I love David James! Everything I've ever done at this salon has been top quality. I see Jing for manicures and pedicures, Franco for haircuts and blow-outs, and Suzy for spa treatments. Jing will give you the best manicure you've ever had in your life. Once in a while if I'm with friends, I'll get a manicure elsewhere, but afterwards I always miss Jing. She really fixes the cuticles and makes your hands and feet sparkle. Franco is a magician because he makes my super curly hair stick straight. He never cuts too much off and I always feel like a movie star after I see him. Suzy does fabulous spa treatments like facials and body wraps. She is only there sometimes, so you have to make a special appointment. She also does my eyebrows from time to time. She doesn't wax, only tweezes, so it's very precise and my eyebrows look perfect afterwards. Everyone at the salon is very friendly and nice, never snotty. The lady booking for us didn't give me a seaweed wrap deal which was one of options so reluctantly I had to get a massage deal for myself too. He loved the massage that he got and mine was good too. Highly reccomend. I went in for tips but this salon does hair and facials as well. I went in to fix a mess up from the previous visit. The owner was a sweetheart. After i told her about it, she went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. I got silk wrap tips and omg, I am glad i did. The best service I've ever gotten. I forgot her name but she cleaned my cuticles like never before. She filed my nails and made sure i liked them before moving on, thats aswome in my book. She was even careful & gentle with a cut i had on my thumb. She made suggestions about my messed up damaged nails and recommended what was best for me. I wish i had taken a before picture to show you how bad my own nails were before. Make sure to tell them what your concerns are every step of the way. I don't do my nails often so when I do is to treat myself. They make sure you feel beautiful and happy with the finished result, and that adds to the experience of treating yourself. I came here through Groupon. Making an appoitment was very easy and the receptionist is very sweet and helpful. The salon is very big and has a lot of stylists. My stylist is was very young and you can tell she was a novice when it came to cutting hair. She tried her best though and it came out fairly ok. I bought a groupon for highlights with cut, conditioning and blow out. After the front desk lady redeemed my groupon did she proceed to tell me that what I will be getting is "crown highlights" which basically means that they will be doing just a few in the front. The stylist then started telling me I should pay extra and get full highlights. After I declined she said I need toner and it will be extra 30 dollars. Its interesting because all the other salons Ive been to toner is part of the package. After all I ended up paying $50 dollars on top of what I already payed for Groupon for a service that was part of that deal. So basically they dont use Groupon as a tool to get future clients but to scam people to pay more money. I will not be coming back! read more

#TEAMTARYN! Taryn is my go to girl for cut color and blow drys. She does it all and this girl never disappoints. She's an absolute doll. What I love most about her is she won't do anything to your hair unless she thinks it'll look good and won't damage it. She's so honest and doesn't try to sell you on anything which I feel like a lot of hairstylists in the past I met have done. I absolutely love her and highly recommend her for all hair needs. Also a bit of a mix up with what they charge for a kids cut, but all was resolved without a problem. Would def recommend if your kid is old enough (mine is 3) to sit through a normal cut. Since this side of Brooklyn is virtually forgotten about, I'm making it my civil duty to try the few businesses close to my side of town (Groupon or not) so that people can make the trip over worth their while and travel time. Anyhoo, I purchased a groupon for a mani/pedi. Being that this establishment is a salon and day spa, I figured what the hell, the service can't be that bad. As I walked in, I was greeted by the receptionist who told me to wait a few minutes....cool. I took a moment to look around to notice: the place was busy and that they specialize in wedding party hair and makeup. I thought to myself yet again, it can't be that bad. As I looked around the salon and in the display cases (Turnoff #1: it had already been about 5 minutes and still wasn't offered a seat), I was about ready to walk out when the manicurist was ready to see me. Without any initial consultation, she proceeded to file my nails (Turnoff #2: shouldn't the client always be asked what shape they want their nails and if they want them cut?). As I stopped her and told her what I wanted, she told me it would be difficult to do. After all of this, as she polished my nails, she noticed that the polish was old and proceeded to polish my nails anyway (Turnoff #3: Really? Any polish-nista knows this should be taken off the shelf yesterday). Pedicure was just as bad (Turnoff #4: the pedicure station was a bench with pillows and a small sink with no jets. #5: No thanks for giving loving attention to my feet, that pedicure wasn't even worth a coat of polish). I was offered no place to dry my nails but by then I was ready to blow that joint. I left with smudged nails and an appointment for a mani/pedi at home. read more

Overpriced and no customer loyalty. I got my highlights done by a beautician that wasn't my usual girl and she did a terrible job. She has been working there for years she's not new. Half my head was uneven and literally 2 inches away from the roots. Really bad for a Brooklyn salon that charges exorbitant city prices. I made an appt to get my hair fixed by my usual beautician and in addition to "fixing" my hair with way too light color I was charged full price! I had to argue about this with the owner for quite a few minutes which was very upsetting and uncomfortable. I had been going to this salon for over a year for haircuts and color. They have no loyalty to their customers, they're rude and all they care about is money. David James salon is no spa that's for sure. The beauticians chatter with their friends constantly, don't pay attention to details, check their phones and leave customers at the sink waiting longer than ive ever been left at any other salon. I had moved from Bergen Beach about 8 years ago. While I lived there, I had gone to David James a number of times for hair cuts--always great service. The day before my wedding (almost 8 years ago), I went to David James for a massage and a mani-pedi with my mom and sister--top notch service. I haven't been there in 8 years with the exception of getting gift cards and jewelry around christmas (BEAUTIFUL selection of jewelry, as well as handbags). I had gone onto Groupon one day and they were offering a deep tissue massage at David James for more than half the price. I snatched it up right away!! A day or two later they had a Groupon for a spa mani-pedi for 1/2 the price as well. I had a wonderful previous experience at David James so I was excited! I had called to make an appointment to use my Groupons and was told that for the Groupons they were only doing the services on certain days and they were booked up until the expiration day, BUT would extend the groupon for another few weeks to accomodate me....which was very nice. Which is why I gave them 3 stars instead of 2 stars. Let me explain my rating of only 3 stars: 2 stars on Yelp means: Meh---I've experienced better. 3 stars on Yelp means: A-OK. My experince at David James was "Good for the Price Paid". So A-OK for the price. If I was paying full price for the services I experienced, I would not have been too happy. Deep tissue massage: First off...this has NOTHING to do with the lovely woman who did my massage and my nails. She was very friendly and this is NOT her fault, BUT, let's be honest, David James Day Spa--She is NOT a professional masseusse!! I've had enough massages in my lifetime to know what a real professional massage feels like! She is a nail tech--a really good one--but not a masseuse. She didn't even know to put the pillow roll under my legs. I go to Mimi's Nails and Angel Gift Nails in Bay Ridge. Sometimes they offer a quick back massage for $10. It feels good, but you know it's not professional. So in conclusion, I did enjoy the massage, but would I ever go back and and pay $90? No Way. For $40--yes. I'd go to the Green Spa or Cavali Tonuzi...where they give REAL massages. Oh--and hearing a ticking timer throughout my treatment with a loud--and I mean LOUD alarm going off at the end wasn't a nice touch!! LOL Now, do I think your spa offers REAL massages? Yes, but I think you cheaped out for the Groupon customers, which is very dissapointing. If I were someone who had never been to your salon/spa....I would NOT come back again for a massage. Also, the spa is nothing special. You guys need to take a trip to some other spas to get some ideas. I was not even given a robe or slippers or offered water or anything, that was a first! "SPA" mani-pedi: Let me start off by saying that 99.9% of the time, I get my nails done in a NAIL salon where they have spa chairs with massaging backs, whirlpool foot baths ,nail dryers, and a large selection of colors. They are also 1/2 the price of what spas charge--and do an excellent job at what they do. So, although the woman who did my nails at David James did a wonderful job, I was missing those extra touches that Mimi's or Angel Gift's have. David James just had a bench you sit on, with dirty pillows (clean them or get some new ones) and you put your feet in a sink of water. The spa mani-pedi to me, was no different than a regular mani-pedi, except they put some sort of mask on your legs and some extra jelly stuff on your hands. But, I wasn't going to complain because the price was good and the woman did a good job. But seriously, someone at David James needs to visit a nail salon to see what a "SPA" pedicure is all about and raise your standards a bit. You do say you're a spa, don't you? Why would anyone pay the prices you charge when they can go to a really nice nail salon, pay a bit less and get a lot more treatment. At the nail salons I've been to, you not only get a mask on your legs, you get to PICK the scent of your mask, your feet are in a scented whirlpool foot bath, and you receive a hot stone massage and a lotion massage that lasts about 10 minutes. It also includes a parrafin wax heel treatment. Also, where are the nail dryers???? After my mani-pedi, which did come out BEAUTIFUL, the nail tech said "where do you want to sit to dry"? Um...you guys don't have dryers?? Oh no, they don't!! I sat for 15 minutes next to dirty pillows, watching tv, blowing on my nails with my breath. They were still very tacky when I left....they had a "spray"oil which didn't work. And my nails never really dried and when I woke up in the morning they had the creases from my sheets. What a waste! I now have to go to the nail place by me and get a color change. All in all, for the price, it was decent...but I will not be returning...except maybe for some jewelry... read more

I made a reflexology massage appointment for the morning of my birthday, which was a Sunday morning. I walk in and the salon was empty, little staff and no clients. A woman sitting at a manicurist's table is called to take me down. To my surprise, she wasn't just taking me down, she was doing the reflexology. A nice woman, but really?? All I got was a foot rub for the hour, with a little leg rub. No aromatherapy. She did not hit the pressure points like a good reflexologist does, probably because she's a manicurist. So disappointed. I mean, if you're short staffed on a Sunday, don't take advantage of people thinking they won't know that a non skilled and non trained person is providing a service which they have no clue about. Reflexology is not a foot rub. Guess I'll continue to travel to bay ridge or even marine park for a real and good reflexology massage. read more

I had a horrible experience with this place. I would I avoid this place at all costs. I had purchased a 60-minute swedish massage for my boyfriend on Groupon. I thought it would be a perfect gift. I set up an appointment for him at 3PM and gave my boyfriend the printed verification and everything was set. He shows up there on time to only be told that the appointment was for at 2PM. Which was absolutely a lie or a mistaken or their behalf. I set the appointment and wrote it down so I know I did not make a mistake. The man at the front desk greeted my boyfriend with an attitude and was being a total b****, excuse my language. He did not even offer him a refund or any type of reimbursement but only a nasty unnecessary attitude. That's the proper way of treating a customer, right? NOT. My boyfriend called me to tell me what happened. I felt miserable and was really upset at what happened, and could not believe the way he was treated.I called to tell them that they made the mistake and that is not the way to treat someone. Well nothing to be surprised because yet again he was rude and had a nasty attitude and refused to do anything. He just really did not give a shi*. They did not call me to verify the appointment a day before; they said they called my boyfriend but he never got a phone call, which was a lie once again. They told me to contact Groupon and have them deal with the situation. So much for customer service. I suggest anyone looking into this place, if I were you I would avoid. Stay far away! My wife went in to have her wig recolored at 11am. They told her they would call her in an hour. My wife said she would be hanging around waiting for their call (she had both kids with her). Two and a half hours later my wife reminded them that she is waiting, they said again that they will call her when it is ready and that they close at 7PM. At 6:40 she got nervous because she didn't hear from them, so she went to the store and they again said it is not ready and that they close at 8. Finally at 8:30, after waiting in the parking lot for 45 minutes with two screaming kids in the car, it was ready. The kicker? They quoted one price over the phone and jacked it up $20 and the color turned out to be way too dark. If you prefer to be treated like a human being, find another place to go. The only service I've ever had in here was the deep tissue massage. Do yourself a favor and make a Sunday appointment with NATASHA!! She is an absolute angel. She is friendly, cute, and a great masseuse. I usually go for a one hour massage when I get a gift card for my birthday or Christmas because it is a little pricey. I went to David James for a bridal appointment for my hair and makeup as well as my mother in November (Total cost $570). After hearing rave reviews for years, there was no doubt in my mind that my hair would be gorgeous... When I made the appointment they told me I would have my hair set in curls and that it would stay set for the duration of getting my makeup done. I thought this was a great idea being that i have thin hair. Instead they did my makeup first, and when I went to see Marina the hairstylist she immediately passed me along to another young girl who set my hair in very loose curls. I stayed under the dryer for no more than 10 minutes. Marina asked me why I did not make a trial appt, and I told her that on the phone I was told by a man that most people don't do a trial because they do not cut the cost for trials. I listened to what he said and did not make a trial appt. My hair fell from the curls before I even arrived at the church. I was an still am very unhappy with the money I spent there, but more importantly that I was not happy with how I looked on my wedding day. My mother's hair and my bridesmaid's hair came out better than mine! Marina definitely was not interested in making my hair look wedding day worthy, but according to her attitude regarding the trial, she made it as if it was my fault.
