This place used to be better in terms of service but seems like they are now under new management. They greeted us right away when we came in but didn't feel very welcoming (cold reception and no smile at all). There were 5 of us and they sat one of us at the end of the table. It wouldn't be so bad except there was a large group eating at the table beside us and their stroller was partially blocking the aisle. Once we were seated, the entire aisle is now blocked and there was no way to get to the washrooms. The person at the end tried to move as closely to the table as possible and people tried to squeeze through. The stroller was folded and place out of the way. I'm not sure why they thought seating us there would be a good idea. There was another table available in the back. We didn't get menus right away, waited 5 minutes. Seemed like there were only 2 people working the floor and only one was actively taking orders. Server wrote our food order down (still not smiling) but we waited a good 25-30 mins for them to arrive. There was little to no-care taken when placing the food at our table. A side order of coleslaw was forgotten so we had to ask for it. We asked for side plates and got dinner plates instead. Seemed like the server didn't know what side plates were because they were confused when I asked if they had side plates. Didn't come back to check on us, they were very dismissive and we had to wave them down when we wanted to pay. They left the debit machine at our table, we paid and they didn't come back for a few minutes. The server came back asking if we paid. We said yes. They asked where our receipt was because they were skeptical that we didn't pay because we didn't get a receipt. We don't know why their machine didn't print a receipt. We had to show proof of purchase through another form. Luckily we used ApplePay and the app showed the transaction. If the server just stayed until the payment was made, we wouldn't feel like were being treated like criminals. They weren't even apologetic at all. The food seemed the same as before so that's a consolation. Hopefully, the new owners don't try to change the recipes or we may never come back again. The ambiance seemed a little hectic and very stressful which is understandable as there were more tables than the server(s) can handle. They tried their best to clean tables and take dishes to the kitchen but lacked in the normal customer service like checking how the patrons are doing. We've been at Dave's many times before where there was only 2 servers and the place was busier and we received better service then. A little smile can go a long way. read more

My sister and I went to this place for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. This place is small and a little rough in shape compare to other restaurant in the area. On that day, I ordered a Single Cod fish with a small bowl of New England Clam Chowder. The Cod fish was great. The meat is fresh, thinly batter and well-seasoned. As for the soup, it was one of the best Chowder that I ever tasted on BC. The soup was creamy with well portion of clam meat, potato and carrots. Sloppily run business. Does not honour stated business hours of 11am to 8pm daily. I called to order take-out. Staff member told me, "We are not taking telephone orders at this time. You have to come in." OK. I got there 20 minutes later (that's how long it takes me to drive to Steveston). I was there by 7:30. Staff member told me they are not taking anymore orders. "But you told me to come in!" He answered they had stopped taking orders after I called. After reading Nadia R's review,, I'm glad I didn't order from them. Service was excellent - friendly, accommodating and efficient. The fish and chips were very good, light, crispy batter. Good quality fish. Fries were good. Bottomless soft drinks/lemonade. The restaurant doesn't have a view or much ambiance - but the good food and friendly service more than make up for this. As a craft beer drinker - I would love to see a better selection of local craft. I mean Fuggles is nearby and an arrangement could be made with Britannia Brewing as well. Four Winds is just in Delta - plenty of local craft to choose from if the establishment is interested. They only served Granville Island draft (which is owned by a subsidiary of Molson/Coors). There are much better m, locally owned craft beer options. I can attest that a heffeweizen is a great accompaniment to fish and chips. If they had a good selection of true craft beers and some rotating taps of seasonal brews, I would go more often. Other than that .... a solid choice for fish and chips. I've had takeout here twice already this summer. Discovered this restaurant while hanging out at the wharf with a friend in June. There were so many choices in this neighborhood for fish & chips but I had a good feeling about this one. They have a take-out section on the side of the restaurant where the parking lot is. There's a counter, bench and condiments. Server was friendly and attentive. Didn't have to wait long, 15 mins. A short stroll to the wharf & back did the trick. Upon arriving home, food was still warm. I got the two piece cod with fries. Cod was nicely battered, thick crispy outside and flaky on the inside. Pieces were a good size. Fries were thick cut, a bit crispy and filling. Tartar sauce was chunky. My family and I were pleased. Hence I went back a second time this month for more. Dave's has good fried seafood fare, decent interior atmosphere and passable service, but I sure wouldn't consider it the best fish 'n chips I'd ever had, nor do I expect to have a craving to return specifically here. We came here today because my wife didn't want to sit outside in the chilly weather, and that's all Pajo's has: outside seating. She ordered a two-piece cod and chips, and a bowl of New England clam chowder, both to share with our 3yo daughter. I had a First Mates platter: basically 1 piece of fish (I chose cod), 2 shrimp, 1 oyster, 2 scallops, side coleslaw, and the rest covered in fries. The fish was between perfect and slightly dry in both our dishes, likely because of vary cooking times on the thickness of the pieces. Batter was a bit thick and greasy for my tastes, as I forgot to order "light batter" as other Yelpers have suggested. Fries were crispy and delicious, nicely/lightly salted. A few Yelpers complained about the tartar sauce not being strong enough, but I felt it was just fine. It's not extra chunky like some commercial tartar sauces, but it has good flavor all the same. The shrimp and oyster batters were crunchy and relatively thin, so Tuesday didn't detract from the natural flavors. Our daughter loved pretty much everything. And that's really saying something, because she sticks to soy-sauce-based fare 95% of the time. Our bill came to $45 including tax and tip. Pretty pricey for fish 'n chips, if you ask me! read more

We walked in as a party of 10 half an hour before closing and Renee sat us right down. Many of us got the halibut fish and chips and they were awesome. One of us got the onion rings as a side and they were light and delicious. The clam chowder was amazing with fresh ingredients. The Cole slaw as my wife said was some of the best she has ever had. We were looking for a place with parking to go out to dinner. We tried Pajo's by the water and while it had good parking, the seating is outside picnic tables and we wanted a more traditional restaurant setting. We googled nearby restaurants that had fish & chips AND poutine and found Dave's. It was a little later in the day, but parking was fairly easy on street and on sides of the restaurants. Dave's is small, but again, late in the day, there were tables available. We ordered a burger, fish & chips, and poutine, and sodas. Sodas are so expensive anywhere anymore. I think they were $3 each. The chips (French fries) were really good. They are hand cut/made there, and they were the best part of the meal. The cod fish for the fish & chips was delicious. I have tried all the fish and chips in Steveston and this is the best so far. Fries were crispy and the fish was battered into perfection.

I heard so much about this place so I decided to give it a try but I was a bit disappointed. Presentation and taste of the fish & chips were average, service was mediocre. There are so many options in Steveston such as Sockeye City or Pajo's along Steveston's Landing. You can't go wrong with anyone of them. I really don't see what's the big deal that why people must come to this restaurant. Expect to wait for a table if you don't have a reservation as there were endless of tourists and locals coming in the entire time when we were there. read more

Scratching my head at how anyone was stupid enough to have given this place more than 1 star. I came here on Canada Day with my daughter. I was told that the wait was, "not long". I waited 40 minutes while people left and greasy plates were left on the table for 20 minutes. Bus Boy\Girls were chatting and I could tell that people were waiting for their checks. I finally got a table and waited 15 more minutes. Not once was I offered a drink. I finally said, "FUCK IT". Got up and left. I've been to joints like this before. All employees are ages 16 to 20, the food here probably frozen and unauthentic. I can live with that, but the service I experienced at this particular place was just a big fat Fail. I'll just get straight to the point. I found the fries sub-standard and the batter was on the overly greasy side. Also, their tartare sauce was lacking in taste, as was the chowder. The only item that I would have found myself asking for seconds were the onion rings. That said, I've only eaten there once and had my meal as take-away. Above average fish and chips but a couple of negatives 1, bit pricey 2, serves is average at best - they do not go the extra mile to please customers. Eg, bottomless fries only if not sharing with anyone else, even if it a child. Please, Pajo's is just a couple minutes away, why sit and pay tip when you can just do take out at Pajo's, and where the fish and chips just as good if not better. Throw in an extra filet once in a while, free fries for kids, etc.. I will come back though, sometimes you just get that craving to sit down and eat fish and chips not from white spot. read more

My friend Kenneth took me here for the first time. I really enjoyed it. The fish was cooked perfectly, the portion exceeded my expectation, and the chips were fresh. I was happy that it was much better than Shady Lane around the block. The prices are quite reasonable too. I had one piece of cod with chips and clam strips. When you go down to Steveston you WANT the fish and chips to be great ... scratch that, you EXPECT the fish and chips to be GREAT. Dave's for whatever "staple" it's been as a fish and chip place is a fairly large disappointment. I've been inside to eat, and had the takeout window and the quality is the same- although the service at the takeout window is really hit and miss depending on how busy the actual resto is. The pricing is high for what you get - that is one issue that I have. The other issue is that the portion is substandard. As far as the fish goes, it's OK, and as far as the chippies go, it's good. The coleslaw is a meh, OK. The one issue that I had that isn't resto related is that when I was there eating on the outside picnic tables (me, my friend and our combined three little kiddies - who were running around the picnic tables - as we were finishing our meals) a guy who had obviously had eaten FAR TOO MANY fish and chips in his life came up to us with girlfriend in tow and told us in no uncertain terms that "I'm going to be eating here so can you make sure the kids are gone?" This place used to be great. We went here yesterday and the portions have shrunk substantially. They used to offer refills for fries but not anymore. The fish and fries were over fried, I think. As in, the fries were hard, and the fish had minimal batter. Everything was quite salty. The service is great but the quality has changed so much over the past year. We were in the mood for Fish & Chips so headed to Steveston to Pajo's on a Wed night. Made the drive down from Vancouver only to find that Pajo's was closing early...not impressed. Dave's was recommended as the #2 option for Fish & Chips in the area and as we were in Steveston, decided to try it out. Upon entering the establishment, we were advised it would be 30 minutes to get a table but that their self serve take out area around back maybe able to help. The hostess/waitress made it clear that they had nothing to do with the take out area and that they were managed separately...okay. The staff at the take out area advised it would be about 10 minutes to get our food. We ordered multiple orders of the cod & chips and also an order of onion rings...yes a very greasy meal. It took just over 25 minutes to get our order. The fish, chips & onion rings were okay (nothing special) but still prefer Pajo's over Dave's...especially with the fries. We seldom have fish & chips and nice to know there are other options in the Steveston area of Richmond but highly unlikely we will be returning to Dave's. read more

Very good British fish & chips. My family loved coming in here - we're from Seattle, love British foods, but have never been across the water - so copying the locals & eating our fish -and chips! - with forks as everyone else did was fun. We really liked the fish, it was moist & the batter crisp out the outside - this is thick batter and we like it that way - but (to put it in perspective) Dave's is not as good as some spots we visited in Victoria. (Cod $11 & halibut $13) One problem: the fried oysters ($10) were not very good - more slimy than meaty with a so-so batter. Good chowder, okay poutine, and a sloppy salmon sandwich rounded out our choices. Service was fair - it was pretty typical of what you'd expect in a place heavily populated with tourists, our waiter seemed more conscientious than the majority of staff. We'll probably keep hunting around for a solid "go to" fish place in the area. read more

I really love Fish and Chips. I grew up on it. It's probably my favorite fast food. I have had some really good and some really bad fish and chips over the years. I have to say right at the beginning, this place is never consistent in terms of frying the fish. However, I think this place is definitely overall hands down better in every respect than the nearby F&C place that is on the dock. I written above them and I think that place is hype and location. I do not recommend ordering halibut at any restaurant because most people can't tell the difference between halibut and cod. You never know if you will get the real thing. As an off and on regular of Dave's at both take out and eat in, I noticed that at times your fish will not be cooked properly, it may even too greasy or it may be undercooked. I attribute this to the high turnover of staff in the kitchen. I mean, it must be tough to keep the staff working over a sizzling deep fryer especially in the heat of the summer. In busy times like weekends, you will likely get smaller portions of fish compared to any other time. Take out can also be dicey as well. When eating in, you can always return your fish back and have them make it "properly". Once again, it really depends on who is working in the kitchen as well as your rapport with your server. What I dislike about Dave's is their prices. It is very expensive. They also changed their recipe on the coleslaw and use a different tartar sauce. I always try to visit Dave's when in Richmond, but as an alternative, you can also try Pisces Fish & Chips on Westminster Highway in the Terra Nova Mall. Dave's is dated. The food is just consistently mediocre at best. The Halibut was dry and chewy and the cod wasn't great. The batter is soft and "doughy" which we didn't like. The place worn and is in desperate need of a renovation or spash of paint. Service is ho-hum. The servers are not enthusiastic or very pleasant. Our cod fish & chips came nicely wrapped and were piping hot. The fish is lightly battered and perfectly cooked (tender and moist). Chips are ok, but nothing stellar. We witnessed some order mix-ups while we waited. The couple ahead of us didn't receive all that they ordered and the young kid behind the counter seemed flustered. I tried Dave's because I heard it was the best fish n chips in Steveston. I did the take out in the back of the restaurant. Couple of things that I did not like.....1. the menu is a small piece of paper on the counter, maybe think about a large menu board above the cash register. 2. the batter on the fish was very doughy, thin it out a little and it would be nice and crispy. 3. the fries were soggy, a couple seconds longer in the fryer would help. 4. the fried clams, rubber, tough, bland, needs more seasoning maybe try fresh clams not frozen prebreaded. Went down to Steveston for a couple hours on a nice sunny wednesday afternoon and was so hungry we didn't make it half a block, luckily there was Dave's and it was very very tasty! Wife and I shared a 2-piece cod and large chips and a 1 piece halibut and small chips, the kids each had a 1 piece cod and chips kids meal. The kids made yummy sounds the entire time and there was hardly a word spoken from them during the meal. The waiter was very attentive, kept on refilling my root beer, which was just the perfect mix too! Definitely recommend for families and others on a day in Steveston. Price range is pretty decent, $5-$6 for kids, $10 - $18 for adults. read more
