As a Kerrisdale resident, this and Ajisai are the two restaurants I find myself coming back to the most. It is currently closed (I believe due to some issues with the building?), but the food is top notch. My go to has got to be the fish and chips, which come in massive portions and are probably the best deal for fish in the city outside of Cockney King's. However, this is more of the style of fried fish that I prefer, which is beer battered. One and a half pieces of fish should generally be enough for one person. I've ordered the soups a number of times and they are excellent also, with plenty of seafood in them. I also enjoy their regular fish dishes, which are clearly fresh and picked daily, as the menu can change by day. Always cooked perfectly and in generous portions. The service is what makes me always want to return. The serving staff are great and attentive. And for those who love pairing their fish with wine, there was free corkage when I went, and I was provided with wineglasses for the bottle I bought from across the street. read more

Fish Cafe has been around for quite a while. I like that there's a healthy (well if you don't choose their deep-fried option) fish place in Kerrisdale. You order a type of fish and choose how to make them (deep-fried or grilled), choose a dipping sauce, and choose a side (I forget what options they have but I got fries). I like to get their fish grilled with their lemon garlic sauce. I tried their lemon caper sauce and it wasn't as good. Also tried their tartar sauce and apparently they make it themselves in house. Lemon garlic was still the best. They also do fish burgers and clam chowders and calamari for other options. Their calamari is not as crispy as I'd like and quite expensive for the size. Service can be slow as they usually only have 1 server and 1 cook. It's a small business so be patient. read more

Drove from downtown, only to find the place was not yet opened and it was 11:30am and Friday. A few other people also tried to enter the place only to find the doors were still locked. I did notice someone inside so I thought they were still getting the restaurant ready so I hung around for a bit. I came here with my husband last night, first time. We were walking around Kerrisdale checking out menus. We were seated immediately. The place was 1/2 full at the time. We placed our order to the waitress. We did wait over 40 mins for our food. The waitress did tell us the food was coming soon. Also the seats and tables are packed quite close together. We were at a table for 2 and the was another table to our left, 90 degree to our table. Once seated the man kept leaning back and back of his kept crossing the edge of our table. We had to move our seats to the right a bit as I was afraid his hair was going to fall into our food. Well, good thing the man was going bald Unfortunately, my cod fish grilled was looked great on one side but black burnt on the bottom side. Discovered the burnt side on first cut. They did bring me another order after we advised them of the issue. The re-order came about 8 minutes and it was grilled perfectly on both sides. And they gave with a bigger cut than the first! I ate it so fast as I so hungry only having a small breakfast that morning. I was going to give 3 stars for long wait for food and error with my fish. Unimpressed with this place. 3 orders of fish took well over an hour to be served to us, and it wasn't even the right order. You have the option of grilled or fried fish along with either rice or fries. I ordered the steelhead (grilled) fish with rice but it came with fries instead, how disappointing. When I tried to be healthier, I'm unable to. A simple order yet they got it wrong even after an hour. I didn't bother sending it back. As for the fish, I've definitely had better, and it was a bit dried. To top it all off, a visit to the washrooms may make you lose your appetite as the smell was negatively overwhelming. The positives: extensive menu (many choices and different kinds of fishes available), calamari was pretty tasty, staff quite friendly. This is a family favorite of ours for casual dining and delicious food. The fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked and the sides and sauces compliment the mains. We have never had an issue with service. They are also accommodating of our baby and stroller, which is great! It's a neighbourhood spot where everyone is welcome and treated warmly with great, authentic service. Some of our seafood favourites - grilled trout, cod fish and chips, grilled calamari, blackened salmon, as well as the fish soup, which is like nothing I've ever tasted before - a rich minestrone-type broth with large chunks of fish. The fries are unbelievable, the salads generous and delicious. A choice of sauces and all are good but we love the tartar, peri peri and lemon butter in particular. And if you have space, try a desert - yummy carrot cake! There is no bar to sit at but there's a small patio for warmer days and they offer a small but good selection of alcoholic beverages. I've only ever eaten fish and chips here because when I crave some F+C I kind of crave it hardcore and usually can't be bothered to go too far - bad combination, I suppose. I need to learn how to commit. I decided to go for one piece of fish in order to save room for some carrot cake for dessert (which was pretty decent!) Our server warned us that one piece was pretty tiny and she was right - a tiny piece of fish along with some mediocre, frozen-tasting fries isn't really worth $10 to me, unfortunately! The fish was pretty tasty and the batter was probably crisp before I doused it in vinegar... The underside was nice so I'm assuming that's how it was like before I got it all soggy, oops. The people next to us had some really nice looking grilled fish so I'll have to venture away from my beloved and see if it tastes just as nice! Might go for rice instead, too... read more

A solid place for fish and chips. It's no Go Fish, but an acceptable substitute if you don't want to wait in a long line and can get to Kerrisdale. Their halibut burger was delicious. Fries were well seasoned and crispy. The clam chowder was pretty good, but I wished it were a little richer and creamier. The grilled salmon was slightly undercooked, but that's just my preference. I used to come here with my family fairly regularly but only recently returned after a six? year hiatus (moving out of the country can do that). I fondly remembered the butter sauces and plump calamari and happily agreed to my brother's dinner suggestion. Alas, although the interior is the same as my memory, the experience did not match. The restaurant was clearly understaffed, with a few empty tables still holding memoirs of their previous inhabitants. It took about ten minutes for a table to get cleared for us to sit, and about another 20 minutes before we were offered anything to drink. We were waiting on one person in the party who was running pretty late but it would have been nice to sip/munch while we were waiting. When the food arrived (1 hr into our visit...I know this because I had to feed the meter before the food arrived), the portion sizes were the same as I remember.... except the lemon butter! It was about half the size it used to be. And the calamari, once plump and juicy, now a little frizzled and chewy. I think it will be a long time before I come back...at almost $20 a person it didn't seem like good value for the food and experience that we had. The server was very nice throughout, but it was obvious that she was overloaded and same with the kitchen (again just one person cooking all the food). read more

Perfectly crispy calamari but this is definitely NOT a healthy meal option. Super heavy but the lemon butter sauce is worth it! Between two of us we shared a large order of the calamari and a large order of the Caesar Salad. Good portion sizes and enough for us. It's a small restaurant but doesn't seem to get super busy. Only problem is the owner is not a nice person at all. He is incredibly rude to loyal customers who support him and his staff. For the main dish you can pick a fish (grilled, deep fried or blackened) with a side of rice or fries and a sauce to choose (Lemon Butter, Garlic Butter, Peri Peri, Tartar) I am a sucker for the Halibut and rice with Garlic Butter, but hate the price! $20.00 + is a bit high for a piece of fish and rice. As I was picking up an order to go I did see a salad come out with the added shrimp, it looked amazing so did the Calamari! They will be my next to try. Horribly overpriced and the food quality is lacking. The ling cod burger? (half sandwich) tasted just ok, but for 13.95, way too small for the price. It was the 1/2 house salad (8.99) that really caused the poor review. It should have been called the wilted lettuce and frozen corn salad without flavor. I'll never return. What a great place. If you are into small, friendly restaurants that serve fresh, clean flavored fish, this is the place. A neighborhood place with a friendly chef/owner. Blackboard menu offers about a dozen of the day's selections. We had clam chowder, grilled halibut and grilled trout. All were superb and very reasonably priced. The sandwich board outside said newly renovated, but I think they forgot to do anything about the exhaust fan in the kitchen. I had four very small scallops, bisected horizontally, on two little skewers for $18.95, with salad, instead of rice or fries and was charged an additional $3.75. Mask warning! The food was fabulous but I can only give a one star review because of the waitress' mask situation. She only wears it over mouth so her nose was exposed and then later on, she stopped wearing the mask. She never put it back on even when she was collecting the dishes and asked how we liked the food right in our faces. I know I should have spoken up but I was very uncomfortable as no one else said anything. So as I was enjoying the tender, moist fish, I was feeling very unsafe. We've been back several times since Marcus returned to Kerrisdale. The food (when he cooks) is consistently good. The service is (still) a bit erratic. On the one occasion when Marcus wasn't cooking (I suppose he's entitled to one day a week off! ) the food was acceptable but clearly not Marcus' level. This little restaurant is easy to miss but if you know it's there it's a gem. If you like fish and chips, they make the perfect fish and chips. I had the halibut with chips. Perfect. Nicely breaded fish and deep fried. The Greek salad that comes with the meal is top drawer. Service is fast, seating is quick and everything is wonderful. I love fish and chips and this place is #1. I have always believed that the cooking of fish is necessarily a brief and frenzied affair, else wise a complete disaster. I have eaten here at least 6 times and feel that these folks 'get it'. They understand what so many other places do not - the simple task of delivering a piping hot, pan fry to your table. The salad's are so-so, a bit soggy and over -dressed.
