I took an out of town visitor here on the weekend. Dave's was packed! With Pajo's being closed for the season I guess all the fish and chip lovers come to Dave's now. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table, but the staff were buzzing around the joint and got as seated as quickly as possible. As for the food, I actually enjoyed my piece of Halibut and was impressed with the size. A one-piece with chips is definitely enough food for me. The fish wasn't overly greasy, like Pajo's, which was a bonus. I upgraded my fries to poutine, but this turned out to be a mistake. The poutine sucked, and the fries weren't very good, even though the menu says they chip up the potatoes fresh every day. Bleh. I'd be down with ordering the fish again, just not the poutine, and maybe skip the fries. The slaw was A-OK. So, with good fish, bad fries/poutine, and good service, Dave's ends up with an A-OK from me. read more

Wow - first to review! This is a Steveston staple along with Pajo's. I do have loyalty to Dave's, probably because it's the one that was originally recommended to me when my hubby and I moved out to Vancouver. We continue to come here and take friends/family for fish and chips when they're visiting. It's almost always busy, but they have a take-out window if you want to skip the resto. IMHO, always get the light batter (not regular - it's WAY too thick otherwise) and you're good to go. I always get either the cod or the halibut and I generally get a nice light crisp batter with moist fish in the centre. Fries are okay, but not fabulous. Onion rings are tasty. They have the cute newspaper wrap if you have leftovers or are doing the take-out. Marked down a star because I don't like the fries here and service is inconsistent to slow. It's a Steveston staple and much better than the places along with water where all the tourists go. read more

It's been a few years, so our memory was fuzzy. We came back for F&C, but this time... it wasn't as good as we'd remembered. I had the mixed platter, and sadly, everything was dry. The seafood was overcooked and the crumb batter was bland. We also had some Cod at the table that was equally overcooked and dry. Chips were bland. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very nice meal at all. Service was fine. We were greeted at the door and seated quite promptly. It was actually quite busy. We noticed that there were only two servers for the entire restaurant, so we had to be patient. Did the quality at Dave's take a slide in the wrong direction over the last few years? I'm looking forward to see improvements. read more

When I first went out to Steveston, I had no idea it would be so popular! However much less due to it's rustic charm as an old fishing community than to the presence of pinup boy Zak Effron, the place was full of people, and Dave's was no exception. Asking locals where to eat and drink always resulted in Dave's, so we went to the restaurant hoping to get a seat and some good seafood. The place was packed so we looked at the menu, and seeing the huge assortment of seafood was asked about take out and were directed to a little shack on the side of the resteraunt with picnic tables and benches. They served everything to us wrapped in greasy newspaper that we took out to the very spacious docks, away from the Effron community. The fish and chips were sensational! Between us there was cod and halibut and kalamari and it was all fried perfectly, complimenting the potato cut fries. They supplied a generous amount of well mixed seafood dips, instead of just the usual mayo and relish excuse for tartar sauce and ketchup. I dont think I've ever tried authentic fish and chips of that quality before, and it goes great with a lager and a couple of friends. I would go back again, and not just for Zak Effron. read more

Pretty good fish n chips. Batter is light and crispy, my two pieces of salmon were filling, moist and fresh. Chips are as advertised, made fresh and still hot when it's served, and very delicious. They gave you too little tartar sauce for that much fish, cmon guys. Great tartar though. One of the waitresses looked exhausted like she hasn't been able to sleep for days. Service was on the slow side even though it wasn't very busy, lunch on a cloudy weekday. Oh and terrible coleslaw it's like they don't even try. read more

This used to be the best fish and chip shop in town but we recently ordered take out and it was not very good. Fish batter on the cod was undercooked and doughy although the fish inside was ok. For some reason the batter on the halibut order was ok. The chips were not terrible but certainly nowhere near as good as they used to be. Many small overcooked pieces more like eating potato chips. Given the price of an order of fish and chips anywhere now is closing in on $15, Dave's needs to get back to where they were a few years ago but until I hear they have done so, I won't be back. read more

I came here on a busy but beautiful Saturday morning with a few friends of mine. We gave up on finding a table because there was a line-up, so we took to the take-out side and ate at the tables beside it. The service was fine, but the attendant was very unapproachable, for lack of a better word. The fish was quite good, and they even had a gluten free option (grilled) for my friend! She couldn't have fries, but she had a salad, so all in all we left happy. Then, by the time I got to Stanley Park, I realized I forgot my camera at the table outside! It was a nice camera and I was really disappointed. I called the next morning and they asked me to describe the case. I did. They told me they had it. I showed up that afternoon and the most friendly gentleman handed it to me. I could not have been more thrilled!!! I will be back, if not solely for the food, but for the service. Very friendly service. Crispy fries, good condiments and cold beer with a frosty mug. The waitress even gave us a third piece of fish as we were splitting the fish and chips. The only complaint was thst the fish was too greasy, however the delicious New England clam chowder Was the best we tasted in our "chowder tour of Seattle/Vancouver", so we gave a star back. read more

Came here on a rainy Friday to look for fish and chips. We usually go to Pajos, but in the winter we go here. Prices are reasonable, we ordered cod and chips. Both were fresh and what we expected. Dave's is a classic. For locals you know to order take away and eat down at the docks so I can't speak for the at restaurant experience but the fish and chips are great. You have to pay extra for tartar sauce but it is worth it. Came in on a weekend mid-afternoon. We were fortunate to be seated at a window table almost immediately, but the place was packed and very loud. Ordered a one-piece cod with a poutine, as I estimated this would be just enough for my appetite that day. My plate arrived with two EXTRA small pieces of cod - because apparently cod sometimes falls apart in the fryer and extra pieces are also dropped in case this happens. The windfall was nice but I wound up overeating as battered fish is not good reheated and I preferred not to throw it out. In the end i ate something like 2.5 pieces of fish and barely any of the enormous poutine. I found the gravy on it unpalatably salty. The fish was also rather greasy that time. I'm usually enthusiastic about deep fried items but this was one of the rare times I found it necessary to blot some oil away on a napkin. My partner had a chicken burger. The chicken patty was clearly the frozen sort, and also quite small. Odd that the oyster burger is priced the same; if the quality is also comparable does that mean you only get like one oyster..? The resulting bill was rather high; the poutine add-on I believe was $7, making my fish plate something like $14.50. My partner's chicken burger was $14. That may not seem like much to some, but it was a lot more than what we would've wanted to spend on that quality of food, and considering that 90% of our portions were just a pile of chips left largely untouched it was completely disappointing. A more reasonable amount to eat might've been to just have one of the dishes with chips and to share. Not the first time I've been to Daves, but possibly will be the last. Maybe this place has always been a tourist trap and the novelty has worn off on me, but I honestly see any point in ever returning. read more

The first time I visited Dave's, I loved the tender, flakey sea food. So I convinced my sweetheart to go there for Xmas eve dinner (we were free that night and celebrated together). We both called ahead *THREE* separate times just to make sure they'd be open on that night. We were told they'd be open til 6 pm. We live more than 1 hour away. We made the trip only to be told, at 4 pm, that they were closed. Apparently, as all the staff we had spoken to over the phone had failed to mention, it was just their take out window that stayed open til 6 pm. Not only were we turned away, but the staff all looked at us with sour expressions as though we had personally offended them for showing up past their secret closing hours. While the food is good, this experience was so so disappointing that I doubt I'll ever want to go back there again. read more

I made an order for 2 soups and the cashier told me that it would be a 5 minute wait since the soup just needs to be scooped. I understand that it is a dinner rush and it could be longer than 5 minutes, but I saw them serve 4 large orders for people who ordered after me. Some of those orders contained the same soup that I ordered! The person who was bringing out the food acknowledged me at first by asking what my order number was, but after serving the orders after me, she didn't think to check in again, even when she clearly saw me standing there. After waiting 30 minutes for soup, I finally went back in and asked them to check on the order. Their response was oh ok I'll go get it. When we were finally handed the soup, there was no apology at all and no explanation for why we waited so much longer than anyone else. Do not come to this restaurant. They abuse the fact that they have a high rating and use that as reason to treat their customers poorly. read more

After a tour of the Cannery, it seemed logical to have fish and chip! Staff recommended a few locations and we settled on Dave's. Smaller place but super friendly staff that accommodated our large group of 10 (mostly kids) quite easily. Ordered a few of the single cod w/chips, fish burger, clam chowder, calamari and platters. Fish burger was an actual piece of battered cod stuffed between a bun. We were expecting a preformed round patty and this was a nice surprise The platter consisted of fried oysters, 2 huge breaded shrimp and a single piece of cod with fries and coleslaw. Cod was nice and flaky, batter was light and not to heavy or greasy. The platter was a good size and left me feeling just right. Clam chowder and calamari were good, but nothing outstanding to write home about. Fries were quite good though and even though I'm not typically a fry guy, I did eat a lot of them. They weren't of course real cut skin on potato's and not some prepackaged stuff. For a coastal town I had high expectations, but the food was on par with casual fish/chip restaurants in Calgary (like the Joeys seafood chain) read more

This place is tasty beyond control. This was probably one of the my favourite fish/chips place in the world. We went after going to Vancouver Whale Watch (another A+ experience), and got to Dave's Fish/Chips only by chance. We were hungry, but not famished, but the Salmon battered fish was so fresh, and the interior was so creamy and not-at-all dry, made the entire experience well worth the discovery. Living in Richmond, especially the Steveston area, you can't turn your back without hearing about "Dave's Fish and chips" My Mother being one crazy fan of this place. There's even a picture of the cast of "Star Gate Atlantis" when they were here to visit. So then I thought to myself "self? i think its time to try some dead fish" ;) I ordered the 2 piece Halibut and chips which came with some pretty tasty slaw i might add. The fish itself was ok. nice and crispy, the batter however, was lacking flavor and the oil tasted like it needed to be changed big time! oh man! not a good start to my meal!.. There's nothing really much else to say in this review... its FIsh and Chips, how can you mess that up? nothing fancy or glamorous, so im not gonna knock it.. Been getting my fish and chips in Richmond for over 20 years. Dave's used to be a favourite but sadly the last 3 times I've gone this summer it's been a disappointment. I've been doing the takeout and sitting outside on the picnic benches. The picnic benches are never cleaned and really dirty, lots of seagull droppings. The portions are getting smaller and the fish is really overcooked, all you taste is batter and oil. Come on Dave, you've been here in Steveston all these years, I'd hate to see you shut down like this. read more

We took my visitors for lunch at Dave's Fish and Chips over the weekend.The fries were soggy and the coleslaw had a medicine-like taste it seems pre-package and not made fresh in-house. The dining experience was such a disappointment. Besides that the group who came after us was served ahead of us. I noticed a couple of instances where there were water drips on my food. I didn't make much of it until I actually saw a drip coming from above and so when I looked up I saw that it was dripping from the A/C vent on the ceiling over where I was sitting. I immediately notified the manager. The manager's response was "thank you for notifying us... thanks for letting us know" that's it and walked away. She never even expressed any concerns about the water that got on the food I was eating. Didn't even offer anything to make things right. I was a bit taken aback and when I expressed my disappointment her argument was that we just closed the bill and so she couldn't do anything about it anymore. I asked for the owner's contact information. I even asked for the owner's email address and was told that they are not a big company and so they don't have an email address. Which I thought was another ridiculous response. When I went back to the table I told my family about what had happened. My husband thought it was ridiculous as the manager could still reverse the charge and make some adjustments if she really wanted to make things right. I went back to talk to the manager and you can tell she got frustrated and was a bit annoyed. She asked me for the receipt and reversed the charge and credited me for my meal. It's just disappointing, it felt that I almost had to haggle for it before she would do something about it. This is not the way to run a business especially in an area such as Steveston Village where you are mostly catering to visitors/tourists. It's just that the manner that it was initially handled was very poor and was lacking high standards in customer service. I suggest that whenever you have a bad experience especially in a restaurant make sure you speak up - you pay hard earned money for good food and expect great dining experience otherwise there are other places you can choose to bring your business to. read more

I've been going to Dave's Fish and Chips since I was a kid, and I've almost always had a great experience. I think the portions are generous, the chips are delicious, and the atmosphere is always pleasant. There was a brief period where I think consistency was an issue, but after going back again recently, it seems to have passed. I think there's a very diverse set of opinions on this page largely because of peoples' personal pallets. For my pallet, this is the best fish and chips in town: the batter is not too thick, the fish stays crispy, it's nicely seasoned, and it's not too oily. Some people love a thick batter and others like a chewier texture as opposed to a crispy one. Most of the complaints seem to be about the halibut being dry or flavorless, which in my opinion is nonsense. Besides, if halibut is not your cup of tea, then there are other options such as the cod, which is a less expensive, but actually more flavorful fish. I happen to think Dave's offers a quality product at a fair price, and I'm going to go back there every time I'm in Steveston. read more

This is the perfect spot for a dine-in good ol' fashioned fish and chips experience. You take a look at the fish and chips itself, and it looks exactly the way you remember it, and tastes just the way (or a little bit better than) you remember it! The portions are just the right size and the fish is definitely fresh (hey it's Steveston!). In addition to the usual fish and chips fare, they have other deep-fried battered seafood like oysters and prawns. I go the prawns usually while my partner gets the halibut. Prawns are fresh tasting with a good helping. There's also a good combo option if you there's more than a couple of you. And if you go during non-peak season (when it's cold outside), there's an All-you-can-eat deal but best to call ahead to check if and when they offer it. It does get crowded there on any given sunny weekend day but there's a take-out counter at the side with a couple outdoor picnic tables which is perfect on a sunny day! read more

Having grown up surrounded by THE best fish 'n' chip places in the UK, I've always been somewhat hesitant to order it over here but Dave's is by far the best I've found around the Lower Mainland - consistently so - AND they serve mushy peas! This authentically low-key fish 'n' chip restaurant is very reminiscent of my old life (except they sadly don't serve bread & butter so you can make a chip butty) and the fish is always battered perfectly, none of that sloppy, uber-greasy or undercooked wall of gunk that you end up leaving on the side of the plate. We always order the halibut and it tastes fresh off the boat. The one time we were clearly given cod - even though the waitress insisted otherwise - it was quite dry & chewy. They brought us replacement meals and it was definitely halibut, piping hot and delicious. Useful tips for dining at Dave's are; 1) take a sweater - for some reason it's ALWAYS a bit cold in there (although lack of heating is a very british thing too). 2) Order the mushy peas but eat them the english way; put a bit of fish and a couple of chips on your fork, then dip in or splodge the mushy peas on top. Mushy peas on their own are gross. Use them as a topping on a forkful of great fish & chips and you can't go wrong! Trust me on this. 3) Eat in the restaurant rather than take-out. We tried their takeout just once and weren't very impressed. 4) Timing is everything at Dave's - during quieter periods the chips can be disappointingly dried out or semi-cremated like they were put back in the frier to re-heat. Other than that I've only ever had super-tasty food here. I guess I'm between a 3.5 and 4 on Dave's - when it's good it's fantastic, which has mostly been my experience. Enjoy! read more

They must deep fry hundreds of pieces of halibut a day; how can they cook these until so dry they are like dust? Service terrible, food just edible (we were hungry). The FOOD (Halibut, not fried) was very good, but there was imo an unhealthy level of cooking (frying?) oil in the air. We came out with cooking oil in our clothes, sneezing, and obviously in our lungs. Isn't cooking oil a VOC? If it is, then, eating at Dave's is just not healthy, imo. They could have invested in a better fryer oil trap, like other eating places. For example, Diavolo in Yaletown has a grease trap system that cost $200K, but the air there is wonderful. Dave (if there is a Dave at Dave's) doesn't need to spend $200K because a D-I-Y system could probably be made for under $2K. Until such time that Dave fixes this, I consider Dave's a NO-GO for me, a health-minded invidual. read more
