I have been driving past this place for years. Today was finally the day I stopped in. Parking was easy and up close. The staff are extremely pleasant and the entire atmosphere is welcoming and fun. There cool, indoor seating as well as outdoor seating. They even have a play area for the kids. The inside decor is unique and cool to explore. Retro 1950s sort of thing. I ordered a mushroom Swiss burger made with veggie patty. My burger was, fresh and yummy. My onion rings were fantastic but I really didn't like the fries at all. Too greasy and over done. I stopped in at Davies' for breakfast today with an older couple that I know. It's a retro diner with plenty of seating and great lighting. You can easily do up to eight people. I loved the black and white photo of Audrey Hepburn as well as the Beatles in the area we sat in. I ended up getting their barbacoa breakfast tacos, eggs sunny-side up. I thoroughly enjoyed the plate; the arrangement was top notch and was very eye catching as a result. I got it with corn tortillas and the barbacoa was juicy without being overly messy which made for a pleasant eating experience. Food: my wife got a chicken fried steak I got the chuckwagon sirloin. We split each item to taste the other. The chicken fried steak is something we consistently order at diners/brunch places and this is the best of the 5 places we've been to so far. The breading was great, and I'd say they get an edge on the gravy compared to others too. "This is the first gravy of the places we've been that actually adds good flavor and isn't just there" is what my wife said. I wouldn't go that far as to say the gravy at other places adds nothing, but imo it was noticeably superior. I also got a side of the Fall menu pumpkin pancakes and it was amazing; I'll have to try their regular pancakes in the future for a fair comparison to other locations, but they were good. I suspect they were Golden pancake/waffle batter (or at least used some golden ingredients), and that's a good thing since pancakes derived from that brand are the best pancakes/waffles in my experience. The hashbrowns were the best we have had at the 5 places we've visited; whoever they had cooking today knew how to actually brown them and make them crispy. The churros were good. Not the best I've had, but they were definitely made fresh which I appreciated, so I'd give them a 4/5 on that (but everything else was honestly a 5). They were just slightly overdone in my amateur estimation. Food, visit 2: tried the lunch menu the next day because we enjoyed breakfast so much. The philly cheesesteak was solid. I lived in Philly for 3 years so I can't give it a perfect score, but I'd say it was pretty close--much closer than I'd expect a diner to get. Fries were solid. My wife got the Rueben. We split both sandwiches so we both got to try both. The Rueben was very good imho. We also got an Oreo shake which was better than at the other diner's we've patronized recently. Overall, the lunch visit was 5 for food, so whether lunch or brunch you'll be happy. Service: 100% 5 stars. Our server, Jeremiah, is amazing and I hope they treat him well. He was super knowledgeable about the menu and helped guide us through things I'm definitely going to try in the future. He also helped us look through the lunch menu because we loved this place so much I want to try a lunch item tomorrow. He gave us good insights as well--what's made exclusively in house, what's original, what contains pre-made ingredients and is less of a specialty, etc. Loved that. He guided us well, and I hope he stays so he can guide us in the future! I feel like this is a place where if you become a regular you'd get treated well. Service, visit 2: We had Jeremiah again and he was excellent. He brought me a pitcher of Diet Coke because of how much of that I drink. 5/5. Absolutely legend. Atmosphere: it's a 1957 diner on the register of historic places, even if you had a bad experience otherwise, atmosphere is gonna be a 5/5. Sure, it's old. Rickety. It looks well worn. But that's the charm. Competing diners try to imitate the 50s aesthetic, but this *is* the 50s aesthetic. It's actually from that time. And that's why you want to come here: you drive by and see this grimy, classic nostalgic 1950s diner, and it's exactly that. So I'd give this a 5/5 atmosphere. After 8 years of coming here the chef now owns the business and treats his customers like dog poop. He completely overcooked my food to the point the customers next to me told me to bring it back. The pancakes were not fully cooked, and the fiesta skillet was just not good. Bacon looked great but was pepper not regular and not what we expected nor wanted. To top it off, she asked if I wanted hot sauce. Of course I do, asked for cholula, but when I poured some out it was immediately clear that they poured water and Tabasco into the bottle. One of my wife's and my early dates was when we went out to what was then a backwoods area--free from the city lights of Denver near Chief Hosa. We laid out a blanket and watched the Perseid meteor shower. So breathtakingly beautiful. Had the Chuck Wagon Breakfast of steak, eggs, hash browns and toast, that's still on the menu these 20 years later. Cost I think around $4.95 or so back then. Today the price has risen to $9.95, but it's still a great deal. And what's the best thing about that 46 ton railroad car diner that was shipped out to Denver I think back in the 50s or early 60s and is now on the National Historic Registry? Well they're still serving the same Chuck Wagon Breakfast. We were driving up to the mountains yesterday and happened to be going by the diner when we both looked over at each other and without saying a word reached out squeezing each other's hands and smiled. I am tired of being a defensive consumer when venturing into a restaurant these days. We have become more and more leery of eating at restaurants in general. It has ever increasingly becoming a swindling industry which is sad. It seems to be especially bad in the Denver metro area given the sky rocketing cost of living just from a decade ago or so. ***Be aware that even if you pay in cash here, the servers do not automatically remove the 4% convenience fee automatically charged for paying with a credit card. This is what the default posture of stealing money looks like, intentional or not.*** We hadn't planned to eat here, or even eat out. We were out so early that many people weren't up and out yet so we decided to stop in and grab a bite on a weekend morning as this place has been around for a long time and we'd never been here. The food was mostly below average. Neither the eggs or the hash browns were seasoned with salt & pepper. This was easy enough to remedy though. I asked for over easy and my eggs were over medium. It wasn't a big deal to me since I love them just about any way except over hard. The hash browns were well crisped but had no potato flavor. They were clearly dehydrated potatoes. The pancakes were cooked well. The chicken fried steak seemed to be cooked to order. It was oddly seasoned and tasted like nothing and the gravy was a gloopy mess of no flavor. This is why we don't eat breakfast out much. It is so easy to make these items at home effortlessly delicious. And for a lot less money. This place is memorable due to the signage and the building itself which was shipped out from New Jersey. If the owner or a manager is reading this, I implore you to train your employees to remove the illegal 4% convenience fee for using a credit card if a patron pays in cash (the max charge allowed by Colorado state law is 2% for a credit card, this doesn't apply to debit cards). We appreciated that it was listed on each page of the menu at the bottom so we knew to pay in cash. We paid in cash. Despite this, the change we received didn't take into account that we paid in cash so we had to ask for the money back for that fee and your staff seemed to not know who to consult. It was awkward. And I was looked at by your staff and judged because of it. I could have easily just deducted the fee from the tip but that wouldn't be right so I asked for my money back on that after paying in cash. Your staff should know better. What a bizarre culture here. This whole fee nonsense created an unnecessary reckoning given how thoughtlessly it was considered. And the owner bought this place for over $1 million dollars. Consider that. The building itself is beyond rundown. The cost must be for the land, there is a large parking lot, and the historic signage. There is no reason to return other than eating below average food and paying fees for a credit card that isn't used. What is the new word for this industry as this certainly is not hospitality? read more

Grew up close to this place in the 70s but never went. My father used to come here for coffee. Been in business for 57 years. Unexpectedly finally went today and it was great! Can finally take this iconic Colorado diner off my foodie bucket list. Per server Dee was so friendly and just the right amount of attentiveness. Food was everything you want an old timey greasy spoon diner to be. Steak and eggs was tasty and a very large portion. Coffee was good, strong and hot. I really enjoyed visiting this Denver diner that's been around since the 1950s. I'd guess quite a bit of the interior is original, so 70 years old. I sat at the counter and the design has worn off where plates have been placed over the decades. But it's fun to visit and the food is good. I had steak and eggs with hash browns and pancakes, and a cinnamon roll. Pancakes were fluffy and light. Hash browns were perfectly cooked and crispy on top. The cinnamon roll was amazing: buttery and sweet. My only issue was the steak. I ordered medium rare and it was more on the medium side. And it was kind of salty. But it was decent. I ate all of it. The highlight, though, was the service. Super friendly and everyone seems to enjoy working there. My server was very attentive. She topped my coffee off numerous times and was very nice. I asked to have my cinnamon roll after I was done with my steak and eggs, and she timed it perfectly so that she gave me my roll hot and fresh just as I was taking my last bite of steak and eggs. I really want to like this place more than I do. I have friends who come frequently, and they always seem quite happy with their food and service. I've been here a few times now, and my experiences have ranged from just okay to not good. On my most recent visit, I think the biggest problem was that the bleach-based cleaner that they had used was so overpowering that you could smell it throughout the entire diner. The cleaning station is kind of centrally located in this relatively small space, so it's rather hard to avoid. This definitely did not enhance the flavor of my food. I ordered a Denver omelette with Toast and hash browns. And nothing seemed quite right. The eggs were definitely overcooked. The toast was dry. And the hash browns tasted a bit off. This was probably the worst meal I have had here. They were only moderately busy that day, and the service was decent. On other visits, I have had better food and friendlier service. So I'm willing to give them three stars overall, but my last experience was not something that would make me want to come back. read more

Stopped in for a quick breakfast during our trip from Denver to Alma. Opted to get a cinnamon roll rather than a pancake or waffle as my "breakfast sweet". This is the absolute best cinnamon roll I have ever had. God took extra time when blessing the mind of the person who came up with this recipe, and the hands of the one who made this specific roll. The pastry has the perfect fluffy top that is complimented by the moist, flavorful spice blend in the core. You can find a healthy serving of butter & frosting on the side of the cinnamon roll that enhances the roll beyond imagination. Not sure what you're doing if you come to Denver and don't grab one of these life changing cinnamon rolls. I have been going to Davie's for decades. I remember going here when my son was just a toddler. I have taken family and friends here, even going by myself recently. My favorite here is the chuckwagon breakfast with a side of biscuits. Parking is plentiful behind the building. They have both steps and a ramp for ADA compliance. There is seating both indoor and outdoor (on nice days). It is easily found off West Colfax between Garrison and Kipling on the north side of the street. They close by 3pm every day. I know they open early but not sure what time. I am not a morning person or at least I likely will not be visiting here early in the morning. I have a quark about eating breakfast for lunch (brunch). Davie's also offers a locals discount when you get 'x' amount of visits or purchases, then you get a certain amount off. I forgot the amount. I believe it is either 10 or 12 visits. They offer both breakfast and lunch items. For lunch, I have enjoyed their Mushroom & Swiss burger and their Hawaiian burger is pretty good too. Tip: make sure what you want is in the to-go bag before leaving. I have asked for certain things or requested things NOT be included and they have either given me what I didn't want, or left out what I wanted. Yes, I am a thorough and selective person. Service was great and they were super accommodating of our young kids (high chairs, kids' menus/portions, bringing their items out first, etc). My breakfast burrito was gigantic and also amazing - highly recommend filling it with their chorizo which is made in house. Pancakes were also delicious. Coffee could have been stronger but was adequate. Bathrooms were tiny but fit the vibe. Disappointed the jukebox wasn't working (my kids had never seen one and wanted to play a song but we couldn't). Not feeling the love. I've had better and more edible biscuits from a cap. Staff has no knowledge of the menu. When queried if the refried beans had lard she disappeared for 10 minutes and eventually a manager type surfaced to say they usually don't but today they did??? If someone has an allergy and didn't know it was thrown in today could have been tragic. I inquired about the gravy if it had meat and was told no only to have server come back to say yes it did. I moved back to Lakewood a few months ago and one of the first places I ate at was Davies' chuck Wagon Diner because it reminded me of the only place I ever ate out at as a child. My first visit was in August 2023 and was a great reminder of old fashioned diners. The service was good as was the food and I brought a friend for lunch the following month. When my brother invited me to breakfast last week, I picked this place. Sadly, the food quality has deteriorated significantly. I ordered french toast which was dry and not freshly made. My brother ordered huevos rancheros which was tasteless and poorly made. I will not return or recommend this place again. I think this is the end of what what was once a good place to eat. read more
