a great price and fixed the car before noon the following day. He may not have known this but I had owned a garage/small dealership in the past and still couldn't believe the price he gave me for replacing a starter and battery. My garage would have charged over $800 but Dave did it for $600. Google estimate on just the starter was $700 let alone a $200 battery. I started going to Dave at his first shop on Hancock Street in Wollaston. I had a Land Rover that I had already spent $500 on in Gloucester. Dave knew the car and knew what to fix and it cost me half of the Gloucester guy. He has always been great. He's honest and capable and will never take advantage. Very responsible service. Abundant communication. I left my car there to have the steering wheel checked and they said everything looks ok upon checking. I wasn't charged a dime but still got contacted diligently and greeted with a smile. Seriously, go to Dave. He's the best: honest, fair, thorough and does great work. My first encounter with Dave's was about six months ago when a nearby big chain told me I needed a whole new transmission to the tune of almost $2,000 to deal with a check engine light and clunky-shifting gears. I'm not a mechanic, but that seemed like recommending surgery to fix a paper cut. After scouting online I took the car to Dave, who replaced a leaky valve and the transmission fluid for under 200 bucks, real problem solved. I have brought my car to Dave's Auto for at least 2 years now. I won't bring my car anywhere else (unless Dave recommends it). For example: I was in a car accident. Nothing too serious, but I had the option to bring my car to any body shop that I wanted to, provided that they met a certain criteria based on my insurance documents. The first person I called was Dave. He recommended a body shop that is run by a friend of his and, sure enough, I got the same amazing service that I receive every time I bring my car to Dave's. The body shop also handled all of the paper work and they even have an Enterprise Rental on site. Needless to say: I was very happy with the recommendation. Every time I bring my car to Dave's he is honest and fair (with his services, information and pricing). He never takes advantage of the fact that I'm a woman and don't know very much about cars. He knows his stuff. He doesn't charge me an arm and a leg. He helps me prioritize (which is great, considering that many of us don't have a ton of money to dedicate towards car repairs). He and his staff are also always very cheerful and friendly. I'm never afraid to ask any questions. I've had many services performed here (oil change, tune-up, tie rod repair, thermostat replacement, brakes, regular maintenance, etc). Like I said: I wouldn't bring my car anywhere else! read more

First, the positive: Dave and his colleagues were always very nice and seemed very fair when I went in there - it seemed like they wanted to do a good job. Unfortunately, I don't think they did one. I took my car in for an oil change and a repair to the clutch. But when I got it back, the car was extremely loud and was also leaking oil onto the driveway. When I took it to my old shop in Cambridge, they said that a screw had been put in at an angle, puncturing something (the oil tank, I guess). That meant that not only was there an oil leak, but also that it was impossible to simply fix it by removing the screw and putting it back in the right way. So that was $250 to repair. The noise turned out to be a problem with the motor mount, which Dave himself had told me when I had brought it back to him originally. He had said that that issue develops over time, so even though his work on the car may have accelerated it, it would have happened sooner or later. Fair enough, but the noise wasn't there when I brought the car in, and it was there (and loud) when I took it home. That repair cost several hundred dollars to fix. Dave seems like a nice guy and the other reviews on this site suggest he does good work, so maybe my experience was unusual. But I wouldn't bring my car back there. read more

If you are looking for a great, honest, skilled mechanic shop...give Dave's a try. I couldn't imagine anyone not being pleased with their services. When I moved to Quincy a couple of years ago, it was very important to find a mechanic I could trust and feel comfortable with, as I am not 'mechanically-inclined'. Once I found Dave's, I knew there was no need to try anyone else. Not only is he honest , flexible and fair, but everything is always fixed right the first time in a timely manner, and for what I feel is always a fair price. If something doesn't need to be fixed right away, he'll tell me it can wait. I truly feel that he has my interests and my budget in mind, not his. He also once recommended a friend for bodywork... and that gentleman was just as kind and helpful. I use Dave's auto service in Squantum and I am very happy with the service. While getting an inspection sticker, I was told by a mechanic in Brockton I had big problems with my engine. Joe and another guy who work at Squantum Dave's checked it out and I had no problem. That was 2 years ago and the Squantum guys were right that I had no problem. When fixing our car, not only was dave honest but he was very reasonable and timely when it came to the repairs. There was no mystery bill or mystery repairs. All items were discussed in advanced, and then repaired if we opted to do so. There was also a reasonable expectation that we could do the urgent items first and schedule the rest another time.
